Living with a New York State of mind. A review of The New York City of SL- Sunny Love Holiday Reporting

One could surely state that New York City, NY is the fashion mecca of America.  Ranging from the high end shopping, extraordinary fashion shows, and stylish apartment living, all fashionistas from different cultures tend to look towards New York City at some point during styling in their life. Thanks to the hard work of Joi Price, Owner and Dylani Sweetface Chiantelle, CEO of NYC and all the brands under it.
The New York City sim in Second Life™ is no different.  I recently had the pleasure of spending a day shopping and exploring the Sim and was pleasantly pleased with my experience. I left with the feeling that everyone should take a trip to this sim. I couldn’t wait to get home, open my laptop, and share with the readers of SLE as to why.

Since being established on 11/11/2011, The New York City sim in Second Life™ has evolved into one of SL’s hottest go to places for all of your styling needs. Even spilling into your real life due to Joi Price’s Brand, Angels x Astronauts, that releases new items both inworld and in real life simultaneously.  There has been many well-known brands that got their start on this popular sim, but the equally well known brands of Animaux formerly known as Bellballs, LoQ hair, K-Code Legal Insanity, and Maki Kato has pretty much been there since the beginning and hold down the fort to ensure shoppers have the best to choose from.

If that wasn’t enough, The New York City sim™ in Second Life’s staff also took over the very popular fashion site, Fashion Feed Of SL, which has been noted as being one of the largest and known fashion feeds in SL. Which I feel, and I am sure most othesr do too, that this take over goes hand and hand with proving to be the Fashion Capital of SL.

As my journey began down Fifth Ave, the first thing I noticed was the authentic metropolitan city lifestyle draped all around me.  One of my fondest RL memories is my shopping sprees in the big apple and  I couldn’t help but to be amazed at how real the shopping experience was as I walked from store to store. This sin truly lives up to the big city feel but conveniently has tour guides located to prevent that “lost” feeling one might have traveling in a large city.

I entered a store that recently joined the New York commercial side by then name of Finest Art Design. I was lucky enough to run into its owner, Trulove67 Resident, as he was setting up shop for his launch. He was kind enough to take a break from his busy work and express his feelings about his move to New York.

“All  I can say is I love New York. “ He boasted. “Its beautiful place to live and the staff here is amazing!” After being a resident for some time and learning all the perks that the commercial units comes with, Trulove67 felt it was a perfect place to start his new business.

Shortly after my run in with this excited store owner, luck found me a second time by running in to the one and only Dylani Sweetface Chiantelle. After explaining my conversation with Turlove67, Dylani explained why she felt her commercial residents feel so much appreciation for the staff’s work.  “Not to brag but one thing I can say about our tenants. Everyone gets hands on treatment. When a store moves in we actually market them on all of our social media. We give them a grand opening event that we produce ourselves, and let them know they are not just money to us but a team” She explained.

The perks don’t stop at the commercial residents. Avies whom choose to live in one of the luxurious residential units are treated just as special. Each unit was custom built, so no one lives in the same style unit.

Dylani further explained, “Every unit is furnished but I will actually get input from a resident and do the decor for their style and taste. I actually update the furniture when new releases come out. I try to make every unit feel like a home. Each unit has different decor so everybody can feel like they have their very own space. But we are also flexible. So when a resident wantd things removed so they can furnish their units, we accommodate.”

Excitement rushed over me when Dylani offered to show me around an available Brownstone and studio unit, two of the most popular residential rentals.  As soon as I stepped in the door I was taken aback by the city view out the New York loft style windows and the modern décor. I honestly can say there wasn’t much I would change or then the fact I would need a nursery for my beautiful zoobie baby. When asked if Zoobie babies was something they could accommodate, Dylani quickly responded saying “When someone contact us about moving in, I usually ask if they have a family or not. I’ve had residents with Zoobie babies and redid the units with a nursery and whatever they needed. Pets are also allowed limited to cats/dogs at a limited amount.”

If you have not visit The New York City sim in Second Life™ for a shopping spree yet, or is has been a while since you have been in the city, I highly recommend you plan a trip there during this spring/summer with your family and/or friends. There are many fun and exciting plans being made for the upcoming seasons. You do not want to miss out on it.  Perhaps you are looking for a new place to lay your head. I can say with all the things offered to you as a resident, there is no better place to do that then this Sim. Start thinking with that New York state of mind!

Visit the Virtual Grand Canyon. It has Similarities to the Real Famous Landmark- Nena Dreadlow Reporting

Have you ever wanted to go to the real Grand Canyon but never had the chance? There is a whole sim in second life that offers a virtually real experience.  I visited this landmark and I must say that it does resemble the real life one in more ways than one.

Named an official park in 1919, The Real Life Grand Canyon is located in Arizona and is a steep sided canyon carved by the Colorado river.  This natural formation is 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide.

The Skywalk at the real location is managed by the Hualapai Tribe. It has a horseshoe shaped steel frame with glass floors and is 70 feet high. You can get a wonderful panoramic view of the canyon from this platform.

I visited the SL skywalk as it would not be something I would not do in real life due to being afraid of heights. The virtual skywalk is also shaped like a horseshoe, made of prim glass and very high up. It was nice observing the landscape from that height without being afraid.

Some of the activities offered in the Real life Grand Canyon are zip lining which takes you across at about  30 mph.  It takes about 20 minutes from start to finish. I thought I would try this in Second Life. It was a fast trip down to the bottom of the canyon. Still fun!

A popular activity at the Real life Grand Canyon is helicopter Tours. There are many options with different types of helicopters. You can take a tour from Las Vegas. I was happy to find a helicopter that I could ride around the sl sim. It was great to be able to look around and see everything from a bird’s eye view.

Another Activity is river rafting! Something I have never done but have always wanted to. At the Grand Canyon you can raft down the Colorado River to Diamond Creek or even Lake Meed. The trips can last from 2 to 5 days in the real world but in the Second Life you can take a quick relaxing trip down the river and not even get wet.

History is a big part of our cultural because it allows us a peek back in time. It  helps us understand the world we live in, how things can change but also remind us of our past and how the world was shaped.   I was glad to see that the SL Grand Canyon made sure to mention some things that happened in the real one.  It is both adventurous and educational.

In June 30 1956 the grand canyon was the site of the deadliest commercial aviation disasters in history. Two planes - A TWA and United Airlines collided above the canyon. Both planes fell into the eastern portion of the canyon near the Colorado River.  The location of the crash has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In Second life, The creators of the virtual Grand Canyon  made sure to include this piece of history.

The Pueblo People were thought to live in the Grand Canyon over 1000 years ago. There are six major tribes; the Havasupai, Zuni, Hopi, Paiute, Navajo and the Hualapai. The Native American Indians are a big part of the history at the canyon. The Havasupai Indian Reservation is opened to the public to visit that part of the canyon. Havasupai means people of the blue-green waters. The replica in Second Life  shows how they would of lived back then.

I love the fact that there are not only a lot of activities to do here. From hiking and taking a plane ride to taking tours or checking out the canyon from an observation deck.  But there are also things that you couldn’t do in RL like flying with your avatar through all the ridges and valleys to dancing under the stars with that special someone. They even have clubs and lots of shopping here.

As you can see there are so many similarities to the Real life Grand Canyon. What makes Second Life so unique it seeing things you would not normally see.

Calling all sailors, aviators and role players - Lacy Muircastle reporting ...

IrishGent's relentless negotiations with Linden Labs has paid off in the form of an additional 13 sims of open water.

Sweetheart's Pageant Winner is........ BroadwayGirl1 Resident!

The SL Enquirer has actively been following the Ms. Sweethearts Pageant, and recently found out that the new Ms. Sweetheart for 2015 is BroadwayGirl1 Resident!

The competition was held at 10 am SLT on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Sweethearts Jazz Social Club amidst a delicately decorated stage and runway.  At the base of the runway, were the following three judges:  Koko Mapiya, CEO of Regal Academy ◦ Agency ◦ Boutiques ◦  Magazine; his wife Eibhlíne, who is the acting Owner and Founder of Regal  Academy ◦ Agency ◦  Boutiques ◦  Magazine; and Mami Jewell, Founder and Designer of -AZUL- Fashions.  Though Nikki Mathison acted as the fourth judge, she had to leave the Pageant due to a prior RL obligation.

In addition to preparing the finalists for the pageant prior to the competition, these three judges were a responsible for posing questions to them, as well as ultimately judging the finalists in the following areas: Intelligence, Maturity, Humbleness, Avatar Beauty, Gracefulness, Personality, and their ability to answer questions when asked.

In addition to being poised and elegantly dressed in a regal black and white ballroom gown, Sweethearts Owner Shannon Bramlington acted as primary announcer and Facilitator of the pageant.  Prior to informing the audience that fifth finalist LadyRoseCherry Serenity was unable to participate due to preexisting RL obligations, Bramlington encouraged audience members to be polite to the judges, finalists, and others involved in the pageant by stating, “We do prefer for you NOT to send ANY IM's to ANY of our judges, Finalists, or to Blake or [myself] so that we all can keep our focus on the task at hand.”

The Task At Hand:  Crowning Ms. Sweetheart Finalist BroadwayGirl1 Resident
When asked by pageant judge Eibhline what the best and worst parts of Sweethearts Jazz Club were and why, BroadwayGirl1 Resident explains, “The best part of the Sweethearts Jazz Club is the warm welcome that you are given by the hostesses, friends and the owners. They make you feel like you belong. I can honestly say that there is nothing worse having directly to do with the club, other than the personality clashes among its members. When you think about it, we all have different personalities and it would be impossible not to have an occasional conflict…”

Occasional conflicts aside, the judges involved came together in their decision to crown BroadwayGirl1 Resident Ms. Sweetheart 2015. As such BroadwayGirl1 Resident will act as an Ambassador for Sweethearts.  As an ambassador, BroadwayGirl1 Resident will be highly involved in Sweethearts related charity events; these events will, among other things, benefit individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s Dementia, as well as benefit other nonprofit organizations like Creations for Parkinson’s.

Now that BroadwayGirl1 has been crowned Ms. Sweethearts 2015, she has an assortment of plans as to how she will spend her $100,000L prize.  She states, “To enjoy my prize, I would be saving it and not spending it all at once. I would be saving some for my wedding, and I would be frugal with the prize and perhaps give some of the prize to charity.”
With that being said, we at the SL Enquirer want to extend a warm congratulations to not only Ms. Sweetheart’s crown winner BroadwayGirl1 Resident, but would like to commend all the finalists who participated in the pageant.

AVIE POLL: How are Avies Observing St. Patrick's Day? Bimala Tagore Reporting

The color green seems to be taking over Second Life. Sims, venues, parks and stores are decorated with the traditional colors of St. Patrick’s Day.  A failure to wear green to an Irish venue on this holiday might be punished with a playful pinch from brave Irish hostess committed to this day.

“ST. Patrick´s day” is a special time. It isn’t just a one day celebration in SL; here, it’s turned it into weeks of carnivals,  sales, parties, Irish music and Celtic environments that envelope venues across the grid with a mystical aura.

This is an important cultural and religious holiday named in honor of Patron saint of Ireland called by the name of San Patricio. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world, particularly by Irish communities. People usually dressed in green or wear iconic decorations such as the “shamrock”; it is the leaf of the clover plant and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Other people carry the flag of the Republic of Ireland, other use snakes and serpents around their necks, as well as the Celtic cross.

We are confident that you will enjoy flying this wing and that you will soon discover the meaning of this green day.  Patrick´s day is a festive event, where the children enjoy sweets and adults can lose themselves in a cold “pint”.
Many venues on the grid share in the festivities with restaurants and pubs. They offer virtual Irish food which include: “Irish brown bread”, “cabbage”, “Irish coffee”, “Irish stew”, “Irish potato soup”, “among other traditional foods”. It is apparent Second Life is living up to this day.
The SL Enquirer wondered how residents celebrate St Patrick’s Day.
Here are their valuable testimonials.

Teer Latzo shares stories about running around with his granddad when he was a kid
"I have only once really celebrated St. Patrick's Day, and that was with a friend in Chicago. We were just in the right place at the right time and the festivities were huge, we did our best Irish jig for a bowl of soup. That was the only time I have been in actual celebration mode, my grandfather is Irish/Scottish and he used to celebrate every year with a wonderful Irish hang over, green and everything. Now our big day is sitting back with a green beer and eating corn beef and cabbage, it’s a simple pleasure and it works for us."

No matter if it is not part of our own culture.  This holiday it is an opportunity to share with the international community.
Here is Soffy´s (Soffly Ponyluver) and Mr. Lyle views:
Soffly: “I’m not religious and don’t hold to the traditional church stories about St Patrick and I’m not Irish so it doesn't have a cultural background for me.  For me St Patrick's Day is a friendly focus point where people can get together and forget their day to day problems and worries.   I'm just not crazy about green beer - I'll stay with red wine”
Lyle Lindman: “This celebration is a symbol and a way to connect and to cherish those values together and an uplifting way to cherish our tender humanity together.”

I was lucky enough to come across Ophelia Willful a learn how she observes St. Patrick’s Day.
“On these days I love that I can party with my friends. I dry “stouts” accompaniment for corned beef. These days are moments for the memories with my Irish friends. When we usually went to my grandparent's house. It was the point of convergence for all the senses. They were times to remember that time in our lives does not pass for nothing”.

Coffee (Moani Namori) supports “Patrick’s day” events at “Pointe Fusion” and it gets better brand exposure from important festival in SL that go for several days.  She notes,
We fully understand how important is conserve the actual spirit of unit on these days doing special Irish pubs background on SL”

Valeria Ansia, Kissing Boot tell us:
“When i was kid i used to get into town to the Parade with my sister fighting for the best good view.  We loved the whole day all the big floats and bands from America. Here in SL I love Irish hunt Patrick shamrock outfit and enjoying traditional Irish dance with my best Irish dj Aragain. Easterwood. She is an “Irish Women”, resolute and strong!

DJ Aragain. Easterwood is a DJ in Second Life, a professional fiddle player and also Saint Patrick´s devotee.  Here are her special words:
St. Patrick guard you wherever you go, and guide you in whatever you do, and may his loving protection be a blessing to you”, tell us inspiring.

If you are in SL on St. Patrick’s Day you can't miss this time. Fun events will take place around the grid and you can’t miss this cheerful atmosphere. You can ride on flying gold coin, dance the jig with your friends, drink green beer and listen to Irish music.

The most colorful party is waiting for you this month, so follow the rainbow to St. Patrick's Day Town.

The Story of St. Patrick’s Day and How it is Celebrated Today- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

St Patrick’s Day is an Irish Holiday celebrating the patron saint, Apostle of Ireland and missionary among the Celtic pagans. St. Patrick is said to be responsible for chasing all of the snakes out of Ireland.  According to studies, there were probably no snakes on the island in the first place because it was separated from the continent at the end of the last ice age. The idea that St. Patrick drove the serpents out of Ireland is symbolic in reference to putting an end to Pagan practices by introducing Christianity.

He wasn’t the first to bring Christianity to Ireland but he is credited for abolishing Pagan rites when he encountered the Druids and converted the warrior chiefs and Princes. He also baptized thousands of followers in Holy wells.

The date March 17th marks St. Patrick's death in 460 A.D.

You may be wondering how the shamrock became such an iconic part of St. Patrick’s day. Well, as the story goes, Saint Patrick used it as a way to explain the holy trinity to the Pagans.

Today, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with shamrocks as the iconic symbol. The colors green and gold are associated with this holiday and symbolize good luck. In Irish faerie folklore, the Leprechaun is also a popular figure associated with St. Patrick’s Day.  They are described as devious and smart little creatures and if you catch one you are considered the luckiest person alive. It is said that every Leprechaun has a pot of gold buried deep within the Irish countryside and if you catch one the gold is your prize. But they can bring you more trouble than it is worth.

Irish Immigrants are responsible for bringing St. Patrick’s Day to the US where it was first publicly celebrated in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737. In 1756, it was first celebrated in New York City at the Crown and Thistle Tavern. Today it is widely celebrated in the United States by both Irish and Non-Irish people and is associated with wearing green, parties, parades, pub crawls and drinking alcohol… lots of it. In Second Life it is observed with decorations, hunts and parties.

If you Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, drink responsible, be safe, have fun and good luck with that hangover!

AVIE POLL: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST ISSUES FOR AVIES IN SL?- Sunny Love Holiday Reporting…

The virtual world of Second life is loved and revered by many. It provides an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of real life. Allowing people to be free to be themselves, explore fantasies, or to become their alter ego. With something that brings so much joy, there are always issues one much endures to enjoy such wonderful things. I decided to poll avies from all walks of life to see what people thought were the most troubling issues that plagues avies across the grid, and what they think would be the best possible solution to the problem.

Spirit Wingtips, owner of Espiritu Photography

SLE: What do you think are the Biggest Issues for Avies in SL?

Spirit Wingtips:  LAG the age old problem of lag and the HUGELY disproportionate LACK of men’s clothing and items as compared to women’s. Us men like to shop and like to have choices too. Designers need to stop being lazy and bias. Support us men !

SLE: What do you think would be a proper solution to these problems?

Spirit Wingtips:  Linden Labs and the entire SL community getting up and proactively doing something to help combat the issue of lag.  Also, Incorporate Education programs so people know the REAL cause of LAG and what to do about it. That would be a start.
As for designers in SL, they need to realize that us men want and need options as well. we are more than jeans and a tee shirt, we want QUALITY items and well designed items as well and not  half hearted effort prefabs "just to say we carry men’s items". This is not to say all designers do this but if you teleport around to most events and shops they have 90% women’s clothing.
Oriana Robertson, Interior Blogger extraordinaire

SLE: What do you think are the Biggest Issues for Avies in SL?

Oriana Robertson: The biggest issues that I believe are facing Second Life are the lack of positive interactive activities. Granted, the major draw to second life (or as it was promoted in the beginning) is that everything that exist in-world is created by its residents. Still, there are not enough events and things to do on the grid that will encourage the residents to get creative, help one another, and generate positive social interactions. As a result, second life is full of people who are bored, lonely, and in need of attention so they turn to negative ways to fill that void.

SLE: What do you think would be a proper solution to these problems?

Oriana Robertson: A possible solution would be for the Lindens to create better incentives for people who are hosting events that will bring residents together; especially activities that will help those who are having trouble finding their way or "niche" within the community. They can do this perhaps by offering free or low cost classes for those who would like to learn a special skill. If not low cost courses then as an alternative they can offer affordable rent for people who host events like these.

Chocolate Voom-Wingtips, Creator, Wife, and Mother

SLE: What do you think are the Biggest Issues for Avies in SL?

Chocolate Voom: The biggest issues that me and many avas that I know have are: inventory loss and copybotting. I have had my share of inventory loss over my 8 years in SL.  The loss that really irked me was during December 2014.  I lost two rare gacha items that are next to impossible to replace without spending a small fortune.  This loss occurred during unscheduled maintenance.  I did not rez them; the items simply vanished from my inventory.  There is no way to get the items back from either the creator or LL.  Inventory loss is not always discovered immediately; usually I am searching for the objects when I discover they have vanished.  SLers should be compensated even if a small percentage of their loss is returned, by Linden Labs.
Another big issue that avies are facing is the increasing risk of purchasing copybotted items on MarketPlace and inworld.  Thieves are more brazen than ever and rip off hardworking legitimate creators all of the time.  I see so many illegal items on MarketPlace.  It's terrible for the creators and the SL community as a whole.

Possible Solution:
If more measures were taken against the botters, content theft could slowly but surely change.  Ban viewers that have security flaws that allow copybotting.  Ban scripts that allow copybotting.  Ban the thieves swiftly and consistently.

Esther Bailey Prata, Creator and Owner of LAGO DE PRATA

Problem:
Esther : The amount of scripts most avies unknowingly carry with them and create lag.

Possible solution: Better education on script usage.

Autumn Yap, Owner of Hiϛh V

Problem:
Autumn: I think it depends on how long they’ve been here. For newbies or people who are revisiting sl I think catching up to get their look updated. Maybe that is a big issue for everyone though, staying up to date with what’s going on and improving in world.

Possible solution:
Autumn: I think stores do a good job with their groups and subscribomatics keeping buyers aware of what’s new but so many groups and notifications are overwhelming. Not sure of how to fix such a thing but I think outlets like Second life Inventory and Seraphinsl.com are great resources.

Forever Tracei Moore, Owner of Foil

Problem:
Forever Tracei Moore : Trusting others with my most personal feelings, I’m normally guarded and only allow selective people in. However, I find that the people that hurt you the most are normally the ones you let in and know which choices of actions will cause you the most damage.

Possible Solution:
Forever Tracei Moore: There is no solution to this, it's a risk you take to love others and allow them to love you back, even if it’s just for a moment.

Addressing the Problems & Solutions

Lanai Jarrico: I’ve been in Second Life a very long time. I wouldn’t have survived it without knowing how to handle situations thrown in my path so I am offering you all some advice. From Lag, copybotting and the lack of men’s clothes to overwhelming subscribotic notices and emotional attacks, there are issues in Second life that could use some much needed attention. Overcoming these obstacles can be a challenge but there are solutions that can at least lessen the impact on how they will personally effect you. Lag is something that has been around since the beginning of virtual world. We can look at it as poor weather that we cannot control or we can do things to help reduce it such as lighten the load of scripts and prims on your land and or avatar and encourage your friends to do the same. Working together on this issue can make a difference.

Copybotting is just like having burglars in your rl neighborhoods or cities. We all know they are there but never know who they are or when they will strike. The best way to discourage thieves is to report them to authorities whenever you see suspicious activity.  But for the most part LL needs to step up to the plate and really do something about it.
The issue with men’s clothes seems to be parallel to the real world. Woman have always had it better when it comes to the assortment of fashion and accessories available. If more male designers fill the demand then the women would be the ones complaining. lol

Emotional Attacks have got to be one of the worst problems between people in Second Life. The best way to avoid personal attacks is to be selective with the information you share with others. Especially, things that might make you vulnerable to attacks the minute things go south. This doesn’t mean you are lying to someone you care about. You don’t have to share every detail of your life. Caring about someone is more about what you would do to protect them and show them they mean something to you. All the extra information is just sprinkles on the cake. The cake should be good on its own. The sprinkles don’t make it what it really is.
Last but not least, the overwhelming subscribomatics notices. This seems to be one of the biggest issues when it comes to mass spamming and bombardment of advertisement. I’m currently dealing with this issue myself.  It is definitely a violation of SL etiquette and needs to be stopped. Anyone who owns a subscribomatic should ask before adding people to the system. It is rude and inconsiderate. The best solution to this problem is contact them and ask them to please exclude you from the friend list spamming. If that doesn’t work make yourself appear offline to the violators or simply delete that person off your friend list. If they don’t talk to you any other time but to spam you, they aren’t really a friend anyway.
