GeekSpeak – Are we custodians of our planet? Join the discussion Sat. Nov. 26th at 12pm SLT

Imagine we were planted here by an alien race who wanted us to look after our planet.  Would we have obligations to the aliens who planted us here?  Would it be a good thing if we thought we were planted here by aliens even if it is not true?  Would we take our duty to the planet more seriously?  Do we have such a duty at all?  If we had to draw up a report for the aliens what would we put in it?

If there is a chance that we were not planted here by aliens should we make a ‘declaration of rights for all living creatures’?  Or a declaration of our duties to the planet itself?  Would that keep us on the job?

Or do you think we can consume everything and hop to the next planet?

Come and discuss these and other out of the world issues at GeekSpeak – thanksgiving edition.

Thanksgiving. What’s the Big Deal? Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

This parody article is back by popular demand,

Thanksgiving is observed in the United States,Canada, Puerto Rico, Liberia and Norfolk Island on the fourth Thursday of November. This year it falls on the 23th day of the month.

The holiday includes a gathering of family and friends for the great feast of the season. Traditionally, tables are laid out like a buffet of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, gravy and all sorts of other family recipes passed down from generations.

Today, the meal is usually followed by some football, snacks and beer. The whole day seems to revolve around food and entertaining house guests or house hoppin’ for pickings.
But really... what is Thanksgiving about?

I sat down with Pilgrim Pete and Chief Roughneck to ask them about this holiday and get both perspective on how it came about.

A Deontological Approach To Gun Control- Join the discussion Sunday November 19th at 1pm SLT

Rhiannon Dragoone, perhaps the most controversial philosophy speaker on the grid, will host the event.  Although she holds a Ph.D., publishes in prestigious philosophy journals, and speaks to record-breaking crowds, she is often forbidden to talk because of the content of her ideas. Her current venue, Eternal Desires, is ranked no. 2 in philosophy traffic.  One Oxford lecturer referred to her lectures as "hardcore" philosophy and she has been called "a light in SL."  Come see for yourself. She will be hosting the event with absolutely no clothes on.

GeekSpeak – The Changing Internet. Join the discussion Sat Nov. 18th at 12pm SLT

The internet is constantly evolving.  What changes do you see coming and how will they affect us?  In the near term 5G technologies will give it hyperspeed.  Things that took several minutes will take only a few seconds.  In the far future are we looking at brain uploads?  Will our minds become part of the internet?

In the next few years how will the addition of 3 billion new people and zillions of devices (the internet of things) change the internet?  Will it become as much a human necessity as oxygen?

We have built a new layer of consciousness for ourselves and a giant wave of change in that layer threatens to engulf us.  Come and join the discussion and see what your future will be.
