Second Life’s First Ever Photography Fair - Fynnyus Resident Reporting

In the planning stage for the past two years, creators Angela Thespian (angelathespian resident), Frank Atisso, and Cesar Lighthouse, have brought the first ever Photography Fair to Second Life. Sponsored by Focus Magazine & Art Galleries, this unique event runs from December 18, 2020 to January 1, 2021. Why have a photography fair? As Angela told me, “It's really out of dedication to our loyal readers and to continue to constantly try to provide assistance and encouragement to explore their creativity.” And so, the Photography Fair features some of the most creative photography specialists and creators in Second Life. From 3-D tools, to props, and backdrops to poses, 33 of the best-known photo brands are here at the fair bringing everything a photographer could need, from the beginner to the professional. And many of the creators will have some very exciting offers just for this event. In addition, photography workshops will be offered over the course of the fair (see the workshop schedule below). So, if you’re interested in Second Life photography and enhancing your Flickr collection of images, this fair is a must!

The event started with a live performance by Nefer who sang popular songs of the Top 40 variety. Nefer was the first of many live performances at the fair (the schedule of live and DJ performances at the fair is provided below). The people at this opening performance had been waiting several hours for the event to open at noon, at which point dancing and lively conversation ensued. I spoke with several people about the fair and there was overwhelming enthusiasm expressed by everyone.

When asked for her impressions of the Photography Fair, Freja (freeflying), the owner of Unbound Spirit, told me, “I’m impressed. It’s the first time FOCUS has had an event like this. It feels professionally done. There is always someone online, making sure vendors are on track. They have arranged some really, really good events and not just one or two, but one every day. The people who have visited have shown real interest and have asked good professional questions. So, it seems like a high-quality event.” If you get a chance, visit Freja’s booth at the fair.

The event organizers were enthusiastic, too:

Angela Thespian-Ireland (angelathespian): this fair is an opportunity for vendors to share their creativity!

Patrick Thespian-Ireland: Of course, another cool feature of the fair is that backdrop designers are offering "gifts" of props with their sets - such as flowers, or drinks etc. - all bringing a special flavor to each photo. It’s all quite brilliant mind you, I just love how this has come together.

Frank Atisso: There is something that we have here especially for backdrops. Backdrop creators often lose out because they can at most display one product in the limited space of the booth. So, we provided each backdrop creator with the option of a platform to provide them more space. So, this is something creators can use so that people get to see more of their work.

I asked famous Second Life photographer, Artemis (artemisgreece) what she thought of the Photography Fair and she told me, “It's good they thought about it because I think it's the first time in Second Life for an event like this. Poses and backdrops are presented at other events, but only as support and not the main thing because you know at events mostly clothes catch the eye of the visitor and here photography is the main subject and that's good.”

Another well-known Second Life photographer, Hermes Kondor told me, “I think this is a very important event for the photographer community in Second Life. The choice of products is excellent.

The fair appeals to the extraordinary popularity of photography in Second Life. I asked why is photography so popular in Second life? Here is what I found out:

Angela Thespian-Ireland: that is much like asking "what is the meaning of life?"

Patrick Thespian-Ireland, Angela’s partner told me:  I can answer that from my own perspective. First, it's super fun. CGI and digital art have been around for years. Traditional mediums such as painting with oils and acrylics, or watercolor, etc. are wonderful and of course traditional photography with a DSLR camera and fancy lenses. However, many people in Second Life just love to take snapshots. Many VR games allow you to do that and have for years. So why it's fun and exciting is that the virtual world here in SL is so amazing, and pretty real - many SIM designers and creators of mesh do amazing work. An example would be landscape photos. Photographers take fab shots and create such beautiful shots that rival real life.

Angela Thespian-Ireland: There are bloggers who are passionate about sharing their sponsor's merchandise artfully,  but then there are CGI artists who focus on creating art and I think most of all, Second Life photography is accessible to those who need/want a creative outlet but don't have the skill to paint or draw. The fact is that people want to be seen and show their creativity. It’s innate is almost all of us. Some people write, some people sing, most people can do neither. Everyone is creative, though and Second Life offers people a medium to explore their creative selves and this fair is meant to provide those people with the tools they need. The point is not income for us - that may be one of the biggest differences between this and other fairs. Our mission for this event is truly to provide information to photographers, primarily our readers, and also to help our vendors reach photographers.

Hermes Kondor: Well, because it's an excellent form of expressing our feelings, creating art. And it's very good that Second Life photography is so popular. In this sense we are obliged to take even better photos and work more technically and creatively. We need to try to be better because it's not easy. The competition is great and very good. There are great artists in Second Life who could very well show their work in real life in a gallery. Second Life is a world of creativity and we see that here at this excellent event. Second Life, in its essence, is a work of art, too and needs to be discovered and seen in different ways. We need to see differently and better to show even better works of photography.

And there you have it! The Photography Fair is a wonderful opportunity for you to get started on your photographic journey, or for those already well-versed in the visual arts, a way for you to up your game. And just another quick note: so far the fair has been very successful with an average of 500 visits a day and most of the vendors already recouping their investment in renting the booth, so come and see what’s happening at this unique Second Life event before it ends.

The Flowers Are Opening In My Body July 11th – Aug 6th, 2020- New Art by NarayanRaja, also known as Shiny

I feel that all the stars shine in me.
The world breaks into my life like a flood.
The flowers are opening in my body.
All the youthfulness of land and water
smokes like an incense in my heart;
and the breath of all things
plays on my thoughts as on a flute.

–Rabindranath Tagore

Welcome to “The Flowers Are Opening In My Body.”

The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the book “Fruit Gathering" by Indian mystic poet Rabindranath Tagore. First published in 1916, it was then translated by the author himself from Bengali into English.

The exhibition features new works conjured during remote walks in nature, rare outings during four months of shelter-in-place during the Covid-19 pandemic. The artist presents digital photographic objects that harness the power of photography and analog processes. Root systems dipping into shallow summer creeks and their rippling reflections, faces in stones, snakes in the grasses, vultures, fallen and decaying Redwoods, trees scorched by California wildfires, and 130,000 fatalities in the USA.

These are the components for spells as imagery. They serve the artist as medicine and healing. Such meditations are alchemical transmutations (mortifcatio, negredo) pondering death and decay, and thus the cycles of life, cause and effect, and its restorative, visceral earth magic potencies.

Shiny’s art navigates and guides us through an ongoing time of dying and emerging stories of self and society that call for dynamic alchemy of creativity, compassion, curiosity, and openness. These mystic pixels capture altered states of mind and seeing, all in a foreboding and delightful quest for self-knowledge.

Please join the artist and friends for the opening reception festivities.
Day:   Saturday, July 11th
Time: 12 – 3 PM SLT

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Costa%20Luna/110/210/24

Exhibition  •  Refreshments  •  Free Gift •  Live Music
DJ Shiny 12:00 – 1:30 PM  •  DJ Moshi 1:30 – 3:00 PM

RUN COME CELEBRATE

The artist sends special thanks and high vibes to Nyx, Ed, the 420 Gallery for Art, and the community at Stoner Hangout for their support and encouragement..

All works are available for sale inworld. Feel free to reach out to Shiny for comments or questions.

Interview with ᴛᴇᴍᴘᴇsᴛ ʀᴏsᴄᴀ-ʜᴜɴᴛsᴍᴀɴ (tempest.rosca)

SLE: Hi Tempest, it is a pleasure to interview you about the Resolution Exhibition. Before we get into the collection of art being showcased, I’d like to learn a little bit about you. What brought you to Second Life?

Tempest:  Hello Lanai ! Thank you so much and it's wonderful to hear from you!  What brought me to SL?  Well, it was a super long time ago, back in May 2007 when I received an email from Sky News asking if I would be interested in current affairs and new stories within a virtual world!  I'm not a natural gamer, so I'm not part of the gamer culture but I thought Second Life sounded interesting and I thought I would give it ago!  I'm still here (give or take a few breaks!) so I guess you could say I liked it!

SLE: The arts and photography in SL is very popular because it allows photographers from all over the world to showcase their work on a global scale. What inspired you to get involved in the art community?

Tempest: I've exhibited with Kultivate in the past (back in 2015) and it was something I really enjoyed but my photography then took a turn and focussed predominantly on fashion/blogging which means that you are limited creativity wise as you, of course, want to show off the designers creations in the right manner.  However, when I gave up blogging back in 2019 my work started to take on much more of the creative vision I had been missing.  Being involved with Kultivate has ignited my passion for all things artistic and John has of course contributed to that, encouraging me and pushing me outside of my comfort zone - and I have to say I'm loving the challenge and this opportunity!

SLE: Aside from the arts in SL, you are also a big part of Kultivate Magazine and charities,  can you tell our readers about the events you are involved in that raise money for charity?

Tempest:  Kultivate is the official media partner for Team Diabetes of Second Life, the official and authorised team of the American Diabetes Association.  Their season will return in October and I'm looking forward to working with the charity this year, as it will be my first time participating behind the scenes with Team Diabetes!  You can learn more about Team Diabetes and their events by visiting their website:  www.teamdiabetessl.org

SLE: The Resolution Exhibition is one of monthly art installations you curate. Can you share with our readers more about this event. Do you handpick the artists you showcase?

Tempest:  Resolution has been a dream of mine for a long time - I've been running various groups within FLICKR which recognise (in my opinion) exceptional photographer/graphic talent so I've always fangurled various artists and applauded their work.  Kultivate has given me the opportunity to take that further and to bring  'Resolution' exhibition to showcase some of these exceptional creators.

SLE: Why the name Resolution Exhibition? Can you explain the theme?

Tempest: There is no theme for the exhibition at all - the only request is for the exhibitors to showcase their best work and whilst we encourage new items it's not a necessity.  The Resolution name came from the photography aspect, as a keen photographer in real, I thought this would be a suitable name for exhibition.  Formal definition is: - Image resolution is the detail an image holds. The term applies to raster digital images, film images, and other types of images.

SLE: Can you give us a scoop on the next events to come?

Tempest: Whilst the summer is quieter for Kultivate, we still look to give opportunities to artists at our galleries across the sims so it's best to keep watch on the calendar on the web site under the 'Upcoming Events'  : https://kultivatemagazine.com/about/  .   Of course we have Team Diabetes starting in October mentioned above.  To keep with the British theme and our love of beer!, we also have a  pub and new gallery called "The Mad Mare and Dene Art Gallery" where we showcase artists in the pub each month.  However, we have live music every Monday at 3pm slt and DJ set/trivia at 4pm slt and on Wednesdays DJ/trivia from 4pm to 6pm slt.  So come and join us!!  It's so much fun :)  - more info here:  https://kultivatemagazine.com/mad-mare-pub-dene-art-gallery/

SLE: How can artists and photographers get involved in your monthly events?

Tempest:  We love new talent and would encourage anyone who's interested in Kultivate or any of our galleries to take a look at the website for opportunities https://kultivatemagazine.com/artist-opportunities/  .  We have many events, especially at the The Mad Mare Pub, so we would love to welcome everyone to come visit and hang out with us.  It's so much fun and we're a friendly bunch !!   However, if anyone would love to know more about opportunities then feel free to drop us IM/NC or message us on facebook.

SLE: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Tempest: Art is different for everyone, I realise that now more than ever.  We all see things differently, we all like different things, we can all relate to pieces of work in different ways. Kultivate and the team there work tirelessly to create something special for the SL art community and, whilst I'm very new into the fray of the art world here and coming from a flickr/blogging/fashion background, I completely adore the people that surround me in this world.  Everyone I've met has made me so very welcome and I just adore being part of this community.  Of course, none of this would be possible without John's backing and encouragement - I have so much to thank him for, especially for introducing me to this wonder world - I look forward to what the future may hold !
