JAYDEN MERCURY: RENNASAINCE RESIDENT – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

For those of you who have never met Jayden Mercury, you are missing out on a real treat.  Jayden is the creative genius behind three of SL’s Hottest builds. As the founder of Spectre modeling agency, he has helped to train some of the most lovely and talented Models in all of SecondLife. The visionary behind NeverendingSL, he is the Founder, Owner, and Creative Writer, also serving as the Chief Creator of Mercury´s Traits. Additionally, his photo studio, Jayden Mercury Photography and Art, hosts some of the finest and unparalleled examples of the photographic arts.  We caught up with this creative dynamo and convinced him, along with two of his trusted Headmistresses, Melinda Bayn and Hanne Kenin, to share a word with our SL Enquirer Readers

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):     Greetings, Jayden.  Thanks for agreeing to chat with me.  Let’s start with an easy question. Just what is Spectre all about?

Jayden Mercury (JM):     SPECTRE is a modeling agency and school in Second Life that pushes the boundaries of virtual fashion, creativity, and presentation. It’s a platform where models can develop their skills, participate in competitions like SPECTRE Idol, and showcase unique, high-concept styling. The focus is on diversity—not just in fashion, but in representation, identity, and creative expression. It’s a space where individuality is celebrated, and everyone can bring their vision to life on the runway.

Headmistress Melinda Bayn (MB):     Honestly, I had hung up my gloves as a runway model in SL... after the great loss of Marcus Lefevre Enimo I didn't feel comfortable working anywhere... So imagine my surprise when I received the invitation from my Boss, Jayden Mercury to join his team... This agency, SPECTRE, became that ray of light and hope to work again under the excellence of the legacy left to us by our mentors.

Headmistress Hanne Kenin (HK):     Jayden and I often discussed reviving the discipline and high standards of classic modeling while blending them with fresh challenges that emphasize art and creativity. We wanted to take full advantage of Second Life’s limitless possibilities to bring our visions to life and create truly unique and immersive experiences.

JB:     What was your inspiration for Spectre??

JM:     I wanted to create a platform that embraces innovation and individuality in virtual modeling. Many agencies focus on traditional high fashion, but I envisioned SPECTRE as a space for storytelling, avant-garde, and unique expressions that might not be possible in real life. My goal is to create a world where creativity knows no limits, allowing models to take risks and push fashion boundaries as an art form. I believe modeling should be inclusive, bold, and empowering.

JB:     How many models are you working with?

JM:     For our upcoming Sakura Cherry Blossom show on the 22nd, we have a fantastic group of models. The show will feature two walks: one inspired by Dolce & Gabbana and Dior, which will be a sponsored walk, and a freestyle walk where models can express themselves freely. We aim to have models act like performers, telling a story through their movements. The show will be streamed live, and we’re excited to showcase the creativity and talent of our model group.

JB:     How many shows do you plan to run in a year?

JM:     The goal is to host several themed runway shows and competitions each year, with SPECTRE Idol being the main event. As the agency grows, I plan to introduce more collaborations and showcases.

JB:     Do you build your own sets for your runway shows, or do you farm that out to others?

JM:     I design and build most of the sets myself to ensure they align with the vision for each show. However, I’m open to collaborations with talented builders to bring fresh perspectives and add variety to the events.

JB:     Tell us about NeverendingSL.

JM:     NeverendingSL is an immersive storytelling experience based on "The Lost Artist," whose drawings come to life through a magical pen and paper. Visitors can explore the sim, following the artist’s journey through clues and hints embedded in the environment. With the 14th book, "The Shadowartist," already released, the story continues to unfold, inviting visitors to dive deeper into the mystery and adventure.

JB:     I understand you also have a Photography business? Tell us about that, what kind of photography do you do and of what subjects?

JM:     I run JM Artdesign, focusing on blogging for designers and shopping events. I showcase their collections through photography, highlighting their unique designs. I also offer personalized photography services for clients, providing customized and creative shoots.

Additionally, JM Artdesign hosts a gallery for artists to showcase their work. Artists can book a time at the gallery, which includes consultation, publicity, advertising, and hosting opening and closing galas. It’s a space for creatives to exhibit their art and connect with an audience.

JB:     Photographer, Builder, Artist. A true “Renaissance Man”. Do you have any other enterprises in mind?

JM:     My main focus is on growing SPECTRE and SPECTRE Idol, expanding these platforms, and creating more opportunities for models and creative expression. I’m also committed to continuing my blogging work and collaborating with designers and sponsors to elevate their brands. In terms of NeverendingSL, the story of "The Shadowartist" will not be the last—there’s much more to come. I’ll keep developing the narrative and immersive experiences, inviting visitors to explore the artist's world.

JB:     You have been here almost a dozen years. What is it that keeps you coming back, year after year?

JM:     SL offers unparalleled creative freedom. It allows me to bring my artistic visions to life—whether through fashion, photography, or storytelling—without the constraints of the real world. It’s a space where I can create something truly unique and personal.

MB:     The platform is incredible. When people on RL ask me if I'm still on Second Life and I tell them yes, they say, "Wow, you're over 15 years there, right?" 17 to be exact. I have a lot of free time, and I'm not that sociable on RL. I like to think I'm creative, and I love everything I get to do on SL. From theater to fashion shows, role-playing as a model, to being a K-pop idol... there are no limits.

HK:     The incredible friendships I've built and the endless creative opportunities in Second Life keep me coming back year after year. SL offers a unique space to experiment with styling, create custom poses, and bring characters to life through roleplay. The ability to push artistic boundaries, take on new challenges, and be part of a constantly evolving world makes it an experience I never tire of.

JB:     How can readers learn about upcoming events at your various enterprises?

·         SPECTRE: To stay updated on SPECTRE events, including SPECTRE Idol and our fashion shows, visit the website, join the Facebook group, or join our Discord community. We also have in-world groups for announcements and updates, and the landmark provides access to the current fashion show.

·         NeverendingSL:  Follow my blog and Flickr for the latest chapters and immersive experiences. Join the NeverendingSL group in-world for exclusive updates, and use the landmark to explore the ongoing narrative.

·         JM Artdesign: Follow my blog and Flickr for updates on photography work, collaborations, and upcoming events. You can also visit the gallery using the provided landmark to check out future exhibitions.

JB:     Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Enquirers Readers?

·         SPECTRE:  We’re always open to new talent for SPECTRE Idol and also have hiring shows where models can showcase their potential. Don’t miss our Sakura Cherry Blossom show on the 22nd—it’s going to be full of creativity, beauty, and powerful performances. And keep an eye out for SPECTRE Idol later this year—it’s going to be one of the biggest events.

·         NeverendingSL:  I encourage everyone to visit the current NeverendingSL installation and dive deeper into "The Shadowartist" story. There’s always more to discover as the narrative evolves.

·         JM Artdesign:  We have a special opening gala planned for the Sakura show, where we’ll showcase models' artwork and styling cards. We’ll also be releasing a magazine featuring the event. Stay tuned for more updates!

JM:     If you’re a designer, sponsor, or anyone interested in collaborating, I’m always open to ideas. Anything is possible in Second Life, and I believe we can bring creative visions to life together.

The Purrl is proud to present Dilah LIVE on Thursday March 13th at 9PM SLT

The Purrl is proud to present Dilah LIVE on Thursday March 13th at 9PM SLT, followed by the amazing Charice. Dilah began piano lessons at the age of seven, and discovered the Torch Song at the age of 8.  She had an ability and a passion for music that led to a music major in college. While in college she participated in theatrical productions from opera to variety shows before joining a road band and beginning her real life music education.

Versed in most types of music Dilah enjoys blues, standards and jazz in SL. Funny, warm and passionate, with a great vocal and emotional range, she lights up the stage whether singing or playing.  She rocks like Jerry Lee Lewis and swings a great Country/Western tune.  And she can improvise a mean blues song on the spot from topics of conversation in local chat.  She calls them "wing-it blues".

Featured on Magic SL Love Radio, Dilah delights her audiences with her own original songs and with covers of singers such as Eva Cassidy, Billy Holiday, Peggy Lee, Eagles, Nina Simone, and loves to receive requests.

The Purrl brings the best in jazz, blues and live performances in SecondLife inside SL's premier Art Deco style formal setting, with open bar, singles and couples dances, and nightly fireworks. For the best evening in romance on the grid, make it a night to remember at The
Purrl.

MELENDA YARROWROOT: MUSIC TO LIVE BY – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

Many of you may know of the SL Enquirer Singer / Songwriter Open Mic Competition hosted by this publication each month. As a rule, we generally recognize only the Winners of those contests with a Spotlight Feature article in the SL Enquirer, except in cases where several of the competitors gave such phenomenal performances that selecting a winner was all but impossible. February was just one such month. In this case, the outstanding performance turned in by Melenda "Mele" Yarrowroot so blew away the judges that Lanai Jarrico, CEO of SL Enquirer, insisted we recognize Melenda’s stellar performance as well. I was able to reach Melenda the other day and gain greater insight into this wonderful performer and entertainer.
Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) JB: So, Melenda. Congratulations on your fine performance at the February SL Enquirers Songwriters Open Mic Contest. win. It was well deserved. Thank you for agreeing to chat with me. To begin with, how long have you been performing your music, and at what sorts of venues?

Melenda "Mele" Yarrowroot (MY): Thank you so much for reaching out to me for this interview, it was a nice surprise. I started singing in SecondLife on a whim after the place I ran karaoke at closed down. I just happened to wander into Cafe Musique's open mic. I Sang over voice that night and the singers there and owner Laya were so sweet. This was back in 2016 and since then I have sung at many different types of venues, like Templemore, Firefly, Lovekats and I also try to be involved with the Camping for a Cure family for RFL each year at least once. I am very diverse in what I do lol.

JB: Wow. That is certainly a variety of locals and genres. So tell us, what was the inspiration for the songs you sang at the contest, and why did you choose those particular songs?

MY: I honestly picked them to start out because the theme was love songs. As I was waiting my turn, I was going through my list and trying to find ones that spoke to me. Ones that I knew I could put my heart into when singing them. I also really like to find songs that I think people can relate to. To Make You Feel My Love is one that at some point everyone has felt. We have all loved someone and sometimes it feels like they do not feel it how it is intended. For many reasons, people can relate to that. Then I choose Lose Control. I feel that one speaks for its self. smiles
JB: To really stand out in the SL Music scene, you have to have something special about your performances. How would you describe the brand that you now represent, and how do you define your music style?

MY: I agree that performers should do something that brings people to the shows. I joke about this, but my performances are total chaos, but tons of fun. I love feeding off the chat and the energy of the audience and I incorporate it into my performance/songs. I try to engage with people as I am singing for them. To make them feel included in my performance. I recently added to my arsenal of fun by passing out a pink unicorn that was made for me. I use it when I sing the popular song Pink Pony Club. I have changed up the name a little and it is now the Pink Unicorn Club. I am known on other platforms as the Fluffy Unicorn Melenda, so it only fits to add it here. My management is also great and coming up with what they call Melly Merch. Carlita has been doing Melly Merch for many years. I want the audience to have an immersive experience with me. It makes it fun for me and fun for them.

JB: What has been your biggest challenge breaking into the Music Industry?

MY: For me, the biggest challenge has been my own self. I tend to get in my head and I become very nervous and that causes me to hold back. I am also really shy so it is hard for me to self-promote in here. I tend to hide as much as possible, this is something I am currently working on overcoming by going out more and hanging out and talking instead of being always the wallflower. Now my friends would tell you that once I do get comfortable, I never shut up! So, if you see me out and about, PLEASE msg me! I promise I am nicer than it seems from my silence lol.
JB: What does it take to be a successful musician these days?

MY: You know, I think it is about putting yourself out there and being authentic to you. There will be many that will try and change who you are, how you sing or how you do the things you do. You really need to find what makes you happy and that will shine through to the places and people you sing for. The people can tell when you are not being true and they are not big fans of it. JB: What have been the most memorable performances of your career so far, in both SL and in RL? MY: Well, there have been so many performances over the years. One that I will always remember was my first officially hired show. I was so nervous and I spent so long getting ready. My wonderful friend and support at the time, Kayden Rae, made me this killer guitar and case. I loved it so much! All the people I knew came out and supported me, there were so many. Then at the end of the show I went to take my mic off and well sl took it all from me. There I stood my first time doing a paid show and I ended it non-meshed and naked. I figured at that point if I could stand there and laugh that off, then even at my most nervous times (which have been a lot) I would get through it with laughter and fun. As for my real life, I honestly do not go out and perform anymore. It has been many, many, many years. I have done a couple open mics or went out for karaoke but no real shows. That shyness just overwhelms me with stage fright. Who knows maybe one day I will break it and you will see me at a festival near you like I want to be.
JB: Wow, Melenda. I do hope you got your guitar back? That could scar a musician for life! So then. Who were your music idols, and those who most influenced your musical style?

MY: Etta James was someone that I just loved to listen to when I was younger. My grandparents raised me so I heard a lot of the older artists and that is what turned me on to singing. When I was in high school, I was in all the musicals and all the show choirs and competitions. It wasn't until I got older that the shyness took over. Other artists that over the years inspired my style have varied from Madonna to Lizzo. I have an eclectic style to my shows. You never know if you will get soft chill music, or if we will be belting out some dance hits and EDM.

JB: Do you post your performance schedule for anyone who wants to catch one or more of your gigs? Where would our SL readers go who want to hear you live and in concert?

MY: There are many places that people can go to catch me singing. I have a group in-world as well as a discord that we always post the shows in. I do have a Facebook, but I tend to not use it as much. The notifications just get lost there. You can also look for me in world melenda.yarrowroot and there are all kinds of links in my profile to send you in the right direction. I currently do not have a lot of shows, but hope to pick up some more soon.

JB: Do you have any Social Media Sites out there where readers can learn more about you?
  • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/melenda.yarrowroot/
  • Discord: https://discord.gg/8tAR3XDzVK

There you have it, folks…an in-depth look at that musical sensation, Melenda Yarrowroot: The Woman…the Myth…the Legend! If you are a fan of Live Music in SL, and let’s face it, who isn’t? Then you simply have to catch one of Melenda’s shows and decide for yourself how wonderful this performer really is. And when you do, tell her “Josh sent me”. You’ll be glad you did.

Be There! Aloha!
