Ding, ding, ding, round number two

Lab Chat returns on January 21st – with Ebbe Linden (aka Ebbe Altberg, CEO of Linden Lab) answering more of your questions!

Just to remind you, Lab Chat is the name of the new series that is aimed at providing Second Life users with the opportunity to have your questions put to Lab management and personnel.

The second episode of Lab Chat, recorded in front of a live audience and then broadcast on numerous streams including Second Life’s You Tube channel, AviewTV and SLArtist as well as being available in audio and written transcription.  Is being held at 10.30am SLT in the LEA Theater with seating available on LEA2, 3 and 4.

As with the first event, you are being invited to submit your questions via a Lab Chat forum thread. Questions to be asked will be selected by members of the Lab Chat production team. Those submitting selected questions will be invited to attend the recording of the session, and put their question directly to Ebbe in voice if they wish; otherwise questions will be asked the Lab Chat hosts, Saffia Widdershins and Jo Yardley.

How do you submit your questions?

You enter your questions on the special Linden Lab Forum which will be opened for questions shortly – LL will tell you when and where to go!

The questions to feature on the show will be chosen by the Lab Chat team (who are all residents). Don’t worry if your question isn’t chosen – as you may have a chance to ask it in the open session at the end (if there is time).

Those users whose questions are chosen will be invited to appear on the stage. They will be able to put their questions directly to Ebbe, in voice if they wish (or their questions will be read if they don’t use Voice/Skype).

The audience will be in the other three regions of the Theater. Voice relays mean that what is said will be audible on all four regions. There are also a set of text chat relays so that all text should be visible on all regions, and we have a team in the Theater who will be providing a voice-to-text service to let people know what is being said in voice. If there’s time, questions asked in text chat will also be put to Ebbe.

There will be a full transcription published later to accompany the video. Highlights will be broadcast on the Drax Radio Files show.

So get your questions in by Friday 15th January– and be at the show on the 21st.

Lab Chat Team: Draxtor Despres, Gentle Heron, LaPiscean Liberty, Marianne McCann, Elrik Merlin, Petlove Petshop, Inara Pey, Secret Rage, Aisling Sinclair, Arduenn Schwartzman, Lorin Tone, DevinVaughn, Saffia Widdershins, and Jo Yardley.

"HELP! I’m all meshed up” - Dean Lawson reporting

A guide to adding mesh clothes and understanding alpha layers.

As someone who is new to Second Life I am constantly learning how to do things as basic as sitting in chairs, unpacking boxed items and understanding why some scripts work in some sims and not in others. To assist me in my Second Life adventures I’ve found many helpful people who have given me the benefit of their advice and, on occasions when there is no one to offer support, there is a surprising amount of information to be found on websites such as Second Life wiki, Youtube tutorials and the Second Life Forums. So rather than rely entirely on my own limited experience to explain how alpha layers work, I will offer quotes from more experienced SL residents to describe the process of using multiple mesh and alpha layers.

For those who are newer to Second Life than myself, I will give a brief explanation of what mesh and alpha layers are. There are three types of clothes in second life, the first is usually called “system clothes” which are represented in your inventory as shirt and pants icons. System clothes appear to be "painted" onto your avatar and don’t have the same realistic quality as the other two types. The second type of clothing is called “Prim” and is represented in your inventory as a yellow cube. Prim clothes are usually made from multiple prims linked together which sometimes appears more realistic than system clothes but, because it is composed of several parts, it can sometimes cause lag. The third type of clothing is called “Mesh” and is also represented in your inventory as a cube.

Unlike system clothes Mesh is more realistic in the way it fits on your avatar and, unlike prim clothing, mesh does not generate lag, so it would appear that Mesh is the best choice of the three. However when mesh clothes are worn, sometimes, it does not fit perfectly and parts of your avatar will show through the clothes. So, if your avatar has a large posterior and you put on a pair of mesh skinny jeans, your backside will show through the jeans. One way to deal with this problem is to readjust your avatar's shape to fit the clothes however, for mesh clothing designers, a more convenient solution was to create an alpha layer, which makes parts of your avatar invisible.

Usually when a mesh outfit is purchased, an alpha layer that fits the outfit is included, however this is not always the case, especially with gift and discount items. Problems with alpha layers also occur when clothes purchased separately are mixed together to create a unique ensemble. This is when it becomes necessary to use multiple alpha layers and you will need to know how to “add” instead of wear.

When Second Life resident Daika Andel posted the question "How do i wear alpha layers together” in the SL Forums back in November 2012,  Charlotte Caxton replied; "When you want to wear more than one of something, right click and choose add instead of wear. Some older viewers do not support this feature. You can wear up to five layers at once of each layer, ie 5 shirt layers, and 5 tattoo layers and 5 alpha layers etc. Multiple layers of some tattoo layers occasionally cause issues sometimes for some people.”

When posed a similar question LoriLexa replied; "You need to choose ADD    If you choose WEAR, it will replace the other layer. If you choose ADD it will allow you to wear multiple layers without replacing them. The same holds true for objects and tattoo layers. For example: If you want to wear a tattoo on your upper arm and another tattoo layer for your eyeshadow, you must wear the first and ADD the rest or just ADD all of them. Same with rings, if you have 3 different rings that you want to wear to your right hand, you just choose ADD for all of them. Same for hats over hair. If both objects are defaulted to wear on your head, you ADD them both so one does not remove/replace the other. etc...

So it seems that by "ADDing" mesh, prim, system and alphas layers you can create your own unique Second Life ensembles and costumes. So much for putting on your pants one leg at a time.

A Journey into Roissy by MK (monkeyking2011)

Come with me as we join MK on "A Journey into Roissy: My time at Cafe LaPe'rouse @ Austin, a Second Life sim".

The novel The Story of O by French author Anne Desclos (writing under the pen name Pauline Réage) is a tale of female submission. It involves a beautiful Parisian fashion photographer named O, who is taught to be constantly available for oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse, offering herself to any male who belongs to the same secret society as her lover.

The novel has spawned various movies and sequels, and has also been the basis for several sims and groups in Second Life. The first successful English-speaking Story of O sim in Second Life was founded in August 2007 by Megan Fabre and Marian Wildcat, and this sim passed from owner to owner for a while, before being led by Slint Dezno and closing in 2014. All of the other English-language Roissy areas were derived in one way or another from this original sim, either as a direct descendant or as splinter groups. Roissy Val d'Oise (VDO) opened in 2012, and has been led throughout by Rene (geir Resident), while Roissy-en-France (ReF) was founded in late 2014 by Josephine Ambrose Roux and is based on the life of O as portrayed in the second book, "Le Retour à Roissy" (The Return to Roissy).

The longest running Roissy sim is Cafe LaPe'rouse @ Austin, which was founded in September 2008 by Ratzu Darkstone, and which celebrated its 7th anniversary in September 2015. This article will focus on the organization and history of Cafe LaPe'rouse @ Austin as I know it, as well as my own personal experiences in the sim.

Cafe LaPe'rouse @ Austin sprawls on a full region of 65,536 m², and first time visitors will be amazed at the diversity of environments and settings within that area. Unlike the other Roissy sims, there is no unifying architectural or ecological theme that dominates throughout the entire space. Instead, Austin boasts an impressive variety of venues and landscapes that just beg to be explored by any intrepid Second Life explorer, from a huge tree house perched high atop a magnificent botanical specimen to blue caverns hidden deep underground; from a Japanese-themed Tea Room to a secret place that features erotic depictions of Alice in Wonderland; from a hilltop venue dedicated to sexy cowgirls to an Arabian style bed perched high atop a hill; to name just a few of the many fascinating areas in the sim.

The region itself is dominated by the Chateau. This sits in the center like a regal queen surveying her domain and is off limits to visitors except during special events, and almost all socializing takes place in the southwest quadrant of the region, where the Cafe, stores, and discussion and permanent dance areas are located. A red and gold train circumnavigates the parcel and provides a leisurely way for visitors to see some of the major features and geography of Austin.

The group is structured rather rigidly and along strictly maledom lines, and is dedicated to exploring domination and submission in the context of the Story of O. The intended goal is to provide training for the girls in their total submission, and produce Masters who are comfortable and powerful in their domination and expert in roleplay, and it is not an exaggeration to state that the regimen in Austin is most likely the most rigorous and comprehensive in all of Second Life. Both males and females are assigned two mentors and have to go through a series of levels in their training, culminating in the O-girl status in girls and the Master tag for Doms. Areas of study include Austin Culture, Bondage and control, Discipline and S/M, Safety, Scening and protocols, and Dominance and submission. Due to the somewhat long and arduous training required, as well as the strict application procedures that weed out people who either cannot function well socially with the group or whose dedication is suspect, the attainment of the O-girl and Master tags in Austin is something to be celebrated and treasured.

There have been some controversial aspects to the sim as well, at least to some people. Voice verification and IP address checking of applicants ensures that deception will not be a problem, but the use of software at one time to eliminate the proliferation of alts in the sim created some dissent from outsiders. The sharing of the girls at some point during their training among all the Masters also raises some eyebrows from those outside the group. However, Ratzu notes that Austin is first and foremost a D/s group where the Master-girl relationship is valued above all else, and that the sharing of the girls "is first for their growth and secondly for our pleasure. The poly aspect serves to grow our girls and Masters by allowing us to overcome our own insecurities, jealousy, learn to trust and become trustworthy."

I entered this culture that was based on strict protocols and rules for its members, but one situated in a rather whimsical physical environment, when I had my first full experience with Austin in July 29, 2014. I had met my submissive Linda (LB burnstein) just two weeks earlier, and she had  invited me to join in a Newbie dance being held at the sim. By chance, the host of that event was Melinda Nyn, someone who I would later mentor and take into my protection, and she took the first picture of me and Linda as a couple. I enjoyed the dance, and found the people warm and welcoming, an opinion that did not change when I later participated in several other events at Austin.  I even participated in my first Second Life auction during the 6th Anniversary celebrations, when I won a two hour date with Linda by mortgaging a kidney and a couple of other internal organs that will hopefully not be missed.
In the year since I have come to know the sim and its inhabitants well, and we have become ardent supporters of Austin and its events. We both like voicing and the Tuesday and Friday Voice Chats at the Austin Starbucks is a regular haunt of ours. In addition, Austin holds sit-down discussions where the topics range from theories about BDSM and D/s; to talks about the Story of O; to the more prosaic elements of D/s play such as roleplay, limits, and safewords. It also holds the usual dances which are a common staple of most sims in Second Life, but supplements these with events such as Movie/TV Trivia games, sex board games, a weekly Toy Chest Game, as well as the Undressed or Bound quiz where submissives are given the choice of being bound or removing some article of clothing. Finally, the Austin Revue produces semi-regular plays in Austin's Speakeasy Theater that examine D/s and BDSM concepts, and the troupe and production are second to none in Second Life.

I have also come to love the sim builds. Early on, I had Linda assemble a collection of landmarks of some of the more notable spots in the sim as part of an assignment. She came back with more than twenty LMs, and I have spent quite a bit of time exploring them, marvelling at some of the exquisite builds. All were designed by Ratzu, many times in consultation with the girls, but out of all the myriad thematic wonders of the sim, I would have to say that the Submission Gallery of Austin is by far the most impressive and arguably one of the most important features of the sim.

Austin has what is probably the largest collection of captioned D/s artwork in Second Life. Housed in three floors in the main building and a further six floors in a connected annex, visitors can spend literally hours in the Austin Submission Gallery gazing at the row upon row of images on the walls of the gallery, each with some text included on it about BDSM or Domination and submission. It is a learning tool for D/s practitioners that cannot be found anywhere else in SL, and Ratzu regularly hosts discussion tours of the gallery for members and visitors alike, wherein a participant can select an image and the accompanying text and elaborate on his or her thoughts about it.

In the end, it would not be an exaggeration to say that both my girl Linda and I have come to consider Austin our second home. We even have our favorite spots on the region, with Linda picking a hill that overlooks most of the sim as a frequent spot for meditation, while I like spending time in the refined elegance of the Austin library, ensconced on a luxuriant leather chair among the book-lined shelves. We are comfortable with the kind members of the group, and look forward to getting to know new friends and acquaintances in the future.

THE GRAND OPENING OF THE BOWL WAS A SMASH HIT!
The Gala Grand Opening of The Bowl at The Hollywood Ballroom in Second Life was an amazing event this last Saturday night. This fabulous event stared Second Life’s premier vocalist, The Pink Vampire. She performed 11 new songs that she prepared just for that event. Over 100 people were in attendance though the night; at one point there were 85 happy fans on the region.

The finale was something to behold. The Pink Vampire sang “Hooray for Hollywood” and was joined by choreographer Shadow Tarber and her dance troop, who stunned the crowd with an amazing dance number, as fireworks blazed around the stage and venue.
The Bowl is the new home for The Pink Vampire every Saturday night. It is rumored that her fans have nicknamed the place, “The Pink Pavilion” for Saturdays.
Samual WetherbyI think The Hollywood Bowl will be a nice asset to the Second Life entertainment lineup of Big Venues and Grand Events to come!

Have You Ever Experienced Discrimination in SL?- Dragonmaster Mistwalker Reporting

We all know that discrimination exists in real life. Be it sex, age, racial, gender or religious discrimination a lot of people have faced discrimination in real life. based on this fact i thought id delve in and find out if discrimination exists in our virtual world.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): have you ever experienced discrimination in second life?

Mistress Sex Kitten Mistwalker (becca.drascol): Yes I have. Once I went to a club and had my "escort" tag on from my own club. Without warning and without time to take the tag off I was ejected and banned. Also as a club co owner I have a hard time finding work, most all places automatically judge, without knowing me that I am out to poach staff.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): how does this effect you?

Mistress Sex Kitten Mistwalker (becca.drascol): The tag thing made me feel like people don't take time they have their finger on the eject and don't care about lag, or a person like me simply forgetting. I almost always go to no tag or a neutral one when i hop around SL to respect other venues. Assuming that as a co owner of a club I am out to poach staff, used to hurt. I felt like I was placed in a category of "everyone else," and that I am uncaring and cold. When in truth I like to see venues of all kinds survive and like to help others.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): have you ever experienced discrimination in second life?

Hell's Jester (damnedfool): I've found a few that don't like my furry form but I don't let that bother me.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): ty for your time

Hell's Jester (damnedfool): No problem.

Dragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): have you ever experienced discrimination in second life?

Ferarri Canucci ™ (ferarri.carissa):  yes i have once or twice.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): how did it affect you?

Ferarri Canucci ™ (ferarri.carissa): well it did hurt a little but they are nothing to me so i don't let it affect me.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): thank you for your time
Ferarri Canucci ™ (ferarri.carissa): no worries

Dragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): have you ever experienced discrimination in second life?

Petra Amare (petravoorst): Yes I have unfortunately. You know my profile is open about who I am. And that does trigger some people to nasty comments.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): how does that affect you?

Petra Amare (petravoorst):  Well...mostly not ...since SL has a capable mute list..but deep inside..yeah...it does hurt. Weird enough..the worst hurt.. Was when I was "done"....and I planned to be a full girl in SL ...at Kitty's. Dancing there as girl..with 5 or 6 others..all shemale avatars.

Me being only girl..and there were 2 guests tipping them over and over again...none to me. It wasn't the money...but the meaning going out from that. Finally being myself..and then not be accepted. Hurt enough to quit SL for a few months. SL is largely occupied with Americans. Nothing wrong with that..smiles..don't get me wrong. But large parts of USA being like I am is just not accepted. Looked upon as crazy...dirty. Lot of them take that attitude in here. Europeans are way more open about it And FOR it. Has to do with religion...upbringing..all that And FOR it.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): do you think people judged more before or after you changed to playing as a female?

Petra Amare (petravoorst): After. In my previous life I was posing as full female. and was convincing obviously. But anyways..people now can read about me..and if they ask about it..whatever what..I answer openly. I wish more people in SL would come out for their true feelings, whatever they are..and more would accept that. That is the main reason behind my profile. I want people to ask...and maybe..just maybe..grow a bit more understanding.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): have you ever experienced discrimination in second life?

Rayne Meisha Howe (vividdreamz): I have, for the way I live the lifestyles I live. Multiple times actually.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): how did that affect you?

Rayne Meisha Howe (vividdreamz): It shut me out mostly of a lifestyle I once lived on here... I no longer live it, and if I do I keep it very secrecy.. And I feel ashamed of the lifestyle to live it.

Ðragon Mistwalker (dragonmaster.mistwalker): thank you for your time

Rayne Meisha Howe (vividdreamz): You're very welcome

So in closing yes Second Life just the same as our real life discrimination exists. Just in putting together this article one of the people I approached asked what they could do for me a better wardrobe or a better looking wife. This is not the first time I myself have encountered discrimination.

My wish for this article is it gives people pause to think. If we put aside petty closed minds and prejudices not just in sl but rl too our virtual world and the rl would be better places.

If you have experienced discrimination in Second Life, share your story in the comment box below.

"To Be A More Awesome Me” - Dean Lawson reporting

A review of Second Life New Year’s Resolutions

As part of the process of evolution I believe that human beings possess an innate instinct to improve. This is never more apparent than in the age old tradition of making the New Year’s Resolutions. As coming up with realistic resolutions has never been easy for me, (my 2015 resolution to conquer the world ended as a total disaster), so I decided to conduct a survey of Second Life residents to hopefully find some examples of slightly more realistic resolutions for 2016.

When asked about her New Year’s resolution, Second Life artist Andressa DePrims answered; “I would like to dedicate 2016 to becoming a better person, a wiser soul and a gentler spirit, basically I want to be a more awesome me."

Thea Dreem replied; "My New Year's Resolution for 2016 is to curb my impulse buying habit in SecondLife! I have things in my inventory that I fell in love with at first site and before I even took a moment to make sure it would meet my needs, fit my mesh, prim count, permissions, ANYTHING, I pressed that BUY button and lived to regret it. I need to cultivate patience in my shopping habits. While I'm at it, I should stick to a budget too. I really should. I probably won’t."

Serenitee Bliss wrote; "When asked about New Year's resolutions, I think of all the usual things. Take better care of myself, be more frugal, learn a new hobby, etc.  In the years I have made resolutions, they ended up becoming something that felt like a chore thus making me not want to do them. I stopped making them. I recently had a conversation with a friend though, who spoke of their resolution for this new year.  It was simply to do one thing positive each day, be it something little or big.  I thought about the holidays and how often we save doing thoughtful things for those "special" times. I'm breaking my rule about no resolutions this year by making a resolution to use the entire year to show others kindness and not limit those positive words to only the calendar oriented occasions. Thank you Dean for asking me to be part of this article.  It made me stop and think about how I can spruce up my new year!"

When asked about his resolution, Second Life Resident Vlad Rhapsody stated; “... not to eat the mail man...again....Master gets so mad when i do that"

Vęŋǫŗą Ӎąɠįç (venora.magic) the Owner Of Dreamland Designs replied; “...Health is one of my biggest resolutions eat better drink more water and excercise..those would be the main resolutions i have for 2016..For my buisness i would say im totally happy i have the best customers in sl who have stuck with me through all the years. my resolution would be to be able to make many more creations and make people happy with them :-)"

Isabelle Sperber (isabelle.torok) the Creator  & Owner of IMMORTALS Avatars stated; "To be honest my new years resolution is to be able to learn new programs that will take my creativity to the next level and put me in a place where I feel artistically satisfied to my complete potential. :)"

The CEO and Editor in Chief of the SL Enquirer, Lanai Jarrico wrote; "my resolution is to improve on my goals for rl and SL and conquer some fears that I have so they don't hold me back"

Second Life Resident infinite808 expressed a desire to see the world when she answered; "Make more time for traveling by going to 3 different countries this year. Peru, Armenia and Mexico”, while New Resident KaylaMae09 left me wondering if I was being offered an invitation when she typed; "Well ... im going to do more excirsisexxxx"

This just in from the Hollywood Investigator –

Dateline – Hollywood, CA
THE GRAND OPENING OF THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL IN SL!
The Gala Grand Opening of The Hollywood Bowl in Second Life is set for January 2nd at 7pm, SLT. This fabulous event will star Second Life’s premier vocalist, The Pink Vampire. She will be performing 11 new songs that she has prepared just for this event; that is almost 3/4 of her show. There will be dance numbers choreographed by the amazing and talented Shadow Tarber. We also expect the rumors about a spectacular pyrotechnics show are true, too (I just love fireworks).
The owner of The Hollywood Ballroom, Origen Resident, was asked about opening this venue, “Why here and why now?” Origen commented, “The Pink Vampire forced my hand. The crowds coming to her shows are so big, The Hollywood Ballroom simply can’t hold them anymore. During her last show, we had to turn people away. So, we set up a make shift sound system outside the ballroom and people were dancing on Hollywood Blvd. With The Hollywood Bowl we have room for everyone who wants to attend her performance and many other performances that will be held there.”
This is a special event and invitations are being sent out to all of the A-listers in town. The Paparazzi is sure to be sneaking around (I know, I’m sending them), so wear your best formal and cocktail attire; you want to look good for our society page.
