A voice from down under let me introduce you to SilverLight GypsyHeart - ORION BARAL REPORTING

One of the things that I love about Second Life is the ability to be surprised continuously. I was recently at Terry’s Place for their open mic night. Now as we all know sometimes open mic is a hit and miss. You get the shower singers who think they are the next Frank Sinatra or Usher or even the next Pink. But then just sometimes the stars align correctly and all the pygmies are dancing in sync and you hear a voice that stops you in your tracks. This happened to me on this night. On stage was Silverlight Gypsyheart. I was truly amazed at her voice and was rather upset it was an open mic because I was only able to hear three songs. After the set, I was able to sit down with her for an interview so I can introduce her to you so you too can appreciate her voice as much as I did. 

INTERVIEW:

Orion  Baral (OB): How did you discover Second Life and get involved in the music scene? 

Silverlight  GypsyHeart: I first learned of the music scene in Second Life way back around 2008 when my son's band manager in the real world was organizing for them to stream a one-off gig in SL. A concept way beyond my comprehension at that time. It was during this year that I opened an account but didn't stay long due to the "pcs" capacity back then to cope with the speed of SL graphics rendering, I found it too frustrating so left for close to 4yrs. An email from a friend I had made back then brought me back to SL.I  became involved in the SL music scene only as a listener. I was hooked. In 2016 I was later asked by a well-known performer to be his manager, which I did for around 9 months. I later started organizing live music events at a venue a friend had asked me to build for them, so with 11 singers, some of whom are still with me today at my own venue *SPIRIT OF THE OUTBACK*​​. MY heavy involvement in the music scene had begun.

OB:  I’m glad you decided to give SL another shot! It sounds like you've been busy. How long have you been performing in RL and in SL?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: I have only been singing in Second Life for almost four years...mind you it took two years of coaxing and encouragement from good friends to build my courage and confidence to a level to take to the live mic. As far as RL... I have only performed in choirs as a child and teen with my favourite performances being part of a rock-folk group at a large local church where each Sunday where we performed full Rock Masses, we also competed in competitions around the state of Victoria Australia ...I was in the high harmony power vocal section of our group of eight and three guitarists.

OB: You have that kind of voice that you can sing many different kinds of genres of music, what is your favorite to cover?

Silverlight  GypsyHeart: While great love is the big power ballads from the great divas like Stevie Nicks, Chrissy Amphlett , Lita Ford, Anne Heart, Adele, Pink etc, I cover ballads from across the generations 1960s to present time, contemporary rock, alternative rock,  rock power ballads, even a bit of metal. As you can see Rock is my preferred genre and, while country is not, I do cover some of the more modern ballads that I love. It would be easier to say I don't sing opera or rap, I think you need a very special timbre for rap and it's definitely not in the mezzo-soprano range lol.

OB: AWW Too bad because I LOVE country music and gangster rap! JK. Have you ever written your own music?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: I wish. I have a son who is very talented in this area and who has written amazing music, but I think he got that particular talent from his Dad's side of the family.

OB: As you know I saw you at Terry’s Place at their open mic. But can you tell me how often you perform in Second Life?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: I used to sing six shows a week but for now I am only singing 3 shows a week along with any Charity Event I am asked to perform. I do love to sing open mics as they allow me to experiment with new songs, bring my true essence in a performer due to the freedom to express and experiment with my vocals to an appreciative set of listeners

OB: Every musician has a story about music and what it means to them or how it moves them. Can you share yours with our readers?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: Hmmm!!! What does music not mean to me? Music is everything. Music is the ultimate expression. Music evokes a plethora of emotions that stir the very essence of me, my soul. I was born with music in my ears, it brings joy, happiness, solace, excitement and passion just to name a few of the emotions that well up in me when I hear music. For me, music is the universal voice, the creator of peace, friendship. love, happiness. I always say "Nobody is fighting while they are singing or listening to music." Music,  whether through our very first instrument, 'our voice' or peripheral medium such as guitar, keys, etc is a gift, a gift to be shared to bring happiness and contentment to others.

OB: I fully agree. Music does inspire and invoke emotion and nostalgic moments.  Which musician influenced you to start playing music?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: My Darling Dad was my first music god. My Dad sang on stage in England from a six-year-old, he could also play piano and harmonica very well, my grandfather and all his sons were singers along with my much older cousin who would sing with his neighbour and friend Gordon Sumner you know who he is lol. Dad would always be singing around the house in his warm baritone voice, he would make up his own lyrics about me as he sang popular songs, much to my dismay when I was old enough to realize that there were not in fact the true lyrics to that particular music, just a Daddy singing to his little daughter lol. My Dad was part of a Handel's Messiah Choir when I was eight years old. I would follow him around the house singing his parts along with him even the parts he would make up for fun. So yes, my Dad was my first musical influence because there could never have been better. In Second Life: Remy Farman, a fantastic seasoned singer/ performer, helped me so very much with encouragement, advice, and support when my confidence was zero and my nerves would not let me crash through the too shy barrier. Canipanic from the O Lounge was the final confidence booster to say "go on you can do it", he held my virtual hand through my very first performance, solo, in both worlds as I belted  out " House of the Rising Sun."

OB: What are your goals in the music world? Where do you see yourself heading into the future with your music?

Silverlight GypsyHeart: You know, I am not in the music scene in SL to make money, I am not dependant on the money I make singing in SL to prop up my RL, I put it all back into my venue and performers, I sing for pure love and joy, so as far as a career goes if it happens it happens and I will be happy, I just want to make people happy, bring a smile to those who have had a rough day, to have a sing along and have fun, to leave their worries behind for an hour.. If I can do that in SL then for me, my future is gold.

Don't Sing it again, Sam - Jadey Dragon reporting

This week’s review starts out with a question. A question every lover of live music in SL needs to really ask themselves. Are we expecting too much? I took some time from my usual busy schedule to step into a world I had been avoiding for quite some time. One of those “open mic” nights where anyone and their furry can grab a stream, and let it rip. I dread going to these because let’s face it; we’re going to end up hearing a whole lot of sounds that resemble cats being murdered slowly and painfully. I wasn’t disappointed when the shrieking began. I was down to my last nerve when the woman holding the mic began to tell her story.

“My grandmother is dying. It’s a slow process and the only comfort she or I have found is in song, and so I sing. I sing for her, and for me, and I turned on my mic to sing for anyone else who just needs to know someone is there, and maybe my song will bring you back to a fond memory in time that you can focus on.”

Another singer, who was just as cringe worthy as the last, sat down one late night to tell me his story.
“ I am in a marriage that seems dead.. for 16 years I haven't had relations with my wife.. most of it is my fault, But It's weird sleeping on a sofa for so long..” he went on to tell the same story many of us know by heart. How SL is his escape, how he can be a rockstar and travel the world touring and meeting people from all over the globe.

A couple years ago Ashford University did a study on music and the brain. I could get into all the specifics of dopamine and how research has shown that listening to music is associated with upticks in immunity-boosting antibodies and cells that protect against bacteria and other invaders, but do you really need to hear all that?

The question I posed is “are we expecting too much?” Does the sound really matter once you hear the story behind it? Can you overlook the nails-down-a-chalkboard sound when you know that behind their screaming is someone’s dream coming true. Or someone else’s broken heart finding a mend in a melody.

For me the answer is … NO FRIGGIN WAY! I love the stories, I love the over sharing. I love hearing why you do what you do in SL. But I have to ask another question, why don’t you have any real friends? People who sit you down and gingerly tell you that the songs you sing may be classified as many things, but “singing” isn’t one of them. Sometimes I show up to these concerts and I look around for the hazard sign because I’m certain what you think is singing has to be a danger to someone’s health, some where!
Look, I’m all for finding your passion in SL. Take a cooking class, learn to paint by numbers, go on a hunt, pose naked with your friends in front of a taco truck. I don’t care what you do, but for the love of bacon, stop turning on your stream and slaughtering “Purple rain” I beg of you!

When did you join Second Life and what does SL mean to you?

I Joined Second Life in November 2009. At first I really had no idea what it was all about and I spent a long time just wandering aimlessly around. But then I found my way with a little help and now, SL means a great deal to me. I have a fantastic circle of friends and family whom I consider to be very much my RL friends and family, and SL has enabled me to sing and share my music as I cannot in RL. And that is a huge thing for me. To have the ongoing support  of my followers and "fans" means more than I could put into words.

Where in the world are you from? The Isle of Wight in England.

How did you discover Second Life and what was your first reaction?

I think I found it on an ad on a website, I can't remember which, but as I said above, I really had no clue what it was all about and was just a wandering noob, for a long while. Then I took a break - or more so, I forgot about SL - for about a year, then came back and was lucky enough to fall into a group of great people who helped me learn and grow within SL.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Bubbly, Fun, Random.

What are three special things you wished everyone in SL knew about you?

Some people think I'm a one trick pony when it comes to my singing, and a lot won't come to my events because they think it's all love songs, or even musicals and Broadway. But I have over 700 songs on my song list through literally every single genre, there is definitely something on there for someone and I'd love for people to come along who previously wouldn't have done, to see just how versatile I can be with my singing. And to request things they've never heard me do before!!

Can you tell SLE what inspired your involvement in the SL community?

I've always loved music, and when I came back to SL and started learning it properly, I was encouraged to DJ, so I did, and then I started playing some of my own songs during my DJ sets and pretty much everyone was telling me to become a singer in SL. So much so that I had a VERY kind sponsor who helped me get the equipment I needed to be able to start singing.

What are your thoughts on the SL culture? What would you change to improve the quality of your experience?

SL is a great place to meet new people, discover new things and to express yourself in every way possible, whether it be through music (DJing or Singing), whether it be through fashion (making clothes, or just what you wear), how you build and portray your avatar, the people you hang out with, and every other day. I think it's an AMAZING platform for people, like myself, who have difficulties or illnesses in RL who find it hard to get outside, or to meet people or socialize. It's an amazing way of being able to do things you never thought you'd be able to. And can also be such an educational tool in many ways.
The only thing I would change in SL is the greifers, trolls and bullies. But I think LL do their best with reports and such and I can't really think of another way to improve that.

What have you learned about yourself in SL?

I have learned some personal truths about myself, which I won't go in to lol. I've learned that I like some things and dislike some things, that I didn't even know were a thing. I've also learned a lot about creating things. Clothes, furniture, pictures etc.. And this has led me to learn a lot of new programs outside SL, such as Photoshop. I've found a lot of very good friends in SL, and I've learned to trust a lot more people than I did before SL, but I've also learned who not to trust. And I've also become a much better singer since singing in SL due to doing it every single day, when before I wasn't doing it at all.  And it's also raised my confidence a lot, in SL and in RL.

What are your most memorable/funny moments?

After 7 years in SL, there have been FAR too many funny and memorable moments to name just one. And many embarrassing moments also. I do recall one time, I was singing live, and it's always been a mission of some of my friends to try and make me laugh while I'm singing. And this time, they succeeded. They had me laughing so much, I couldn't continue. I had tears streaming down my face and had to stop the music because I just couldn't breathe. Luckily, everyone was laughing with me and we all had a lot of fun.
But as I said, there have been so many, and they will all always stay with me and make me smile.

What are your favorite places to visit in SL for entertainment?

Being that I sing at SO many venues, it's difficult to pick out my favorites. Sadly, I don't really have much time to actually go and enjoy being at a venue when I'm not working. But when I do, I love Greased Lightning. it's also one of my favorite places to sing. Such an awesome crowd of people, and the staff are fantastic too.

Another of my Favorites is LochNess. Another group of people I've been singing for, for over 3 years. I love them all dearly. And it's a great place to hang out and a beautiful sim to explore with so many different events on all the time.

Where do you like to shop?

I mostly do shopping events rather than specific shops. Such as FaMESHed, Colabor88, Kustom 9, N21, Shiny Shabby... And SOOOOOO many more.... I have a real problem with shopping lol...
But if I do go to a specific store, it's usually Blueberry, Addams, Just Because, HH, Dead Dollz, Candydoll..... Okay maybe there's a lot of them... I'll stop the list there. Lol.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers about you?
Music is my passion. I love being able to sing and share my music with the people of SL. Singing in SL, and the compliments and loyalty I get from my followers, fans, friends, family, means more to me than I can express and has done more for me, in RL as well as SL. And I will be forever grateful for that. The ongoing support and encouragement of people in SL is something I will never forget   And I want to thank you all for that. Thank you every one that has stood by me, helped me, complimented me. Anyone that has ever come to one of my gigs, tipped me, requested songs from me or just been there to enjoy the music. You are all the reason I do this, and the reason I have carried on through some very difficult times, in which, again, so many people have stood by me. The people in my group are not just my "fans" they are my friends, and I appreciate and am grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you.

After competing against 17 of SL’s top performers, the judges have spoken!

Meet Jeffah (Jeffah24 Resident); winner of SL’s Got Talent 2015. Jeffah aka  Jeff Blake is a composer and singer from Ontario Canada. In Second Life he is in high demand and performs at various venues across the grid. His broad genre includes Swing, Jazz, Broadway, pop, country, and rock. The SL Enquirer caught up with Jeffah to learn more about him and his inspiration for Music.

Interview with Jeffah

What does Music mean to you?

Jeffah:  Music is my life. Every moment of every day there is music in my head. Even when I'm not thinking about music, it is helping me do everything I do. Music is the reason I exist.

What inspired you to become a singer?

Jeffah:  It was the one thing I wasn't doing with music, and one day I just decided that I needed to develop my voice. That happened in the privacy of my bedroom, and no-one knew about it until I entered a singing competition when I was 17... and the rest is history!

What genres do you cover?

Jeffah:  In my SL shows, I sing Rock, Pop, Jazz/Swing, Country, Folk, Broadway, Disney... I like to tell everyone at my shows to consider me a human jukebox – press my buttons and pick a song, because there is something for everyone!

Do you write your own music? If so, what do you like to write about?

Jeffah:  All that I write is instrumental – I have never been a good lyricist. In fact, until I started singing, I very rarely paid much attention to the words in a song! I have written melodies for lyrics written by others, though.  Writing complex changes and mood-altering harmonies comes as a second nature to me. Would someone like to teach me how to write lyrics? :)

How did you discover Second Life?

Jeffah:  A friend on another virtual-world type of 3D chat platform told me about Second Life, so I popped over to make an account and check it out. A few months went by without much time spent on it, until one day I was roaming around and encountered someone who had a “Singer” tag over their head. I sent them a message asking about singing in SL... and we have been dating ever since! <3

You perform in a band in real life. Can you tell me more about your rl music background and what you have done before discovering the Second Life Music Industry?

Jeffah:  When I was very young, I was in a Yamaha Canada Music competition that went to a national level, and I ended up winning the championship. From that day, I was their “prodigy child”. I traveled all over the world performing in concerts from small showcases, to world-wide competitions in venues such as the World Trade Center in Singapore. I attended Wilfrid Laurier University for music performance and orchestration, and have played in many ensembles and touring bands, from R&B to Jazz, choral to orchestral, and most recently with the Canadian Fiddle Rock band “Fiddlestix”.

Aside from having a live audience, what similarities and differences do you feel when you are performing on a virtual stage as opposed to a real one?

Jeffah:  I can honestly say it is such a treat to be able to perform from home, in the comfort of my living room! However, there is no greater experience for a performer than stepping out on a real stage to thousands of adoring fans. I would say that I get a similar energy from my audiences no matter if they are at RL shows or SL shows – the audience's response and feedback during a show is what feeds me energy when I am performing.

Has Second Life helped your RL Music career?

Jeffah:  In a way, yes. Being able to sing more often, and for longer periods of time has been a direct result of performing regularly in SL.

Can you describe the feeling when you are performing for an audience? Do you get nervous?

Jeffah:  I used to get SO nervous all the time! However, after many shows around the world in various countries and different languages, you find that there is always one thing in common – music brings everyone together. After my first show, alone on stage in front of 10,000 people... very few scenarios find me nervous these days. It really depends on the situation. I was nervous during the SLGT final round! Most of the time, however, if you are confident that you can put on a good show, the nerves fade away. :)

What was it like when you were announced as the Winner of SL’s Got Talent 2015?

Jeffah:  I was alone at home, so I would need to ask my neighbours if they heard me! Haha! My entire purpose of entering this year was to see if I could be heard by some people who had never heard me before. Winning was the icing on the cake, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity.

Have you received other rewards and recognition in SL and in RL?

Jeffah:  This is the first for me in SL. In RL, I would need several pages to list them all. To me, life is a journey, and everything that happens to you along the way is a part of that journey. If you like who I am today, then I invite you to thank all that has happened to me in my past... for my past is what made me who I am today. Awards or not, the future is now. Make it a good one!

The Music Industry in Second Life is saturated with performers and DJs making it highly competitive. What do you think separates you from the rest?

Jeffah:  My shows are always tailored to the venue/audience for which I am performing. It is my goal to give the listener an experience where they could close their eyes and feel as if they were at a RL show. I take great pride in every note that you hear at one of my shows, truly – I hear things that most others do not, but I still hear them... and if it isn't perfect, it's not used. You can be certain that you will not hear anything less than the best I can give you, each and every time I perform.

From a performer's perspective,  how do you feel about the Music Industry in Second Life? There have been debates about pay scale, varying talent and venue costs, Could there be some improvements in how things are run?

Jeffah:  There are venues for every performer, from those just starting out to those who have climbed the proverbial ladder. Aside from the biggest names in music, performer fees in RL barely cover expenses. The fees most seasoned performers in SL charge are magnitudes lower than basic expenses to put on that show. If we are performing in SL, it is because we love to do it and hope that you will enjoy the show. The most important thing for audiences to consider is how much they would spend on a night out of the house, doing something similar to what they are doing in SL. If you were at a bar, for example, you would be buying drinks. If you were at an outdoor festival, you would likely be buying food and/or concert merchandise. In SL, if you can afford a few Lindens here and there, please tip the venues! Without venues, we have no place to perform.

What advice would you give new artists interested in performing in Second Life?

Jeffah:  Best advice I could possibly give anyone interested in starting out performing in SL would be to talk to other performers. They are the best source of information you could possibly have in terms of where to start and how to succeed.

How can readers follow your shows and sample your music?

Jeffah:  I have an in-world fan group named “Jeffah's Jivers”, a subscriber service for those who don't have group space, and a Facebook fan page where I post my show details. I also have a SoundCloud profile where I have some recordings that I have made over the past few years, and I just recently hit 1 MILLION plays! That's a lot of people who have listened to my singing!

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Jeffah:  Find a dream. Set goals that will bring you closer to that dream. Never give up. Be yourself. Live life, don't just watch it pass by.

2014 SL’ Got Talent Winner, Trinity Ermintrood (Bubbles) started as a little girl singing for her friends on hay bale trailers to the one with a nightingale’s voice at the talent show.  At 30, she has an electric taste in music in almost everything with a deep love for rock and country. She has been a karaoke host and Dj for over 9 years in real life. She has been singing in Second Life over the past year and has already got her hands full with requests for Live Performances. Debby Sharma: Please tell us something about yourself. And how did Second Life singing happen? Would you like to explore other virtual worlds too as your singing career?

Trinity Ermintrood: Well, I've been a singer my whole life. I grew up on a farm, and I used to use the hay bale trailers as a stage when I was a kid and perform to all my friends. Laughs. I've always loved performing in front of people.

Well, I used to record songs on to my PC at home, with a pretty bad PC headset and some free software *laughs*. I started DJing in SL a few years ago and every now and then, I would play some of my recordings to people. I would be told all the time that I should perform in SL, but I never had the equipment I needed to make that happen. Until a very kind friend was adamant that I needed to be heard and funded the equipment for me. I was just Djing a while back at a venue who had live performers and they were willing to let a noob like me sing there, to start me out.  And the rest kind of went from there really.

InWorldz has been mentioned to me a few times, but to be honest, I am so busy here in SL that I wouldn't have time to sing elsewhere, especially with my studying too. Plus SL is where all my "fans" and supporters are. This is where I started and I'm pretty sure this is where I will stay.

Debby Sharma: How did you come to know about SL' Got talent? And how was your experience there? How have the days followed after you were announced as the winner?

Trinity Ermintrood: I actually sing at a club owned by one of the judges from the auditions. She wasn't one of the main judges only for the audition stage, but she mentioned it to me and told me I should audition for it. I loved the whole experience, it was fantastic. Although it was tough for me as all the rounds were at 7/8pm SLT which is 3/4am for me and my neighbours certainly didn't appreciate me singing at that hour *laughs*. I never in a million years thought I would win though. I was stunned to even make it through each round. I was in total shock when they announced me as the winner!

Hectic, *laughs*. It was all very surreal. I had people IMing me non-stop to congratulate me. I still couldn't quite believe I had won. And I was inundated with requests for bookings, which is fantastic.

Debby Sharma: What do you think about Live Performances vs Djing in Second Life?

Trinity Ermintrood: It's a whole different kettle of fish to be honest. I love DJing, because it is my lifelong love affair with music. I love playing good songs and people to appreciate them. I love getting requests and learning new music that I may not have heard before, discovering new songs and bands etc. But I truly love singing also. It's what I love to do. I've always used music to express my emotions and such, and I can do that much more through singing a song myself than just playing it. I love the compliments I get when I'm singing *tries not to let head swell*. And I really enjoy the loyalty some people have to their favorite singers. I never saw that much when i was DJing. I had a few followers, but not like I do with singing. Although singing can be a lot tougher than DJing, because if you're feeling a little off color, or not having a good day, you still need to try and belt out those songs and hit those high notes etc. Whereas with DJing, you can always play good music no matter how you feel!

Debby Sharma: What are your favorite genres of music? Do you have any recordings that people may hear you outside Second Life, like on YouTube etc.? Is there any song that you love to sing and which also defines you?

Trinity Ermintrood: Rock and Country, for sure. Although I love literally every kind of music, from dance music to classical, show tunes to hard rock, Blues, Jazz, Soul and Funk, literally everything.

Yes I have a few videos on YouTube. Although, they are very old and I was half drunk, doing karaoke and one pretty bad recording of my final encore song at a small gig I did. There are many songs I love to sing; many "old faithfuls" that I will always love. But I think, with my life right now, the one prominent song to me, that I love to sing and that defines me as I am at the moment, is Eva Cassidy's Songbird (originally by Fleetwood Mac). All because of my partner, he calls me his songbird, and I sing that to him. He also proposed in the middle of one of my performances, whilst making me sing that song. My world revolves around him and my music right now, and that song, combines the 2 and defines me pretty well at this point in my life.

Debby Sharma: Would you like to sing at any charity concerts, if given an opportunity?

Trinity Ermintrood: Yes absolutely! I have done concerts for SU2C and Feed a Smile in the past and would love to be part of something like that again.

Debby Sharma: If someone wants to follow your path, what would you advice? Your passion for singing, makes it sound so easy and simple, is singing really easy in SL?

Trinity Ermintrood: Enjoy it!!! When I first started, I was so nervous all the time. And it definitely showed through in my gigs. I was always so worried about everything. I have recorded every single one of my gigs from the very first and the difference between the first one and my recent ones is huge. Once I learned to just relax and enjoy it, I found I was much better at what I do and people definitely enjoyed my performances more!

It can be. It obviously requires some technical knowledge, and I was lucky enough to go to Music College and I am also doing a computing/engineering degree so I know my way around technology. And I was also lucky enough to have some good friends who offered great advice when I first started out. It's a lot easier if you have a set routine before your gigs. As in, give yourself a certain amount of time to prepare and choose songs etc. But other than that, it is easy. Especially if it's something you love to do. Again, enjoy it! And it all comes as second nature. I know for sure that my singing career would not be what it is without the support of my partner and my best friend Becks as well as my good friend Hardy. They have all been absolutely amazing. And I couldn't have made it through SL's got Talent without their support either and their belief in me.

Debby Sharma: Would you like to say anything to your listeners?

Trinity Ermintrood: Just a huge thank you for all their on-going support. I know I have some very loyal fans out there and it most certainly is appreciated. I wouldn't be where I am today without them, and they all mean a lot to me. So Thank You to everyone who has stuck by me, encouraged me, believed and had faith in me and who has supported me throughout my whole singing career in SL!
