An in depth interview with Nikolas Actor - Dean Lawson reporting

Onlinker.com is a social network website created by Second Life resident Nikolas Actor for other Second Life residents. I had the good fortune to speak with Nikolas about this new project.

Dean Lawson : Could you describe what onlinker.com is?

Nikolas Actor : OnLinker.com is a social network for second life’s users. It is unbelievably flexible and easy to use. With OnLinker.com you can advertise your products, create groups, organize events, write blogs and so much more…

Dean Lawson : What was your inspiration for Onlinker.com?

Nikolas Actor : Good question, i find a lot of difficulties trying to get in touch with my friends, when i'm using someone else's laptop, more over when you make an account in facebook for your second life account, it only takes one single report to lose your facebook account ... so i had this idea of making a social network ... it helps also the seller ... they can stay in touch with their customers they can check their messages easily and offer support them support … and of course there is a "Newsfeed"which allow anyone to publish photo/video/status or whatever, and it goes live everyone using onlinker can see it … so it makes it easier for advertising and other things.

Dean Lawson : Before inviting me to your office you sent me a message stating you wanted to verify my account for OnLinker.com Is this a standard practice?

Nikolas Actor : It's our policy, we are trying to keep everyone using their own avatar's name … because someone may use someone else name and cause him/her problem here in world ... so people with the tag "Verified" are using their own names to keep things safe

Dean Lawson : If people do not verify their identity with you are their accounts deleted?

Nikolas Actor : Yes, after a certain time … we have a good team, always someone is online, however if none is online users can leave a message saying that they are the owners of the account in our website

Dean Lawson : On your profile it says you have been a Second Life Resident for 7 years 8 months. Is this the first time you've created this type of project?

Nikolas Actor : Yes this is the first time, i'm just back to sl a month ago and i started OnLinker.com … there will be more one or two more project related to it soon …  I'm working on some Networked Adboards which will be controlled from a single server and the ads can be showed in several adboards around the second life grid the adboards locations will be displayed on OnLinker.com as well

Dean Lawson : If someone wanted to join your team how would they do this? Is this a paid position or volunteer?

Nikolas Actor : For now there is only volunteer positions, because we are a free social network we don't ask users to pay to use our services, however in the future the team will paid for sure

Dean Lawson : Onlinker.com is currently holding a logo contest, did you want to explain what this is for our readers?

Nikolas Actor: Sure … in our community everything is done, by the vote of users … so right now the contest, which was an idea of our sponsors ... we are asking people to make a Logo for OnLinker.com and the winning logo will be set as the official one and the winner get L$10,000 donated by our sponsors

THEFT AND FRAUD IN SECOND LIFE-Scripts that Steal - Dean Lawson Reporting

Have you ever rezzed an object and received the message “Object wants access to take money from your Linden Dollar account. If you allow, this it can take any or all of your money from you at any time with no further warning or request.”?

The obvious response would be to deny this request but Second Life isn’t always a place where logic prevails and, for new users who learn to navigate through this virtual world by clicking to see what happens, it leaves one wondering why Linden Labs would permit Second Life vendors to use such a shady script.

When I asked about this script on the Firestorm English Support chat line I received the following responses;

Robo™ (robert0.siamendes): dean, you can find that script in the LSL wiki site

Gena

Gena S. Wilberg (genafosters): (FS64 4.7.7v os) it is a standard script Dean used by every vender I think outside of MP or at least very popular

When I asked about this script in the Builder’s Brewery chat line I received the following responses.

Pavl

Pavl Duke: sadly any script you give permission_debit to can indeed continue to take your money while the object is rezzed

Erin

Erin Rose (nonspecific): There are also bogus "gift cards" that do the same thing

Vince

Vιɳƈҽ ™ (vincestriker): Once a script has the PERMISSION_DEBIT permission it can empty an account of L$.
Fraud & theft are both LL Terms of Service violations and crimes. Misuse this function and you risk being banned and legal action. In addition LL may freeze the accounts of anyone the money is transferred to and restore it to its rightful owners. This may involve retrieving it from third party exchanges and accounts on those exchanges being frozen. The system is not designed to be friendly towards fraud.

It was also recommended by members of Builder’s Brewery that I review the following links.

In addition to the previous chat line responses, I was also contacted for private conversations with SL Residents who had negative experiences with the script.

Whispr

Whispr εжз (whispr.xue): Hi Dean... I did just get this script when I bought some ice skates off of Abranimations website... it was attached to a affiliate vendor rezzing

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Did you lose lindens as a result of this script?

Whispr εжз (whispr.xue): no... I didn't rez the vendor... I had clicked to "add all" that was in the folder. It was in both the free skates:  https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Super-Ice-Skates-Lite-Version-Xmas-2014/7229349 and the pay version:  https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Super-Ice-Skates-Full-Version/6639169

When I asked if this incident was reported to linden labs I received the following response.

Whispr εжз (whispr.xue): Not yet, I am waiting to hear back from Abranimations regarding it. I know Abranimations is a reputable vendor, and that they would not put any such scripting in. If Abranimations did not put it into their affiliate Vendor... then it is likely there was a dormant script put in by whoever created the vendors, or somehow it was hijacked

When I asked Firestorm Support if it was possible that the script might be placed in an object without the vendor’s knowledge I received this reply;

Robo

Robo™ (robert0.siamendes): dean, this script has been in existence for a long time... idk how the script can be embedded in the object unless the creator foolishly did the wrong permission for that object... Also there have been in the past where scammers placed an invisible object in front of the legit objects with that script in it

SL Resident tom45434 added this to the conversation;

Tom

tom45434: I have firsthand experience with those types of malicious scripts

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Did you lose lindens as a result of this experience?

tom45434: it’s been happening very often everywhere in SL from stores/shops/gacha places breedables everywhere....yes I did, but not as a bad as some of my other friends

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): How many lindens did you lose?

tom45434: about 5000. My friends lost nearly 200k together

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Did you or your friends report this to linden labs?

tom45434: yes instantly, and then they got the linden back within a few hours

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Do you know if linden labs is doing anything to track down the creator of this script?

tom45434: yes they are, but it seems rather impossible as it’s a new avatar each time it’s done I counted about 400 different alts so far each getting banned rather quickly, also the script itself is a rather easy script to make and a lot of people could make it within 15-20 minutes

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Would it be futile to publish the name of the creator of this script to try and warn other SL Residents?

tom45434: yes as the creators of the script only last in second life for a matter of hours or sometimes 10 hours at max

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): If the creator of the script has their account deleted, where does the money go when it is extracted from someone's account?

tom45434: the money is frozen in the database till linden labs investigates where it all came from then it’s returned to the rightful owners
Dean

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): It doesn't seem like a very lucrative scam for the creator of this script, why do they create new accounts?

tom45434: they create new accounts to get past the bans that people do when they are found out, most people when the money is stolen from them don't report it so this is how they get the money and sometimes it’s never investigated till someone does report it. Also, they target any place that has products like "gift cards" and things that actually do require debit permissions and they copy the exact product down to the script name. But the only true way to prevent this type of malicious scripts is to "ALWAYS" check the creator of the object ""BEFORE"" clicking accept on the debit permissions it will not take the money till its accepted, some objects require debit permissions in order to work, but always verify the creator is the true creator first, even if it does look exactly like a true product

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): Is it possible that the creator of this script uses an account that is paid by the alt accounts that are being used to create the script? In other words, I create account 1 then I create account 2 and use account 2 to perform this scam until I get caught, while transferring the stolen lindens to account 1 which I use to convert lindens into real dollars. Do you think this might be the manner by which the creator of the script extracts money from SL, if so, what can Linden Labs do to track down this person?

tom45434: yes its possible they are doing this im pretty sure they are using this tactic right now, but the way linden lab prevents this issue is there’s a 3 day delay on Linden$ to real life money but in order for them to prevent this from happening always, check the creator first before accepting debit permissions, and if it does happen by accident then file a abuse report ASAP under Help/Report Abuse/ Select category "Fraud > L$ Or USD$ and remember to put the name of that creator of that malicious script into the "Abuser name:" and give as much details as possible. If it can be caught (Abuse Report Filed) before the 3 days are up then it can be reversed. Linden labs can track it down through all of the Alt accounts they send it to

Dean Lawson (deanlawson): thanks for answering my questions Tom, is there anything else you would like the readers of this article to know regarding this issue?

tom45434: yes one more thing to state, this is for large companies here in SL, if these scammers want to target those companies they will create a chain of these scams to steal the linden then they "Gift" those funds that were stolen to that main business account of the company that they are targeting, when someone reports the stolen linden along the way all accounts get put on Admin Hold including that innocent business account simply because that scammer didn't like them, the best thing for these business owners to do if they receive a Error logging in "Your Account has been put on Admin hold" Call Linden Labs ASAP and also log into a Alt of theirs and file a Abuse Report to Appeal this Admin Hold as they had nothing to do with it

When I asked Firestorm Support how to report such an incident I received this reply;

Jeanie

Jeanie Jupiter: (FS 4.7.7f) Help>Report abuse...  include the transaction details https://accounts.secondlife.com/transaction_history/?lang=en-US

While it seems to be common sense to refuse access to any script that seems untrustworthy it might also be prudent for Linden Labs to show more than just a “buyer beware” attitude and to crack down on fraudulent scripts and SL Residents who use the virtual world to grift a living. Allowing untrustworthy scripts to victimize Second Life shoppers might discourage commerce and trade, just as street criminals can discourage tourism. As someone who is relatively new to Second Life there is a lot about scripts and the business of Linden transactions that I may have overlooked, so I encourage anyone who reads this article to share their opinion and experiences on this subject by leaving your comments or contacting me directly.

EXISTENCE IN BALANCE: An in depth interview with Second Life Artist JenniferMay Carlucci- Dean Lawson Reporting...

According to her press release ; "JenniferMay Carlucci is inspired by the creation of our earth and the offering of our beautiful planet into the physical Universe. 'Existence in Balance' shows Earth being created and how we humans are part of this loving process. With nothing more than this intriguing concept she starts to explore and build up her vision. Building a visual route up along a growing Planet Earth, Jenn will drag you into a breathtaking experience.

Experience by means of motion (dance), visualization (decor), sound (special compositions of music), feelings (use of particles) - beauty and purity. The ground level of the sim is used to create an environment from the moment that earth is created. Earth in its early state, moving towards growth, awareness of existence, and completion for life to exist on. From the moment on when life is eminent, Earth is situated within the known Universe, our Universe. Gloriously balanced between stars, planets, galaxies as we know it. Feeling this theme can speak to so many, she connects with many talented residents, offering them a platform to share their ideas and feelings about “Existence in Balance”, encouraging them to travel alongside with her on this extraordinary and amazing voyage. 'Existence in Balance' is offering the visitors a serene environment where they will be submerged in a breathtaking trip around the sim.”

Much like the press release, the LEA installation "Existence in Balance” is a flood of ideas that are unconventional and Avant Guard. I had the good fortune to chat with Jennifer May Carlucci, the artist behind the design and concept, as well as Falkon Wickentower, who helped with scripts and other technical aspects of this project.
Dean : Hi Jennifer, hi Falkon, thanks for inviting me … Would you like to begin by telling me about your installation? What inspired you to create?
Jennifer : I had an idea to create a virtual world about how earth was created already many years ago … just to let people see where we originate from … to show the beauty … It is the idea of our souls being created in the non physical world, where earth is created as well … I want to offer a visual experience of the whole process … so when this is done people will be able to travel around here … go through a wormhole into the existing world … and  from there into Universe
Falk : dont forget the musical side on the experience of the sim.
Jennifer : Also I made this compilation of the music you hear now especially for this project … at the opening we will have a big show with a combination of dance, particles and music about this subject … the music will tell the tale of creation.

Dean : I see two hands holding a globe, is this a representation of God?
Jennifer : no … it is the creation of earth … this symbolises the non physical world … I do not wish to give this a religious feel … the hands are molding earth and finally releasing the world ready to be into the physical universe
Falk : earth being shaped
Jennifer : here the visitor will start his voyage … here it is all pure and serene … my way of showing this is the cold and icey underwaterworld … the hearts here below represent love … there are 4 directions … reality, fantasy, spiritualism, and emotion … this level is called truth … as we are standing here and we each see and choose our own direction
Dean Lawson : Is truth a link between the four directions?
Jennifer : exactly … as you see there are 4 platforms shaped from hearts … they are below us … those are the directions

Dean : So truth is where the visitor to your sim begins and then they choose the path of reality, fantasy, emotion and spiritualism?
Jennifer : yes .. they come in in a small area where some information is available ... from there they come here and then they can choose a path … that will be a tour ... they just sit on a pose ball and fly around ... from the direction they choose ... first a little in this area ... then they go thru a wormhole, leaving the nonphysical world ... thats a special scripted trick ... the wormhole is a long tube with several effects and textures … depending on the direction they choose … at the end they land in the physical world … in the direction they chose ... what they will see are floating islands with themes on that subject … these floating islands are located around a large floating island this will be the centre stage.

Dean : Could Falk elaborate on some of the scripting required in constructing the tour?
Falk :  sure ... the Tour is build with a scripting language embedded inside a system that ... provides poseballs ... the program lets us use animations … TP's … Poses ... information blocks … sounds ... and spoken texts ... the tour can be started by 1 or many together …  I would like to point out that this build is so serene that by example, new visitors like the lady Mycky that just about 15 minutes ago arrived here, isn't even flying around , but nicely relaxing in the reception chairs....
According to Jennifer the installation will be officially opened in the beginning of April, 2017. A MODICUM OF COLOR: An in depth interview with SL Artist Ilyra Chardin - Dean Lawson Reporting

Ilyra Chardin is a real life and Second Life artist. In a previous interview I had a chance to discuss Ilyra's Second Life images, this time Ilyra treated me to a tour of her art installation “A Modicum of Color”.

Dean : Hi, thanks for taking the time to meet with me, is the name “A Modicum of Color” intended to be ironic?

Ilyra : Well, no.  there are tiny bits of color here and there … like the flowers over by the barn ... or the red or blue sailboats ... tiny bits of color here and there.  that was the intention

Dean : We both seem to be dressed for this installation, with grey clothes ... Did you build the objects in the installation or did you modify objects to reduce the color?

Ilyra : A little of both.  i uploaded tons of new textures.  and i also built some things from scratch.  I didn't do any mesh for this installation, but I am currently working on brand new - original - and I hope unique - meshes for the next installation, which is planned for sometime in March.

Dean : What inspired you to create an installation that is primarily black and white?

Ilyra : The primary reason was to create a 3 dimensional environment that highlighted pockets of color.  I thought a predominately black, white and grey build would create a dreamlike environment.  I also thought it would be soothing ... I thought, too, that anyone coming to pose here would stand out - their av and their clothing - if they wore colorful clothes

Dean : You mentioned that there was a problem with the color of the sky as seen through your viewer, for people to get the best effect of your installation is there a windlight setting they should choose incase it doesn't automatically adjust when they arrive at the installation?

Ilyra : Phototools B/W Light 02 … let me show the garden of flowers that i had mentioned … this was one of the first things that I envisioned and built - the flowers with parts of color.  I later made the flowerr painters and had them painting sections of the flowers.

Dean : It's very nice, why didn't you give color to all the flowers?

Ilyra : i really wanted to show the transition from greyscale to a colorful world ... and really highlight it by coloring just pieces of the flowers

Dean : What’s next on our tour?

Ilyra : This is Art in the Park - a gallery with other artists - some of my work - that is in theme - in tandem with A Modicum of Color … Sandi is a close friend ... she shot that on the sim as I was building it.

To find out more about Art in the Park or Ilyra Chardin you can visit her blog or visit the art installation “A Modicum Of Color"

VIKING VUE: An In Depth Interview with Second Life Artist Sapphire Viking - Dean Lawson Reporting

Sapphire Viking is an artist whose whimsical work celebrates the raw nature of mutable female emotions. Sometimes fantastical, other times dark.  Her paintings and drawings reflects personal experiences expressed through metaphors of color and femininity. I had the good fortune to interview Sapphire and talk to her about her work.

Dean : How did you first learn about Second Life and what appeals to you about living in the virtual universe?

Sapphire : I was traveling and read an article about Second Life in the in-flight magazine.  That was 10 years ago and I don't remember where I was going.  But I am glad that I remembered to go home and check out this new virtual world. The most appealing thing to me about SL is the wealth of imagination, the totally uninhibited creativity.  It is ever changing with magical surprises. I am thrilled to meet people from all over the world and see how similar we human beings are.  I love that I can go sailing in the morning, fly home in a helicopter,  work on my own art gallery,  then go dancing at 5 clubs in the same night.  I guess you could say SL appeals to my restless nature and need to explore.

Dean : A lot of your work seems to feature female forms. Does all of your work revolve around representing the female form? If so, why?

Sapphire : Much of my work is autobiographical. The females represent different events in my life or an emotional state I am trying to express.  As I was growing up, I had a difficult time verbalizing my emotions because I did not feel safe to do so.  I found sanity by getting those feelings out through visual art.  On a pragmatic level, I find the female form to have many more options for expression and use of color.

Dean : The painting "Non Sine Soleiris" reminds me of the movie "Il Casanova" by Frederico Fellini, while "CRAWLING" reminds me of Japanese Anime. Could you tell me about your artistic influences?

Sapphire : My father was an artist and my mother always made sure I had supplies. I would go to my father's studio while he worked.  I remember the smell of musty old wood and oil paint.  He would sit me down with pens and paper or clay and tools and let me go to town.  When we were at his studio it was a peaceful, happy time and I still have that feeling when I work today.  The other artists who have influenced me are many.  I admire line work so some of the early influences were; Aubrey Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha, Egon Schiele, George Grosz and the artists of Mad Magazine. I also read about the women of the surrealist movement so for me Remedios Varo, Leonor Fini & Leonora Carrington.  Frida Kahlo, her vibrant colors and the way she opened herself up so fearlessly was a big influence.  Margaret Keene, when I was a little girl I was delighted to buy small cardboard prints of her paintings at the local drug store!  I do enjoy the art of anime and am also a fan of artists Takashi Murikami and Yoshitomo Nara.  Growing up in Los Angeles I was influenced by films and enjoyed watching the old classics.  I was fascinated by the elegant yet strong women portrayed in films, stars like Betty Davis, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell. I also find new artists that I enjoy on Instagram.   These days my favorite Instagram artist is a woman named Grace Passerottti.  In SL I love the work of Cica Ghost and can't wait for her newest installation. The way she uses the SL environment to express emotion is profound.

Dean : The painting "The Gift" portrays a woman tied up in a ribbon, from her expression she doesn't seem too thrilled about it. The painting "The Bow" portrays a woman gagged by a bow, what are your views on bondage, and sado masochistic relationships? Do you explore this lifestyle in real life or Second Life or both?

Sapphire : When I was a child my house was filled with art history books.  I remember being fascinated with the Hieronymus Bosch masterpiece the Garden of Earthly Delights. Particularly the depiction of hell.  The drama and dynamics were thrilling to me. When I was a teen I was into punk rock and that was my first real life introduction to BDSM but I was too young to understand what it was. After my first serious relationship broke up, I felt it was due to the constant power struggle that is the demise of many "vanilla" relationships.  I already had an unexplored interest in BDSM and as I tend to do, jumped in feet first.  It changed my life.  While the physical side, the whips and chains are dramatic and look good in movies they are external. In my opinion, the basis of BDSM is a method of communication and understanding of roles. My RL experiences were another form of self-exploration and inspired many of the paintings that I display in my SL gallery.  I have been active in the Los Angeles BDSM scene on and off for about 15 years.  During that time, even though I am naturally dominant, I was trained as both a Domme and a sub.  Neither role is greater or less than and can not exist without the other. In SL I have been active in the Femdom scene for about 9 years.  My RL experience helps me when I meet those who come to the Femdom simply out of curiosity or a life long desire. Because of my RL experience in both roles, I have a good understanding of the dynamics and the big picture.

Dean: Is there anything you would like our readers to know about you or your work?

One day I was perving profiles and someone wrote in theirs, "Second Life is my art".  That really struck me and I started looking at SL differently.  I wanted to make it part of my art too. I felt that the colorful world of SL was a good fit for my aesthetic. I have been taking classes at Builder's Brewery in hopes of expanding my horizons within the SL environment. As I mentioned, I am inspired by the in-world installations of Cica Ghost as well as others that I have visited.  I would eventually like to create some type of installation.  I don't know how long it will take or what it will be exactly, but it is something I am formulating in the back of my mind. Thank you Dean, for your thoughtful questions and this opportunity to reach out to the Second Life community.

OD DESIGNS -An in depth interview with Ortho Vargas - Dean Lawson reporting

Rocking in the virtual world

Are you looking for rock and roll or any contemporary musical instruments or paraphernalia? With a wide range of instruments and stage accessories there’s a good chance that OD Designs has what you’re looking for. I had a chance to discuss the inspiration behind the craftsmanship of OD Designs with owner Ortho Vargas.

Dean : Could you tell me about the origins of OD Designs?

Ortho Vargas : Almost 11 years ago I came to SL on the recommendation of a hacker friend of mine to "check out the VR".  I poked around off and on for a few months, then discovered that it was possible to build and script objects.  I built a guitar just to see if I could.  I still have that first model, its pretty rough :)   I get it out once in a while for a chuckle.  RL I am a programmer, craftsman, and musician.  Building musical instruments in SL was a natural melding of everything I enjoyed.  Its been a great ride so far.

Dean :  I visited the store and saw that some of the instruments are very realistic. Does your store sell RL brands and models such as Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster guitars?

Ortho Vargas : OD has endorsements from RL companies to reproduce a copy of their guitars to name .... BC Rich guitars, Dean Guitars, Turner Guitars, Washburn Guitars, Schecter Guitars & Basses, Traben Basses,  Breedlove Guitars

Dean : Do the instruments come with animations? If so could you elaborate on the different type of animations?

Ortho Vargas : All instruments come with a hud so you can play then straight from the box so to speak.  OD also has 3 'add-on' guitar huds with a lot more animations than the standard (approx 70+ mocap animations) hud to allow for a more professional look when playing.  Also OD has a vocal hud which again has 50+ Mocap animations to mix and match for that professional singing look.

Dean : What is the extent of the inventory at OD Designs?

Ortho Vargas : OD produces a range of instruments, mainly guitars ranging from your hard rock electrics to the more classical acoustics with a few 'specials thrown in to keep things exciting'.  Other products include horns, keyboards, and many more.  OD also has the only harmonica driven by hud animations in SL.

OD has no less than 11 different D4 fully mesh Drum Sets one of which is the special 'cow bell' for those moments when you just need a bit extra cow.

At the back of the store is a full stage set up so people can view the optional extras for stage equipment, Lights, Pyro's, Lasers (not just for Dr Evil) along with a Particle Lab that allows people to create their own added effects.  Plus some speakers of which there are exploding ones

Dean :  Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about OD Designs?

Ortho Vargas : OD has 3 stage area's so we can hold full festival set ups if needed along with allowing people to come play whether they are just starting out or a fully established group.  There is a LIVE stage area where we invite live artists to sing or play instruments.

For every new release we have a party (in 2 time zones) which allows people to view and get the new release at a discount along with the possibility of actually winning one.

There is a monthly 'OD ROCKER' or 'OD ROCKER BABE' who if they are lucky enough to be chosen they get some gifts, a page on the OD calendar and invited to select events around SL.
