Memorial Day in America and in Second Life - Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Memorial day originated after the American civil war to honor the fallen union soldiers. Since the early 1900’s it has been observed on the last Monday of May in the United States. This is a day of honor and remembrance of all the courageous men and women that have since died in the United States Armed forces. It also marks the beginning of Summer and vacation season. Observers visit cemeteries to deliver flowers and flags, others celebrate with cookouts including fireworks and family reunions.

Boooooo to the menacing storm “Beryl” as it delivers rain and strong winds to Northeastern Florida and Georgia. There goes the fireworks display in those areas.People are most likely packing up the BBQ grills and running for cover.

But in New York, Memorial Day is being observed with the majority of festivities taking place at the Soldiers and Sailors monuments on west 86th street and Riverside Drive.

Philadelphia, the first capital of the United States is deeply rooted in American History. It is a beautiful day in the city with sunny skies and many things going on. Especially around Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was adopted back on July 4th, 1776.

In Washington DC, the annual Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally is in town making sure our POWs and MIAs are recognized and protected. This tribute gathers about 900,000 people a year!

Right across the Potomac River in Virginia, Arlington national Cemetery is another location where observers are gathering in remembrance of all those that gave their lives for our freedoms. On the West Coast and in the middle of the country. All sorts of similar festivals, Museums tours, memorials and BBQ’s are going on.

In Second Life American avatars celebrate in a variety of ways, welcoming others from around the world to join in with the festivities. Here are some things going on today.
