GeekSpeak – Is our civilisation the first and only one? Join the discussion April 28th at 12pm SLT

About 60 million years ago the temperature of the earth climbed by several degrees.  It has been suggested that this global warming was caused by industry.  But whose industry?  Intelligent dinosaurs?  Or alien visitors?

Is it possible that there were earlier advanced civilisations, human or non-human, that we do not know about?  A civilisation that lasted 1000 years would be simply a blip on the timeline.  There are some clues that earlier civilisations may have existed, such as an iron hammer embedded in ancient stone or a gold chain found in coal.

What evidence should we look for?  What convincing evidence could there be? Could it be possible that our history is not what we think it is?  Come and tell us what you think in GeekSpeak.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have any ideas for future discussions.

New Mystery Novel Features Virtual World Like SL

Two avatars in a virtual world are main characters in a new mystery novel.

The book, “Femme Fatale Online,” by Eugene Rodgers (SL: “Adolphe Menjou”), has been published as a Kindle ebook. Go to Amazon.com and search for “Femme Fatale Online.” The book can be read on any computer by downloading a free app from Kindle (amazon.com/kindle-dbs/fd/kcp).
The fictional virtual world resembles Second Life. Isaac is an avatar who looks exactly like the man controlling him, Rick, the novel’s hero. He befriends a beautiful, sexy avatar named Joan, but learns nothing about her—neither her identity, whereabouts, nor the facts of her life.Rick is candid about his own identity and life.
Joan gets Rick a real-life job with Molcom, a giant electrical-equipment manufacturer and government contractor in Pittsburgh, where he leads a public-relations campaign for government funding to turn a secret breakthrough into the world’s first nuclear fusion power plant. Shelures the married hero into a virtual romance and uses secretly made tapes of the pretend trysts to blackmail him into industrial espionage. As the story develops, she threatens harm to him and his family.
Rick realizes he must keep his job and continue spying despite vicious office politics or he and his wife will die. Against long odds, he mustfind out who Joan is and where she lives so he can apprehend her before she strikes, knowing she’ll murder him if she realizes what he’s doing. By clever detection, he develops six suspects.
While Joan is tormenting Rick, one of the suspects, a woman in his office, attempts to seduce him in real life. Lonely during the work week because he’s in Pittsburgh while his wife and family are home in Virginia, and susceptible to an affair that would take his mind off Joan’s terrifying threats, he gradually weakens.
The book’s Facebook page (facebook.com/rodgersmystery) includes videos of the two avatars in action, with Second Life standing in for the fictional virtual world in the novel. The page also contains information about the author and more on the book.
“The novel is not about avatars or a virtual world as such,” Rodgers said. “It’s written for a general audience. The avatars are the same as regular characters in any novel, and almost all the action takes place in the real world. My book is basically a mystery but has elements of thrillers, spy novels, and romances.
“There’s no explicit sex and little violence, but the book has risqué parts and some raw language. It would be rated ‘R’ if it were a movie. An Agatha Christie mystery it is not. It’s a modern, nontraditional novel that’s true to life.
“Readers learn what life is like as a resident of Pittsburgh, which is surprisingly pleasant, and as an employee of a major corporation, which is not always pleasant. One character proposes what he calls the 3B’s of business success—backstabbing, butt kissing, and bull throwing.
“The book raises several questions: Do the moral principles that govern sexual activity also apply to virtual sex, which is huge in Second Life and will become widespread when virtual reality takes off, possibly in the next year or two? Is it possible to love two people at the same time, a question that applies to Rick in his relations with an attractive suspect? Can an employee act ethically while trying to survive in the jungle-like realities of corporate life?”
Eugene Rodgers is a retired public relations writer for several large corporations and managed public relations for the Westinghouse R&D Center. He was named Virginia author of the year in 1991 by the Virginia College Store’s Assoc. for his first book, “Beyond the Barrier: The Story of Byrd’s First Expedition to Antarctica.” Grove/Atlantic published his next book, “Flying High: The Story of Boeing and the Rise of the Jetliner Industry.”

Getting the MAX from SL's Live Music Scene: A Spotlight on Maximillion Keene- Sean Lerner Reporting...

I haven't been fully active in my Second Life for the past 6 or 7 years. Coming back into this world, I searched for something familiar to remind me of why I loved it here back then. For me that something familiar was always live music. There is no better way to get re-acclimated to SL's live music scene than catching a Maximillion "Max" Kleene show. He's a veteran performer in SL with the chops to prove it.

I'm sure this isn't the first time someone wrote a review of Max. He was performing in SL back when I was working the scene; and he can still crush it like he did back then. My intention is to write a critique from a fellow musician's point of view. In actuality, this is going to sound more like a fanboy blog post. That's not from a lack of objectivity, but rather from a string of nearly flawless performances.

It would be to easy to simply say Max plays cover songs. Although he doesn't write the songs he performs, he puts together arrangements with amazing artistry and craftsmanship. He performs every tune with such conviction and heart that each song becomes his own.

A song like "Closing Time" by Semisonic is practically standard issue for anyone playing cover songs. Despite the countless times I've heard this song performed in SL clubs and RL bars by every caliber of musician, Max makes it sound like the song was specifically written for him to play. His rendition even includes insights of lyrical analysis without ever missing a beat.

Max also played the Led Zepplin classic "Going to California." He masterfully captures Robert Plant's tenderness while adding his own vocal growl that projects and undeniable emotional connection to the song. The same could be said for his rendition of "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac. I will say that this song forces Max to push into the higher end of his vocal range. Even though I'd like to see his tweak the vocal arrangement just a touch, his guitar arrangement is so well crafted that it is hard to imagine the full band original.

His version of "Elanor Rigby" by the Beatles holds a special form of mastery. The original recording from Revolver was performed by a string quartet. Max has arranged the song for guitar in a way that not only captured the dark lyrics of the original, but also highlights the haunting loneliness through his steady strong strumming.

One more song from his set that I'd like to highlight is the 1961 Audry Hepburn hit "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's (not to be confused by the Deep Blue Something song by the same name that Max also crushed the last time I saw him). The original version of the song feels to me like it was a holdover from the music of the late fifties. This could be due to covers by crooners like Frank Sinatra and jazz artists like Louis Armstrong. Max, on the other hand, has arranged this classic to feel like a contemporary hit. He uses a crooning style of his own without ever trying to oversell it or give it that old timey feel that has come to be expected with this song.

Japanese Ballet: Majikku (Magic)- April 26th at 5pm SLT

In this fantasy ballet, a group of four magicians attempt to re-design their quaintly adorned parlor room.  They struggle to come to a decision and each secretly use their magical abilities to remove the prior one's work and build their own new and fantastical setting. GeekSpeak – the end of cities? Join the discussion April 21st at 12pm SLT

Will the future see people moving out of cities?  If there are self-driving electric cars on call all the time, goods are delivered by drones, schools are available on youtube and you can work in a virtual world why live in a city?  Will you need to be near a hospital if your house robot can be a heart surgeon?  And wouldn’t it be good to escape the pollution?

What do cities have to offer?  It may be that they will be the last refuge of wildlife.  Any number of species are now moving into cities and escaping the farming and hunting regimes of the countryside.  Would the death of cities mean the extinction of species?

Perhaps we would lose something if we never interacted with people at random, if we always chose the people we wanted to talk to.

What will happen to the cities if we all abandon them?  Will they become drone hubs?  Will they be preserved as monuments to the past?

Come to our discussion and tell us where you prefer to live in 15, 30, 50 years.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have any suggestions for future discussion subjects.

GeekSpeak – should we have a ministry of happiness? Join the discussion on Saturday, April 14th at 12pm SLT

Should governments measure their success not by financial growth but by the effect they have on the happiness of a population?  Should we all copy Myanmar and have a ministry of happiness, whose job would be to make everyone as happy as possible?  Should the government send clowns onto the street, to make the children happy?  Should police officers give out free ice cream once in a while in an attempt to change the mindset of angry, ‘no future’ kids?

Even if you do not think there should be a ministry of happiness do you think we should have a different approach to policing and punishment?  Maybe a speeding lottery where all those who don’t speed would be entered into a lottery for the fines of those who do speed?

Or do you think all this sounds too much like Big Brother?  Maybe the next step is to increase the average happiness by providing public suicide booths.

So, should there be a ministry of happiness?  And what should its function be?  Join us today and perhaps we will elect you to lead it.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have any ideas for future discussion subjects.

Sound Quiz Trivia Game Table is taking Trivia Entertainment to a Whole New Level while helping charities- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Sound Quiz trivia Table is the first innovative interactive table game to be introduced to the Second Life community. Created by ENT Media’s Shane Foresight and Kaijah Chrome, Sound Quiz combines the fun of trivia with the use of audio clues and the challenge of players having to beat the clock.  It is a fast paced social game for players of all levels, if you love table games and trivia, then this is the game for you!

It is perfect to have at your club or venue. Sound Quiz will encourage visitors and members to get together and play against others and the table.  Affordable and easy to play, it is a game designed to provide the best in-world table game entertainment. Get ready to laugh and have fun with your friends and family.

The SL Enquirer met up with Shane and Kaijah to learn more about Sound Quiz Game table and how you can be part of owning one and help various charities on the grid.

Interview

Hi Shane and Kaijah, it is a pleasure to talk to you about this exciting new game table. It looks like you and your team put a lot of work into it, what inspired you to create Sound Quiz?

Shane:- Thank you  Lanai, part of the responsibility of the management of The ENT Charitable Fund, is to create ideas on new and innovative products in SL that will provide funding to the Charitable Fund.

The idea first came about as a result of an interest in trivia and having played other text based trivia games in SL.

We wanted to create a new experience, one that would combine the use of audio clues and timers, which would set both a social yet competitive aspect to the game.
We feel what we have achieved has far surpassed our expectations, in as far as, the response in sales and table owner’s feedback.

Kaijah:- As many of you know, Second Life really hadn't seen or experienced new games in many, many years, and, quite frankly, we thought it was time Second Life Residents had something new and interesting to play.
Additionally, we wanted Sound Quiz to be more of a social game that most existing Second Life games.  With the introduction of sound clues and encouraging people to voice during the game, it can be quite entertaining and fun to play!

Not only is it a trivia game but it has sound clips which sets it about from other trivia games in Second Life. Can you tell our readers more about what Sound Quiz Trivia Game Tables does?

Shane:- Sound Quiz is like nothing seen before in SL, it has been designed to be social, bringing people together in a fun and friendly competitive way.

Kaijah:- Sound Quiz game allows for selected categories, like music to be the trivia category.  Once the game begins, players will hear a sound clue which can be anything from movie clips, interesting facts, famous speeches, and of course, songs and music clips.  The HUD provides a question that is related to that sound file with 4 multiple choice answers they can select from to submit their answers.
We incorporated the multiple choices in order to allow any level trivia player a fun and interactive experience, everyone loves being able to have a guess if they don't know the answer.

Is it random music trivia or can you pick specific categories?

Shane:- it is much more than music, we have 3 categories, Music, Movies and General Knowledge, with many different genres and topics involved, there is something for everyone.
Kaijah:- Players can select specific topics they want to play and the number of total questions per game.  For a quick game, one game of 20 questions would be selected.  Each category consists of a 20 question set and can be individually selected by interests of those playing.

What other features does it have?

Shane:- The game comes with a number of features, you can load as many packs as you like, with an automated loader system, it makes loading fresh packs easy.
The selection of categories provides 2 options, you can select up to 3 categories (60 questions) across any of the 3 categories or you can have the table select them for you randomly.
The table has a HUD which you receive when you sit at the table, this is where players will see the question and the 4 multiple choice answers, as well as the submit button and the timer.

Kaijah:- While testing the original Sound Quiz game we found that a majority of people loved playing with voice on.  Soon, people were singing, laughing and talking that it made us realize we needed to put in a warning timer.  There is a count down timer that let's players know when the next sound clue will play and to quiet down so the clue will be heard!  Talk about an interactive and boisterous game!

How many players can join in a game at once?

Kaijah:- The table will accommodate any number of players up to a total of 8.  Players are free to join or leave anytime during game play without affecting any of the other players.

Can SL residents contribute to adding more questions into the game table or does it have add-on expansion packs?

Shane:- currently we have over 1000 questions or over 40 packs with more produced and released regularly.

Kaijah:- In addition to our standard add-on packs, we offer a customized pack specific to a group or sim that is personalized to include questions about individuals, the role play if there is any, and the sim.  After all, we all know Bella always eats chips when on voice!  Really?

Do you have tournaments and events for Sound Quiz at ENT media? If so, what group can they join for events?

Kaijah:- As a kick off event, we did have a Grand Tournament with a prize of 10,000L.  Over 48 people signed up to play elimination rounds over a 2 week period which resulted in a Grand Final play off of 8 people.  It was quite an exciting final round!
On an on-going basis, we sponsor events and tournaments at club and games venues as a way to spread the word about Sound Quiz to residents.

Can you tell our readers about the Sound Quiz rewards program?

Shane:- As a feature of the game we have provided the ability for owners to load the table with a gift or prize, this delivers a prize to the winner.

Clubs and owners are finding different ways to make use of this, some are providing vouchers, others are introducing sponsors items, such as clothes etc.
The feedback from clubs has been positive with many telling us that interest in the table and the club has increased since using this feature.
We provide a DIY box which owners can place items and other elements in, which can then be uploaded to the table via an upload feature in the table.

I heard proceeds from the game table sales help out various charities in Second Life? Which charities does it help and how much have you raised so far?

Shane:- We are very passionate about The ENT Charitable Fund and the recent success of the fund in raising money for charities in SL which make a difference in real life.
As a result of the sale of Sound Quiz, we have raised over 130,000 lindens of which we are proud to say 80,000 lindens has been donated to two charities, as part of our distribution model.

The two charities received 40,000 lindens each, the worthy recipients were the Feed a Smile and Homes for our troops.

Kaijah:- We felt it was important to have transparency with the ENT Charitable Fund. We formed a Board of Directors, which meets quarterly, who bring nominee charities to the table for consideration.  We do our best to contribute to those we feel we can impact positively with our donations.

Our website supports our transparency with information on charities that we contribute to and the money donated.

Where can table game enthusiasts get Sound Quiz?

Kaijah:- The game, available in Beach theme, Bright theme, Gothic theme, and Steampunk theme can be purchased from the Sound Quiz marketplace store.  Add-on packs and reward gifts are available there as well.

We also have a table out at the Sound Quiz Game sim where we encourage people to come over, play the game, and experience it on a personal level.  The tables are also for sale there.  Come on over and play a game!  You'll fall in love with Sound Quiz!

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Shane:- Sound Quiz and the ENT Charitable Fund are ways residents in SL can make a contribution to those less fortunate and by promoting the ENT Charitable Fund and the products we release to raise funds, we are doing our bit in allowing others to share in the gift of giving.

We would ask everyone reading this article, to take a few minutes to check out the ENT Charitable Fund and the Sound Quiz Trivia Game and to pass on details to their friends.
The smallest gesture or action can make a big difference in the lives of others.

Additional Information:
To see and play it in world at the ENT SL Radio HUB:
Sound Quiz Trivia Table Game is officially released and for sale on MP!
Proceeds from the sale of the Sound Quiz game goes directly to the ENT Charitable Fund, which donates funds to various charities each year!

GeekSpeak – Space Debris- Join the discussion April 7th at 12pm SLT

Were you ever hit by a piece of trash with a 22000km/hour velocity?  If you are reading this then probably not.  Lucky you!  But it is the greatest fear of everyone on the space station.  For a long time we have been throwing rubbish into space, like irresponsible drivers throwing rubbish out of their windows.  Now space debris has become a serious problem and a problem that is getting bigger all the time.

Larger pieces of space debris (over 1cm counts as large) are monitored and sometimes the ISS moves to avoid collisions.  But it is time we cleaned space up.  If we don't it could mean that we can never grow into a space faring species.

A prize has been offered for ideas on how to do it and there are a few efforts underway.  Will it be enough and in time?  And who is responsible for sweeping up rubbish in space?

Bring your lightspeed broom and join us in GeekSpeak to talk about it.

Please IM Vulcan Viper if you have any ideas for future discussions.
