About Subcultures of SL-Becca Drascol Reporting...
Wednesday, April 29, 2015
becca drascol, child avies, culture, fairies, furries, mermaids, second life, subcultures, The SL Enquirer, tinies, vampires
1 comment
There are so many cultures in Second Life. Like so many virtual worlds, the power to create
is a strong part of the mix. It includes not only creating your avatar into
something fantasy based, but also RP (role play) for most situations. But
why exactly do subcultures exist? Is it the ability to be something
we cannot in RL? Perhaps it’s for the creation of it all. Or even to
relive something via your avatar, which could be the case in becoming a child
avatar or parent.
Being a vampire in SL myself, I can honestly
say it’s to be something that I have always loved the lore of. Stories, movies
and characters with abilities we do not have in
RL...immortality. Bloodlines is one of the top subcultures in Second
life. The Bloodlines web page shows us that approximately 133 thousand players
are registered within this role play system. For most involved in Bloodlines
it’s about family as well. The freedom to create a Vampire Clan, Lycan Horde,
or Human Guild, allows players to recruit friends and have different social
events within that group.
Mermaids...what lovely half human and half fish beings they
are. Who wouldn't want to immerse themselves into the fairytale of
being such a mystical creature? And moreover a creature with the talent to live
in the water or on land and yet be tied to a need for water leaves
vulnerability.
Furries come in many a form. Again another large subculture of
SL. Simply put animal characters with human personalities. Many a
club and hangout is devoted to furries of SL. Some exclusive, others welcome
any and all avies.
Fairies beautiful sometimes winged but usually human in appearance have
been in many a folktale and mythology. I personally have always loved
fairies. For me the draw to them was how they dress, their wings and
just the pure almost innocent look of a fairy.
Tinies...well who can resist cuteness? Am I right? One avatar all rolled
up into a very small package. Special made avies with the intent of being the smallest
avatars around. One would assume the allure to being a tiny is the size and
cuteness.
Finally Child Avies...love em or hate em they
too are an intrigal part of our SL world. Some relive the nostalgia
of childhood via their child avie, while some others also choose to be a child
vampire forever immortalized as a young soul, unable to die but forever within
the innocent naivety that is childhood. Cute clothes and a pint sized you...the
allure that is the beauty of all sweet and pure. While moderate and
adult sims have to have different rules per TOS on child avies there are many a
child avatar and many places where it is more than acceptable to be a lil
one. Some also with the popularity of SL pregnancy have chosen to be
the "child" of others within SL. Another outlet to gain
the bonds and closeness of family through role play.
Existence:
But the question here is
why do these subcultures exist? What draws people to them and why do
they have such a following? Thus far you have read my idea on why
they're here within SL. And now I'll ask one person of each subculture why that
subculture exists to them.
We'll start with Bloodlines which covers
Vampires/Lycan/Human cultures all into one:
Becca Drascol:
Why do you think the Bloodlines subculture exists in SL?
Noir8Sagato Resident: First time for rp but now it is for the
creator a money maker.
Becca Drascol: Why
does bloodlines exist for you personally?
Noir8Sagato Resident: Family and role-play.
Furries:
Becca Drascol: Why
does the furry subculture exist in SL (in your opinion?)
ZeBooty Resident: Well Furries have always existed. And SL allows
people to play as their
sonas fairly easily.
Becca Drascol: And why
does it exist for you personally? Anything that makes it special for you?
ZeBooty Resident: Why it exists... That's hard to say. And I
don't really know how to answer that.
For Mermaids, Fairies, and Tinies I got the
opinion of an SL resident who has been a lil bit of everything:
Becca Drascol: Why
does the mermaid culture exist in SL?
Aurora Yardley:
Mers...are for me truly free. They live in communities or solitary the groups
that gather are like everyone else in SL. They have homes ...dance clubs (the
dances are in 3 dimensions) and graceful.
Becca Drascol: Why do
you feel the Fairy subculture exists?
Aurora Yardley: Ok ...there is a common link to fantasy
creatures Mers...Fae. Petites and tinies ...they all are personal expressions
of one's inner self and like human groups they like to gather and share ideas
avie adaption tips. An endless list they are open to each other and
to the human public.
Aurora Yardley: The sims they all gather in generally are
tailored to their needs. Mermaids and mermen go where there is water anywhere
and mix with the normal humans over the entire scope of SL... Fairy
folk mix in well with fantasy sims very well, they can be
very cute, or devilishly naughty playing pranks. Again like with any
living thing they are unique and no two are alike.
Becca Drascol: Oh I'm
sure there is a lot of creativity to each and for each person.
Aurora Yardley: For each genre it is an endless scope of
variation. I collect skins and adapt them to roles I take on.
Finally we come to child avies:
Becca Drascol: Why
does the child av subculture exist in SL?
BabyGirlVivi Resident: It is a way of life in which they choose to
relive something they didn't get to live in real life, sometimes reliving what
they couldn't in real life gives them closure and helps them battle through
things easier in life reliving it in SL by being more of what they would've
liked to live out more like than they may have RL.
Becca Drascol: Some
people choose to adopt the role of being another avatars child in SL. Is this
something you would do or have done?
BabyGirlVivi Resident: Yes I would love to do that. I have longed to
find a family that would love to take in an avatar like mine. It isn't easy to
come by, some may freak about it others really enjoy seeing avatars like
myself. Another avatar that enjoys a child avatar understands the reasoning for
us the way we are and are a great help to us if they take us in. The connection
of being another avatar's child in SL is again reliving what we maybe didn't
get to in RL, finally with another avatar's help we can feel at home, loved,
cared about, and nourished with open arms and heart of the chosen avatar that
wants the role of a child avatar in their SL lives. And at same time we can
make fantasy for those that choose to do so, that they struggle to have RL.
To Sum it up:
Rather for fantasy or
creativity we create the avatar we feel comfortable in and then we seek a place
to belong and we find that place among some form of SL subculture. Be you Vamp,
Lycan, Human, Furry, Mermaid, Tiny or Fairy, we all have found our place for
our own reasons and our own escape into the world which we call our second
lives.

Spotlight on Renaissance AV Consulting Agency

Creating a unique avatar look can
be a painstaking task for anyone first starting out in Second Life or for
residents who need a change. Browsing the endless list of items on SL
Marketplace, in world malls and shops across the grid can take forever. We all
could use a shopping companion that can help us make decisions based on our
budget, needs and wants. Renaissance AV Consulting
Agency provides just that!
Kamilla Vayandar and Tankgirl Zaytsev
will consult and guide you every step of the way making your avatar make over
less stressful on you. The SL Enquire caught up with Kamilla Vayandar to
learn more about Renaissance AV Consulting Agency and their services
SLE: What separates Renaissance AV Consulting
Agency from other makeover services in Second Life?
Kamilla:
The work we do is completely customized following the needs of our clients. We
have a chat with the client, trying to find out what they want, eventually show
us pictures of what they have in mind, may it be actors, models or other
avatars they may have seen on SL. It’s like if you are going to see a fashion
designer instead of going in a “ready to wear” shop. We are there to give them
advice and coach them in the SL jungle.
SLE: What do you think
is the most important thing that avatars should consider when creating their
look?
Kamilla: As I say on my blog, the shape is basic; you
need a good shape in order to look awesome, different. For me, it’s really important;
this is what will set you apart from other avatars. All the art consists in
matching this shape with the skin that will represent who you are, how you want
others to see you. From there, everything is possible.
SLE: Do you help both
men and women?
Kamilla:
Sure!!! We would miss something if not serving both men and women, and even
would extend it to whatever image they want to have. There are pictures of
avatars we have made in our gallery at the shop. All we want is for clients to
unleash their imagination.
SLE: How much do
residents usually spend on makeovers at other places? Do you look for deals to
help save them Lindens?
Kamilla:
Our prices go from 500LS an hour of
styling to 6000LS for a complete customization, but I am intransigent on the
shape and skins, there are some cheap skins but rarely beautiful. However, when
it comes to accessories, hair, eyes, clothes, we look for the best prices and
adapt to our clients’ needs. We always try to find good deals.
SLE: What kind of
services do you first recommend to your clients when they come to you for help?
Kamilla:
Always depends on their needs and wishes of course, every client is unique,
they can come for a simple restyling and take the option by the hour, or a complete
customized service, guiding them through shops, advise them on the clothes and
accessories they choose.
SLE: What advice would
you give to someone looking to change their avatar appearance?
Kamilla:
Not to be in a hurry to try new mesh bodies, like TMP body, Maitreya or other
new systems, they look really good but there is not much choices for body or
head shapes at the moment. I personally think that designers are still going to
improve them and offer more possibilities to personalize your avatar in the way
you want. We currently propose at least hands and feet appliers (slink system),
as the hands and feet of basic avatars are really ugly. You can already find
many suitable footwear and accessories with those appliers.
SLE: Is there anything
else you would like our readers to know?
Kamilla:
Yes, I would like to invite people to visit our sim, we will be delighted to
have a talk around a cup of tea and cupcakes and to explain what we do. Chats
are for free and we love ideas exchanges and useful conversations. We are
currently arranging the sim around the shop, so it may be worthwhile to visit
it, have a walk and relax, or maybe take pictures? Smiles.

Let’s Take a Tour through London City- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Stretched over 1500 kilo meters with over 8
million population London, the Capital of England is set over River Thames in
real life. The London City at Second Life has tried to bring a small part of
London’s favorite attractions for its residents. Torric Rodas and Billy
Arentire have tried their best to bring and relive London in Second Life. A
community in itself, London City is one of the most favoured destinations in
Second Life. With total traffic over 78,846; over thousands of residents visit
the place every day. There are residential properties and commercial complexes
which attract people from all over the world.
Photograph Credits: Abhishek997 Aiten |
When we teleport, we first enter the Soho and
Regent Park which overlooks a circular public meeting area surrounded by the
megastores. One such store is the freebie store which is a great attraction.
Night clubs, pubs, music venues make the place a live even at night. It is a
place for showbiz. As we walk along the paved pathway, we see the beautiful Big
Ben, towering to the sky, a true replication of real life followed by the Tower
Bridge on River Thames. While walking along, subconsciously, I sang the nursery
rhyme, “London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady.”
It was in the evening, the sun was going down
and a rainbow drew its colors across the skies. The shimmering, glistening
water invited us to try boating along the river. Ironically, another nursery
rhyme purged my thoughts, “Row your boat gently down the stream merrily life is
but a dream.” Following the river, we crossed the bridge, entering the shopping
society.

Shops ranging from clothes, skins, shapes,
make ups, accessories etc. scored the area. Few main stores and few satellite
shops with a total of 70 shops are located in the area. After a row of shops,
residential apartments and complexes start. One may rent these apartments and
houses or rent a parcel of land. The available properties with variable prices
and prims to rent are available here http://mainlandlondon.blogspot.co.uk/p/rentals.html.

London City closely follows the real life
events at London as they happen. The major attractions are The Crown Pub,
Juiced Nightclub, Substation Nightclub, Worlds End Pub, Madame Lala’s London
Revue Bar, Regents Park Hub, Regents Park Shopping Mall, Regents Park Freebie
Megastore, Concert Area, Trafalgar Square Nelson’s Column and the Broadcasting
Centre in the Soho and Regents Park area at London City. In North London City,
various plots are available to Build Your Own Home, Churchill Arms Pub,
Highgate Cemetery, The Boat Lake and The Litter Bin is located. In the West of
London City, we can find the residential houses; park and picnic area and the
unpacking area or the sandbox can be found.
The landmarks to these destinations can be viewed here http://mainlandlondon.blogspot.co.uk/p/mainland-london-destinations.html.
Among the above, newest attractions that have
been added are the Broadcasting Centre, Litter Bins and the High Gate Cemetery.
The litter bins amused me the most as they are spread across the area where
people might throw away amazing things, sometimes even dump money. It is kind
of fun to check these bins around the land.
To sum up, London City is a great place to meet and greet, have fun or
event go hunting and shopping. Walk along the roads, row a boat or travel in
tour buses to explore, visit or live here.

There are three creators out there that would shout an
enthusiastic “yes!” to this question.
These creators are Insatia Jharls, who is the creator behind ISBJ; B Y T
E (bytedreams.slade), the creator behind Second Nature and Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
(toomuch4u2, creator of Queen Designs.
All three are one
of many creators that have their fingers on the pulse of spring fashion. Insatia Jharls, for instance, specializes in
the creation of skins, makeup and much more since 2009. When asked about current SL Spring makeup
trends, she explained: “Current spring makeup trends in SL are displaying
brightened pastel colors along with a light airy look…just the right amount of
a cotton candy pink or light purple lipstick and just barely there eyeshadow.”
Jharls also says that the trends in SL reflect RL makeup
trends too. She explains, “More women in
RL are expressing themselves this spring with bright colored hair, along with
bright lipstick and eyeshadow colors…and yes, these trends are reflecting a
hint of RL trends, too…”
In keeping with the current Spring-related trends,
Jharls’ contends that her Jonquel skin line is not only the newest item
available at ISBJ, but that it firmly represents the freshest Spring related
makeup available. Jharls explains, “Our
Jonquel eyeliners and lipsticks are a great representation of spring [because
they have] the right amount of pastel colors for a day out and [include]
perfect reds and warm colors for a night out in spring.”
Besides Spring being an aided motivation in the creation
of her skin and makeup like, Jharls also creates skins and makeup that are not
only high quality, but also specialize in ethnic skin tones. “The market” she
explains, “…is lacking and I got inspired to help the women in SL express
themselves accurately and flawlessly no matter what their race may be.”
Spring
Clothing: What’s Trending Now?
B Y T E (bytedreams.slade) let the SL Enquirer know that
in addition to bright colors, Spring also conveys a sense of renewal. In keeping with Spring’s sense of renewal, B
Y T E recently added what she describes as a “one-piece athletic cut swimsuit
that has a tribal flame motif on the front,” to her marketplace page. As inspiration, B Y T E relies on jelly-bean
influenced colors in the creation of her athletic cut swimsuit. When asked why jellybeans, B Y T E responds,
“Now what is more spring than jellybeans and flowers? I also released a 3 piece
set and 2 other swimsuits prior to this one…and all these releases come with
multi-color huds and appliers. I love giving my customers options J!”
Yet despite giving her customers options, B Y T E refuses
to break down what specific trends by category…and perhaps by season. “I shy away from trends,” she explains. “Trends” she continues, “mean ‘same or
similar to something else’ to me. So I
don’t buy, dress, or design based on anyone else’s prescribed fashion trends.”
With this in mind, B Y T E contends that she wants her customers to create
their own fashion trends via the purchase of her creations. She explains, “I want my customers to wear my
clothing and create their own trend J!”
As an SL clothing creator, B Y T E specializes in
creating clothes for female avatars, and has done so for close to three
years. Based on her experience, she
finds that her Horizon dress is her best seller. She explains, “It started out as just a sexy
dress with a flexible skirt/hem for classic avatars; when implants like Lolas
and Phatazz came along, I included appliers with this dress and it took off
flying!” When asked what made the
Horizon dress unique, B Y T E says, “I think people like this dress because of
its combination of transparent and opaque fabric, making for a very sexy dress
that reveals and covers at the same time J!”
Thus, in addition to vibrant colors, customers are vying
for clothing that is sexually appealing, yet still demure enough to be
considered sophisticated and unique. B Y
T E adds, “I would say the 'fatpacks' as huds are the biggest and most
important trend right now. Appliers have
become more of a staple item instead of a trend - particularly for non-mesh
pieces.”
Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
(toomuch4u2) Talks Spring Fashion
When asked about SL Spring Fashion trends, Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
(toomuch4u2), let’s the readers of SL Enquirer know that items that show off
those mesh bodies are what is in. Not
only does she echo the vibrant color sentiment mentioned by B Y T E and Insatia
Jharls, she adds that additional accessories designed to enhance clothing also
echo the renewel spirit of Spring. She
explains, “My newest fashion item in terms of clothes would be peekaboo dresses
in vibrant colors…complete with matching clutches accented in diamonds. The whole look lends itself to an afternoon
brunch…that also transitions over into evening wear. Afterall, Spring represents color color color
after a dismal winter!”
Şℌε
ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
comes from a family of creators, and has been creating fashion since 2012. She specializes in jewelry, specifically
earrings, necklaces, waist chains, bracelets…the whole gamut. She also creates dresses, and has her hand on
the pulse of what is trending now. She
explains, “Dresses with cutouts are very popular and trending now! A glimpse of midriff or a panel opened in the
back for a *wow* effect is hot!” She further contends that SL Clientale can
also see these SL fashion trends reflected in RL, and admits that she relies on
the RL runways for inspiration. She
explains, “I love fashion monitoring in rl; it’s refreshing to be able to offer
the same looks in not just my store, but to see it in others also…”
Şℌε
ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
adds that her own knack for fashion inspires her SL line, too. “Honey” she says, “I’m a fashionista in rl….I
inspire myself!!! Extravaganza Eleganzaaaa!! Hahaha!!!!”
In contrast to B Y T E, Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
was willing to break down SL current fashion trends as follows:
·
Shoes. According to Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ,
the wedge is still holding court! She
explains, “Right now, customers are vying for shoes with daring patterns, as
well as stilettos that incorporate accents of gold, silver and diamonds! They desire to exude wealth, but at a
reasonable price…” When asked her reaction to this current shoe trend, Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
loudly exclaims, “Ring it in baby…ring it in!”
·
Skin and Makeup. While Insatia Jharls and Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
both agree that bright colors are what is trending for Spring, Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
adds, ”A nude lip is still trending, too…as well as bright colors like oranges,
magentas, etc.”
·
Jewelry. Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
wants all SL Fashionistas to know, that If you want to know what is trending in
Spring jewelry, it would be best to take a look at what is trending in Queen
Designs first! “I have based my
designs…” she explains, “…on jewelry fashions featured on the popular
television series ‘Empire’! If you watch
that show, you will see delicate golds, as well as diamonds are what is hot for
Spring.” Nonetheless, Şℌε
ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
cautions that jewelry should be worn in tasteful moderation. She adds, “You don’t want to overwhelm your
attire with jewelry, because jewelry is meant to accentuate your avatar, not overpower it J!” To
better understand what Şℌε
ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
means, check out her BooBoo Kitty Line of Jewelry currently being featured at
Queen Designs! She explains, “…the
BooBoo Kitty Line of Jewelry is a definite must see, must have! In fact, it
will be debuting at the P.H.A.T Fashion Fair that will be happening from April
29 to May 3!” This, along with the debut
of her *Jasmine* Line will be offered at a substantial discount during the
P.H.A.T Fashion Fair, so please don’t miss out!
Three
Creators Talk Spring Fashion for Mesh Bodies
Many may be pained by the current Mesh Bodies fashion
trend, but it is not a trend that is going away anytime soon. As Insatia Jharls explains, “Mesh bodies are
a growing trend that is gaining more followers every day. The fashion related
to mesh bodies is also gaining popularity because the clothes are very high
quality, vibrant, and ultra-realistic…”
In keeping with the newness of Spring, mesh bodies not
only rely on clothing that is bold and vibrant, but that also accentuate the
mesh’s shape. “Fashions…” Explains
Jharls, “…are created specifically for a mesh body….it is meant to enhance the
look of the mesh shape, [so] the fit is very accurate. In contrast, fashions
with mesh materials won't necessarily fit the avatar shape to the best of
abilities of fashions created for the mesh body.”
B Y T E adds to this analysis by explaining, “….mesh
material is the extra texture layer SL built in, this layer tends to work on
objects and clothing, including mesh objects like mesh bodies. It allows for slightly more 3d-like detail in
a textured item, be it clothing, or buildings, or whatever.” As if to echo this
sentiment, Şℌε ℬαd Ѡitℌ Iէ ℭαℜţεŁŁ
contends, “The biggest offering that fashion for mesh bodies has is offering
women who choose to have fuller and more beautiful bodies a lot of wonderful
choices for fashion. Like regular mesh
clothing, be mindful that [clothes for mesh bodies] are still designed with
mesh material….however, they simply offer appliers as well.”
All appliers and mesh bodies aside, this year’s Women SL
Spring Fashion Spring introduces boldness, as well as a sense of renewal to
customers who seek to embrace the latest fashion trends!
