OpenSimulator Community Conference 2014 Expected to Sell Out, Tickets Still Available

Conference organizers expect the OpenSimulator Community Conference 2014 to be a sell out event this year.  The conference will be held on November 8-9, 2014 on an OpenSimulator grid designed specifically for the event, and focuses on the developer and user community creating the OpenSimulator software.

“Registration has been brisk this year,” said conference organizer Chris Collins.  “We have fewer than 100 general admission tickets remaining and they seem to be going quickly.”

High Profile Keynote Speakers

The conference features several high profile keynote speakers this year, including Philip Rosedale, CEO of High Fidelity, who will speak about the future of the Metaverse, and Steve LaValle from Oculus Rift, who will discuss the Oculus team’s race to deliver consumer grade virtual reality for mainstream adoption.

In addition, a keynote panel of core OpenSimulator developers will discuss the future of the platform, including the Hypergrid, content licensing and permissions, scalability, and project maturity.  Keynote panelists include Justin Clark-Case, Crista Lopes, Mic Bowman, Oren Hurvitz, Michael Cerquoni, and Melanie Milland.

Volunteers, Content Donations Still Needed

Conference organizers have also asked members of the OpenSimulator community to consider volunteering for the conference or making donations of content to help showcase the features and possibilities of the OpenSimulator platform.

“We still need volunteers to help with audience assistance and greeting, so we encourage experienced OpenSimulator users to sign up to be a volunteer,” said Collins.  “We also hope to give people more avatar choices this year, so we appreciate donations of avatar components or other content that can be shared with conference attendees.”

New Learning Lab Track Gives Hands-On Experience

The Learning Lab track is a new addition to the conference schedule this year, featuring hands-on learning sessions to help content developers, teachers, and others learn how to design and create engaging content in the OpenSimulator platform.
Topics in the Learning Lab include developing interactive fiction and gamification components for community building, importing and exporting content from other platforms, and using OpenSimulator for K-12 education.

“The conference is a great introduction to OpenSimulator for those who aren’t familiar with it,” said Collins, “and we hope experienced OpenSimulator users will come away with new tools and practical knowledge to continue to grow the platform.”

Registration for the virtual OpenSimulator Community Conference is free and open to the public.  The conference will also be livestreamed through UStream.

For more information please see the conference website at http://conference.opensimulator.org.

BOOFest Celebrates Four Years of Scary Stories Benefiting Worthy Causes

A partnership which began with a single story-based weekend in March 2011 has blossomed into a series popular annual events, including this weekend’s BOOFest – a celebration of stories told around a blazing autumnal fire featuring a gathering of virtual story presenters at their spooky and scary best Sunday, October 19 from 10am to 3:30pm, SLT.  All the performers are volunteers and the sessions are free to all Second Life residents, with tips this year benefiting The Lavender Field’s resident charity: Live and Learn in Kenya’s “Feed a Smile” program.

IT'S A FAMOUS PEOPLE NIGHT AT DADDY-O'S Thursday October 16th 6-8 PM SLT

Ever want to look like someone famous?  Well this is your chance! Dress up like a famous person and come to Daddy-O's for a night of music, fun and friends. DJ Huey Walker and his lovely Hostess Krissy Walker will be spinning the tunes as only they can! Come see one of the most fun and comfortable venues in SL - Daddy-O's, Where FUN Rulez!

“Spotlight on DCWF’s Commissioner Rossini, Second Life’s true Proximus”- Mony Markova Reporting

As I was going through some stormed days –I wasn’t looking for who did it, but for someone to pay for it... Nah not really, let’s try again… let’s say that I needed to find a way to cleanse my karma off really bad vibes out of my last secondlifean adventure. That’s better, but it has to be special because the SL Enquirer has set the bar high in readership numbers, comments and well, land shaking in-you–know-what adventure.

And the perfect assignment jumped right at me, an amazing, fun thing to do. So let’s get down to it, because there is only one good reason to check wrestling in SL, and it is the same good reason to do it in any life. To have a blast of a day.

Be wild, meet wrestlers, see the action and maybe we can chat with the very own, DCWF’s Commissioner Numbers Rossini, a cool guy in all his right.
By now, I already have found out that the DCWF or Digital Championship Wrestling Federation, does not use pose balls to play out the matches. In other words, the outcomes can be determined by skill and cunning of the amazing wrestlers. Just as an example, the ring ropes are flexible people, yes physics all around!

They have achieved these feats because the DCWF is not new, it’s the longest running professional wrestling organization in SL and yes, it uses a secret sauce –all I am saying is- that the NexGen Wrestling System, requires practice to master it. Just like RL they have a head trainer. I tried one part of the HUD, and I still don’t know how they do it. I couldn’t wait to see my first show, for me it was on Wednesday at 3:00 SLT. They also have matches on Saturdays 12:00 SLT and Sundays but it’s better to follow the schedules through their Facebook page, or group.
But enough with unveilings.

First we need to get to Slam City, the home to the DCWF Arena, grab the free gestures since you –the fan- are welcome to be a loud part of the show. Outside the arena there is a marina, a park and a hot dog stand. Slam City it’s also home of Hellkatz Angels Wrestling Extreme and HAWX, all-women's professional wrestling organization in SL, the finest, I hear.

I really don’t know what to expect, because we all know this is Second Life with all its limitations and circumstances. I will say this, if you like detailed things, you can come to appreciate the Arena. Take time to explore it, in the corridors to your seats you can see the a ring of honor with pendants of some of the gladiators, you can see Katherine Blackadder, Ace Nightfire, Misaki, Jerico Scarbridge, Victoria Vain, Jeffery Fireguard, Ms. A. Rae, Voodoo, Phara Akula, Mythil, Heidih Himmel, The General, Sir Quinworth, Bazza Windlow, Rosalind and more.

There is an executive suit, that –it’s not locked— you can see why the reporters are always drunk, smoked, and are basically spoiled people.  Cooton McKnight, Pepper Brooks and Blade Burner are commentators, it’s live! The wrestlers enter the match with special effects and in average 20 people are present in one clash.
After a violent outcome the wrestler -Andrea Dalca- was furious, she kicked the commentator’s table and just took a championship belt and she just didn’t care! Thanks God they have a referee –a constant boo target. Dalca left in a blaze as the winner laid on the mat. Crazy how they do this! But it was only the beginning!

Then was a hot Marcus Raimond versus Mister Mafioso, who is a cheater! -There I said it! But I found myself cracking when Mr. Mafioso had to crawl out of the ring after a bad hit he took. The announcers explain the moves, they are allowed to say Fuc** at this sim…. Quite refreshing from where I come from in SL. But if you have SL families and avatarian kids, please do bring them, they can get autographs, t-shirts and learn how to grow big and hot like Marcus or way scary like Jack O’Lantern.

-Look! There is the commissioner Numbers Rossini lets catch him. He has been difficult to get.
Mony: Mister Commissioner, a couple of questions. What does Success mean for you and all the people associated with the Federation?

Commissioner Rossini: Success is putting on a product that is true to wrestling tradition and its ideals.  It’s important to the DCWF to give a pure honest Professional Wrestling product. Success also means simply entertaining the fans in a way that they can walk away from the show and know that even though they were only in the audience, the show was for, about, and involved them.

Mony: Bad blood- between the wrestlers?

Commissioner Rossini: Professional Wrestling is a very competitive sport, and it takes all kinds. Some people like to cheat, others like to play within the rules. Often times rivalries heat up and people get mixed up with each other, that’s the nature of the business. We are fortunate that quite often the fallout from those rivalries and disputes happens in our arena, in our ring, and in front of our fans.

Mony: Commissioner, what do you see as the future of your loved sport?

Commissioner Rossini: Man, there are so many dynamics to SL Wrestling as a whole, that’s a hard question to answer. It’s been around for 7 years now and at the very least I'd love to see it hit the 10 year mark. It has changed, evolved and grown so much, it’s hard to tell what it will look like a few years from now but I look forward to seeing how it shapes, even if I’m no longer a part of it.

Mon: And I ran out of space, but I cannot go without mentioned that the Commissioner was especially thankful and to all the people that makes this sport possible and named them in length, unfortunately we are on tight space here.
If you are looking to see something awesome in SL, go check them! And please add on the comments which is appreciated and helps make the article more visible around the metaverse.
Over and out!

Stay Tuned for the new Date: SuperModel Fashion City Fashion Show 2014

Unfortunately during the SuperModel Fashion City fashion show the sim crashed on October 13th!
It was not a griefer attack. Linden Lab has confirmed this. It was the high volume of people it attracted.

Everyone wanted to see the event of the year! We certainly did not expect the turn out to be so successful and we thank everyone who came out to witness this event.
We' have decided to repeat the show and do it behind closed doors, while streaming it to youtube. We want to give people the opportunity to see it without technical difficulties.
Stay tuned for the new date!

Thank you

Company Puts Actors up for Auction to Keep Theater Live in (c)Second Life

Cookie, Second Life – Since its founding in 2008, Avatar Repertory Theater has presented live theater productions and presentations featuring live voice acting in (c) Second Life.  As they move into their seventh year on the grid, bids are open on their first ever Shakespeare By Request Auction.  From now until November 7th, visitors to the Company’s theater on Cookie can place bids on different members of the acting company for the chance to choose a command performance by that performer from the works of William Shakespeare. These performances will be presented at the Company’s popular “Plays Around” scheduled for Friday, November 21st at 5:00 pm slt

Panels adorn the patio outside the Avatar Repertory Theater, with the image of each actor or actress whose performance skills are up for bid.  Once the auction closes, the winning bidders will have less than a week to choose their selection from the Shakespearean theatrical canon for that specific player to present.  Winners can be as specific or general as they wish in their request:
·  Simply indicating the play they want, and let the actor find something from it.
·  Choosing a specific scene from a specific play
·  Requesting a favorite monologue that they’ve always wanted to hear this actor perform.

The setting will be simple, featuring Avatar Repertory Theater’s Shakespearean style performance space, which is often obscured by a variety of sets and settings for their biweekly ART Plays Around performances.

Bidding is open to all Second Life Residents.  Those who are less familiar with the company’s players can sample the company’s work at Plays Around performances scheduled for Friday, October 21st and November 7th, also at 5:00 pm slt.
Among the oldest artistic organizations of their kind, Avatar Repertory Theater’s mission is to bring diverse, live theater to a widening range of people through virtual performances, and to expand and challenge their own talents in the craft of acting using this unique media.  This has brought life to everything from first-time realizations of works by living playwrights, to major immersive productions such as their own adaptations of the classic Greek Drama Oedipus Rex (“Oedipus”) and the works of Lewis Carroll in "Alice in WonderSLand" and "Through the Looking Glass."

Proceeds from the Auction will help Avatar Repertory Theater continue to keep theater, performed live and in voice, a vital virtual presence.

Avatar Repertory Theater is a program of New Media Arts, Inc which has recently released its first Go Fund Me Video in support of their mission to develop graphical, theatrical, literary, educational, library and other fine and practical arts on the internet, in 3D graphical user interfaces, multimedia, new generation computing devices, and other electronic and digital communication media.
New Media Arts, Inc is a registered 501 (c) (3) tax exempt nonprofit organization in the United States, which can be reached at info@newmediaarts.org

Living Your Lyrical Reality: Poetry Contest- Bimala Tagore Reporting

There is a beautiful Indian story it talks about Krishna, one of the innumerable Vishnu’s avatars, the preserver aspect of God within the Hindu Trinity. One day Yosada, Krishna’s mother, saw her little child’s throat and found an immense starry vault that absorbed her into an endless vision of constellations in the night sky. Yosada had full comprehension of the immensity of Krishna.
A single poem could be a magical deity throat that contains the Universe in the shortest possible space. A magical poem is like Krishna showing the cosmic form to Yasoda. A single poem could reach its most perfect literary expression in few verses.   It is a mysterious sphere that comprises the totally.
Poetry suggests instead of enounce.

Daily language or ordinary language is a different kind of expression. Used to agree with others, social purpose informing, etc. and it tends to schematize. Poetry is evocative like the blues that remind old memories. It provokes emotions in the reader and sometimes cloudy images. Poetry does not describe emotions, but it perceives. It means the reader becomes aware  directly through any of the senses. In poetry you could recognize feelings such as pain, anguish, etc., because the poet has become the best medium for expression. Imagine the silence that suggests displeasure between lovers. Poetry suggests instead of enounce.

Living your poetic reality
We want to encourage everyone to participate. Write some lines of verses after or before the snow falls. It can be a placid experience that has true bonding power. This is a perfect time to play on words. Everyone is welcome to join this competition. “We are Gitanjali Indian Society”, source of inspiration for this contest, and we are promoting poetry explicitly for avatars in this universe called Second Life.  This is our second contest and we hope steadily grown in prestige. The first prize is 10,000 linden and our reward is symbolic, because it really worth fighting for in terms of genuine literary accomplishment.
Write a poem, max 15 lines on any topic and in any style rhyming or non-rhyming. Participation is free and we accept only English language entries. The only condition is to join the group called "Gitangali Indian Society". When you have finished, you will send it to Bimala Tagore in a note card by IM. Enter as often as you like using one avatar per poem. Closing date on December 31Th 2014.  Winning poems will be announced in January.

We are expectant that we may receive your entries in soon. We have four judges and one of them is well known from the SL Enquirer.
We will feel honored to meet you all through your words. Good luck!

Interview with a Vampire - LadyLoveDr Reporting

Multiple mysterious sightings have been reported at various locations across  Second Life!  One witness detailed a white faced tall, dark figure with red eyes wondering around a seemingly abandoned cemetery.  Another witness spoke of a beautiful pale skinned woman he met in a bar who mesmerized him with the words she spoke.  His memory of what happened next is very vague and scrambled into bits and pieces as if he had been drugged.  His wife reported his disappearance after not coming from the bar. He remained missing for 5 days.  He finally came stumbling in at 11 am on the 5th day with a strange injury to his neck resembling the bite of a vampire.  After trying to contact his wife for a personal interview she replied with "no comment" and we later learned that her husband disappeared again one week later and never returned.  Many SL residents speculate, do vampires really exist?   Journalist LadyLoveDr decided to go deep into this dark world to uncover the truth and put an end to all the speculation.

The journey started with one simple question, 'If vampires do exist, where would I most likely find one?'  This question posed a more complicated response than I imagined it would.  I finally came to the decision of visiting the bar where the woman vampire who's words memorized the missing man had been.  I became a regular at the bar after being there nightly for 2 whole weeks.  By then, I was well known to some and pretty sure the others were under the impression I was an alcoholic.  I was finally approached by a woman I had not recognized at the bar before.  She sat down next to me and put her cold hand on top of mine.  I glanced over at her and as our eyes met I heard her say "We're ready for you now."  I sat there dumbfounded for a few moments.  I knew exactly who, or should I say what, she was.  I needed to stand my ground. I needed to be in control.  "What makes you think you're what I've been looking for?"  I asked her.

"You've been frequenting this bar for 2 weeks straight asking about us."
            "How would you know?"
            "I've been here watching you."
"No you haven't.  I would have noticed you before tonight."
"We're only noticed when we want to be."

She invited me back to her place.  I went willingly after making it well known that I was a guest and not dinner.  Once back in her domain I was able to obtain an interview with her and was granted permission to share it with the world to finally put an end to the famous question, 'Do vampires really exist?'

Interview with Alejandra Rassir

LadyLoveDr:  How would you define a vampire?

Alejandra Rassir:  Vampires are creatures of the night who are cursed by God to drink blood in order to remain immortal.

LadyLoveDr:  You told me you're in a clan, what is its purpose?

Alejandra Rassir:  My clan, Kindred Rose Noire, have a reputation for honesty, kindness and impeccable taste. Since the beginning of time our purpose has been to enforce the ancient traditions and shape the destiny of the Kindred. Currently we have 759 clan members that consist of vampires, lycans, and human hybrids.

LadyLoveDr:  Do vampires have any special powers?

Alejandra Rassir:  We have the ability to transform into almost any animal: bats, cats, dogs and smaller.  Some can fly or levitate, use hypnosis to mentally subdue their victims, and have the ability to hypnotize.  Most vampires are psychic, can predict the immediate future, use telepathy to read minds , and move objects by telekinesis.  We have control over physical pain, although any light weakens us and the sun causes terrible burns. All injuries can be regenerated when we go dormant.

LadyLoveDr:  Are you currently involved with anyone romantically?

Alejandra Rassir:  I have a great love that will last for centuries!  His name is Antonio Pointe Du Lac and he is also a vampire in the same clan.

LadyLoveDr:  Have you encountered any vampire hunters or vampire haters in the SL community?

Alejandra Rassir:  Yes, I've encountered vampire hunters.  I have personally killed some of them and tasted their blood on my lips.  I do not fear them, nor does any clan member of Rose Noire.

At the end of the interview I was treated to a tour of the Rose Noire grounds.  The architecture used to build their community is phenomenal!  There were things that scared me yet intrigued me at the same time.  Anyone is welcome to stop in and check it out, although almost all their members speak Spanish.  If you're an English speaking person like myself, I highly recommend picking up a free translator HUD from the SL MarketPlace.  They are always welcoming new members who want to take a walk on the dark side, be it vampire, lycan, or human hybrid.  So my fellow Second Lifers, do vampires really exist?  The answer is quite simple.  They always have.  Even for the speculators that will put denial at the top of their list.  They can deny all they want, but when it comes down to the cold hard truth, vampires are real.  Walking among us like normal citizens of Second Life.  They creep in the shadows hiding their real selves from the rest of the world and preying on the weak in order to survive another decade.  The next time you wake up in the morning and can't quite remember what you did at the bar last night, check yourself for the marks of a vampire because you might have just been someone's late night snack.
