LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR 2024 Winner VANESSAJANE

As a writer for the SL Enquirer, I get to travel the Grid in search of the absolute best creations by our many residents, and seeking the ultimate "High" that is possible in this pixelated paradise called SecondLife. I have found High Velocity Motorcycle Raceways, High Energy Cocktail Lounges, High Flying Air Shows. Highly Skilled DJs, and High Quality Builds. But this year was different.  This year I git to peek behind the curtain of High Fashion, and the results were stunning.  No.  I did NOT get to judge a Fashion Event (my boss kept THAT duty), but I did get to interview the winner of this year's LUXE LOOK OF THE YEAR 2024 competition. I caught up with this year's winner, Vanessa(VANESSAJANE66).  She was packing her bag to catch a TP on the first stop of a promotional tour, but she did manage a few minutes to share some of her experiences with our SLE readers.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):     Why did you decide to participate in the LUXE Look of the YEAR 2024 Competition?

Vanessa Jane (VJ):     I had been a Finalist in the 2022 Look of the Year contest and had enjoyed the experience.  I met new friends, gained valuable modeling knowledge, and loved the fun of the contest itself.  The 2022 competition left very positive memories so when the contest came around again in 2024 I was keen to experience it again and see how far I had grown as a model and stylist.

JB:     How was the experience? What did you find to be the most enjoyable aspect of the competition?

VJ:     As expected it was another great experience.  The contest is very well organised and lots of thought is put into developing the Finalists during the process.

I loved the theme this year, using the style Icons of Jade Pono (the Look of the Year winner in 2022), Ponchituti Boucher, Frolic Mills, Zuri Rayna, and Coco Chanel.  We had to pay homage to their style but interpret it creatively in our unique way.  My assigned Icon was Coco Chanel and I wanted to capture the essence of her fashion ethos but take it to the 21st Century.

JB:     What part did you find to be the most was the most difficult

VJ:     We had a surprise challenge assigned to us by In-Nova Models.  Naar, who is a previous Look of the Year winner, gave us a headpiece and gave us half an hour to style it for a photo shoot where the headpiece was the focus.  We were given no other advice.  Luckily I realised I should use Luxe Paris clothing, but forgot you don't need to worry about shoes if being photographed from the shoulders up!

JB:     Why is fashion important to you?

VJ:     I am a creative person generally and love the ability of fashion to visually represent who I am as a person, and how I wish to show myself to the world.  In Second Life I have the perfect 'clothes horse' figure so that expands my ability to explore different styles and different aspects of myself through them.  As a model and stylist who is also an artist, I love to find the 'voice' of clothes and express that in how I style and present them.  I must also say that in real life I live in the far north of Scotland.  It is a beautiful place with often awful weather.  Nothing beats coming into SL and putting on fabulous fashion after being enveloped in wool and waterproofs in real life!

JB:     How would you describe the brand that you now represent?

VJ:     Luxe Paris is a brand with genuine passion, vision, and aim to bring elegant, European Couture-inspired fashion to men and women in Second Life.  It is not a shallow, purely commercially driven business but a true fashion house with a mission and drive.  I love how the Designers bring real-life experience and skills into their work, which truly gives the brand its unique look.  I also love how they continually push to make Luxe Paris designs as good as they can be.  Second Life is often a shallow place and it is a pleasure to find such authenticity and integrity, in both the lovely people who make up the team, but also in what they want to achieve with the brand.

JB:     How did you take the news when they first announced your name as the winner?

VJ:     I was in complete shock as I hadn't expected to win.  My brain kind of evaporated when they announced my name.  It was not my finest hour when they gave me the winner's tiara, which was boxed. I floundered way too long before realising I could rez and unbox the tiara behind the winner's podium to wear it for my photograph to be taken.

JB:     How do LUXE Fashion Shows stand out from all the other similar events out there?

TVJ:     This question makes me think of Look of the Year Winner Jade Pono's amazing 2022 show 'We Are the World'.  It had a clear and wonderful theme, of highlighting and celebrating Diversity through the medium of Fashion.  The participating models were all ethnicities and were given creative rein to interpret their looks.  The show was superbly organised and staged by the Powerhouse Collective and great attention to detail was paid to every element.  The Show encapsulates for me why Luxe Paris shows stand out.

JB:     What does it take to be a successful Fashion Show contestant?

VJ:     Don't expect to win, but work hard towards always getting better because one day you might reach the level where you could win.  Do competitions for the holistic experience they give, the memories and friends you make, the fun of the challenges, and the opportunities to measure progress and grow. Leave your ego at the door and be positive and nice to your fellow candidates.  Remember most, if not all of the time, you will not become the winner.  If you have gone into competitions for all the other positive experiences and benefits you will never be a loser either.

JB:     What advice could you give to someone wanting to enter the world of High Fashion?

VJ:     This depends.  Do you want to be a High Fashionista or a Model / Pageant competitor?  Modeling in SL isn't a place for big fragile egos.  Do it if it's your passion, and you are driven by a desire to keep learning and improving.    There are many disappointments, especially today because opportunities are fewer as the Modeling and Pageant worlds are smaller.

Being a High Fashionista is easier, do your research into RL trends and explore widely among the SL Fashion brands in SL.  There is so much to explore.  Remember too the RL trick, you can make even a basic outfit high fashion if you style it with creative, fabulous accessories.

JB:     And of course, what is a Fashion Show without social commentary? What social stigma does society need to get over? What makes you roll your eyes every time you hear it?

VJ:     Unfortunately, we live in an imperfect World.  For me, this isn't helped by many who have closed minds, set and rigid beliefs, and an almost tribal 'them or us' attitude, which cannot be swayed by evidence.  Mother Teresa said 'If you judge people you have no time to love them'.  We all have our human condition to connect us and it saddens me that people for whatever reason cannot develop open minds.

JB:     Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Enquirer Readers?

VJ:     I am looking forward to working hard as Brand Ambassador, and the opportunities and experiences that are opening for me.  I am truly passionate about paying back the trust and the belief Mika, Paris, and the team put in me when I won.  Luxe Paris feels like a home I have come to and will contribute to, both during my reign and perhaps, if I am lucky, as a Designer going forward.

Soooo...there you have it.  What better advice can you find than that coming directly from this year's winner?  If you have ever thought about entering the world of High Fashion, take in a show or two.  Talk to the contestants - they don't bite.  And who knows?  Maybe some year you, too, might find yourself featured in SL Enquirer as a LUXE Paris: Look of the Year WINNER

Give it a shot.  Tell 'em Josh sent ya.  You'll be glad you did

LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR THE CROWN to VANESSAJANE!

After months of waiting and suspense, LUXE Paris finally has its new ambassador! VanessaJane won the prestigious LOOK of the YEAR tiara and the impressive L$50,000 prize pool that went with it! In her wake, the first runner-up, TwinkieBean, and the second runner-up, WyattFrost!

PHOTOS by ALE CHUN

The winner, a pretty Scottish girl with dramatic elegance, is (surprise!) a pure product of the LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR competition. It is thanks to her first selection in the 2022 finale that she received a gift certificate from L'Amour University of Fashion and learned the basics of virtual modeling. From there, it only took her a few years to climb to the top step of the podium!

Vanessa distinguished herself interpreting the legendary style of fashion icon Coco Chanel. Using LUXE Paris clothing and Zuri jewelry as required by the competition, she added a bolero that she created herself!

"I love everything that is creative" confided this top model who is also a builder and photographer in Second Life.

"And I would love to participate in the creation of LUXE Paris fashion."

A wish that could well come true because LUXE Paris has a reputation for opening its doors wide for its ambassadors.

TwinkieBean & WyattFrost,
First and second runners up!

The first runner-up, TwinkieBean, made a name for herself by paying tribute to Zuri Rayna, the official jeweler of the LOOK of the YEAR competition.

"Everyone says Zuri has the charm and sophistication of a modern princess," Twinkie explained. "So I went for a regal, rich and decadent style!"

In a twist, WyattFrost, the only male to make it to the finals of this unisex competition, came in third place ahead of all the spectacular female beauties. Wyatt was honoring the unforgettable style of Frolic Mills, the SL fashion giant who was taken by cancer last fall.

"I didn't have the chance to know Frolic personally but I know from speaking to others that he will be greatly missed" Wyatt said, featuring Frolic's legendary white hair and celebrity glasses.
"But his legacy, the solid and prolific roots of SL fashion industry, lives on in what we do today and what we create for the future.”

We must also take our hats off to all the finalists because their talent combined with their passion gave rise to a great fashion moment! Ame Morningstar, Aria Absinthe, Kitty Darkrage, EleanorJean, Girasolmx, Jude Tatham, Keira Rhapsody and Tilly Opaline were all magnificent. They presented LUXE Paris fashion with respect for the brand but also with innovative and impactful creativity.

An impressive production

It is in an impressive production by One On One agency that the eleven LOOK of the YEAR finalists walked before the jury for the selection of the new LUXE Paris ambassador.

The catwalk, created by Lorez Aichi, was extraordinarily elegant, carved in white and gold marble and decorated with a Hayabusa garden by Mitsuko Kitory. The whole thing was a real showcase for the finalists and for LUXE Paris and Zuri fashion.

Now in its ninth year, the LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR competition has established itself as one of SL’s most prestigious fashion competitions largely due to its impressive and multifaceted jury, which ensures an open mind and a fair decision. The 16 LOOK of the YEAR judges select both semi-finalists and grand finalists, overseeing the competition from start to finish.

Composing the LOOK of the YEAR jury: Adonis Lubomir, owner of Swank Events and the famous groups Womenstuff and Menstuff, Avalon Chrome, LOOK of the YEAR 2020 and now designer at LUXE Paris, Blueyes Bonetto, owner of the Latin Quarter, sim host of the finale, and music director of LOOK of the YEAR events, Chemak Kamala, owner/editor of SL Confidencial, the Spanish community magazine, Dante Lisa, owner of Miss & Mister Elegance, Diana Balhaus, co-owner of One On One Agency, producer of LOOK of the YEAR events, Hunipet Delicioso, outgoing ambassador of LUXE Paris, Hyaecinte, LUXE Paris Communications director, Lanai Jarrico, owner/editor of SLEnquirer.com, Second Life’s longest-running news source, Lali Arbizu, co-Owner of One On One Agency and LOOK of the YEAR Finalists' Director, Mitsuko Kitory, owner/designer of Hayabusa, SL’s most beautiful plants, and creator of the luscious garden surrounding the runway, Naar Absinthe, LOOK of the YEAR 2017, owner of In-Nova Academy, mentor with a formidable reputation, Ponchituti Boucher, co-owner of One On One Agency, LOOK of the YEAR Executive Producer and living fashion legend, and the jewels designer Zuri Rayna, another gem shining on the fashion stars’ billboard.

TEN WOMEN FINALISTS AND ONE BRAVE MAN!
Ten women and one man! Indeed, the LOOK of the YEAR 2024 competition was, for the first time, open to men. If they seemed a little destabilized by the unisex formula of the competition, one brave man still managed to reach the final, among all these spectacular female beauties.

Starring on the 2024 LOOK of the YEAR runway: Ame Morningstar, Aria Absinthe, Catsmeow17 better known under the pseudonym of Kitty, EleanorJean, Girasolmx, Jude Tatham, Keira Rhapsody, Tilly Opaline, TwinkieBean, VanessaJane66 and gentleman WyattFrost!

"The Judges' Brunch, which took place a few weeks ago, gave us a lot of information about the personality and communication skills of each of the finalists," explain Mika Palmyra and Parisian Skytower, the co-owners and chief designers of LUXE Paris.

"They all gave a short speech on their vision of the ambassador role and the jury also had the opportunity to question them."

AN IMPOSING JURY FOR A FAIR DECISION
Sixteen judges make up the LOOK of the YEAR jury and it is the same jury that selects the semi-finalists, finalists and winners.

"We wanted an imposing jury that was present throughout the competition in order to promote a fair decision," emphasizes Mika Palmyra.

The LOOK of the YEAR jury is also diverse with members who come from different creative backgrounds such as media, music, fashion and design in general: Adonis Lubomir, Owner of Swank Events and the famous groups Womenstuff and Menstuff, Avalon Chrome, LOOK of the YEAR 2020 and now designer at LUXE Paris, Blueyes Bonetto, Music Director of LOOK of the YEAR events, Chemak Kamala, Owner/editor of the Spanish community magazine SL Confidencial, Dante Lisa, Owner of Miss & Mister Elegance and CEO Elégance Model Agency, Diana Balhaus, Co-owner of One On One Agency, producer of LOOK of the YEAR events, Hunipet Delicioso, current LUXE Paris ambassador and LOOK of the YEAR crown holder, Hyacinte, LUXE Paris Communications Director, Lanai Jarrico, Owner/Editor of Second Life’s longest-running news source The SL Enquirer, Lali Arbizu, Co-Owner of One On One Agency and LOOK of the YEAR Finalists Coordinator, Mitsuko Kytori, Owner/Designer of Hayabusa Design, SL’s most beautiful plants, Naar Absinthe, LOOK of the YEAR 2017 and Owner of In-Nova Academy, Ponchituti Boucher, Co-Owner of One On One Agency and LOOK of the YEAR Executive Producer, and Zuri Rayna, LOOK of the YEAR’s official jeweler.

A MAGNIFICENT SPECTACLE IN A GRANDIOSE SETTING
Beyond the competition and the bouquet of emotions that goes with it, LUXE Paris will also offer us a magnificent fashion show in a sumptuous setting created by Lorez Aichi and enhanced by the lush nature of Hayabusa Design.

In the background, five fashion icons who have particularly inspired LUXE Paris during its twelve years of existence: Jade Pono, a beautiful and sparkling Japanese lady, winner of LOOK of the YEAR 2022, taken by cancer last winter, the living legend Ponchituti Boucher, nicknamed "The Mother of all Models" because she discovered so many runway stars, the fabulous Zuri Rayna, jewelry designer in Second Life since 2017 and official jeweler of the competition, the extraordinary Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel who still influences fashion half a century after her death, and the unforgettable Frolic Mills, great pioneer of the SL fashion industry, magnificent character, also sadly gone.

The finalists will interpret the fashion style of these icons with LUXE Paris clothes and Zuri jewels. The judges will evaluate the finalists on their presence on stage, the quality of their look, their way of presenting LUXE Paris fashion and their ability to respond to a specific fashion order, since the icons were assigned to the finalists randomly. The performance of the finalists at the Judges Brunch will also be taken into account to evaluate their communication skills. LUXE Paris is looking for an ambassador after all!

LOOK of the YEAR A BRUNCH at LUXE Paris CASTLE

It was with joy, intelligence and humor that the 2024 finalists of the LOOK of the YEAR competition officially presented themselves, during the traditional Judges' Brunch, last month, in the Hayabusa gardens of the LUXE Paris castle.

In this grandiose setting, each of the finalists gave a short speech, explaining why they would make a good ambassador for LUXE Paris. They then had to answer the judges who kindly asked them several destabilizing questions.

The objective of this meeting was to allow the judges to familiarize themselves with the finalists' personalities, to evaluate their communication skills. Remember that LUXE Paris is looking for an ambassador for its brand, so it takes more than a pretty face to access the prestigious title of LOOK of the YEAR.

No marks were awarded at this event but the jury was invited to note their impressions in order to make an informed decision when voting for the grand finale on September 8th. In the meantime, the finalists will have modeling lessons and mentoring meetings to perfect their art.

The Grand Finale
While the Judges' Brunch was a strictly private event, the grand finale will be open to the public and promises to be a great spectacle.

In a breathtaking setting designed by Lorez Aichi, the finalists' show will pay tribute to five fashion icons who have particularly inspired LUXE Paris over its twelve years of existence.

In the spotlight, the wonderful Jade PONO, LOOK of the YEAR 2022, who passed away from cancer; PONCHITUTI BOUCHER, a living legend in the SL fashion world, who trained a myriad of runway stars; ZURI RAYNA, the official jeweler of the LOOK of the YEAR competition and creator of the tiaras offered to the winner and finalists; GABRIELLE "COCO" CHANEL, this extraordinary designer who freed women from their corset and who still influences fashion 50 years after her death, and the unforgettable FROLIC MILLS, a great pioneer of virtual fashion, another very dear friend of LUXE Paris who died of cancer last winter.

Each of the finalists must present a look composed of LUXE Paris clothing and Zuri jewelry, inspired by one of these icons. The icons were assigned to the finalists according to a random process.

Ten Women and One Man
For the first time since the creation of the competition a decade ago, it was mixed, therefore open to men, and a courageous man managed to make a place for himself among all these feminine beauties. WyattFrost will indeed be in the grand finale with Ame Morningstar, Aria Absinthe, Catsmeow17, EleanorJean, Girasolmx, Jude Tatham, Keira Rhapsody, Tilly Opaline, TwinkieBean and VanessaJane66. The new LUXE Paris ambassador can indeed be a woman or a man, LUXE Paris offers women's and men's collections.

The LOOK of the YEAR  jury will evaluate the finalists on five main points: their presence on stage, the quality of their look, their ability to respond to a specific fashion order, their way of presenting LUXE Paris and Zuri fashion and their performance at the Judges Brunch.

It is the total of the scores awarded by the judges at the grand finale that will determine who will be the next LOOK of the YEAR and win the super prize pool of L$50,000 in cash!

An Impressive Jury
The LOOK of the YEAR jury is impressive and very diverse with its sixteen members from the worlds of fashion, design, media and music: Adonis Lubomir, owner of Swank Events & the groups Womenstuff and Menstuff, Avalon Chrome, designer at LUXE Paris and LOOK of the YEAR 2021, Blueyes Bonetto, owner of Latin Quarters, our sim-host, and musical director of LOOK of the YEAR events, Chemak Kamala, owner/publisher of SL Confidencial, the magazine of the Spanish community, Dante Lisa, owner of Miss & Mister Elegance & CEO Elégance Model Agency, Diana Balhaus, co-owner of One On One Agency, producer of LOOK of the YEAR events, Hunipet Delicioso, the reigning ambassador of LUXE Paris, Hyaecinte, director of communication of LUXE Paris, Lali Arbizu, co-owner of One On One and coordinator of the finalists, Lanai Jarrico, The SL Enquirer, THE web journal, Mitsuko Kytori, Hayabusa Design, the famous gardener of the LUXE Paris castle, Naar Absinthe, owner of In-Nova Academy and LOOK of the YEAR 2017, Ponchituti Boucher, co-owner of One On One and head of the LOOK of the YEAR mentors, and Zuri Rayna, the star jeweler of LOOK of the YEAR.

Remember that both men and women can participate. If the icon is female, the male participant must simply create a look for the icon's companion and vice versa.

Do not see the icons as limits but rather as flames to ignite your

imagination. We definitely don't want carbon copies! Let your creativity run wild!

FOR WOMEN & MEN, PROS & BEGINNERS
