SL ARTS & LITERATURE: A Holiday Guide to Literature and Stories of All Kinds

Tis the season! Time for creative forces of the Virtual World to don their festive apparel, and let fly with holiday cheer. Some events have already taken place. Some events, like the Avatar Repertory Theatre’s holiday offering, have already begun. A bit of holiday luck for you, many of these events have multiple showings! In between the virtual holiday shopping, and the treasure hunts for festive freebies, add as many of these events as you can stuff in a stocking to your “Must Do” list through New Year’s Day:

Thursday, December 9th @ 7pm SLT: "An Irish Christmas" with Shandon Loring
Tonight a stocking full of Christmas surprises from John B. Keane. Drawing on the rich folk culture of Ireland, tonight's tales humorously present the holiday dreams and everyday shortcomings of ordinary country people during the Christmas season. Friday, December 10th through Sunday, January 2nd : Yule Festival – By the Wild Fox Rovers
All life flows from the sun, In barren winter, Life begins a new, Hope is eternal.
To celebrate Yule, The Wild Fox Rover group is sponsoring several literary readings and the creation of a SL anthology of submitted work—original poetry, short shorts and essays that celebrate this season. The poetry recital of popular works will be streamed. The open mic sessions will use voice chat. The event is free for all, and it may include mature content if part of the work. Friday, December 10 @ 7pm SLT: “Who Is Santa Claus?” Exhibit Opening with Stories
Join Caledonia Skytower, Shandon Loring and Derry McMahon as they open the new exhibit "Who is Santa Claus?":an exploration of how our view of Santa came to be. Stories presented in voice benefiting War Child North America. Seanchai Library. Contact Derry McMahon for more information.

Saturdays, December 11th & 18th @ 8am, and Sunday, January 2nd @ 9am : Poetry Presentation by Serene Bechir at the Yule Festival
As part of the Yule Festival, Serene Bechir will read poetry on stream. The selections will be from personal favorites, original works, improv and poetry that has been submitted for the Yule Festival Poetry Anthology.
The Third Annual Presentation of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol

Sunday, December 19th at 3pm at the Frosty Fruit Islands
Shandon Loring will reprise his role as “Ebeneezer Scrooge”, the cold-hearted, tight fisted, greedy man, who despises all things which promote happiness, the Holidays most specifically. Elder Priestman will once more lend his Southern warmth to the story as “Bob Crathchit,” Scrooge’s underpaid clerk and father of Tiny Tim. The rest of the ensemble will include Aoife Lorefield, Derry McMahon, Marian Dragovar, Bear Silvershade, Spyot Demina and Caledonia Skytower in a presentation adapted, directed and in a setting created by Aoife Lorefield. Presented in voice and free, with donations are accepted to support Community Virtual Libraries.

Avatar Repertory Theater invites you to celebrate the essence of the season with a collection of short plays written and performed by A.R.T. members. Spilling the bounty of talent that is A.R.T. onto the stage we will explore the music, stories and indulgence of the Christmas holiday. The one hour production will be followed on Sundays by troupe member DJ Thundergas Menges spinning us a party of tunes to make the eggnog slide down smoothly.

Sunday, December 12 from Noon to 5pm: TOYSTOCK! Toys for Tots Benefit
Seanchai Library Storyteller will OPEN the Event at Noon SLT The Night Before Christmas and Other Christmas Classics. Music and holiday fun all afternoon, benefitting Toys for Tots. Contact Lizzo Dreamscape for more information.

Mondays, December 13th & 20th, and Thursday, December 16th @ 9am and pm: Poetry Open Mic at the Yule Festival

Thursday, December 16th @ 7pm: 16 Ghosts for Christmas with Shandon Loring
Ghost stories have been associated with Christmas for hundreds of years. The winter prospect of long dark nights, howling winds, low-lying mist and snowed-up roads all contributed to the appropriate setting for the recital of supernatural tales around the Christmas fireside. Tuesday, December 21st @ 10am: Have a Holly Jolly HOT Christmas!
It's not just the cocoa that's hot at this story session! Lavendyr Lilliehook brings erotic stories for the holidays! The irreverent and irascible Crap Mariner brings his sarcastic and caustic wit, along with his 100 word holiday stories. His stories are usually not appropriate for any but those who like edgy entertainment. We'll be placing bets to see if he gets coal in his stocking this year. AGAIN! Thursday, December 23rd @5pm: A Christmas Carol (Part One) with Caledonia Skytower at the Evolution Kingdom
Pull up a chair near the hearth in the Great Hall of the Castle at the Evolution Kingdom, and listen to the first half of Dicken’s classic tale of the redemption of a soul. Presented live in voice.

Thursday, December 23rd @ 7pm: The Night Before the Night Before Christmas with the Seanchai Storytellers
"'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring..." Join the Seanchai Story team for a retelling of the classic original ("A Visit by St. Nicholas" by Clement C. Moore) and plenty of variations of that most beloved story. Friday, December 24th @5pm: A Christmas Carol (Part Two) with Caledonia Skytower at the Evolution Kingdom
The conclusion of this classic told near the hearth in the Great Hall of the Castle at the Evolution Kingdom. A formal Christmas Ball to follow at nearby Club Evolution. Presented live in voice.

Sunday, December 26th from 5pm to 8pm: Post-Holiday Pajama Party
Join the Seanchai Storytellers for a fun time of stories, pillow fights and nice snacks as we unwind from the holidays. We'll supply stories of all types, some sleeping bags, and lots of nice food, wine, cheese and hot cocoa. All stories in voice, with lots of laughs, and benefiting the Community Virtual Libraries.

Monday, December 27th @ 3pm: All Star Sounds of Poems Festive Special
As a festive special, the 22 regular performers from the Sounds of Poems weekly poetry show will take turns to read some of their favorite poems. Sounds of Poems has been presented weekly for nearly 4 years, and usually 2 performers per week read poems for the audience. Today will be an all star performance of best loved poems by SL's favorite poetry performers. Presented in voice.

In the longest, darkest nights of the year

sharing words like our ancestors did

Saturday, January 1, 2011 @ 6am: Poet’s Plunder – Happy New Year!
Start your new year off right! The Poets' Plunder is a voice open-mic event based around poems about pirates, cats, love and exploring all styles of poetry. This week we will feature poetry associated with new beginnings appropriate for the New Year. This event is hosted by the Pirate Neko Poet Klannex Northmead and every week the best original poet as voted for by the audience wins a gem. These awards are cumulative and three gems entitles the poet to a share of the prize booty (often 10 000 linden).
