SL ARTS & LITERATURE: AVATAR REPERTORY THEATER presents THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR

A doctor, a parson and a judge go into a bar... will they remember the punch line? Will the lecherous Falstaff bed the luscious Alice and Meg before their husbands catch him? Fighting for the hand of rich pretty Anne are a penniless aristocrat, a wealthy idiot, and a rapier wielding Frenchman - will the parson die?  Come see Shakespeare as only Avatar Repertory Theater plays it in three parts on three Fridays, September 9 through 23 in Avatar Repertory Theater’s new performance space on Cookie.

The Merry Wives of Windsor was first published in 1602, though believed to have been written prior to 1597. It features the fat knight Sir John Falstaff, and is Shakespeare's only play to deal exclusively with contemporary Elizabethan era English middle class life. It has been adapted for the opera on occasions.  The play anachronistically places Sir John Falstaff, who had previously appeared in Shakespeare's plays about the medieval King Henry IV and set circa 1400, in the contemporary setting of the Elizabethan era, circa 1600.

Falstaff arrives in Windsor very short on money. He decides, to obtain financial advantage, that he will court two wealthy married women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. Falstaff decides to send the women identical love letters, and asks his servants – Pistol and Nym – to deliver them to the wives. When they refuse Falstaff sacks them and in revenge the men tell Ford and Page (the husbands) of Falstaff's intentions.  The Merry Wives of Windsor is often set outside of the Elizabethan era because of Shakepseare’s commentary on the middle class.  As the poster and promotional materials from Avatar Repertory Theater suggest, they have set this work in the Wild West.  So you may consider a jug of whiskey, or a ten gallon hat filled with whiskey to refresh yourself during the performance.

The Merry Wives of Windsor will be presented in three parts on three successive Fridays, 5pm SLT, Sept 9, 16, 23 at the New Theater on Cookie sim.  Performed in live voice by Kayden Oconnell, Madame Thespian Underhill, Pipsqueak Albatros, Rowan Shamroy, Elegia Underwood, Corwyn Allen, Caliban Jigsaw, Sodovan Torok, Sam Brautigan, Em Jannings, Dolgoruky Umarov. Adapted and directed by Ada Radius. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Cookie/201/206/21
