SL Newser: "Jamm for Genes" Raises Over 300,000 Lindens

Last weekend, the "Jamm for Genes" event raised over 300,000 Lindens. From 10PM Thursday (Aug 2) to close to Midnight on Sunday evening (Aug 5), live musicians performed for the Australian charity at three different clubs, one at a time. On late Thursday, "Lacy's Place" in the Sasha sim started the action. Just as the events there began to wind down 22 hours later, at 8PM the musicians at "The Pocket" at Cassandra began playing.

SL Newser:London City to celebrate 2012 Olympics- Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

Image retrieved from SL Newser
One of the more popular places in Second Life is London City area, which offers a number of events. And when the real London has a celebration, it's often reflected here, such as the Queen's Jubilee earlier in the year.

On Friday July 27, the 2012 Summer Olympics begin in the real life London. In London City, the place has been decorated with Olympic symbols, and a stage has been set up for Olympic themed events. The opening ceremonies will be covered live, and presumably live coverage will continue throughout the games to their closing on August 12.

SL Newser: No Convention This Year - SLCC 2012 Won't Take Place

Second Life fans whom enjoyed going to their yearly convention got some disappointing news. AvaCon, the group that organized last year's Second Life Community Convention (before, it was done by The Future United) announced it would not be doing another. There would be no SLCC 2012. The only reason given was "changes in the terms of the contract offered by Linden Lab this year," which they did not mention. The event would have been the 8th SLCC convention, and likely would have taken place on August 11th or 18th.

SL Newser: News and Commentary - Goodbye SL9B

Wednesday June 27 was the last day to see the SL9B, Second Life Ninth Birthday Exhibits. So went out on the field one last time to see what I had missed. I took a few freebie souvenirs, played a couple games, and of course saw a lot and took lots of pictures. Most of which will probably never see the light of this paper, though I'll probably add a few to my Flickr when things quiet down a little.

SL Newser: Kev Sweetwater's Burn2 Memorial Service

Last week, the Burn2 community lost one among them when Kev Sweetwater passed away. On Saturday May 19th, a memorial service/wake was held for him at Deep Hole, attended by his friends in the Burners, the Tombstone RP, and elsewhere. The end of the service was marked as only the Burn2 community can: with a ceremonial temple burn.

SL Newser : Interview with Michi Lumin- Bixyl Shuftan

image of Michi Lumin retrieved from slnewser.com
In Second Life, one of the oldest communities is Luskwood, which is also the location of the oldest furry avatar company on the Grid. The four whom started the place, and company, are known as the founders. And probably the most popular of them is the skunkgirl in the top hat, Michi Lumin. Recently, Michi sat down for an interview, and talked about a number of subjects concerning Luskwood, the Grid over the years, and Linden Lab.

SL Newser: The April 2012 Cross-Sim Snail Race -Bixyl Shuftan

RacerX Gullwing (image retrieved from SL Newser)

Snail Races are one of those "only in Second Life" phenomina unique to the grid. Organized by RacerX Gullwing, they usually take place on a track. But once a month during the Relay for Life fundraising season, there are cross-country, or cross-sim races, taking place across numerous sims. The April Cross-Sim race was held on April 28th on the mainland, going past noted locations such as "The Shelter," and ended a few sims away from Abbots Areodrome. And a certain fox reporter was there to cover it.

SL Newser News- SOPA Act Two? CISPA to be Decided in US House as Soon as Today - Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

Remember the mess over SOPA in December and January? This proposed law had the potential for becoming "The Great Firewall of America," possibly meaning the end of favorite places online such as Youtube, Facebook, and Second Life. Despite a Congress seemingly poised to approve it, opposition to it and it's sister bill PIPA grew in numbers. The backers of SOPA eventually shelved it from a vote, and the opponents had seemingly won.

SL Newser News: The Titanic in Second Life- Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

With the 100th Anniversary of the voyage and sinking of the famous passenger liner Titanic, the attention of Second Life residents is drawn to the Grid's own Titanic. Opened in 2009, the ship attracts many residents on a daily basis. Some are drawn to the ship's haunting history, some to take a special someone on a date in a place of atmosphere, and some a little of both. This weekend, there were some special events aboard to honor those who perished in the sinking.

SL Newser News: "Direct Delivery" Marketplace Troubles and Rodvik's Response- Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

Direct Delivery for the Second Life Marketplace hasn't gone the way Linden Labs intended. At first, it seemed to be a simple bug of gifts to others not always reaching the recipient. But apparently, it's much more...

Although not as many real life businesses have an inworld presence as a few years ago, some continue to do some work in Second Life. One I hadn't heard of doing so was Raytheon, at least until I stumbled across a Youtube by accident.

The New Life Church (Image retrieved from SL Newser)

While people usually think of Easter bunnies and chocolates this time of year, for churchgoers it's also time to celebrate what Easter originally meant, the Resurrection. Second Life has it's share of churches. Among them is the New Life Church in the Shelton sim.

SL Newser Commentary: Linden Lab Is Destroying It's Newfound Trust

Longtime users of Second Life are all too familiar with the days of M Linden. Before him, Second Life was truly seen as "Your World, Your Imagination." But then, Linden Lab began making a number of questionable moves that didn't seem to make any sense, except possibly for short term profits at the expense of long term, or just made no sense at all. People began to have less and less faith in the Lab to run the virtual world in a competent manner. The doubt was to the point among some as to question any new move Linden Lab would make out of fear they'd just screw it up and end up making the Grid worse off.  Read More

SL Newser News: Spaceport Alpha/International Space Museum Is Back

Good news for space fans in Second Life. The Spaceport Alpha sim, home to the International Space Museum or ISM is back online after having been closed for a few weeks. There had been some concerns that the return of the place would be further delayed due to Linden Lab asking for both the back payments and a purchase fee for a new sim. But they were laid to rest when on Wednesday February 22nd the sim was back online for all to see.
