In remembrance of our fallen heroes, Second Life residents honor them across the grid with various gatherings, memorials and events.

Observing Memorial Day In a Virtual Way- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. It is a federal holiday  in the United States of America to remember and honor the men and women who have died while serving the country. It is a day of remembrance of the valor and courage shown by extraordinary souls who thought above their own self. After the American Civil War of 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic established a day for the country to decorate the graves of the heroes with flowers and called it Decoration Day.

Eventually by the end of 20^th Century, the Union and Confederate holiday celebrations merged to form the Memorial Day.  Today, It is a day to celebrate freedom gifted by the sacrifices of many families with speeches, parades and BBQ’s that last the whole weekend leading up to the Memorial Day.

Over time Second Life residents have celebrated various real life holidays in the virtual world. Memorial Day is also observed by Linden Labs, which has its offices at San Francisco, USA. On this day Linden Labs offices are closed, though in-world help is available. A series of Memorials and events are taking place in SL. Stop by to visit any you like.

Observing Memorial Day in the Real & Virtual Worlds- Silky Soulstar Reporting...

MEMORIAL DAY observances ranging from the sublime to the obviously salacious abound in Second Life; and are open to everyone from all corners of the Globe, and from every space found in our cozy little metaverse.

I’ve always found it impressive when I meet people from just about any country you can imagine, and yet they KNOW very well about my USA holidays.  Monday, May 26, 2014 is MEMORIAL DAY in the United States.  It is a day of recognition of our past and present military servicewomen and servicemen.  And it is particularly a day of remembrance for our fallen heroes, like my own Uncle and Godparent.

Although it is celebrated with a special day of observation in the U.S., I find it touching that it is also acknowledged by my global friendships.  And for that I am grateful, as well as proud.

Our Avatars exist in a metaverse, but are guided by RL people with hearts and souls.  So it is with honor, really, that I write this destination guide for the SL Enquirer about how our unique virtual world recognizes the very REAL sacrifices made by living souls, working to ultimate ends to keep peace for global citizens.

At Veterans Isle (192, 201, 23) you will find an in-world replica of the Real Life monument that reads 

“HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD”.

   If you are looking for a great place to spend a few moments of reverence this Monday, May 26^th 2014, the U.S. Military Veterans Center is a must-see destination for your teleporter.  You can also donate to the Wounded Warrior Project while you are there.

Memorial day originated after the American civil war to honor the fallen union soldiers. Since the early 1900’s it has been observed on the last Monday of May in the United States. This is a day of honor and remembrance of all the courageous men and women that have since died in the United States Armed forces.
