A Surprising Lack of “Accessibility” for the Disabled in SL- LillyLacewing Reporting.

Empty Halls in the Orthopedic Shops, and Disability Hangouts.

In a world where everything is accessible to those with physical limitations, I’m very surprised to see there aren’t more places dedicated to the disabled. With the exception of the A+A Orthopedic and Disability Hangout, all other inquiries either lead me to a landmark that traps me under the disability hangout’s actual floor (highly inaccessible, or places that are more like stores that sell a cane or two, here and there.

With so many across the world suffering from debilitating and chronic illnesses, I’m sad to see there aren’t more places for those who are ill to gather together in a friendly, supportive community. The aforementioned shop seems to only host the occasional camper, and despite my exhaustive searches, I find nothing in the way of events for the disabled…unless you count the fetish type events. In this case I don’t, no offence meant to those with the fetish, but as a young disabled woman, I would love to be able to find a place where I can chat with those who not only understand my stories, but can share their own as well. That being said, I’d still gladly cover said, (and other,) fetishes in future articles!  ;)

A+A Disability, Orthopedic Shop, and Hangout: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Kilmarta/15/132/22

For a world where everyone can find something to enjoy, once again, those with disabilities, just like in RL, are highly under represented. One stunning example of a place I cannot believe isn’t more heavily trafficked is Park Art at Frantastica. Park Art is a location for those suffering from Parkinson’s to share their art. Before visiting Frantastica, I never realized that one of the facets of Parkinson’s, a painful and debilitating movement disorder, included a strong creative, and artistic drive.  This is often exacerbated by their medications.

Slurl for Park Art at Frantastica:

One example of a location I wish had more little green dots when I hover over the mini-map? Virtual Ability, one of the most detailed, and resource heavy disability locations in SL. They feature classes to help disabled newbies learn the ins and outs of Second Life, and host a “garden” where you can find large amounts of art inspired by all types of disabilities. I’ve been there a handful of times, and am always the only one there.

Virtual Ability:

After much hunting and searching I came across a place called The Haven, a club for the disabled, and home to the Crip Chicks Club, a club for wheelchair bound/disabled women. Both the main dance floor, and the CCC were deserted. As was Taupo Aquatic Center, and Club Access Elite, an aquatic sports center for the disabled. After taking a quick, easy, therapeutic dip, I gave up my search for the day, disappointed to be the only soul present at all these places with such great potential.

The Haven:

For such a large community, we sure do seem to be overlooked so easily. That being said, I obviously have not explored ALL the options out there, because not every one is easy to find via the usual search term buzz words. If I’m wrong, and some of you know of places that are bouncing and wiggling, (because we won’t be jumping, and running…) please IM me to let me know all about your disabled hangout!

Taupo Aquatic Center and Club Access Elite:

For now, though, I’m simply grateful that places like Second Life exist at all, because I couldn’t just pack it on up, and go to the beach in RL without it causing me massive pain, let alone climb up the mountains, surf, ride the horses, carnival rides, and many, many more activities I’ve missed in RL and can now happily do again in SL.

For the second year in a row, the Second Life Music Community is holding a series of concerts to benefit Stand Up 2 Cancer.  This year with a twist.  Second Life is so very diverse and so is Stand Up 2 Cancer, now having a presence in three countries.  The US, The UK, and Canada.  All Lindens donated will be divided evenly between the three countries.  At each event there will also be kiosks with the ability to donate directly via credit card to each country, allowing sl residents to ensure their donations are going closer to their own countries.  To Still Braveheart's knowledge a fund raiser like this has never been done in Second Life before.

I did want to explain a bit about about Stand Up 2 Cancer if you are not familiar with it.  It actually falls under the Entertainment Industry Foundation and was founded by a couple of women, Katie Couric being one of them.  They chose to take an innovative approach to ending cancer and developed dream teams of doctors both domestically and internationally.  the dream teams are comprised of some of the best doctors from all over the world, coming together to work towards ending cancer. Another important thing to note is that 100% of all donations goes directly to research and not obscure things entitled "Programs"  or CEO salaries.

THIS IS WHERE THE END OF CANCER BEGINS:

The UK -- https://www.standuptocancer.org.uk/
The US -- http://www.standup2cancer.org/
Canada -- http://www.standup2cancer.ca/

Germany does have a Facebook Page -- https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stand-Up-2-Cancer-Germany/307835426038035?fref=ts

Best Body Art: Tattoos and Piercing in SL- Tea Couturier Reporting...

Tattoos and piercing are very popular in SL as they are also in RL. They are a way to add personal style to your look.  It can always be hard to know which tattoo or piercing is not only right for you but also looks good on you. The best part is they aren’t painful and permanent so you can remove or changed your tats and piercings at any time!
If you’re looking for the perfect trendy piercing, tattoo or even both here is a few places I have found across the grid which I feel offer great quality body piercings and art.

:SS:. Divinity Tattoo Unisex
This is a lovely tattoo. It is unisex and very nicely created. I love the writing tattoo part on the body and the words are written clearly and not using faint ink. A perfect biker’s tattoo
Priced at only 100L

SuPerBia - BrEnT (bag)

With some tattoos in SL the tribal look can be very over powering in design and this makes it look not so real. However, with this tattoo it has been created using such a faint ink that allows you to still see the design. I also like the look. It does not cover the whole body but still looks trendy. Priced at 375L it is a bit pricey but if you have had tattoos before and know that it is something you will always want to wear it may be the right price and quality for you.

TAOX - Cloth Appliers - Fingerless TaTToo Lace Gloves Black - FoR SLiNK HaNDs oNLY

Tattoos on hands have become very popular and if you always wanted one in RL but was not sure if you would regret it, here is your chance to have one in SL and be trendy. If this is the first time you are seeing this here is a little bit of information on it and what it contains:

* Hud Fingerless Lace Gloves Black for Slink implants Hands.
1 hud Tattoo layer
1 hud Gloves layer
This Gloves is exclusively for SLiNK implants av.enhanced "hands"
You must have this implant to see the tattoo.
The Gloves are applied with a hud offering different options.
You will find it in your package if you buy this item. There are NO Normal Layers.
You can EASILY wea just one glove, just click on this hud.
In the implant kit "Slink" there is a HUD to enable or disable your tattoos so you can wear the tattoo by clicking it on.
Priced at only 50L for your SLiNK hands I think it is perfect.

SuPerBia EaRs *PierCinGs & PLuG* -M&F- (bag)

To find the right piercing which not only looks good on you and also is uniquely different can be tricky but this piercing also comes with ear plugs.  I feel it has that style which will give you that edgy look. It is unisex and the plugs for the ears can also change color. Priced at 199L this is a good price for such a badass product.

:HV: Payne [Metal]

If you are looking for piercing with a little more edge then this is the right one for you. This pack includes:
Payne [Metal] facial piercing set with Color Change (for the 2 jewels under the lower lip) ,F.A.Q note card  and includes Pose stand for fitting .
However, for that edgy look this will cost you a little bit more. Priced at 260L but for me it is worth the price.

So whatever badass style you are looking for in tattoos or piercings you will be sure to find it in SL.

Happy Body Art Shopping!

How do you spend your time in Second Life?-Becca Drascol Reporting

In a virtual world with limitless possibilities for something to do, we could be bored per-say, but Second Life has tons to offer as a form of entertainment, work, and many other things to explore and do. There's always a new venue of some sort popping up, always some new idea that one of our fellow residents has thought up and made a virtual reality of.  When we ask  how do you spend your time in SL, I must first off answer that myself.

For me it's a bit of it all, I have my RL spouse to spend time with, in all I do within SL. We have a virtual family as well as a few friends. I not only co-own a club but do work within our world in other venues. From dancing, to hosting and even creating and building, I can honestly say I've done a bit of everything in SL.  On occasion I like to go fishing, out to a club to hang out and listen to music. I've bowled, played SL's board games, and really am always looking to maybe try something new. Romance is another favorite thing of mine, and there are literally a ton of venues laid out beautifully to relax, and hang out with your special someone. Well now you know some of the things I spend my time doing in SL, so let's venture out and find out what others do.

Interviews:

Becca Drascol: How do you spend your time in Second Life?

mariejane42 Resident: With friends and family.

Becca Drascol: Is there anything else of interest you do in SL that you would like to mention?

mariejane42 Resident: Let's see, well  I  work  a lot,  and  I  love to spend  my time being a good  SL mom.

Becca Drascol: Aww great :)

Becca Drascol: How do you spend your time in Second Life?

RainyRendezvous Resident: Exploring, shopping, talking with friends and dancing at The Cotton Club every other week.

Becca Drascol: How do you spend your time in Second Life?

hewholooms Resident: hanging out and watching paint dry lol

Becca Drascol: How do you spend your time in Second Life?

LaceyNightshade Resident: I like going fishing, gold hunting and trivia. I also like dancing and  hanging out at clubs doing contests and going to romance places.

Becca Drascol: How do you spend your time in Second Life?

Taima Fang: Working the club, building and sometimes just relaxing.

For the most part I think all people in SL make SL their own in some way or another. Rather they spend their time in relaxing ways, working hard or simply enjoying others within our world…. We all spend time differently. That’s what makes us all unique. Some may like to kick back while others are always on the move. I say get out there and spend your time doing whatever makes you the happiest. After all, SL is a past time; our second lives.

The Thunder from D0wnunder - Lacy Muircastle reporting ....

In real life D0wnunder Resident aka Down, lives in Adelaide Australia.  He was introduced to Second Life through some friends from another virtual reality site.  He said “once I saw that you could sing here I loved it straight away.”  That’s because music and singing are woven into the very fabric of his being.

He has been in SL for a year now, and started his SL singing career in a karaoke lounge called o-lounge.  It quickly became a favourite haunt of his and he regularly visited the venue and sang to his heart’s content.
Down said “Music is the key to your soul it changes moods.  I couldn’t believe a world without music, when you’re sad it picks you up.”

In real life he was in an original band and they recorded two original songs which made the top 10 internet list, but that was quite a while ago.    These days he is part of two cover bands two bands, Alien Nation and 2coustic.  He said “I love to mimic singers to improve my vocal range and party covers appeal to me as they get the crowd into the swing of things and they all know the songs and sing along.”

Down was raised by parents who loved music, he recalled “I think Neil Diamond was the first artist I heard, my Dad loves him and played the record continually.”  His own personal musical influences are Pearl Jam, Creed, Rob Thomas, Birds of Tokyo and Inxs.  Rob Thomas in particular resonates with him, he added “He is an amazing song writer and writes from his heart.”

I asked Down what his all-time favourite piece of music was and why? He replied “I remember lying in bed with a radio station on and this song came on called Smells like teen spirit, I just went wow, and had to have my head as close to the speakers as possible.  The guitar riffs were amazing and Kurt Cobain had such a voice.”

Currently he is listening to a band called the Cat Empire who are an alternative band from Melbourne, who he said record some very catchy songs.

I asked him what value he thought SL offered musicians?  He said “Being in a band here in Adelaide, I do use SL to practice singing new songs, but also to entertain. I do believe it offers musicians new avenues to maybe tour, you never know who could be listening.   I’ve also had people from my country ask where they can see my band.”

Down sincerely believes that the SL venues that promote live music are pivotal to the success of SL musicians.  He said “To be honest without venues there are no musicians.  I take my hat off to venues like the Colour Factory, Kameleonz, Acoustic Cave, Cafe Musique and the Flamingo for offering us musicians a place to show our talents.”

I asked him what’s on the cards for him in the near future.  He concluded “I will continue to sing here on SL for as long as possible and will also be  looking at a few new bands, but I will be sticking around for a while as I love what I do here and until the people get sick of me, lol, I will stay.”
If you want a thoroughly enjoyable music experience you will pop in to one of his regular shows.

You can pick up his inworld schedule @    http://theush000.wix.com/d0wnunder
