The diversity of Zorch Boomhauer in Second Life-Sandy Demina reporting

Diversity, intensity, reverence and heresy with a breath drawn long sometimes stretched tense as silvered steel over wood and bone with the power of his evocative and thought provoking lyrics- That's Zorch Boomhauer. His music has a sometimes painful directness and honesty rarely found even in earthy folk, and his tales tell themselves as elegantly in melody as in his sometimes brutal words.

Interview:

SANDY:First of all some words about you:where are you from?

Zorch: I was born in Dublin Ireland as a young man and immigrated to the US of A when I was two years old. I don't really have an accent, but my parent had one so... basically I speak like my Mom and Dad.

I think I Should mention, I'M NOT SCOTTISH. Not that there is anything wrong with being Scottish... I'm just not.

SANDY:How long have you been playing music?

ZORCH: When I was 3 years old my Grandfather started giving me Piano lessons on the sly. My Dad was sure all musicians where heroin addicts and didn't want his son involved in any narcotic driven shenanigans, so Grand Pa had to keep the ivory tickling on the down low. Grand Pa use to get pretty miffed at my lack of concentration, and I really don't think you can teach a 3 year old to play the piano. But oddly, at 4 I started to get a handle on it. By the time I was 5, and placed in Kindergarten, I was seriously screwed. I was sure the Alphabet started at "C" and there were no letters beyond the letter "G". I knew all to well, there was no Key of "H", and why would you need to count beyond 8?

I feel I should mention the musicians reading this are probably getting the jokes and I didn't know about chromatic scales until I was 7, bringing the need to count up to 12.

SANDY:What instruments do you play?

ZORCH: Well let's just limit this answer to instruments I've be paid to play. Piano (thanks Gramps) Random keyboard instuments, Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Dobro, Fiddle and Concertina. I've spent most of my checkered career in music being a "Band Guy". Hired mostly because I can play a lot of instruments and sing harmony as well.

In case anybody is interested, I won awards playing Banjo, Dobro, and Guitar.

In Second Life I only play guitar because it suits what I'm doing. However, I do play in 4 different tunings. Standard tuning, Vestapol tuning, Drop D tuning and DADGAD tuning. Basically four different dialects of Guitar.

SANDY:How would you describe your style?

ZORCH: Single word answer... "Iconic". When I say that, I'm implying my music does not fit into a comfortable genre, but in spite of itself has it's own signature sound.

A more wordy answer would be, consider my childhood, I had a Grandfather who was a jazz pianist, and a father who insisted on listening to traditional Irish music. Both sounds filled the air in my formative years, and have probably colored my perceptions of music ever since. Layer upon that foundation, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Joe Ely, The Clash, The Who, and just about anything else wicked cool, and you have the kind of sonic stock pile that leads to interesting musical conclusions.

But when all is said and done, everything gets filtered though the "Green". I play a sad song, some hear "The Blues". But it's not the blues it's the place where blues come from. A music tradition over 2,000 years old called "A Lament". There is a subtle difference between the Blues and a Lament. The Blues is, "I wish I was dead" and a Lament is, "I wish I was never born".

SANDY:You are a composer too,how long does it take to write a song/piece of music?
ZORCH: For the Record, I'm primarily a songwriter. My show are almost always 100% original music. On the rare instance when I do play a cover, my supporters have a strange reaction to it. It's kind of like witnessing a full solar Eclipse.

How long does it take to write a song? Your whole life up to that point. Of course that is the Zen riddle answer.

The last song I wrote, "I wasn't missing you at all", I got the idea for the song standing in the bed room. On the way to my studio to work on it, I stopped to make a pot of coffee. I sat down at the computer and started transcribing the song, and before the pot of coffee was brewed it was finished.

SANDY:How prolific are you?

ZORCH: I'm ridiculously prolific.

I've kind of prolific'ed myself in to a corner. Most people book you for an hour show, and simply stated I've got too many great songs to squeeze into an hour. I don't spend the hour trying to figure out what to play, but rather, what I'm not going to play this show. My supporters are great, and many of them have been listening to me for well over a year. I have a good idea what songs they Love and make a point to play them during the course of the show. Sometimes with a 60 minute time limit, some request don't get played and I hate to dissapoint my supporters.

However, I'm not just a prolific writer. I'm pretty sure I've probably got the most extensive body of available recorded music in Second Life.

The Available Second Life Discography is as follows.

"Songs in the Key of Green"
"The Sound of Red"
"Shades of Blue"
"Song and Story Vol 1"
"Shadow and Light"
"Ashes and Dreams"
"Retrospective Vol 1"
"Me and My Monkey"

All collections are available in world at the ZORCH Center, and I carry a bunch of vendor with me on display at my live shows. Several collections are also available via the zorchboom.com web site.

Just a foot note, all the collections listed were recorded in a two year time frame. And there are three collections deleted from the catalog.

SANDY:What do you spend the most time on; music or lyrics?

ZORCH: Well my music from moment one is music and Lyrics together. I write very spontaneously. I actually hear the song in my head. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It keeps the songs from being limited by what I can play. However, it does force me to employ some odd techniques. Songs often have weird time signature, oddball keys, and really freaking difficult bridges. On the other hand, some things are really simple. It cuts both ways. Whatever suits the song.

SANDY:Which acts have most inspired you?

ZORCH: It's not really "Acts" that inspire me, but rather musical moments. There are million of them. The Guitar Jazz band section of Queens, "Keep all good company". The String section of the Beatles "Elenore Rigby", the epic sweep of U2's "Where the streets have no name", the scream in the Who's "Baba O'Riley", and of course, the first time I heard the Chieftains.

Music is the most inspiring thing in the world. When I hear bad music I turn it off, when I hear good music I turn it up.

SANDY:Where do you get ideas for songs/pieces of music?
ZORCH: From the unrelenting crucible of Life. While "Story and Song Vol 1" is my most profound work in many ways, not many people have a copy. Those that do, are waiting for the next volume.

SANDY:Except for other musicians what else inspires you?
ZORCH: The unrelenting crucible of Life. I'm detecting a theme here.

SANDY:What has influenced you to get your to where you are today musically?
ZORCH: A quirky combination of arrogance and stupidity. I'm sure a more insecure and intelligent man would have chucked it all by now for a promising job selling insurance.

SANDY:Which song would you most like to have written?

ZORCH: Skullcrushers mountain, Johnathan Colton

SANDY:Let's start spending some words about SL : How did you discover it?

ZORCH: Zack Claxton wrote an aritical about playing music live in Second Life. So if the finger of blame must be pointed it's all Zack.

SANDY:what brought you inworld?

ZORCH: Ummmm... a computer. Is this a trick question?

SANDY:Did you ever think to use your real name for what you usually do in Second Life?

ZORCH: One of the cardinal rules of dude-dome is "Never use your real name". I've never used my real name in any of my musical endeavors why start now?

SANDY:What you like to do here in Second Life when you are not playing?

ZORCH: True confessions time. I'm a horrible Second Life resident. I show up a half an hour before a show to drop notice and TP to the venue. The reason I show up early is simply because TPs can be kind of dodgy sometimes and I don't want to be late for a show because Linden Labs dropped the ball.

SANDY:Do you like shopping or going to music concerts or art exhibits?
ZORCH: In world I only spend money on tips and renting a stream. I was a shopper once, but now that I earn my humble crust of bread via my musical adventures in Second Life, I don't really shop.

Since I show up early for all my shows I see all kinds of musical acts. But I don't seek them out. I just stumble across them.

SANDY:Do you think SL can be a valid showcase for your RL works?

ZORCH: I don't see an distinction between real life and second life when it comes to music. When I do play in real life, it's the same songs I play in Second Life. Anybody that checks out my music ends up at the zorchboom.com web site.

SANDY:Do you use other kind of digital promotions?

ZORCH: Just my web site zorchboom.com. I do sell a good deal of my MP3 collections right from the site. While I do have a "MySpace" page, it's not really something I keep after.

SANDY:Where do you see yourself a year from now ?

ZORCH: I have no idea where I'll be a year from now. I'm trying to get the real life music thing going, but maintaining the performance schedule I have in world is pretty time consuming. Time will tell. Not to sound overly pragmatic, I'll do whatever I can do. If I can book more real life shows I'll do it. Real Life pays better. On the other hand, Second Life is pretty easy to stay busy at even if you aren't making much money.

It seems a bit presumptuous to call someone an ‘old timer’ when they are a mere 32 years young and extremely beautiful their real life, but Lanai Jarrico is one of the original pioneers of the now vast Second Life media circuit. She’s just celebrated her fifth rezz day which coincides with the fifth birthday of her long running and much loved newspaper ‘The Second Life Enquirer’ which she brought to SL after its initial conception in another virtual world.

Each week over the past five years, ‘The Second Life Enquirer’ has reported on all aspects of SL and the numerous activities of its millions of residents ;consistently building a solid reputation as the paper that is always first with breaking news. In its long history, SLE (as it’s known affectionately by all its readers) has reported on both the humorous-and tragic, and has also been responsible for some serious investigations into the more shady side of our virtual community, helping to expose real life criminals and griefers alike.

Alice In WonderSLand Review- Avatar Repertory Theater Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

• Thursday, May 13, 2010
On Saturday May 8, 2010. I was invited to attend “Alice in WonderSland”, a production put together in SL by the Avatar Repertory Theater.
It's definitely a MUST SEE from start to finish for those into the performing arts. Everything from receiving my ticket, falling down a rabbit hole and feeling like I was seated at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, til it was all said and done. I was at the edge of my seat. It was well put together perfectly and the cast delivered a fantastic performance that captured my imagination. Despite having a griefer show up, That only meant, this crew is doing something right.

After Receiving my ticket and NC of instructions, I teleported to the entrance where I was greeted by Art Usher JadaBright Pond. I handed him my ticket and was lead to a giant wooden door.
Intrigued I teleporting to a dark shadowy domed room . A spotlight was shining against a worn black and white checkered floor with seating for the audience built right into the scene.

The first scene started in the woods where Alice begins her wondrous adventure. She spots a white rabbit and curiously follows him into his hole where she falls for what feels like an eternity, landing at the bottom looking at many doors. One being very small...

The basic recreation of the view that Mr. Cardalines had before Stacey completed her conquest of him...
A lot of people come up to me and say, "Stacey... you sure do a lot of sports... often ones that involve physical violence or ridiculously powerful machinery... do you have any sort of delicate, feminine side at all?"

Yes, I do.

One of my favorite places on this virtual earth we share is the Golden Hearts Jazz Ballroom. Run by our good friend Christabelle Vyper, GHJB is a sim dedicated entirely and 100% to Romance.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE- Extreme Paintball- Lacy Muircastle Reporting...

In Second Life as in real life anything is possible and if you can think it, then you can do it and so we introduce to you Extreme Paintball!!
Paintball is an exciting game of Tag and Hide and Seek all rolled into one. There are many variations of the game, where two teams attempt to cross terrain, capture their opponents flag, and return it to the flag station without being marked by a paint pellet. Each player is armed with a C02 marker that shoots soft gelatine balls the size of a bath bead. These are filled with a washable paint that splatters upon impact. Games vary in time, but most players will get in several games in a session.

Extreme Paintball a division on of Ultimate Experiences, is a professionally run SL paintballing venue. Whether it's a corporate event, stag party, birthdays, rezz days or just a day out with friends, you can be sure your day will be a memorable action packed experience.

Known as a pioneer of virtual music, Cylindrian’s performances carry the listener on a journey guided by lyric and melody. Though, she likes to perform various cover songs that have inspired and moved her, she prefers to perform her own original material.
The woman behind the avatar, Grace Buford began her musical adventure at the tender age of 4 years old while listening to her older brother practice piano. That was the spark that ignited her desire to make music. Passion, perseverance, and determination have always been present in her music from that early age. Her desire to hone her craft continues even today as she attempts to impart some of that same ethic on her music students.

Lanai's Diary: 5 YEARS LATER. Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Staff Reporter
• Monday, May 17, 2010
I literally woke up one day back in October of 2004 and decided I needed to be a virtual world journalist because I wanted to write about what was going on. Also to throw a little salt on the issues that lingered in that primitive virtual culture..

Moving the paper to Second Life from The SIMS Online in 2005 during the great TSO migration, I just continuing what I was doing and ended up on the throne this past week celebrating a milestone while waving like a drama queen in a popularity contest. But I'm not complaining...

5 Years later, not much has changed with my delusions of grandeur except for tons more readers to the newspaper, loads of inquiries and a host of creative friends who share this same shameless virtual world addiction.

On Mother's Day, (May 9th) my avie turned 5 and I didn't even log into SL. I pretty much let it slip by like all the other years. Except, this year it happened to be a real holiday and I happened to be dining out of town and celebrating with my RL family. After logging in the next day I got to talking to Sir Brennen and mentioned never having a Rezzday party....

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: Steve Beck- The Model Maker- Persia Bravin Reporting...

Monday, May 17, 2010-
Ask any woman in Second Life what her most treasured possession held in inventory is and chances are it won’t be the extensive collection of shoes, love letters from ardent suitors or even special photographs, but something far more basic, yet central to a woman’s identity-her shape.

In our virtual world, the shape you choose to wear gives reveals vital clues about our real life tastes far more than any other accessory. It is ultimately what defines how others see us, reflecting how we want to appear in our pixilated world. There are thousands of shape designers in Second Life and as a keen social observer (ok-nosy journalist) I can now enter a room and after a quick scan, match shapes to designers in seconds. While the majority of shape makers stick to producing wave upon wave of standardized variants on your typical ‘model’ silhouette, one man has very cleverly, used real life scientific research into what constitutes classical ‘beauty’ and transferred it into SL to produce a breathtakingly beautiful selection of shapes.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE- A Mother on a Mission. Project Jason & Garden for the Missing ~Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Staff Reporter
• Monday, May 10, 2010
Virtual worlds can be viewed as a time consuming “game” to many who have never experienced what an international community can achieve while working together. But according to 51% of our readers. Second Life is an extension of their real life.

There are still those people in our real world who are ignorant to this new social networking generation and are quick to pass judgment before realizing Second life is much more than a video game or waste of time.

As a virtual journalist, I view this platform as an ingenious media tool. With access to countless resources and networking communities all over the world.

The ability to help pass along news has always been my way of bringing awareness to many fundraisers, organizations and resources that help people or, at least try to influence others to be a part of some of the great and well known Humanitarian efforts in the world.

From The Red Cross, The American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life', West of Ireland's “War Child”, Toys for Tots to Project Jason.

According to reports by organizations across the country, there are over 2,300 people reported missing daily and over 900,000 cases a year. The majority being adults with close to half of those being juveniles under the age of eighteen. These numbers have rapidly increased from 25 years ago when numbers averaged roughly 150,000 annually.

These numbers are staggering and leave many families and loved ones to wonder, Where can these missing people be?

Feeling helpless, many stop there, but for the loved ones it is a daily struggle with unanswered questions, hopes of recovering their family member, and beginning to heal.

These heartbreaking stories play on for many around the world. These people need our help and support.

How can We Help? Let's begin with one mother who has been on her mission since June 13, 2001.

Dave Renz performs on the east Coast, playing mainly acoustic jazz. In Second Life he plays his jazz with the Robot Band that symbolizes the music programs used to create the sounds we can hear at his gigs.Trowzer sings and plays sax live, while any other sound is created through a series of software packages.

Working with the robot band allows Trow to provide a great sound inworld, yet still play his instrument live and spontaneaously.

Lanai's Diary- Entry- 4.26.2010

I have to begin this entry Thanking my sidekick organizer “O” . I won't say his full name after the whole Easter bunny incident because I think it made him camera shy.

Anyways, Him and the family, held down the SLE camp while I was gone with my powercord issues.
So before I ramble on. They needed to get some props. Love you guys, thank you!

Wow where do I begin, a lot has been going on since getting my new power cord. OMG and thank goodness internet withdrawals are no joke. I almost picked up a gambling addiction and cigarette habit.

Stepping back into the SL media circus even after 4 days felt like trying to hop on a treadmill as it's rolling full speed ahead. My drive to continue on this creative journey has turned me into an admitted Avie with OCD and ADHD. But who needs meds when I kinda manage to get back on track because of it. Even if I look a hotmess holding my tiara and sprinting in glass slippers.

Please use caution when doing your Spring decorating this season or something like this can happen to you too...
On Sunday while sprucing up the media center for Spring I decided to dig thru my inventory for some butterflies to add to the place.
Locating a mystery box simply named “BUTTERFLYS” I snatched it from inventory and drop it to the ground. All of a sudden a swarm of butterflies were forming a giant particle halo around the center...
Some butterflies had peace signs in there wings and others in a joyous colorful displays big and small.
Immediately I was overwhelmed and could no longer stand to see this or risk going into a virtual panic attack or worse some sort of graphics seizure the XBOX warns gamers about.

In the Spotlight: Model/Host-Manager Jovial Jewell talks about her modeling work and being a Host-Manager at Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge

Today’s SL Enquirer Spotlight falls on nearly-three year old avatar Jovial Jewell, who spoke this afternoon/evening with SLE staff reporter Ramon Federal about her two SL careers, one as a high-fashion model and one as Host-Manager of Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge.

Jovial, who sat for her interview in a flowing white dress, was trained by Ewing Modeling School, where she “learned…about styling my outfits and how to walk the runway,” and has also been an instructor there. “I have been in many shows for designers like Chez Gabrielle and Fierce Designs. Also Hotlala Designs.”

Being a model in Second Life is very satisfying for Jovial. Asked what she likes best about the work, she said, “I love the fashion industry, love the fashion industry. I've always wanted to be a model in RL, so this lets me live that out a bit.” She also mentioned that she usually gets to keep the clothes she models, no small perk when working for the designers she has.

News in a Nutshell- Lanai Jarrico Reporting... (OLD ARCHIVES)

Staff Reporter
• Wednesday, March 03, 2010
From Tigers Public apology, natural disaster and the Winter Olympics games Our real world news outlets are all tied up in sports, entertainment and world drama at the moment.

It's an interesting place to be caught in between keeping up to date with local news and the news generated by avatars in a virtual world but decided since I get news leads popping up all the time from residents of Second Life about this and that I figured I'd sum it all up into a news Nutshell....

SLE Police Reports- 3/1/2010 LIKE OMG HACKER WARNING BEWARE!!!!??!!! ~Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

--------------------------------------------------
3/2/2010- HACKER UPDATE- jsgior32 Toxx (rezzdate 3/1/2010) who was previously mentioned as "jsgior32" now has a last name and upon reviewing the accused's profile. It read's "Yeah, I'm the one they told you about. ;)"
Lock your doors and windows folks...
---------------------------------------------------
Monday, March 1, 2010- According to an urgent hacker alert which began cirrculating on Monday morning amongst avies wanting to protect their fellow peeps from menaces to second life society has sadly been haulted in its tracks. I'm left bewildered and wondering what the heck is going on and why the heck am I dressed like Sherlock Holmes
sidekick....
I came across The actual alert which claims,
" Don't add anyone named jsgior32. She is a hacker. Tell everyone on your buddy list because if someone on your buddy list adds her, she'll be on your list too. She'll figure out your computer ID and address. So copy and paste this message to everyone on your buddy list because if she hacks them you're next. I sent this to everyone on my list; so please send this to everyone on your list.."
Upon following some leads and asking if they knew any of the actual victims of this supposed hacking, One gave me a couple leads, another never returned my call, and the other told me they didnt speak english... So I feel getting to the bottom of this would be like swimming in a pool of honey.
Still needing to know who this clown was running umuck and threatening the good people of Second Life I took it upon myself to whip up the trusty Sl Search Engine in one last ditch effort and looked up "jsgior32" myself.
Either the LL Secret Service caught wind of this Sl Problem and handled it, the accused's name is mispelled and incomplete or this Hacker never existed in the first place.
Confused and Unsure who the real source is of this Hacker alert chain letter of sorts, it makes me wonder just how effective these notices are when not enough information is given.
On behalf of Al those for Grief Control. Be safe out there Second Lifers.... but keep those eyes peeled for Griefers they can strike at any time. knowing how to defend yourself is half the battle....
SPA DUM TAH!

SL REIKI & REIKI PRODUCTS CREATED BY LINDA LAUREN written by Sumi Portola

Reiki Treatment

The Reiki Principles of Mikao Usui

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings
Just for today I will not worry
Just for today I will not be angry
Just for today I will do my work honestly
Just for today I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by a licensed “attuned” practitioner by "laying on hands" or over a distance, and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

A treatment treats the whole person, including body, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace.  Reiki has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Linda Lauren has created multiple products that allow Reiki Maters and Practitioners to give/send Reiki via her specially created Reiki Tables and Attunement Stations.  As the foremost provider in Second Life of Reiki Tables, Linda continually adds new forms of spiritual healing and wellness to the metaverse.

Please stop by and look at her products!

Spotlight On...Sicily Mall , Azalea Fall & Tyrone Taringa- Leabros Memel Reporting...

Staff Reporter
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Azalea Fall and Tyone does the heavy lifting…

“Sicily Island Malls and Peppermint Properties owners Azalea and Tyone forge a partnership that is both profitable and poetic in their Second Life.”

When you do a highlight article, you’re never quite sure where the story will take you. I teleported into the Sicily Mall area, and at first just shook my head. After a while, you know, in both RL and SL… all malls start to blend together and look the same. So I was pleasantly surprised to get an inside look at how Azalea Fall and Tyone Taringa have made Sicily Island a unique experience. It’s not the outside that matters here, it’s the service and the inside!

“Always good to start at the beginning.” I said, “How did you two start to collaborate, and how have you started SL dreaming together?”
Tyone Taringa quickly chimed in. “Well, I started Sicily back in March 2007. I had previously started SL in October 2006 and opened my club, Spunky BT's in December 2006. When Sicily started, I wanted a club and mall, no residential back then. I bought my 2nd island, Sicily Beach Resort in September 2007 which was entirely residential. Sicily back then was only a commercial sim, relying on the club and mall to make traffic.”

Common “Since” or Common BLEEP? ~Lanai Jarrico Reporting...
It was reported by Star2 Aurbierre that last week's Hall of Shamer caused her grief too in what was supposed to be a very special moment of her second Life.

It is sad that more and more of these reports are trickling because of the article I did last week about Precious Beverly the Bad Business Owner of Adore Babies. I just hope others dont become victims.

This conversation between these two women clearly shows Ms. Beverly treating Star2 badly and even admitting to offering a free service out of the “kindness of her heart” and then contradicting herself by becoming a nasty No Show Midwife who does a half assed job and then making it look like poor Star2 was at the wrong for simply wanting to know when they can reschedule to get her baby delivered since it was offered to her.

Linda Lauren's Crystal Cave of Enlightenment Redesign reported by Sumi Portola

View of the Altar in the rear cavern.
Linda Lauren's Crystal Cave of Enlightenment, located on her island, ETU Abbracciare, has reopened after an extensive redesign.

Linda has visited many caves during her RL travels, and she has incorporated what she seen from each experience to create this new, once of a kind, comforting and healing environment.

The crystals are infused with Reiki Healing Energy, the meditation pillows offer a calming vibration and the lounge areas allow one to gently converse with friends.  The 2 caverns each have their own unique atmosphere.  The front cavern has an intimate seating area,  unusual meditation bottle and fun snake charmer animation sure to bring a smile.  The larger rear cavern is first seen by its amazing water fountain along the back wall.  Also in this part of the Crystal Cave are seating areas, meditation pillows and a large beautiful Altar cut from the cave walls, that allows you to embrace the warm energy next to a built in fireplace.
