I Could’ve Danced All Night and Still Have Begged for More - Ccoursey reporting….

Ballrooms and Second Life should always have two things:  Romantic music and formal clothing.  I don't care how fancy the dance is, if someone is wearing biker gear it isn't the same.  Let's face it... Every girl needs the chance to dress up in Second Life and feel like the Princess she is.  There should be an atmosphere to offer the opportunity for a proposal, for a first date, or even just that 'I want you to know you're special' date.  Here are a few places to take that important someone...
The Waterfall Ballroom
The Waterfall Ballroom, just seems to be a ballroom in a waterfall when you first land.  It isn't.  The ballroom is beautiful, hidden behind the flowing water, the sim itself is gorgeous.  Bringing a date here would be perfect, with a romantic carriage ride, a stroll through the gardens, and feeding the swans.  For the more adventurous among us there is a Volcano venue, underwater caves, the opportunity to ride a manta ray or even Nessie, and everywhere you look there is something different to explore.  This ballroom and sim offer romantic dancing, music, and atmosphere, but it also has the opportunity for hours of entertainment.  I've already been back several times exploring since I found it, and will not include everything because it would ruin the surprise...  Let's just say there is a bit of everything from the magical to the more expected for romance.  The creator has put time and effort into the sim and it shows, it is a wonderful experience.  This sim is rated G.

Music: Goin' Country in Second Life- Ccoursey Reporting...

Stepping outside the rock to the other side of music I explore Country and Western.  I love all variety  of music and had a great time stepping out in my cowboy boots.  It isn't hard to find the atmosphere appealing, because I've found in the best clubs everyone is friendly, it is only the music that changes.  My first stop, you guessed it: Black Horse Country.

A kind-hearted blue-blood, a look into Marcus Lefevre’s Life -Mikile Vinciolo Reporting…

When you think of blood-blue, the gentry, the thought evokes rich, well-mannered, courtly, moneyed and, of course, the possible uptight attitude that gives the genteel permission to look down their long, lofty noses at those of us scramble to make ends meet. When meeting Marcus Lefevre, he changes one’s perception of this privied gaggle of fine-feathered geese. He does possess the money, fame, manners and regality that conjures the spirit of a powerful king, but he is the opposite of snobby, and he comes to understand us “regular” folks, as he was once one of us. He, in the words of pop rapper Drake, started from the bottom now he is here.

He made his fortune the traditional approach, through hard-work and diligence. He climbed the corporate ladder in the Realty industry and has never looked back with his sheer tunnel focus. Now, he luxuriates in the lap of luxury, continuing to work on his legacy, carving an imprint on SL that will sure outlast the impermanence of the physical accoutrements that this kind-hearted blood-blue worked so arduously to acquire.

Spotlight on Rebelmum Slade and her Star Journey Home- Mikile Vinciolo Reporting…

If ever there were an event in which you could take one those magical page-turning books that we once read, and turn them into a reality, how many of us would? Well, if Richard Geers Star Journey tale was ever one of your favorite reads that you wish to see spring to fruition, then Rebelmum Slade, or Rebs, her preferred moniker, has made your dreams a reality. Rebs has taken pieces of the tale and turned it into a sprawling garden rip right out of the Star Trek series. The sim boasts activities plentiful, with the aid of HUD travel and interaction. The sim also hosts other stationary activities, such as course that encourages self-reflection and internal dialogue to inspire change and self-help. If you are mentally prepared to take this journey, strap in and prepare for take-off into the galaxy of your own mind, and that of the Star Journey Gardens.

OpenSimulator Community Conference Announces High Fidelity CEO Philip Rosedale as Keynote Speaker

August 29, 2014 - The OpenSimulator Community Conference is pleased to announce Philip Rosedale, Founder and CEO of High Fidelity, Inc. will be a keynote speaker at the second annual OpenSimulator Community Conference, scheduled to take place virtually on November 8-9, 2014 in a virtual conference center designed for the event.
Mr. Rosedale’s keynote presentation will address the question, “What is the Metaverse?” and discuss the opportunity to develop an open platform for virtual reality over the internet, including new hardware devices that catalyze entirely new kinds of interactions between avatars.

In 1995, Philip Rosedale created an innovative Internet video conferencing product (called "FreeVue"), which was later acquired by RealNetworks where in 1996 he went on to become Vice President and CTO. In 1999, Rosedale left RealNetworks, founded Linden Lab and built a virtual civilization called Second Life, fulfilling his lifelong dream of creating an open-ended, Internet-connected virtual world.

Since leaving Second Life in 2010, Rosedale has worked on several experiments in distributed work and computing, including Coffee & Power and Worklist.net. In 2013, he co-founded High Fidelity Inc. to explore the future of a next-generation virtual reality system.

“Philip Rosedale is one of the foremost thinkers about virtual reality and the Metaverse today,” said conference chair Chris Collins. “We look forward to hearing his thoughts on the next generation of open Metaverse platforms, including OpenSimulator.”

The OpenSimulator Community Conference is an annual conference that focuses on the developer and user community surrounding the OpenSimulator software, an open-source platform that supports the creation of collaborative, immersive, distributed and social 3D virtual environments.

Organized as a joint production by AvaCon, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the growth of the metaverse, and the Overte Foundation, which manages code contributions for the OpenSimulator platform, the virtual conference features two days of presentations, workshops, keynote sessions, and social events across diverse sectors of the OpenSimulator user base.  Last year the first annual conference was attended virtually by 300 avatars, with thousands of viewers on the conference live video streams.
Registration for the virtual OpenSimulator Community Conference is free and opens on September 15, 2014.  The conference will also be live
streamed through UStream.

Dealing with Quitting Second Life © - Stareyes Galaxy Reporting

There will eventually be the time when any avatar needs to consider quitting Second Life © (SL). There are many reasons to leave, as there are for staying. Stareyes Galaxy quit SL for the time being, but not before she had to write about the experience.
I have only a few conjectures to make as to why people leave SL, since when they leave, generally they just vanish without a trace. Before I left, I met some of my closest friends and discussed the topic. There were some poignant reasons to leave, one of which seems to be breakups in relationships. I know some people who have left due to this, and some have returned. From these, I gather even a year or two may pass before they feel able to return to SL after a tortuous breakup. The emotions associated with separation from an avatar are just as real as those in real life. Curiously, I have also found people who have been found out in RL, having an SL relationship and therefore have needed to quit SL!
“Miss C.” sums her experience up: “Well, it gets under your skin. A trauma normally is the cleanest break and reason to leave and stay away. But many seem to come back after a year or so… is that quitting? but I guess it’s like any habit or activity that is rewarding or fills some need or experience... hard to let go even when reason says it is for the best. It has similarities to addiction but, I feel, it’s more subtle than that as it is a freedom and a behavior and a degree of control one is giving up.”
Stalking is another very disturbing trait that seems to follow on the heels of virtual relationships. I even have heard of stalkers going after the people behind the avatars, in real life. If this happens, even creating alts is too risky, so it seems best to stay out of SL forever.
The death of the real person behind the avatar of course is the ultimate end of us all. Unfortunately, many times there is no way to know. Sometimes, a RL friend of a deceased person sends group notices or contacts friends directly, informing of an avatar’s demise. Some sims have tombstones and memorials for avatars who have left due to the death of the SL account holder.
Aside from the real, everyday life imposing on one’s use of time, requiring avatars to leave SL, one interesting thing, as “Miss C” already noted, popped up: addiction. There are avatars who are so immersed in their SL experience that they neglect their real lives. Horror stories of parents starving children to death while tending to their virtual babies are the most extreme. Other addictions beside the internet-based ones, of course lead to similar results! In order to shed one’s habits there are techniques – alcoholics have their 13-step methods, and so on, some go “cold turkey”.
When I quit, I felt like a drug user without her fix. I felt like something very real was ripped off me. As I said, I returned a few times to say my goodbyes. This did not help at all as I craved to stay on longer than I intended.
Form my personal quitting on SL experience, this is the advice I wish to impart, in ten observations:
1. If you decide to quit, stay firm on that decision. Never look back, and don’t let yourself be talked around on your decision. Believe in your reasons to quit, they must be valid ones.
2. Set yourself a date when you are completely out. Bid your farewells before.
3. Be sure to get valid contact details for people you absolutely need to keep as your friends.
4. Leave a notice of leaving in your profile so you don’t need to go back to do that last bit (like I had to).
5. Examine your position from your RL standpoint. What do you have to replace what role SL had for you? Fill your free time with these people or activities. You may find your need to get back online dissipate sooner than later.
6. If you have professional ties within SL, be sure to part on friendly terms. Inform your employer and associates well ahead of time so they know how to adjust. Donate whatever you can to whom the items, land, and Lindens are owed.
7. Go on your SL account and terminate it, or at least give up your Premier status, in order to not have a financial impact down the line.
8. Do not create alts to go see your old haunts. You will be found out if you start conversing with people, and your craving to get back online is likely to increase, or in the opposite, you only will get bad vibes.
9. Do not worry what others are saying about you when you’re gone. Most likely they will forget about you soon enough. If not, and if this gets out to RL, see observation #10 below.
10. If the reason leading to your quitting involves harassing or criminal activity by an avatar or real-life person, be sure to contact Linden Lab as well as your local authorities. They may in fact be able to help you.

I ran these observations through with a fellow journalist and psychologist DoctorKaren Kanto who wished to add this: “Remember what was good in SL and bring it to bear in your RL, to enhance the RL experience. Let go of the SL negatives, they may be unimportant.” I think this was wery well put, as I have tried to make my avatar display the best of me in SL. Now, having had the experience, I might improve my real life persona, based on my SL learnings.
As for me, why I quit: time just ran out on me. When I joined SL, I was in a fortunate position at my Real Life work, allowing me to explore virtual worlds and interaction paradigms of virtuality. Getting online on SL was as natural as having breakfast. I took unnecessary liberties as well, maybe spending a bit too much on SL than my work warranted. Then again, there were times when exploring virtuality was a better use of my time than just idling along on my work PC. Since the beginning of this year things changed and instead of writing for SLE, I have real-life writing assignments that I have to honor which are likely to advance my RL standing as well.

I wish everyone the best in their first and Second Lives. I am already missing my friends and acquaintances in Second Life. Who knows, maybe we will meet again.

Romance alive and well in SL - Lacy Muircastle reporting ....

Apart from being incurably curious, I am also an incurable romantic, (we all have our failings don’t we.... Just look at my profile inworld and you will see what I mean.)  So it was with the utmost joy that I attended a marriage renewal service of note on Sunday 24th August.

The beautiful couple that are Blake Hambleton and Shannon Bramlington (Mr and Mrs Hambleton), owners of Sweethearts Jazz and accompanying businesses, have been married for five years and they decided to share their love with those that make their group the most romantic group in SL, their members and friends and reinforce their commitment to one another.

Lanai’s Diary-What does it mean to have humility?

As I sit and scribble my thoughts in my virtual diary for all to see. I feel that humanity is in chaos. Daily stresses of life plaque us all. Endless turmoil on the news, hard times, struggles, bad attitudes, mistrust and ignorance, it leaves us all affected in some way. For the most part I try to make sense of the world around me and believe that I have a purpose. We all do.

I was once a shy girl who hid from the world.  I barely made eye contact or spoke first. I spent a lot of time locked away in my bedroom as a child.  My outlet was writing. I had a little pink diary that I hid between my mattress and I poured out my heart in it almost every night. I still have it but it is too hard for me to read. Life wasn’t fair and I feel bad for that little girl who missed out on what should have been a childhood. I have no idea what it is like.  I think back at that little girl who felt so alone. But I think, if it wasn’t for the things she gone through, I would not be who I am today.

Being a hipster in SL (Part One) Lacy Muircastle reporting ....

Hipsters are people who enjoy clothing, music, food and activities outside of the social mainstream. If you want to embrace a hipster lifestyle of independent music, vintage clothes, and artisanal coffee in Second Life read on.

For those of you who are not aware what hipsters are, they are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.

Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are usually too "edgy" for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The "effortless cool" urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic.
