SECOND LIFE’s GOT TALENT: WINNERS IN BOTH WORLDS – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s most successful reality TV format EVER is the “Got Talent” series.  Originally a British Talent Show, it has spawned spin offs in over 69 Countries. And for several years, this modern-day classic has been making a splash in Second Life as well.

SL’s Got Talent (SLGT) contest was created and first produced in 2013 by Jackie Lefko. She is the CEO of the Speakeasy Entertainment Group. The idea of SLGT came to Jackie after debuting several new SL performers at her venue, The Speakeasy.  She felt a contest would be a great opportunity for those looking for a unique opportunity to not only showcase their talent but to also engage in a personal challenge.

The Contest starts with open mic auditions that are open to the public.  A panel of seven judges tell those auditioning if they are in or out of the contest.  From those auditioning, the judges select ten contestants to proceed to Round One

All contestants perform in Round One.  Eliminations occur after Round 1 and 2, typically leaving 4 contestants left to receive sizable prizes of 35K for 1st Place, 25K for 2nd Place, 17K for 3rd Place, and 5K for 4th Place.

This year’s SLGT Winners were
1ST PLACE - MAC317 PFEFFER
2ND PLACE - JUSTINELIAS ANATRA
3RD PLACE - AMBROSIA KAMALA
STONE VAYANDAR AWARD WINNER - MAHOGANY SOULSTAR

Recently, SL Enquirer caught up with this year’s First Place winner, Mac Pfeffer, and asked him about the SLGT Experience.

Josh Bellic:  How long have you been playing piano in SL?

Mac Pfeffer:  About 6 to 7 years here in SL and more then 30 years in RL. Originally I didn’t want to play in SL because of Conflicts with my RL profession.  Later, though, I found it to be a great way to communicate with people here in SL

JB:  How did you first get interested in The Piano?

MP:  I started to play the piano when I was 10.  I went to music school when I was 19 and I studied music 9 years until I graduated from the Conservatory. Piano was an important factor in studying music and music theory.  I found that with the piano I was able to compose pieces that were more complicated harmonically.

JB:  What did you think about the SecondLife’s Got Talent process?

MP:  About the actual competition itself, I had very little time to think.  All I know is I went fast and before I knew it, it was over. Since I’m relatively new to the SGLT concept, it’s hard for me to have any thoughts about it at this point.

JB:  Describe your practice schedule on the Piano.

MP:  I play professionally in RL and I practice a minimum of 10 hours a week on guitar.  I also practice solfege to keep up my hearing abilities. I listen to a song I like, then I play along with the instrument I play at that time. Other times I just play and practice scales or chord progressions. The same goes for all the instruments I play. There is a lot of time involved within the process.

JB:  What is your preferred style of music?

MP:  I would have to say Fusion / Jazz because of my background. However, in RL I play many other styles that I don’t play in SL.

JB:  Who inspires you in your playing?

MP:  I had a very complicated childhood and by playing music it was a very natural way to express my self in life.  Even today I still use music as a tool to express myself. My love for people can be heard in my music. Music gave me Grace in every way you can imagine.

JB:  What advice would you give to aspiring Virtual World pianists?

MP:  Practice!  Practice! Practice!   That, and always LOVE what you do.  You need to be disciplined and never give up. Make a goal for yourself and commit to the promise that you make to yourself. Another important factor is communication. Always try to communicate with other musicians SL and RL.  It is VERY important to do this. Without this there is no synergy when you play in a band or combo setting.

JB:  How did you first learn about SL’s Got Talent?

MP:  It was never my intention to participate in SLGT.  A friend of mine told me about it and asked me if I wanted to audition.  I went ahead and auditioned and was told I had made it through the first round and I thought “What did I get myself into?” From there I continued to appear and progressed swiftly over the next couple of days.

JB:  Describe the judges. Was there a “Simon Cowell” character?

MP:  I don’t know anything about the Judges all I know is that that nothing was given away. I had the feeling that the Jury was very tight and strict and I found it rather hard to participate from round to round.

JB:  Do you know how many competitors you had to face?

MP:  I’m not really sure.  I think it was a minimum of 12 of us.

JB:  What is the best thing about participating in SLGT?

MP:  That was an easy question.  The best part about SLGT is WINNING! (just kidding).  The best part is that the way I personally express myself through my music has finally come to light through the competition.  Additionally, we all developed a real camaraderie between and among the competitors. We were all very concerned for one another and interested in each others circumstances and performance.

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

MP:  Other than that I am honored to have participated.  It was a great journey to experience. The SLGT concept is inspiring, especially for the newer generation of performers. Hopefully they will even get more inspired as SL continues to evolve in the years ahead.

GeekSpeak – Healing the Earth- Join the discussion Saturday Nov 16th at 12pm SLT

So much damage has been done to the planet.  Deforestation, seas filled with plastic, acid rain.  This week we will be talking about the various ways in which humanity has started to clean up the world.  There are many efforts underway, from recycling plastic to planting millions of trees.

What is really needed to make cleaning up economically viable?  Can we think of ways to make money out of it?  Will there be ‘recycling billionaires’?  Can we trust the people in charge of recycling not to tip it all into landfill?

What are we doing to reduce the stream of waste that we produce?  Do you see an era coming when everything will be made from renewable materials?  What will that world be like?

Can we ever succeed in healing the planet completely?  Is it worth trying to do so?  Join us in the discussion.  Bring your friends!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday November 14, 2019
The Most Lively Hip Hop Cultural Music Showcase Returns To Second Life
It was four years ago in October of 2015 when Sunburst Premier Grid Entertainment and India Umia-Delgado brought the first three day Hip Hop History event to Second Life.  Close to one dozen of the most talented Hip Hop DJ's, a number of radio stations, Hosts, and 13 sponsors contributed to paying homage to Hip Hop culture for three days and making SL history.  During a post event radio interview, it was asked of us when would we do it again. Me nor India could answer. We didn't know. We didn't know then, but we know now.

Now, four years later in November of 2019 brace yourselves and prepare for Hip Hop History II 2019, as we plan on making SL history again.  The staff of Break Beatz Entertainment (BBE): Shon Larsson, India Delgado, Lex Ryada, and Cinfull Vixen along with ATOL Ent. and hosts: Fancita Miami (Secret Garden) and Sharif Tylman (Taboo Reign LIVE) are bringing to Second Life an event that surpasses the show stopper in 2015.  There have been many changes in the last four years in the Hip Hop world, in the culture, the artists, and some of the music. The same can be said of Second Life and the Hip Hop community. One thing that hasn't changed is our love of music and entertaining the SL grid. It's time again to share that love with the residents.

This time around for four days from November 21 thru November 24, we are bringing together twenty of the most talented DJs, (twice as many in 2015), talented Hosts, and with the support of twenty gracious sponsors, the most exciting and anticipated Hip Hop event to drop on the grid.  The twenty DJs will showcase their interpretation of the best in Hip Hop music culture opposite other DJs in a different event each of the four days as follows:

THE DICKENS PROJECT Returns to Second Life December 1st

The Dickens Project has become a winter holiday tradition for a growing number of Second Life residents since it began as a special seasonal presentation by Seanchai Library in 2008.  It transformed into an interactive environment in 2012, then to a full region experience for 2017 and 2018. Seanchai Library is proud to announce that they will be opening the doors of The Dickens Project 2019 Edition beginning December 1.

The Dickens Project celebrates the work of English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870) featuring his seminal work "A Christmas Carol." This year's edition presents a full month of exploration, storytelling, music, dance, roleplay opportunities, and the return of the "Urchins in Dickens’ London" experience.

‘TIS THE SEASON: HOLIDAY TRADITIONS – JOSH (THOMAS! BELLIC) REPORTING

The car door opens and out tumbles the family, swaddled in over-sized coats, scarves and mittens.  The children race into the forest of regularly spaced trees, with muffled footsteps and the crunch of compacting new-fallen snow.  “How about this one?” a young voice shouts. “Too short.” is the reply. “Here! This is it. Whatdaya think about THIS one?” “Wellll...If it weren't for that flat spot on the side there. Keep looking.”  Then finally. “Perfect! We found it. Bring the ax.” The sounds of chopping wood, dragging the tree back to the payment stand. The kids tossing back Styrofoam cups of hot chocolate. The tree is loaded atop the car, the family piles back inside, and chalk up another success in the perennial hunt for the perfect Christmas Tree.

This relic of bygone days is now available for you to experience in Second Life. Tex's Tree Farm is a one of a kind unique experience you will only find in SL.  This is a true family role play Christmas Tree Farm where you can pick and cut down your tree and take it home with you and your family.

Bundle up and bring the loved ones. Stop by the Deer Ridge Cafe to grab a hot chocolate while breezing through the Tree farm to pick your favorite tree. Grab an ax, pick an empty tree behind the demo tree you like then chop it down.  Once it has fallen, pay for the tree and accept into your inventory. All the trees come fully decorated with a menu that allows you to pick and choose which decoration you and your family like. Then add your own special Christmas touch with those special ornaments. Once you have picked your Christmas Tree, head on over to Under the Christmas Tree to thaw out and grab those toys and special gifts. More home decor and trees to choose from as well.

Make this a family tradition you’ll cherish for years.  Head down to Tex's Tree Farm for a family experience you will never forget.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Tex and Summer Humby at Tex’s Tree Farm as they were busy gearing up for the Holiday Season - unpacking boxes of ornaments, sharpening axes, and shoveling snow off the walkways and parking lots.  I was able to get them to slow down long enough to answer a few questions.

Josh Bellic (JB):   Tex? Tell me a little about Tex's Tree Farm.   How many years has this been in operation?

Tex Humby (TH):  My wife and I actually meet at a Christmas sim five years ago. We have been inseparable ever since. Tex's Tree farm has been in operation for four years now. It started off with just display trees that were decorations for the Christmas shop.  I am the builder and Summer is the decorator. Last year we started to build on the idea of having an original RP where anyone could come and chop down their own tree with an ax, just like you would in RL. We perfected the concept this year. Now anyone can pick a decorated tree they like, grab an ax and physically chop it down. Once the tree has fallen, you pay for the tree and it goes into your inventory. Nothing else like it in SL

JB:   Whatever inspired you to do this in SL? Was this process part of your own Family Tradition?

TH:  Cutting down our own Christmas tree was something we always did. Every year our family would bundle up and make our way to the farm. We would pick out the perfect tree each year and my Dad would chop it down and we would bring it home to decorate. It was one of my favorite memories as a child. Today we buy a real tree from a vendor as those long ago tree farms are almost non existent.  We wanted to bring our old family tradition back into SL.

JB:  Do you build all the tree options yourself?

TH:  We decorate each tree with a rezzer concept. Now you can not only cut your own tree down but touch to get a menu to build on that tree with the decorations you want. You have an option to choose which of those decorations on that tree you would like to rez, and leave room for your own decorations as well.   Summer comes up with such original ideas with adding more and more to each tree as the years go by. Now with the new rezzer concept she has extended those trees to include things like the candy shelf and toy sleigh. I love what she comes up with and can't wait to see each tree once she is done.

JB:  Will Tex’s Tree Farm be operated only seasonally, or do you plan to keep it open year-round?

TH:  We are open year round for anyone wishing to visit a Christmas location throughout the year. We add new trees every year and build the farm up. Next year will have have even more and it will only get bigger as the Farm has really taken off here in SL and people contact us every year asking if we will open the Farm or if the Farm will be open as they love to come back each year with their loved ones and experience the Tree Farm.

JB:  What else would you like our readers to know about either the tree farm, or the gift shop?

TH:  We would love for everyone to know that our location has so much to offer. Tex's Tree Farm experience go hand-in-hand with the shop. We built the Deer Ridge Cafe to let everyone stop and enjoy a family lunch before heading to the Tree Farm to cut your own tree. Once you have your tree, head over to Under the Tree Christmas shop for all of your Christmas Decor needs.  The first floor is dedicated to Christmas gachas and the 2nd floor to non-gacha items. We also have Georgia's Pet Adoption Center named after our third child who loves animals. The cabin is filled with gacha animals of all kinds that you can adopt and take home.

We also have The Magical Menagerie which is a Harry Potter Themed shop chalked full of magical creatures and all things magical. We built this for our second oldest daughter who loves the odd things of the world.

Last but not least we do have cabin rentals that have the cozy feel of winter with our multiple scene indoor decor options. They are the best cozy little cabins and cottages in SL that is snow year round for those that enjoy the feel of winter every day of the year.

So there you have it Folks.  As you put together your list of Christmas activities this Holiday season, be sure it starts with a visit to Tex’s Tree Farm, for a memorable experience the entire family will enjoy.

Why Second Life Players Should Consider Studying an Online Degree

Many Second Life players have found inspiration in the game to make changes in their real lives. Sometimes all it takes is a brief conversation with another player to open your eyes to a future that you hadn’t considered.
If you are looking to make a change in your life and to begin pursuing a new career path, an online degree is a great first step to take. Here are some of the reasons you should consider it.

Find a Subject Relevant to Your Interests

Many people are under the misapprehension that online degrees are only suitable for a relatively small range of subjects - those that can be completed remotely and don’t require any practical component. However, this hasn’t been the case for quite some time. There are now a number of leading universities that offer degrees in subjects like nursing and these include a placement component arranged by the university.
Studying online doesn’t require you to narrow your ambitions or restrict your potential choices for the future, studying online is a perfectly valid route into just about any industry you have your eye on. For example, check out the University of Virginia online - they offer tech, business, medical, and even politics-related degrees. No matter what you like to do in life, and in Second Life, there is sure to be a degree out there that is right for you.

Study at Your Own Pace

One of the main advantages of studying online is that it puts you firmly in control of your time and enables you to study at a pace that suits you. Online degrees have enabled single parents and other people who would traditionally not be able to commit to a university course to broaden their horizons for the future. Most online degrees can be studied on a part-time basis, meaning that the course will take longer to complete but will be much less demanding and intense.

Control Your Schedule

Some of us find that we learn better when we are left to study independently. If you are the kind of person who needs lectures and needs the face to face interactions with their professors that aren’t available online, a campus course is a better option for you. However, independent learners and those who just want more control over how they spend their available time will appreciate the freedom that an online degree offers.

Save Money on Tuition

Getting an education is expensive. Not only do you have to consider the immediate costs of tuition, which seem to be going up every year, but you also need to factor in the costs of accommodation, food, etc. Studying full-time limits the amount of time you can dedicate to a job and the amount of money you can make while you study.
An online degree is a much more realistic proposition for many people. For one thing, the option of studying part-time gives students much more latitude to work in their free time and earn money to offset their costs, which are already lower than they are for regular students.

Whatever your ambitions are in life, or in Second Life, an online degree can be an excellent first step to take. Online degrees now carry the same weight as their campus counterparts, cost less money, and offer students much more flexibility and control.
