Interview with a Disgruntled Elf- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

This article is back by popular demand

Christmas is fast approaching and I wanted to interview Santa because he is this holiday’s most popular mascot. However, it seems St. Nick was upset with me and too busy trying to re-edit the naughty list. Apparently someone hacked his computer and saved a bunch of avatars from receiving lumps of coal this year.  *innocent look*

I tried to interview Mrs. Clause but she declined my offer stating that they felt I was the culprit behind the hack attack. Not having much of a choice on who else to interview, I decided to ask one of Santa’s elves who was in a barn shoveling reindeer berries into a pile and going on a verbal rampage to himself.

Interview with a Disgruntled Elf

I approached him with caution in case he had the nerve to swing that shovel at me for sneaking up on him.

Lanai: Hi there Mr. Elf, I was in the area and was wondering if I can interview you about Christmas in Second Life. Do you have some time?

Elf: Hey Lanai what are you doing here?!? First of all, my name is Jeffrey and I don’t think you should be anywhere near Santa’s house. Word around the North Pole is you got into his naughty list and did some rearranging of names.

Last night he went on a drunken rant about how you walk around the grid like you are the queen of Second Life and snooping around doing all kinds of mischief.

Lanai: Is that so?

Jeffrey the Elf: He has been watching you for some time now and is looking for a tabloid that will interview him for a tell-all about you. From what he was saying, you have been a very naughty girl and just a heads up… he has some paparazzi shots to prove it.

Lanai: So? I’ll admit I did a couple things this year that would totally cause a riot between my FWBs, things that would make a stripper blush, cause an intervention, or make my parents cry in shame but that’s my business!  I’m grown.

Jeffrey the Elf: I have to admit that is kind of hot and I wouldn’t mind being added to your FWB list.

Lanai: oh good grief.

Jeffrey the Elf: Anyway, Santa has a special present for you since you have been so bad on top of hacking his computer. He sent me out here to round up a steaming pile just for you.

Lanai: OMG are you serious? Whatever happened to being innocent before proven guilty ? Besides that, Jolly old St. Nick was going naughty list happy on all my friends. I had to do something!

Jeffrey the Elf: Well little lady you caused some serious havoc here in the North Pole! Santa was on a budget because of his gambling and drinking problem so some avatars had to be put on the naughty list. There are not enough of us elves to make up all the presents this year.

Lanai: Why? What happened to all the elves that handled the Christmas load last year?

Jeffrey the Elf: Well *looks around* Santa is cheap. Besides that, he really sucks as a boss, treating us like sweat shop workers.  Can you believe he tried to pay us with McDonald coupons for free Sundaes and 20% off Sleigh Rides around the Clause Family Compound. To top it all off,  as a bonus, he gave us each a fruitcake!

Aside from all that, look what he has me doing now? If I didn’t need a place to stay I would be soaking up the sun on a nude beach somewhere on the other side of the grid.

Lanai: Interesting. SO anyway Jeffrey, is there a way you can sugarcoat Santa and all the wonderful things he does for others on Christmas? I want to give my readers a pleasant Christmas article.

Jeffrey the Elf: *Sighs* Santa is one of the kindness mascots you will meet.  He’s always jolly and…

Lanai: Ok nvm. That’s enough fluff.

Jeffrey the Elf: SO Lanai, how would you like this gift delivered?

Lanai: Ummm… send it to 945 Battery Street
San Francisco, CA 94111 C/O: Linden Lab

Merry Christmas SLE Fans.

Have a Save and Happy Holiday!

The Winter Solstice: Interview with Kara Foxdale, priestess at Sacred Cauldron- Bimala Tagore Reporting

All around the world December is the most mystic month of the year. If you feel more spiritual or sentimental, maybe it’s the influence of the “Winter Solstice”. The behavior of our Sun and its influence on the Earth leads us down new paths.
The solstice will encourage us to do some depth searching about our directions. The Winter Solstice has historical, cultural and religious significance. Many cultures organize feasts and festivals around this time.  It was originally an important pagan feast. Christianity projected itself into the popular tradition of the birth of Jesus. We could delve into the mystery of this festivity at the hand of Kara Foxdale, priestess at Sacred Cauldron.

Bimala: What is a “Winter solstice”?

Kara: “The Winter Solstice occurs astrologically, when the Sun reaches the coordinate of zero degrees Capricorn. The planet most resonant with Capricorn is Saturn.  Both Capricorn and Saturn symbolize the laws, boundaries, rules and operating manual of the culture. The Solstice it starts on December 20 or on 21st which the solstice falls on normally is called the festival of the year Yule, celebrated by burning the hearth fires of the Yule log”.

“The word Solstice comes from the Latin word “Solstitum” being a combination of two words “sol” meaning Sun and “stitum” meaning stop.    The Solstice has been celebrated around the world centuries before the Christian holiday Christmas. However came about from Christianity which had taken over the holiday and moved it to December 25 to Jesus birthday”.

Bimala:  Special attention should be paid to the cultural and religious significance of this time. Could you tell us about the relevance of the Solstice and Equinox in Spirituality?

Kara: “Many mythology stories of a God being born on December 21st is Horus the Egyptian God who was born from his mother Isis and father Osiris. His birth was like Jesus as Osiris was not alive when Isis became with child.   Other Mythology is about Odin who would represent the Holy King and also being known as Santa Claus.  In other religions such as: Pagans, Wiccans, Norse, Celtic, and others celebrate Yule, from December 21st and on wards in recognition of the return of the Sun. Significance of bringing home a Yule log is to be burn with their families”.

“Let’s look at the Sun for a moment here it's duty to shine in the universe and throughout time in ancient history.  History itself spreads across each country and has built on cultures and religion.  In Paganism which happens to become a wide variety of religions branching down such as Wicca, Celtic, Druidism, Shamanism, Egyptian, Norse, Heathern, and other new age spirituality.”

Bimala:    You were very precise and it was very interesting. The animism perceived the presence of the supernatural as integral to, and linked with, the physical world. Every mountain, river, spring, marsh, tree and rocky outcrop was inspirited.  In this sense, the sun had been worshiped by many cultures for centuries. It represents the main spiritual force.

Kara: “We know that the Sun is a source of all light and life it is the center to all spirituality and the journey of the Sun through the sky or even the planets with it.  It can be marked as, the four directions starting with spring, summer, autumn and Winter Solstice.  The Solstices also equal to the four cardinal points East, South, West and North and the elements (Earth, Fire, Water and Air).   Each of the Solstices are symbols across the Wheel Of The Year with the Sun at the center of the wheel.   As the Earth moves in the sky the Sun changes positions in the sky, which influences over the light and darkness, day and night and death of the passing of the seasons, but they also hold a greater spiritual significance”.

Mother Earth also known as Gaia heart beat slows down,  in us knowing that we have to remember to slow down as well.  Being balanced is always important as our energies and feelings can come out during this time we think of those who we have lost and have grief for.  The whole of the seasons also bring into mind the sense of life to continue a never ending cycle of death and rebirth also known as reincarnation.  There is a deep spiritual connection in all of this and our calendar holds the records all of these solstices or also called “Sabbath holidays” as they follow the Sun's cycles as the Earth moves around in a circle clockwise or called desoil.”

Bimala:    So beautiful all you share. If we want to become more linked to our self, is The Winter Solstice” a great opportunity to develop and formulate our visions?

Kara: “How would you formulate your own ideas?  What actions are you working on to achieving what you say or how would you manifest these goals?  Look at it as, the God is waking up from his slumber sleep and the Goddess now is going to rest now.  So the solar aspect of the Sun shining down upon us we are the children of both God and Goddess, Lord and Lady.  Your own focus should be your life, what you should  you recognize and give sacrifice to the necessary?  Acknowledgment or validation of the changes going on around you during each season. The change of the world around us and how the seasons move from one to the other we can see each one how it falls into place along the way and in celebration.

Bimala    Your words were a great inspiration and encouragement for me. For such inspiration rituals are superfluous. Let us know about some ceremonies. They are so significant for us to sanctify daily life and for groups of people to bond. How can we participate in this rite in real life and second life?

Kara: “In real you can find a group that is open to all who can come and attend a Real Life ceremony. You can look for real life groups off of Yahoo groups, www.wtichvox.com, Meetup, Facebook and other sources.  You can also decorate your home with a pine tree, decorations, and a Yule log to burn using pine cones, ribbons, candles, incense, using a table or altar to put your decorations on, poinsettias, rein deer, Santa and other decorations.  Food can be hearty such as stews, bread, cider, mead, mince meat pie, soups, and other winter foods. In second life world you can come to our Sim Sacred Cauldron and we are holding a Yule Ritual on December 19, 2014 at 7pm SLT.
Our rituals are open to the public and we welcome everyone who comes to our sim we are known as a safe haven and a place of worship and if you are seeking the Wiccan or any spirituality path. We are a Moderate Sim welcome all types of avies from Dragons, fairies, fae, dogs, cats, wolves, and more”.

Bimala: I will be there for sure. In fact, you are part of a Wicca study group in real life.
Kara: We are a real life organization and hold classes in world from our website (www.wiccanseminary.edu). We also are nonprofit and you can earn a degree in ministry from our school called “Woolsten-Steen Seminary located in Index, Washington”.    Our classes in world cover on a wide variety of Wicca, Ritual, Crystals, Sacred Sexuality, Sacred Dance, Wheel of the Year, Shamanism, Celtic, Norse, Egyptian, Meditation, Greek Mythology, History of Wicca, Pagan Parenting , Kabbalah, Tarot and divination, healing and other classes.  To take classes there is a fee of 39.00 dollars a month which goes to helping the school and our sim staying open as, we are a nonprofit organization as the teachers are volunteering their time some without payment.

Our school and sim flourishes in helping those who are traveling a journey to wanting to learn and obtain knowledge.  If you visit our website you will all the programs and classes that I have mentioned above.  We have other programs in our school that helps with finance situations and there is an application for both processes.

Celebrating the Holiday Season Around the World ~ December

Who says, Christmas and New Year are the only holidays observed this season?
There are many festivals celebrated widely around the world this December. And Second Life isn’t behind in celebrating them. The following are the list of festivals:

  • ·         Christmas
  • ·         New Year’s Eve
  • ·         Burning the Devil
  • ·         Hogmanay Festival
  • ·         Hot Air Balloon Festival
  • ·         Junkanoo Festival
  • ·         Winterfest Boat Parade
  • ·         Whirling Dervishes Festival
  • ·         Sunburn Festival Goa
  • ·         Hannukah
  • ·         Kwanzaa
  • ·         Klausjagen
  • ·         L’escalade
  • ·         Reveillon

       And many others.

. Well, now that we know a few, I would mention only those few in detail, which have also found its place in Second Life.

Christmas
It is one of the most popular Christian celebrations in the Western Church as well as in Second Life. This holiday commemorates the birth of Jesus on December 25th. For observers, it is the season of gift giving and sharing a feast with family and friends. Traditions include putting up a Christmas tree, decorating with lights, garland, wreaths and wearing ugly Christmas sweaters.

There are even classic Christmas Carols and stories shared including the iconic Santa Clause who comes to town giving all the good children gifts while leaving lumps of coal for the naughty.

Be sure to check the SL search for Christmas parties and events happening now until Christmas day. There are too many to name here!

New Year’s Eve
New Year celebrations begin on December 31st as people around the prepare for a new year as it begins in each time zone. In New York City, the traditional ball is dropped in Times Square witnessed by thousands in the street as  well on television. Many have New Year resolutions to break bad habits from the year prior or to begin a new phase in their lives with the ones they love. At the stroke of midnight, you will normally see parties happening, tons of confetti and music playing as well as many dropping to one knee to ask for their lover’s hand in marriage. This celebration marks a new beginning for all as the New Year begins.
In Second Life, festivities and events will happen all day as the clock strikes midnight across the time zones. If you are observing New Years in Second Life, don’t do it alone. Find a party and ring in 2015 with new and old friends. Looking to do a ball drop at your locations. I find a place where you can buy one along with a firework display!

Kwanzaa
It is a week-long celebration held in the United States and also celebrated in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving. According to Karenga, the name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits of the harvest". It celebrates the principles, each day dedicated to one principle.

1.    Umoja or Unity is celebrated on the first day to strive for and maintain the unity in the family, community, nation and race.
2.    Kujichagulia or Self Determination is celebrated on the second day to define, name, create for and speak for ourselves.
3.     Ujima or Collective work and Responsibility is celebrated on the third day to build our community together; make our brother’ and sister’ problems our problems and to solve them together.
4.    Ujamaa or Cooperative Economics is celebrated on the fourth day to build and main our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together
5.    Nia or Purpose is celebrated on the fifth to make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
6.    Kuumba or Creativity on the sixth to do as always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited
7.    Imani or Faith on the seventh day to believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
In Second Life: A party at the Gallery, on Friday, December 26th, 2014. Dj Voodoo and Dj Pike would be playing. This is a 4 hour event sponsored by Love Cats. Theme of the event is to wear best African inspired Outfit. The board would be set at L$ 300 plus a L$ 500 gift card for the winner and a L$ 150 gift card for everyone who stops by.

Hannukah
It is also known as Chanukah, the festival of lights is a Jewish holiday. It celebrates and commemorates events that took place over 2300 years ago in the land of Judea, Israel. Antiochus, the Syrian king commanded Jews to worship the Greek Gods, prohibiting them from the practise of their own religious beliefs. One man, Judah Maccabee defied the imperial dictator. He fought against the king along with his brothers for 3 years. The Syrians were driven out of Judea and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem reclaimed. The temple was cleaned and lit. It was dedicated to the N’er Tamid. There was barely enough oil to last a day, however, as if a miracle, the light burnt for 8 days. Since then, Hannukah is commemorated in triumph of faith by lighting candles in the menorah, one candle for each night, the centre one to begin with. It begins on 25th day of Hebrew month of Kislev.

In Second Life: The Grim's Domain Family Realm is presenting an off season Hanukkah special event for Relay for Life at the Chapel of Yeshua. They will be having 8 days of live music, DJ's and open mic for your entertainment to raise funds for Relay For Life. The singers are Emma Maria Bellisim, Gem Sunkiller, Hitomi Rosewood James and others.

StoryFest Events Announces Sunset with Fezziwig’s Ball- December 21, 2014 11am-4pm SLT

Imagination Island, Second Life – StoryFest Events, which began with a single story-based weekend in March 2010, will be closing the cover on event production with one final live literature event: Fezziwig’s Ball. Storytellers will gather on Sunday, December 21st beginning at 11am SLT to present the entire text of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday ghost story, A Christmas Carol, followed by a dance party with tips benefiting the Community Virtual Library.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Imagination%20Island/189/154/22

“It has been a fascinating ride and we have had many tremendously successful events.” explained Caledonia Skytower, StoryFest Events Director, “Not everything lasts forever, especially in the virtual world, or can continue in the same form.  We’ve gotten to the point where it has been clear we needed to evaluate where we were going, and what we needed to become.  It’s all good news, actually.  These sorts of celebration events will continue. It is simply that StoryFest Events as a production entity is no longer necessary.”

StoryFest Events has produced StoryFest, Bard on the Beach, and BOOFest for the last four years, and in 2012 added The Dickens Project. Fezziwig’s Ball is a condensation of the previous Dickens events, featuring many of the voice performers that have been a popular part of StoryFests over the years: Dubhna Rhiadra, Corwyn Allen, Kayden Oconnell, Aoife Lorefield, Shandon Loring, Freda Frostbite and Bhelanna Blaze as well as Skytower herself. As a sign that this is a transition and not a finale, John Morland will be introduced as a new voice among the cast of readers.  “I am really excited about John joining us for this.  He has a nice style and tambour that is a good compliment to the other folks we have,” Ms. Skytower added.

A Christmas Carol will begin at 11am with “Stave One: Marley’s Ghost” presented by Loring and Skytower, and will proceed with a new section of the text each hour, as performers pass the baton from one reader to the next, as Dickens’ ghostly story of Christmas and the redemption of a soul unfolds. Following the conclusion of the story, Dubhna Rhiadra will be spinning some wonderfully appropriate holiday music as storytellers and story lovers dance in celebration of four years of great, storied events.

For details on the presentation schedule, visit http://storyfestsl2011.blogspot.com/

All story presentations will be live in voice.  All the performers are volunteers and the sessions are free to all Second Life residents.

StoryFest Events thanks The Community Virtual Library for providing the venue for the event, and for their support of the debut of The Dickens Project in 2012. Many thanks also everyone who has been so incredibly supportive of StoryFest Events over the past four years, including: Crap Mariner, Inara Pey, Branwen Arts, Lizzo Dreamscape, Equinox Pinion & Denis Lagan, and Thinkerer Melville PLUS all the great storytellers, readers and performers who have been a part of Storyfest, Bard On the Beach, BOOFest, and The Dickens Project-- It's been a fabulous time!
