Spotlight on Avacar Bluestar, an Active Leader in the Gay Community. Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Avacar Bluestar and Lanai Jarrico

It’s not too often I get to sit down with another Media CEO and share stories about what brought us to Second Life, let alone simultaneously conducting an interview with one another. Talk about an awkward first meeting set up by a friend...

We were both interested in interviewing the other but unsure who was doing the asking at the time. After breaking the awkward silence, we shared a mutual introduction. Avacar initiated the beginning of an interesting conversation by asking me questions about my history here in the virtual world. It turns out, his virtual world experience started much like my own. I quickly learned that we both have one starting point in common; The Sims Online. Avacar and I joked about making pizza as we sat in my office sharing our stories. He told me how he took over GWN operations when the founder suddenly passed away. At the time, Avacar was a leading writer that wanted to continue his friend’s vision. He shared his dedication and sacrifices and how some of it even created turmoil in his real life. Looking back I’m sure it was worth the effort, but it is now time for him to move forward to another media project. *gasps* Opps! Did I just let the cat out of the bag?

Meet The Flying Tigers! Lukes Lionheart Reporting...

The Tiger in Flight

Just when you think nothing on sl can surprise you anymore, you find yourself in the middle of a WWII aviation reenactment as a side gunner on a Japanese bomber with a white wolf wearing angle wings as your pilot. No kidding, but I digress. What started out four years ago as a small group of nomadic aviator friends flying around the grid for fun has evolved into a multi sim operation, the largest aviation group in sl with over 2400 members and a bunch of downright fun folks to hang out with.   Meet “The Flying Tigers”.

On the hunt ....

As most of us know there are a number of discount groups in and around Second Life, where we can buy a variety of things and depending on the group the discounted price is anything from L50 to as low as L25 for items bought on a certain day. I understand from vendors I have spoken to that these discount days are extremely lucrative.

Another SL phenomenon is ‘the hunt’.  The gifts made available on hunts vary in quality depending on who is organising them, so along came Titania Halasy and her 30L Hunt group.   This group morphs the discount phenomenon with the hunt phenomenon.

Titania explains “It’s a new concept: a hunt, traditional in its form, with hints and hidden items, where the focus is on quality rather than quantity.”

To all intents and purposes the hunt prizes will be of a quality level normally associated with full-price store items but sold at 30L each, when found. In all participating stores, Hunters will get a hint, with the hunt prize picture for that store and the landmark to the next store.

Hunters will need to visit each store at least once, as in a traditional hunt, to get the next landmark, but will have control on what prizes they prefer to hunt for.

Titania says “It's a great chance for fun and for Creators to promote items that will, after the hunt, be sold normally at full price in their stores.”

The 30L Hunt group is calling this hunt ‘The BLACK EGG Hunt’ and it is scheduled to run from 01 April to 08 April.   It is a circular hunt which means you can start it from any store.  The official starting point though is to be at TRIDENT (Houses, Furniture, Ships, Landscaping) which can be found @

Better Beauty in Opium Evolution™, The Story of Ramsa Luv and Veracity Afterthought, Amanda432 Cheviot Reporting...

John Keats once wrote “Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty, that is all ye know on

earth and all ye need to know.” Beauty is not how you look on the outside or not

how you look on the inside. It’s a combination of both inside and outside. Of course

there is that saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder and sometimes when you get

up in the morning, you may look in the mirror and say “I look pretty good to be a

model.” You have the shape, the skin and the hair, what more does one need? Then

you meet two people like Ramsa Luv and Veracity Afterthought and realize

there is more to modeling than you may have imagined. That is the feeling I got when I met

these two individuals. One look at them made me think you’re seeing two people on

a European runway.

Why noBrix City Soars Among Merchant Districts -Troy Aristocarnas Reporting...

noBrix City

Like the impressive lady archer statue that meets a teleport to noBrix City , this new in-world commercial center appears right on target on establishing a firm presence in SL’s metaverse.

In just a few months since its establishment late last year, this district ranked as the eleventh most visited sim in December 2011. Why such a lofty ranking in so short a time can readily understood. For one, the dreaded, soup-like lag of similar SL complexes is largely unfelt as one navigates through its quadrants of trendy fashion shops, modeling agency, club and setups for casual games.

As important, too, a significant number of the top SL brands have set up shop in noBrix, egged on no doubt by this establishment’s friendly and decisive management available for consultation 24/7 globally to serve their needs. Such professionalism is evident in the following cordial exchange of this deadline-beater with noBrix Wyx, the brains behind SL’s fast-rising merchants’ district.

BDSM In Second Life - Pandora Drezelan Reporting...

"Dominance and submission" (also known as D&s, Ds or D/s) is a set of behaviors, customs and rituals relating to the giving and accepting of control of one individual over another in an erotic or lifestyle context.
Compensating elements of the total dominance and submission are care and devotion complementing one another, therefore facilitating stable relationships. The consensual submission of the sub is sometimes demonstrated to others by symbols indicating his/her belonging to the Dom, such as wearing a collar and in some cases tattoos and/or piercings.
In general as compared to conventional relationships, BDSM participants go to great lengths to negotiate the important aspects of their relationships in advance, and to take great care in learning about and following safe practices.

Homeless In Second Life - Pandora Drezelan Reporting...

When I first came to Second Life, finding a virtual home was the last thing on my mind, however after a few nights of logging in and out of parks, info hubs and shelters I decided it was time to find my own place in Second Life.
After spending some time speaking to other people in Second Life and visiting them, I was amazed by their places and just how much effort went into setting up and decorating the ideal virtual home. I couldn’t wait to find a place I could call my own.

Spotlight Feature: Explore and Discover, Endeavour Cove - Lukes Lionheart Reporting...

Endeavour Cove

America has a space shuttle named “ Endeavour”. That name comes from good lineage. History buffs might remember something about Captain Cook and his famous sailing ship “The Endeavour”. For those who might not, here is a brief run down. Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer and Captain of the famous exploration ship “HM Bark Endeavor”. He was the first European to make contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. In short, he was a famous explorer who made many remarkable discoveries. This is where Endeavor Cove derives their name. They, and I, would like to invite you to come “Explore and Discover Endeavor Cove”

Dream Seeker Estates going the extra mile

Second Life -21 March 2012:  As Fashion For Life, the multi-day opening event for Second Life’s Relay For Life season draws to a close, the Dream Seeker Estates Corporation announces various new programs to further its charitable engagement in Second Life.

Dream Seeker Estates Corporation today announced the establishment of the Philanthropic Society of Dream Seekers.  Membership to this society is open to residents and friends of any of the corporation’s estates including Dream Seeker Estates, Costa Rica Sims and Rockhopper Estates, and is to be coordinated by Harper Beresford.  It is the intention of the corporation to register the Society as a Relay For Life team and to engage its various communities through fundraising activities in support of medical research and natural disaster response.

Dream Seeker Productions, which under the leadership of Roe Woodford is responsible for the production of fashion shows, will work closely with the Philanthropic Society of Dream Seekers and will leverage the exposure that the fashion shows produce and the generosity of the fashion community to generate charitable donations in support of the current fundraising activities of the Society.

What’s more, following their well-received sponsorship of Fashion For Life with the underwriting of all 10 sims used for the event, Dream Seeker Estates Corporation announced today that it has reached an agreement with the American Cancer Society to become an official corporate sponsor of Relay For Life in Second Life.  Effective immediately, the corporation’s long running referral commission program is to be expanded to directly benefit Relay For Life.

For every new rental where the resident mentions they heard about the estate through a Relay For Life team or event organized by a specific team, the corporation will donate the standard referral commission to that team.

Keep your eye open for announcements of events to be organized under the auspices of the Philanthropic Society of Dream Seekers.

Fight Against Cancer : Inside Story Of Fashion For Life 2012, Luc Fray Reporting......

A lot of people had heard of Cancer, but what really is Cancer?

Cancer is a traitorous phenomenon in which your own body betrays and attacks you. It is derived from the latin word meaning, "crab" or "crab-like," which refers to the crab-like growth invasion of malignant cells to nearby tissues.

DSE CEO Zeebster Colasanti Setting the record straight

Second Life -18 March 2012:  Over the past two months there has been growing speculation in the media and on the SL rumor mill as to the situation developing on the Costa Rica Sims.  Since many of these rumors are based on false information, Zeebster Colasanti, CEO of Dream Seeker Estates Corporation and the new owner of Costa Rica Sims, now sets the record straight.

Spotlight On Pooky Amsterdam, CEO of PookyMedia, Machinima Production Allen Eppenberger Reporting…

Pooky Amsterdam is amongst a handful of people in Second Life that have instant name recognition. She's prominently known for her Machinima productions and her production company, PookyMedia. She's produced clips for a variety of clients, including Linden Lab itself. If you do a search for television shows with her name, you get numerous returns. Her YouTube channel has received over 1.2 million views. One of her early experiences with VR has been Habbo Hotel, where she was producing videos as well.

I had the tremendous good fortune to be able to sit down with Pooky on a Thursday evening for a chat about herself and her values in both her company and in Second Life. While my interviews are usually short and pointed, I discovered an hour had passed by the time we were wrapping up! She's a very open and easy personality to get to know, and I'm glad to count her as one of my friends in SL.

Mermaids In Second Life -- Pandora Drezelan Reporting

One of the beauties of Second Life is that you can be whoever or whatever you choose to be, the styles of avatars are almost unimaginable and the list is endless from human, vampire, demon, etc.--the choice is yours.

And then there are mermaids, an amazing aquatic and mythological species with a human form and the tail of a fish, truly graceful and amazing. "Mermaid" is a mixture of two words, mer the French word for "sea", and maid, being a young woman.

Dreams, More Than Just a Place to Build -- Lukes Lionheart Reporting

The Sojourner Memorial

What started as a story about a building contest turned into the story of "The Sojourner" and the Love of a Mouse.

I'm a builder here on SL and a couple of weeks back, I went to one of my haunts to watch a “Speed Building” contest. While there, I saw the notice for the monthly building contests. The theme for the month of March was “Green”. I thought, Wonderful! What a great theme, green, as in the environment. That would probably make a great story. So I sent an IM the owner of the “Dream Builders” group, a person by the name of “The Sojourner”, to ask for an interview. A little while later, I received an IM from Golda Stine, who said she was the sim caretaker. This struck me as a bit odd, but we set up a time to get together later that day. It turns out Golda is a pint-sized mouse with a giant heart of gold. After some initial chit chat, I got down to business and asked questions about the history of the sim, the how and why of the group and the March build contest. This is when I realized the story was not going to be about the contest; it is the story of The Sojourner.

SL Newser Commentary: Linden Lab Is Destroying It's Newfound Trust

Longtime users of Second Life are all too familiar with the days of M Linden. Before him, Second Life was truly seen as "Your World, Your Imagination." But then, Linden Lab began making a number of questionable moves that didn't seem to make any sense, except possibly for short term profits at the expense of long term, or just made no sense at all. People began to have less and less faith in the Lab to run the virtual world in a competent manner. The doubt was to the point among some as to question any new move Linden Lab would make out of fear they'd just screw it up and end up making the Grid worse off.  Read More

TIME FOR A CURE

Time for a cure is the theme for the music festival running in conjunction with Relay for Life in Second Life.

Two Relay For Life in SL teams are hosting a music festival which runs from March 10th through to 17th March and which will consist of live performers, DJ’s, Poets as well as a Nickelback tribute band. This dual team event has the two teams collaborating for this worthy cause.

Still Braveheart, who has put in a great deal of the legwork in organising the festival explains how the team she represents is made up “The team, ‘SL Music Races for a Cure’, is made up of all the different avenues of the music community; performers, managers, venue owners, fans, music group owners. This is a wonderful way for the entire music community to achieve a few things--camaraderie, exposure to the music community, and most importantly, the ability to make a difference in the battle against cancer, a devastating disease that has affected everyone in some way shape or form. It is a team made up of 120 members from all walks of the live music community”. The SL Music Races for a Cure team have already accumulated over US$800 for this Relay for Life season.

The other team participating in the music festival is ‘Hero’s For Life’. NightWalker Galaxy representing ‘The Hero’s For Life’ says of his team’ “this team was formed by 4 People who wanted to help in the fight against cancer...We have based our theme after the marvel comic book heroes who are there for anyone that is in need of them...The motto of the Hero’s is ‘Stand Strong against cancer’.... Each member of the team has their own ability and brings their own helping hand and together there isn’t anything we will not do or put together to help in this fight.” Hero’s is a much smaller team but has a big heart and heart and compassion can't be measured in numbers.....

The venue itself is located at the corner of Relay Boulevard and Cure Avenue. There will be vendors available which will house only Relay sale items, along with the regular shops along the street. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/the%20breakers/32/152/22

Still Braveheart concludes by saying “We are looking forward to the best Relay For Life Season ever....having fun and making a difference in the battle against cancer.”

$200K USD in Bitcoins Stolen -- Allen Eppenberger Reporting

I learned last evening from Technovelgy.com that an amount totaling BTC 46,000 in the digital currency called “Bitcoin” was siphoned away from a cloud service called Linode.com. That company issued a statement on their site, which I found on Facebook: http://status.linode.com/2012/03/manager-security-incident.html The story first broke March 1st on Bitcoinmedia.com.

VirWoX.com, a currency exchange site who trades in Linden Dollars, also does business in Bitcoins. I contacted them for a comment. Their anticipated reply was “...given that this event is completely unrelated to Second Life, (it) did not affect us”. This is fortunate, as it does speak of the incident being completely isolated. I'm sure there are many other sites that deal in Bitcoins that are unaffected as well.

What makes this story important is the fact that the default world is increasingly leaning towards virtual currencies as the global economy continues to fluctuate. The fact that we occupy Second Life means that we all deal with Linden Dollars. Many of us also will also be dealing with Facebook Credits soon. We will expect our virtual wallets to be secure. Just because our digital currency has no physical paper equivalency doesn't mean that it is any less of a medium of trade. Most of the global wealth is actually traded in ones and zeros. We use credit and debit cards. And many third world countries rely on cell phones to do their transactions. All of these mediums are heavily dependent on a secure digital system of exchange.

While Google's Eric Schmidt has stated at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, that Bitcoin is unregulated and therefore undesirable (my paraphrase), we will still be trading in Bitcoins, Linden Dollars, and other digital currencies in the foreseeable future. It will be vitally important to treat these every bit as respected as US dollars, Euros, Yen, or any of the physical currencies that are traded.

Inside the World of Relay for Life - Part Two -- Coco Lierfatte Reporting

This is a continuation of yesterday’s piece on Relay for Life. It was difficult to write about such a wonderful organization (and the wonderful people a part of RFL) in just one article. I had the pleasure to sit down and talk with a few Relay for Life veterans to learn about their joining of RFL and how the organization has impacted their lives.

In memory of Courtesan DeCuir

As the various events for The Relay for Life for 2012 get ready to kick off I would like to share this story with you.

In 2007 one Courtesan DeCuir arrived in Second Life. Courtesan DeCuir who had been a prior cancer survivor took Relay for Life very seriously. One year she did a tribute as her music Idol “Martina McBride” during Relay for Life to help those who were in need and another time we heard Courtesan speak once more through Martina McBride in the words of her release “I’m Gonna Love You Through It”.

Now it's forced smiles and baggy shirts

To hide what the cancer took from her

But she just wants to feel like a woman again

She said, "I don't think I can do this anymore"

He took her in his arms and said “That's what my love is for”

In her time in SL, Courtesan met and eventually married Ortho Vargas. Courtesans’ impact on Ortho was immediate. She mentioned to her friends that her greatest moment was when he took a picture of her hair and with that image he created the REDHEAD.

On the very last day of Relay for Life 2011, Courtesan DeCuir passed away from a brief illness. Her loss has transcended friendship and family.

The team at JCS decided to dedicate the ‘Devoted to a Cure’ logo for the 2012 Relay for Life to her.

The BASS GUITAR is the BC RICH READHEAD. The original graphic in the guitar is of Courtesans hair.

The Four Strings signify the four years Courtesan blessed us with her presence. 2007 to 2011. Each year symbolizing a year. The wings signify her Transition and Ascension into heaven. At the very top behind the neck of the Guitar you will see a heart; the shadows mean that she continues to reach out to everyone. You will also notice two streaks of water; the first streak is to remind us of the tears shed when we learned she had passed away. The Second streak is for the tears shed on the day of her memorial. Behind the wings are linked music notes. These represent the harmony Ortho and Courtesan shared with one another and to remind us of the music that brought them together.

The connected circles you see are really a C and an O = Courtesan and Ortho.

And finally the last partially filled in circle is called the circle of life. JCS believe that it takes a lifetime to really get to know someone, especially when that person accepts your hand and agrees to share that lifetime with you. They also feel that Courtesan was taken away too soon. So they left this circle partially unfinished to remind us all, just how precious life truly is.

Please, if you have the means, give to Relay for Life. No one is promised tomorrow. Only with your help can we give hope to those that are still trying to complete their Circle of Life.

Inside the World of Relay for Life - Part One -- Coco Lierfatte Reporting

Relay for Life is an amazing organization. It was founded in real life in 1985, and they established the organization in Second Life in 2004. The expansion of Relay for Life once they started in Second Life is tremendous; this season alone there are 96 teams, and over 2,000 relayers and the season hasn't even started! This season starts March 10th, 2012, and it's expected to be a great season this year. As the season's premiere approaches, I got to sit down with some of the people who help make Relay for Life possible.
