2020 Out Shop Cancer Now Open

October 1 to October 31, 2020

An American Cancer Society in SL Strides Campaign Fundraising Event

It is time to grab your L$ and start shopping for a cause! The 3rd annual Out Shop Cancer event returns to Second Life featuring more merchants and more ways for residents to support Making Strides and the American Cancer Society.

Since 2018, Out Shop Cancer has been a grid-wide shopping event that brought residents to participating merchant stores. Merchants designate specific items that will be sold as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer programs and services. Each year has seen an increase in the number of merchants and designers joining the fight against breast cancer.

Continuing for the 2020 season is Out Shop Cancer: Marketplace. This allows designers without in-world locations to take part as well!

And brand new for this year we have partnered with the Heathens Court Event, which includes more than 20 additional shopping opportunities to support Making Strides all in one location.
But there’s still more! Also for the 2020 Out Shop Cancer event we have the Wythburn Art Walk with over 20 participating artists, hosted by Sethos Wythburn of Wythburn Fine Furniture. Residents are invited to stroll or ride the paths from the village that lead up to the Raven Craig Art Center. The path is lined with art for sale.

Additionally, there have been special items donated to be raffled during the month. These include two Mega Shopping Spree Raffles each valued over L$15,000, a girl animesh baby and a boy animesh baby from Suki Baby, a custom 1968 Nova from Taz’s Customs, a 2019 Demon SRT from Bad Bunny’s Customs and more.

A full Store directory including some Marketplace specials, full details about the Wythburn Art Walk and other highlights are available at outshopcancersecondlife.com or you can pick up a notecard listing in-world of participating locations and to check out the current raffles at the Out Shop Cancer office here,  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Calabria/103/194/21.

Fight Breast Cancer with Strides Campaigns

It’s almost October - have you considered fighting breast cancer through your Second Life? The American Cancer Society is the global leader in the fight against all cancers, including breast cancer; and new fundraising tools are now available for anyone and everyone to show their support.

Fundraising tools are free and can be found on the Second Life Marketplace or by going to the Strides office on the American Cancer Society island.

The Strides Campaigns season is filling up with activities in several communities across the grid, but there can never be too many ways to fight breast cancer until we find the cure! Donations help fund initiatives including the Reach To Recovery program, a peer to peer program that matches trained breast cancer survivors with those recently diagnosed; raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and screenings; and funding research for better treatments and earlier diagnosis.

Therefore, we’re inviting as many communities across Second Life to take action now!

If you would like to plan your own breast cancer fundraiser, you’re encouraged to work within your community or group in Second Life to organize your own Strides Campaign. Make sure to let the American Cancer Society know about it by completing the ACS Calendar Event Submission Form so we can share it with others.

All Strides Campaigns must use the official Strides fundraising tools that are provided by the American Cancer Society. Fundraising campaigns may include events, hunts, shows, sales, or simply putting out a donation kiosk at your club or store throughout the month of October.

If you want to fight breast cancer, but aren’t able to organize your own campaign, you can get involved with existing campaigns listed in the ACS in SL Events Calendar

SL CHRISTMAS EXPO TEAMS UP WITH LINDEN LAB TO HELP THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY PROVIDE VR HEADSETS TO PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENTS

The American Cancer Society and SL Christmas Expo announced today that all donations to the “Believe in The Magic of Christmas”, the 9th Annual Christmas Expo, in support of the Expo’s mission to Fight Childhood Cancer, will be dedicated to help provide funding for VR Headsets for childhood cancer patients. Along with Linden Lab, their partner in the fight against cancer, and our sponsors and participants, the Expo will be working to reach the Goal of $20,000 to help fund the Society’s VR Headset program for pediatric patients undergoing cancer treatment.
WHY VR?
The American Cancer Society and Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA) have partnered to provide virtual reality (VR) headsets for pediatric cancer patients to use while undergoing various cancer treatments within the hospital.
  • For over 100 years, the American Cancer Society has provided patient services to improve the lives of cancer patients. The virtual reality pediatric program uses innovative technology to further expand the services offered to pediatric cancer patients in an extremely impactful and relevant way.
  • Research suggests that ideal distraction tasks consume some portion of attentional resources so that less cognitive capacity remains available for processing pain.
  • Distraction is a pain management technique that has been shown to successfully reduce pain and behavioral distress in children during invasive medical procedures. VR distraction is a promising intervention for children undergoing painful medical procedures and is an ideal distractor for procedure-related pain because it competes for attention resources in multiple sensory domains and provides visual and auditory sensory blocking of external stimuli...
  • 19 studies across nearly 1,000 articles have explored the effects of VR interventions with cancer patients. These studies found:
    • VR improved patients’ emotional well-being
    • A reduction in patients’ distress in terms of cancer-related psychological symptoms.
    • A significant decrease in anxiety, distress, and fatigue immediately after chemotherapy sessions with VR

With more than 100 Merchants, Raffles, Breedables & One Of A Kind Auctions, Gotchas Hunts and Entertainment, games, contests and fun, the 10 day Expo, which runs from Dec 5ththrough 15th, is the Premier Holiday Experience in Second Life.  This year’s Expo will also feature the reveal of the long awaited 4th Edition Linden Homes and special content provided by our partner, Linden Lab. The Lights of Hope House Decorating Contest will also return for a 2nd year. The Expo will conclude with the 11th Annual Holidays of Hope Ball.

Do not miss out on Believe in The Magic of Christmas, the 2019 Second Life Christmas Expo, December 5th through the 15th, in support of the American Cancer Society.

American Cancer Society's New Way of Fighting Breast Cancer in Second Life

The American Cancer Society’s New “DIY Campaign” Model will Simplify Breast Cancer Fundraising in Second Life

The American Cancer Society in Second Life is known for always adapting to the changing needs in our virtual world. The latest evolution will change how we fight breast cancer in the Second Life.

After several conversations with multiple volunteers and considering many options, the ACS leadership team is excited to announce a new “DIY campaign”  model that will offer opportunities for new and existing volunteers to support the ACS’s breast cancer mission by creating their own campaigns.

The new model allows anyone to plan their own campaign, using existing American Cancer Society fundraising tools that are designated to fight breast cancer during the month of October. This is a great way for volunteers and advocates to think BIG! Within Second Life, there can be a multitude of major campaigns overlapping each other throughout the month of October, creating a movement across the grid where we attack breast cancer from every angle.

“Established events like Out Shop Cancer and the Making Strides Walk will continue and are examples of the types of fundraising campaigns that we hope to see more of, from various segments of the larger virtual universe,” says Stingray Raymaker, Sr. Consultant of Virtual Community Development. “We want every community in Second Life to feel like they can organize and lead their own campaign.”

Questions about Strides Campaigns or the American Cancer Society in Second Life can be directed to MamaP Alter, Trager Alter, or Nikki Mathieson.
