The Art of Being Seen: Tips for Creatives to Turn Passion into Pay- Hannah Simpson reporting...

It’s a strange, beautiful thing—this dream of making a living doing what you love. You’ve got the vision, the talent, the drive, but it feels like you’re shouting into the void. Between algorithms, saturated markets, and the ever-shifting tides of “what’s hot,” breaking through can feel almost mythical. But the truth is, getting discovered isn’t just about being lucky—it’s about being strategic, authentic, and relentlessly visible in all the right ways.

Nurture the Work Before You Market It

Before you even think about exposure, you’ve got to be making something worth discovering. Too many creatives jump into self-promotion with half-baked work, hoping to ride the hype train before they’ve built the engine. The reality is, nobody sticks around for a spark if there's no flame behind it. So put in your hours, hone your voice, and make sure the thing you’re offering is something you’re deeply proud of—even if no one sees it yet.

Think Small to Grow Big

Everyone wants that viral moment, but often it's the tight-knit circles that turn into your strongest foundation. Instead of trying to go global out the gate, focus on finding your micro-audience—the 50 people who really get what you do. Engage with them like they matter, and they’ll do more for your growth than a thousand anonymous likes. Grassroots doesn’t sound sexy, but it’s the reason so many thriving artists have staying power.

Show Up Where the Eyes Already Are

You can’t wait for people to stumble across your work—you’ve got to put it in their path. That means showing up consistently on platforms where your people already hang out. But don’t just post and ghost. Share behind-the-scenes moments, process shots, unfinished thoughts—let people into the realness of your journey. When you stop treating social media like a megaphone and start treating it like a studio open house, the energy shifts.

Make Collaborations, Not Just Content

One of the most underrated ways to get discovered is by riding someone else’s wave—ethically, of course. Collaborate with other creatives who inspire you, even if they’re not in your lane. Musicians can team up with visual artists; illustrators can join forces with poets. Every collaboration expands your reach, but more importantly, it builds a web of shared community and support that can’t be bought or faked.

Treat Your Resume Like a Living Document

Just like your art, your resume should never sit still. Every new skill you sharpen, gig you land, or project you finish deserves a place in that document—it’s not about bragging, it’s about being ready when your moment comes. Think of it as part of your creative toolkit, something that reflects who you are right now, not who you were two years ago. Locking it down as a PDF keeps everything clean and consistent, and with a PDF editor for document management, you can tweak it anytime without having to wrestle with messy file conversions.

Turn Your DMs into Doorways

Networking doesn’t have to be transactional or sleazy. Sometimes it’s just about saying, “Hey, I love what you’re doing.” Reach out to people you admire, not to ask for something, but to start a real conversation. Show genuine interest. Respond thoughtfully. Be a fan first. You’d be shocked how many gigs, features, and long-term partnerships start with a single kind message.

Don’t Just Post—Pitch

There’s a big difference between hoping to be found and actively putting yourself in front of decision-makers. Get clear on where you want your work to live—magazines, blogs, playlists, galleries, festivals—and send those people a well-crafted pitch. Yes, you’ll get ignored sometimes. But if you stay sharp and professional, you’re not bothering them—you’re making their job easier by showing them someone worth featuring. That someone’s you.

Protect Your Magic with Patience

In all the hustle to get noticed, you’ve got to be careful not to let the pursuit of attention dilute the soul of your work. Not everything has to be optimized or marketable. Give yourself room to play, to make things that don’t perform well, to grow quietly before you bloom loudly. Being discovered isn’t always about being louder—it’s about being undeniable. And that takes time. Don’t rush your becoming.

The journey to making a living as a creative isn’t linear, and it sure isn’t always fair. But if you approach it like a craft in itself—something you study, practice, and refine—you’ll start to see shifts. The more you treat visibility not as a prize to be won, but as a process to participate in, the more you’ll unlock doors that once felt bolted shut. So keep making. Keep showing up. Keep building your world until the right people can’t ignore it.

Exploring Where To Explore With Expedition Central - Sheristrawberri reporting

Second Life is made up of hundreds of beautiful and interesting sims and a lot of SL citizens enjoy taking the time to explore some of them. But where can someone go in this virtual world to find places to explore? Perhaps you should try visiting Expedition Central.

"Expedition Central has a long history in Second Life. With a huge collection of landmarks, it’s a place for both those new to SL as well as the experienced wanderers. Actually, there are two EC locations," said Severn Laryukov, the current caretaker of what is an epic undertaking.

EC is something of a clearing house for cool and interesting landmarks. They are posted on the walls of the group’s two clubhouse buildings. The larger, main location is in Chilbo with a smaller, more curated clubhouse at Helping Haven Gateway.

The project was the passion of Cyrus Hush. He started collecting LMs in the early 2000s. He first simply shared locations he found interesting with friends on note cards. Deciding to share further, he created the Expedition Central group in order to better distribute his LMs and to allow for discussion with members.

From there he created what he called the clubhouse and began posting the LMs, along with a brief description, for people to take and explore.

In RL Cyrus was an educator and had even been given the highest award by Virtual Education Journal which dedicated an entire issue to him.

Sadly, Cyrus passed away in 2016 and his longtime friend, Josain Zsun, took over the reins of EC. Like Cyrus, Josain was a RL educator and avid SL explorer.

Josain had met Cyrus in 2009. Cyrus was giving tours of SL to educators as part of the International Society for Technology in Education. The two bonded over mutual interests and Josain became very active in EC.

The passing of Cyrus created a major problem for EC. His account became inaccessible and so the clubhouses and their wealth of LMs were lost.

Josain took on the task of rebuilding and re-stocking the clubhouses. By the time he had them both back up and working, Josain estimated that there were about 1000 LMs available for avid explorers.

Last year Josain realized that he needed to step away as maintaining EC had become too much work. Finding someone to take over, though, didn't take very long.

"I met Josain while wandering back in 2022," said Severn. "I became sort of a 'field reporter', finding new locations and sharing them with Josain so he could add them to EC. I do love exploring and this was a great way to share my passion with other people. Josain decided to retire from managing EC at the end of 2024 and was looking for someone to take over as curator. I had more than two years invested in building it up so I decided to volunteer."

With the two clubhouse locations in place, the main challenge for Severn is to keep things running smoothly by adding new LMs of interest and weeding out those that have become "dead links." Don't think that isn't a lot of work.

"There are a little over a thousand landmarks at the main Chilbo location, and about half that many at the Helping Haven location. Plenty to keep you busy exploring," said Severn.

While Severn will find new locations to add to the clubhouses herself, she also relies on others, especially members of the EC group, to send her suggestions.

"I absolutely love it when people send me LMs to new locations they found, or even old ones I didn't know about. They can drop me the LM in an IM, or I have mailboxes setup at each location where they can send me LMs or questions. I post almost any location that looks interesting. I don't tend to post purely commercial or main store locations, however there are plenty of store locations that have a nice ambiance, or a garden, or a city, that are worth exploring. They definitely get added," she pointed out.

"As you know, sims disappear from SL. Some stay around for a long time, and others disappear suddenly. Checking and cleaning up 'dead links' is quite time consuming, so I tend to tackle one wall at a time. I have to visit each location to see if it's still there. If it’s not there I also do some searching, because sometimes a destination just moves, and is not actually gone. For the ones that are really gone I remove them from EC and replace them with a blank plaque. The upside is that sometimes when I'm looking for a missing destination, I actually discover a new one, and of course add it to EC," said Severn.

While the vast number of LMs in the clubhouses make sorting them into categories quite difficult, people can always find seasonal locations on the walls by the entrances. These will change with the seasons but make it easy for people to find among the mass of options.

Severn said that she has her favorite types of sims, particularly those with interesting nature or urban builds. But being a fan of all types of exploring she encourages everyone to get out and find what interests them.

"Enjoy your rambling, and please do share locations that you love," she added.

Travel & Adventure is excited to announce its latest offering - "Travel Speed Dating".  It will be a little different than its RL counterpart where you move from chair to chair to talk with a different person every six minutes.  Instead, in this SL version of the popular activity, a group of singles will take a trip together, perhaps a flight, an ocean cruise, or a train trip.  During the trip, the passengers will be able to talk with one another, get to know each other, and either exchange friend requests or say goodbye when the plane lands or the ship reaches port.  Of course, passengers will be placed on different trips based upon their gender and their gender preference for the singles they would like to meet.  There can also be different trips based upon special interests or lifestyle choices, such as, for example, dominants and submissives who would like to meet each other. So, take a chance on this innovative new way to meet people.  Join the Travel & Adventure group and then contact Fawn Cobalt to provide your dating profile and schedule a speed dating trip.

INTERVIEW WITH MOTHER GOOSE- Be careful what you ask for… - Lanai Jarrico reporting…

Mother’s Day is a time of year when we pay our respects to our beloved mother or the woman who stood in our egg donor's place and taught us about the world. Either you show up with a fist full of flowers and a card, take Momma out to Denny’s for the all-day breakfast value menu deal, or you sit back and think of the fond memories you had with her, longing for a hug.

If you are a mother yourself, the day should be all about you. If you want to lie in bed and have someone tend to you for a change. Do you.

If you want to get your hair and nails done only for it to last a couple of days before you are back to lookin all disheveled and worn down from motherhood. Do what you gotta do.

If you want to hop in your car and disappear for a couple of hours to get your well deserved me time. I say, have at it. It’s your day and noone should be telling you what to do!

I’m a proud mother of two, to some others I’m just a rude ass motherf*cker. Either way, I paid my dues. My kids are all grown up, educated with degrees and up outta my house, cooking for themselves, washing their clothes, and handling their own dang business. They know they are loved but they also know when to let momma do her own thing without meddling all up in her business and being a pain in the ass. Those days are over.

So, back to Mother’s Day, I thought long and hard about the famous moms I wanted to interview this year. After asking several different ones who didn’t have time, for one sad reason or another, I settled with Mother Goose. This mother has been around for ages and is responsible for many of the nursery rhymes we learned as kids that don’t make any sense today.

Interview with Mother Goose

Lanai: Hi Mother Goose, thank you for taking the time to chat with me here at the Mad Hatters Tea room about this very special holiday.  You haven’t aged one bit! Can you share with our readers what Mother’s Day means to you and how it has changed over the years?

Mother Goose: Hey Lanai, thank you you dear sweet child.  Life Second keeps me forever young.  It is an honor to be interviewed by you. You are one of the few mothers I can say did a good job raising your offspring. I hear one of them is a Therapist and the other is a professional video game creator!

Lanai: Thank you, Mother Goose. Yes, that is true. Both are a reflection of me. A mental case that loves virtual reality and gaming. Lol back to the previous questions.

Mother Goose: I never said you were Mother of the year, but you managed to pull it off, raising some amazing kids that actually know my nursery rhymes! Anyway, These new age tech moms are pathetic. They don’t even bother to pass long nursery rhymes to their kids. They hand them an iPad and let them play games as a free babysitting service so these baby makers have more time to post filtered selfies, glue on those ridiculous eyelashes, and fight with other moms on Facebook. I don’t even want to go on about all the dating sites they go on, looking for their next baby daddies.

We are living in a time where someone has to say it how they see it instead of ignoring what’s going on. Sorry not sorry. Their asses should be in parenting classes for Mother’s day.

Lanai: You sure keep it real. I have to agree with all of that but one thing really sticks out to me that I need to comment on. What the hell is going on with those thick ass lashes that seem to be a part of a beauty routine from some other planet.

 Anyway,

Mother Goose: I can tell you are an empty nester. Eyelashes were the only thing you had a comment about from my previous statement. That reminds me of a nursery rhyme!

“Tweedledum and Tweedledee Agreed to have a battle; For Tweedledum said Tweedledee Had spoiled his nice new rattle. Just then flew down a monstrous crow,  As black as a tar-barrel;

Which frightened both the heroes so, They quite forgot their quarrel”

Lanai: Sorry? *confused stare*  Ummm ok then. Not sure what that's got to do with the price of tea in China….  Anyway. You are right about the absentee moms who wonder where the years have gone and get all mad when their kids grow up to resent them and show zero respect.

Mother Goose: MMhmmm. So, How do you plan on spending Mother’s Day?

Lanai: I'd love for my kids to travel to see me, but in reality, they are adulting and have responsibilities. One lives in Florida, and the other is about an hour and a half from me.  I’ll be happy with phone calls If I don’t get surprised, I may catch up on some sleep and snuggle with my cat. Even empty nesters have me time.

Mother Goose: Well, if it makes you feel better, you are a cat mom, and I’m sure he is needy. That reminds me of a nursery rhyme!  “ And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon

Little boy blue and the man in the moon "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when

We'll get together then, you know we'll have a good time then"

Lanai: Ummmm… What the hell? That's not a nursery rhyme. It's lyrics to a song by Harry Chapin…

Mother Goose: Oh, right.  Well, here’s a good one I think you will like. “Hey diddle diddle, The cat and the fiddle,The cow jumped over the moon; The little dog laughedTo see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon”.

Lanai: Ok , can you stop with the nursery rhymes? It’s making me feel very uncomfortable.

Mother Goose: I’m sorry, hunny, I just thought they would make you happy. All my kids loved them. The kid songs out today, like Baby Shark, not to mention that awful Barney. These characters are really frightening and upsetting to me.

Lanai: I’m a grown up remember? I’m not into that stuff either…  So, what are your plans for Mother’s Day?

Mother Goose: My apologies. For Mother’s Day, I plan on publishing a new series of Nursery rhymes that make more sense in this day and age. Would you like to hear one?

Lanai: FFS. Dear goodness. I’ll wait for a published copy like everyone else.

Mother Goose: Are you sure?

Lanai: Yes, thank you. I think we are done with this interview. Thanks again…

Mother Goose: Oh! Before we part ways I must share one last special rhyme with you. Everybody have you heard? “Mock (yeah) Ing (yeah) Bird (yeah) Yeah (Oh yeah) He's gonna buy me a mockingbird And if that mockingbird don't sing He's gonna but me a diamond ring And if that diamond ring won't shine Surely break this heart of mine And that's why I keep on tellin' everybody. Say yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh He's gonna buy me some peace of mind And if that peace of mind don't stay I'm gonna find myself a better way And if that better way ain't so I'll ride with the tide and go with the flow And that's why I keep on shoutin' in your ear Say yeah, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, oh”

Lanai: WTF lady?

Mother Goose: Bye, bye, goodbye

Bye, bye, bye, bye, goodbye. I can clap my hands. I can stamp my feet. I can clap my hands. I can stamp my feet. Bye, bye, goodbye Bye, bye, bye, bye, goodbye Bye, bye, goodbye Bye, bye, bye, bye, goodbye Goodbye!

Lanai: What kinda shit?  Ok… I don’t know what’s in your tea, but I gotta go. *speed walks away and doesn’t look back*

Happy Mother’s Day, ya’ll!

Special thanks to aquarius denimore
