SL ARTS & LITERATURE: A Holiday Guide to Literature and Stories of All Kinds

Tis the season! Time for creative forces of the Virtual World to don their festive apparel, and let fly with holiday cheer. Some events have already taken place. Some events, like the Avatar Repertory Theatre’s holiday offering, have already begun. A bit of holiday luck for you, many of these events have multiple showings! In between the virtual holiday shopping, and the treasure hunts for festive freebies, add as many of these events as you can stuff in a stocking to your “Must Do” list through New Year’s Day:

Thursday, December 9th @ 7pm SLT: "An Irish Christmas" with Shandon Loring
Tonight a stocking full of Christmas surprises from John B. Keane. Drawing on the rich folk culture of Ireland, tonight's tales humorously present the holiday dreams and everyday shortcomings of ordinary country people during the Christmas season. Friday, December 10th through Sunday, January 2nd : Yule Festival – By the Wild Fox Rovers
All life flows from the sun, In barren winter, Life begins a new, Hope is eternal.
To celebrate Yule, The Wild Fox Rover group is sponsoring several literary readings and the creation of a SL anthology of submitted work—original poetry, short shorts and essays that celebrate this season. The poetry recital of popular works will be streamed. The open mic sessions will use voice chat. The event is free for all, and it may include mature content if part of the work. The Third Annual Presentation of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol
Saturday, December 11th at 7pm
Tuesday, December 14th at 7pm at the Seanchai Library
Sunday, December 19th at 3pm at the Frosty Fruit Islands
Shandon Loring will reprise his role as “Ebeneezer Scrooge”, the cold-hearted, tight fisted, greedy man, who despises all things which promote happiness, the Holidays most specifically. Elder Priestman will once more lend his Southern warmth to the story as “Bob Crathchit,” Scrooge’s underpaid clerk and father of Tiny Tim. The rest of the ensemble will include Aoife Lorefield, Derry McMahon, Marian Dragovar, Bear Silvershade, Spyot Demina and Caledonia Skytower in a presentation adapted, directed and in a setting created by Aoife Lorefield. Presented in voice and free, with donations are accepted to support Community Virtual Libraries.

Avatar Repertory Theater invites you to celebrate the essence of the season with a collection of short plays written and performed by A.R.T. members. Spilling the bounty of talent that is A.R.T. onto the stage we will explore the music, stories and indulgence of the Christmas holiday. We'll supply stories of all types, some sleeping bags, and lots of nice food, wine, cheese and hot cocoa. All stories in voice, with lots of laughs, and benefiting the Community Virtual Libraries.

Monday, December 27th @ 3pm: All Star Sounds of Poems Festive Special
As a festive special, the 22 regular performers from the Sounds of Poems weekly poetry show will take turns to read some of their favorite poems. Sounds of Poems has been presented weekly for nearly 4 years, and usually 2 performers per week read poems for the audience. Saturday, January 1, 2011 @ 6am: Poet’s Plunder – Happy New Year!
Start your new year off right! The Poets' Plunder is a voice open-mic event based around poems about pirates, cats, love and exploring all styles of poetry. This week we will feature poetry associated with new beginnings appropriate for the New Year. This event is hosted by the Pirate Neko Poet Klannex Northmead and every week the best original poet as voted for by the audience wins a gem. These awards are cumulative and three gems entitles the poet to a share of the prize booty (often 10 000 linden). The prize payout is matched by a donation to wateraid.org.
