GeekSpeak SL - Why Do We Have Rituals? Saturday 26th March at 12pm SLT

Breaking News: Science has discovered that the turning of the sun is forecast by talking bunnies that lay chocolate eggs.  Happy Easter to everyone!

Why do we have these stories and these rituals?  Why are they sometimes so weird?  They can outlast any religious basis and sometimes continue for hundreds or thousands of years.  Do we need crazy stories and rituals?  Will there ever be a time when we are all completely rational? Should we be?

Come to GeekSpeak and tell us about the strangest rituals you know of.  Tell us about the rituals that matter to you and why?  Put on your Xmas hat and wear your bunny slippers and let's talk about fun stories and ancient rituals. Remember, if you do not live in America, that SL time has gone forward by an hour.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE HEARTS HEAVEN BALLROOM- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Heart's Heaven Ballroom

For many, Second Life is an escape from the daily stressors of the real world and for others it is their opportunity to live as normal of a life as they possibly can due to medical conditions, and terminal illness.
People connect and interact from the inside out and most of the time leave their real life problems at the door, stepping into a virtual world with freedom to explore their greatest imaginations.

Heart’s Heaven Ballroom is a testament to the strength and courage of one woman who fought hard until the very end. Her Second Life was a way to find happiness and share it with others when her health prevented her from living life the way most of us take for granted.
Heartlite Jewel was a member of our Second Life community who spent her time creating a romantic ballroom where visitors can come dance and enjoy the atmosphere. When it was here time to depart this world, her wish was for Heart’s Heaven to continue on. Her dear friend Lynn Washborne continues her memory by carrying on Ms. Jewel’s dream.

Lynn Washborne

Interview with Lynn Washborne

Hi Lynn, I would like to give my condolences for the loss of your friend. Can you share with our readers who Heartlite Jewel was and how you met?

Lynn: Thank you. I met Heartlite in Heart in the 2008. She was introduced to me by a Friend. He told me she was someone that needed help with the sim. And threw my name to her. He sent me a Landmark and that was when I started as a General Manager for heart. To me Heartlite was a person that if she knew of someone that needed help she would be the one to help. Or if someone needed just someone to talk to she wanted to be the one to help.

When was Heart’s Heaven Established? Where you a part of its beginnings?

Lynn: I think heart's Heaven was Established in 2006 – 2007. I was not there to help her in the earlier days. I came later, as a General Manager.

What was Heartlite’s vision for Heart’s Heaven Ballroom when it was time for you to take over?

Lynn: To Keep Hearts Heaven open for people to come on down and enjoy and have a great time.

Having an illness is not easy, but Ms.Jewel still worked very hard on Heart’s Heaven Ballroom. Can you tell us about this venue and how you are keeping it going in her memory?

Lynn: I've kept the name of the ballroom. And we also put up an memorial so people can go up there and visit.

Heartlite Jewel Memorial

Have you made any changes to the original venue?

Lynn: Yes, We did change the music. We are allowing more kinds of music, from Jazz, rock, soft rock, pop. Soon we are going to start having contests. We also changed up the venue, but it's still open didn’t want to put walls up I liked the open look on the water

Ballroom

What type of events do you host?
Lynn: I don’t host. RL gets the best of me. But there are times I do try to DJ, but i don’t have set times.

Are you currently hiring?
Lynn: yes! We are Hiring. We are looking for Host's and Dj's

In keeping Heartlite Jewel’s memory alive, can you tell us what your hopes are and how people can help keep this venue going strong?

Lynn: well we would like to see more people coming to the ballroom, that was Hearts big thing always trying to get people into the ballroom. It will always be free to everyone to come hang out, dance and meet new people. We are open to any suggestions to as what you (Readers) would like to see in a venue.

BALLET PIXELLE PRESENTS "ARCHIDANCE" AN ORIGINAL BALLET- Sunday March 27th 5pm SLT

􀀀

Ballet Pixelle® will reprise an original ballet, “Archidance”, opening Sunday, March 27 at 5:00 pm

An Open Preview will be presented for Ballet Pixelle members and subscribers on Wednesday, March 23rd at 5:00 pm 2016.  "Archidance" was first performed in 2011.  Music is by Emmy-award winning composer Kurt Bestor.

In Ballet Pixelle's continuing exploration of the similarities, differences, and interactions of digital, virtual, and physical movement and dance, we have simplified movement into its basic architecture.  And brought digital, virtual, and physical dance together in one ballet.

How is dance constructed?  What is its architecture?  Form, color, shape?  Moving steps, turns, jumps?  High, slow, and medium height movements?  Sharp, flowing, dropping movement?  Let's look at the present, past, and future of dance and see how one influences the other.

First, we look at these influences and notation of a current ballet.

Then we see key figures in the construction of dance through the ages, including physical dancers mixed with our virtual dancers.

Finally, working with spheres, cubes, and triangles, we can see animated dancers -- who are not real people at all -- and then our virtual dancers who are real people all over the world -- Canada, England, Estonia, Japan, Portugal, Spain, and all time zones of the United States and Hawai`i, dancing together in the future of the art.  What are the similarities?  What are the differences?

Join us for an evening of mind-bending thought and an homage to dance.  Leave the theatre wondering...   Discussions following all performances.

Performances take place on Sundays at 5:00 pm and Wednesdays at 5:00 pm at the Ballet Pixelle Theater:

Come early because seats fill quickly.

*********************************************

Ballet Pixelle® is the first performing ballet company in the virtual global community Second Life.  Says the Company's founder, Inarra Saarinen, “As artistic director of the Company since its inception, I have enormous pride in Ballet Pixelle™.  Our goal is to investigate and explore the interaction and intersection of physical and virtual dance.  We are excited to celebrate the future of dance.  We are dancing into the digital future!”

Members of Ballet Pixelle come together from all over the world, Japan, Europe, and North America.  Animations are created by Inarra Saarinen and put into dance phrases.  There are no artificial synchronizing devices and the dancers truly perform dancing with each other and the music.  Each performance is truly live and unique, and takes advantage of the characteristics of Second Life to extend the art of the ballet in new directions.

Great Ways to Spend Passover - Sundown Friday April 22- Sundown Saturday April 30th

Every faith has holidays that are family oriented and so it is with the faith of the Jewish people. Passover is a time of tradition and religious symbolism that is a vital part of the life and faith of a people dating back to approximately 1300 BCE. With over 3300 years of history, you can see just how important it is to bring this Passover history to your family story to continue a faith that is an integral part of your very being. This year, find great ways to spend Passover with your children to emphasize just how important this holiday is to you.

Gather with Friends and Family for the Seder Meal

In today’s world, many of the Jewish faith are not as ‘faithful’ as they once were. It is the same in most world religions and that’s why there is a cry for coming back to the faith of their fathers. Modern Jewish families often celebrate only nominal holidays, with Passover being one of the most important. If you haven’t been raised with strict adherence to kosher foods, a true-to-form Seder dinner would be one of the best things you can do for your children.

This year, Passover begins at sundown Friday, April 22 and ends at sundown on April 30. The first night, the night of the primary Seder meal, is celebrated on that first night. Why not invite as many friends and family members as you can so as to be truly symbolic of that time of passing over to the land of plenty?

Whether you need to investigate Jewish travel so as to only be ‘on the road’ at approved times or are inviting others to your home, make the Seder meal a focal point of your eight day holiday.

Take Time off Work for a Memorable Passover Vacation

When looking for places to go for the Passover holiday, it is always best to talk to a travel agent such as Leisure Time Tours that specialize in Jewish travel. Bearing in mind that certain things can only be done during daylight hours, you will want to find a travel agent who understands common practices in the Jewish faith. Instead of taking your annual vacation in the summertime, why not take eight days off during Passover to visit places that you wouldn’t ordinarily go? Not only can you teach your children about their faith, but you can also get a better appreciation for the faith you were born into.

It is an unfortunate state of affairs in today’s society that so many have fallen away from the traditions of their ancestors. Being a person of faith doesn’t mean you need to live a drab, unexciting lifestyle. This year, find great ways to celebrate Passover with the entire family and get back to a life that you were meant to live. You will find it an enriching experience whether you visit Jerusalem or a local synagogue steeped in ritual. There is no reason not to find ways to spend Passover that are both fun as well as religious in flavor.

GeekSpeak SL: Are we justified in spending money on space? Join the Discussion Saturday, March 19th at 12pm SLT

There are so many unsolved problems on earth.  Should we fix those first before we attempt to go to space?  Or will space exploration save mankind?

Some think that no money or time should be spent on space while there are people in need here.  How much are we going to waste before we realise that Earth is our only home?

Others think that we will gain a lot from going to space.  There are mineral resources out there that we could use and space exploration will encourage an interest in science.  We should spread out into the universe.  Faith in a future for our species on all the planets of the galaxy may be what we need to put things right down here.

If we cancel space programs will other countries take over?  Or private companies?  Maybe we should leave it to them.

Come join the discussion at GeekSpeak in Second Life and tell us which side you take.

Avie Poll: What are your thoughts on the Sansar Project? How will it affect you?- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

The Sansar Project aka SL 2.0 is a new virtual world platform (not launched to the public just yet) with many similarities to the existing Second Life platform. However, the Sansar project claims it will democratize Virtual Reality as a creative medium with a multitude of options, from entertainment and gaming to architecture, education, art, healthcare, business meetings, training, conferences and more.

It is speculated by many this new world will hammer the last nail into the coffin for Second Life as we know it.  Some SL residents are prepared to make the move to the new world while abandoning the old. Many others wonder what will happen to the world we all have come to love and worked hard to preserve. Who will stay and who will go?

We have seen the downfall of one virtual world for another back in 2004, when virtual world gamers from The SIMS Online made their way to Second Life and other virtual worlds. The decline in users for a more advance virtual civilization became apparent when TSO shut down its grid. It is now 2016 and once again advancement in Virtual World Technology has come.

SLE set out to ask avatars across the grid how they feel about SL 2.0 and how it might affect them. It seems many don't think Second Life will come to an end and are hopeful for the future.  It is hard to predict what will become of this current virtual world if a mass exodus occurs, so we can only wait and see.

AVIE POLL RESULTS

POLL:
What are your thoughts on the Sansar Project? How will it affect you? Do you see yourself abandoning SL for this new VR civilization?

Contessa

Coηtєssα Mαrquєz Mirαbєℓℓα  (contessa.marquez), Second Life Resident, RP Community (10 years 4 months; 3789 days)

“Never will abandon this original platform. I will visit the new platform but won't leave from here.”

Do you think Sansar Project will drain SL like it did to TSO?

“Nope, doubt it. Many of us have lots of RL money invested in here”.

Dragon

Dragon (dragonheart.spiritweaver), CEO of Imagine Magazine (6 years 2 months; 2252 days)
“Expensive and competition from so many other types of entertainment make me wonder how it will be supported, but the future is there at some point.  This SL has lost a certain vitality with a stagnant population that is less creative people and with the opening of the teen grid the 'adult' population seems to have left for other interests of which this new tech may draw some”.

Filipa

Filipa Thespian, CEO, Editor-In-Chief, Nu Vibez Magazine (7 years 5 months; 2724 days)

“Well I think Sansar is exciting from the prospect of the improved functions, the quality of graphics, and all the good things we've heard that it is or will be.  If it is all they've been saying, I think it's a lovely opportunity.  I do not see it "replacing" Second Life ... at least not while SL is still making as much money as it does.  I did an article in my last issue of NuVibez about this where I shared the income statements that I do NOT believe LL will abandon.  As long as the finances here are viable, I believe SL will stay.
I do see it though becoming a functional asset for things like business meetings, education and other things that currently SL is not able to do because of the huge "adult" situation and because of the limited functional technology.
I do NOT see abandoning SL until such time as there is no longer a member base here that means anything meaningful for our businesses and I do not see abandoning it completely until such time as (after the masses are gone) my friends I spend time with are gone”.

 see page #38 and 40
Filipa shares important information about SL and The Sansar Project.

Pup

pup Witherspoon,  leisure Second Lifer (9 years 11 months; 3650 days)

“My best guess is that there will be a new VR civilization out there that attracts me, I'm not sure it will be Sansar.  I have real doubts that the Lindens can pull off the best VR environment.  My bet is on Mark Zuckerberg, I'm pretty sure he's up to something with VR.. he didn't hire Cory Linden (Ondrejka) and buy up Oculus Rift just for fun and giggles”.

Andy

Andy (anirban73.simons) Model for AV Top Models (9 years 3 months; 3385 days)

“I wont abandon SL, unless, they allow all my inventory and lindens to be transferred to Sansar, should I like it. SL should continue. Another important thing is, the hardware requirement, graphics shouldn't be such that people have to change or upgrade their PC or laptop”.

Baeric

Baeric Constantine, Second Life Resident (7 years 10 months; 2861 days)
“There are a number of VR realms similar to SL, and though they were and are frequented, they did not reflect the success of Second Life.  For a period, Linden Research ran High Fidelity, and though I looked into this it was not intuitive and learning to move was a chore. How this will reflect on Sansar, I cannot determine, but I am not sure it will supersede the success of Second Life.  As for me leaving Second Life and joining Sansar, I will have to wait... It may require the purchase of better equipment, in which case this will present a problem. If I am able, I will likely venture into it and see if it can be something to move into in the future, but for now, I do not see myself leaving Second Life”.

Rysan

Rysan Fall, Fall Films Machinima Producer (8 years 3 months; 3027 days)
“I probably won’t abandon SL but if it is what it claims to be it is, it will make what I do better”.

JenzZa

JenzZa Misfit, Misfit Dance & Performance Art (9 years 9 months; 3571 days)

“I have no interest in the Sansar Project -- I believe old SL will live on :)  period”.

About St. Patrick's Day- Debby Sharma Reporting...

credit: Google search

Saint Patrick's Day  (Feast of Saint Patrick or the Day of the Festival of Patrick), is a religious festival celebrated on March 17th; on the date of the death of Saint Patrick who was considered to be the foremost patron Saint of Ireland. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.
It is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. St. Patrick’s day is also widely celebrated in the United States, Great Britain, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.
In 17th century, this day was made an official Christian feast day by the Catholic Church. Celebrations include public parades, festivals, and the wearing of green, shamrocks and a whole lot of drinking! The celebration became popular after the Lenten restrictions on eating and consumption of alcohol was lifted.
According to the Declaration, believed to be allegedly written by Patrick, the Saint was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy family.
His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. Spending six years there and working as a shepherd, according to the Declaration that during this time he "found God". And that God told him to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home.
After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity.
During this period, for many centuries many legends grew up around Patrick and he became Ireland’s foremost Saint. These days efforts are made to use the Irish language, especially in Ireland as this week is The week of St. Patrick’s day.
Customarily, on this day, people either wear green clothing or wear shamrocks. St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish pagan.

The colour has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s. It has been associated  when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn on St Patrick's Day since at least the 1680’s.
During the 1790s, green had become associated with Irish nationalism, due to its use by the United Irishmen (was a republican organisation led mostly by Protestants and with many Catholic members  who launched a rebellion in 1798 against British rule). The phrase "wearing of the green" comes from a song of the same name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wearing_of_the_Green), which laments United Irishmen supporters being persecuted for wearing green. Ever since then, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the colour and its association grew in popularity.

The wearing of the 'St Patrick's Day Cross' was also a popular custom in Ireland until the early 20th century. These were a Celtic Christian cross made of paper that was "covered with silk or ribbon of different colours, and a bunch or rosette of green silk in the centre.
The week of Saint Patrick’s day in Second Life is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm. We all love to dress and make our own fashion statement. Designer’s across the grid make outfits and accessories to suit this occasion. Parties and contests are held in various clubs, cafes and other public areas.
