GOVERNOR LINDEN ANNOUNCES 2021 BID THE LINDENS BALD TEAM ROSTERS

Six Teams of Lindens & Moles Compete To Support Relay For Life

Governor Linden announced today the rosters for the six teams to compete in the 5th Annual Bid The Lindens Bald fundraising competition, in support of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Second Life.  The teams, made up of Lindens and for the 1st time, Moles, have accepted the challenge to out raise their colleagues and “Save Their Hair”.  The top fundraising team will be awarded the scissors with which they will shave the hair of the team with the lowest total.  The competitors have agreed to go bald until the SL18B celebration in June.  The fundraiser will be held May 12th through May 19th in conjunction with the Relay Rockers’ annual RelayStock multi-team event.

The Rosters of the 6 Teams are as Follows:

Team 1:  Alexa, Dottie, Izzy, Mint, Rhea, TJ, Wendi

Team 2: Cammy, Ellie, Kit, Oberwolf, Rocko, Tommy, Whitney

Team 3: Dakota, Evie, Kreide, Obi, Simon, Vanessa

Team 4: Darcy, Grumpity, Kristin, Patch, Spots, Vix

Team 5: Derrick, Hobbes, Maggie, Patsy, Theresa, Volo

Team 6 (Moles):  Abnor, Alotta, Chronos, Dion, Hazel, Itsa, Maximus, Milli, Notta, Spirit

A special Linden Bear has been created to celebrate the event. This very Limited Edition Bear will only be available at the Bid Me Bald Barn during RelayStock to anyone making a donation to one of the teams.

In 2017 Linden Lab took part in their 1st team challenge and since that time have raised more than L$3,000,000 to help the American Cancer Society Save Lives, Celebrate Lives and Lead the Fight For A World Without Cancer.  Supporters will be asked to donate to special Relay Kiosks dedicated to each team and located at the RelayStock2021 region adjacent to the American Cancer Society virtual office in Second Life. At 2pm on Wednesday May 19th the kiosks will be totaled and the official Haircutting will take place.

The original Bid Me Bald event was created by the Relay Rockers in 2007 as both a fundraiser and a show of solidarity with cancer survivors. Bid Me Bald recognizes with respect and support that chemotherapy and other lifesaving treatments can lead to side effects, notably hair loss.  Bid Me Bald participants choose to ‘shave’ their heads as an act of support and fellowship with our honored heroes.

For more information about Bid The Lindens Bald visit the Relay Rockers BTLB page

Registered Relay For Life teams who wish to participate in RelayStock can sign up for a tent or VW bus online at relayrockers.org.

MUD MUSIC & HOPE: RelayStock Returns For 8th Year!

MUD MUSIC & HOPE: RelayStock Returns For 8th Year!
Moles Join Lindens for Bid The Lindens Bald

The Relay Rockers announced the return for the 8th year of its much anticipated multi-team Relay For Life event RelayStock, May 14 – 16.  RelayStock brings together Relay teams from diverse communities across Second Life for a celebration of the Relay season.  Teams raise their banners above makeshift tents and old VW campers as they gather for 3 days of Peace Love Music and Hope. Joining the Rockers for the 5th year, Linden Lab will be participating in Bid The Lindens Bald to support the American Cancer Society and its signature fundraiser, Relay For Life of Second Life.

Teams can sign up online at RelayRockers.org beginning April 11th. Teams can choose a team site and book stage time blocks.  Each participating team can place kiosks, RFL vendors, and Gotchas at their site as part of their fundraising efforts on behalf of the ACS. “RelayStock is not only a fundraiser, although last year we raised nearly L$1.2 million with various teams collecting more than L$750,000 towards their season goals'' said Arizona Ballinger, who organizes the event for the Relay Rockers.“ it’s a well needed break in the Relay Season and allows volunteers to spend time with each other, share stories and ideas and get ready for the last push toward Relay Weekend in June.”

In addition to team events on the stage, RelayStock once again will host the Finals of the Celebrate Remember Fight-Back Top DJ Fundraising Competition. The CRFB event features Club and Radio DJs from all over Second Life as they try to see who among them can raise the most Linden$ in support of the Relay For Life. In 2020 the two finalists, DJ Baggie and DJ Kayla raised more than L$330,000 during their final sets with DJ Kayla taking home top Honors.

The last and perhaps most popular event at RelayStock is the annual Bid The Lindens Bald (BTLB21) challenge. This year the Moles will join in as Teams of Lindens  challenge each other to raise as much as they can and “Save Their Hair,” with the team with the lowest total pledging to go bald in Second Life until the annual SL Birthday event. BTLB Began in 2017 and has helped to raise more than L$ 3,000,000.   "Every year, I look forward to the Rockers' Bid Me Bald fundraiser” said Stingray Raymaker, American Cancer Society representative in Second Life, “This is one of the longest-running team fundraisers in our Relay's history and it has become a touchstone moment for so many of us. I have enjoyed watching the event grow and evolve over the years and am grateful to the Lindens for getting into the spirit of this time-tested fundraising challenge."

Click Here for This Year’s Teams (When available)

Final bidding and Official Haircutting will take place Wednesday, May 19th beginning at 12 noon.

This is a not to be a missed event and one of the annual highlights of the Relay For Life season in Second Life. Make plans now to join the volunteers who make up the 5th largest Relay event in the world at RelayStock2021 and help Bid The Lindens Bald May 14, 15  and 16.!

Rare Disease Day event in Second Life on Sunday February 28 th, 2021

Upcoming event on February 28th,  2021: Rare Disease Day in Second Life

Raising funds and raising awareness for rare diseases!

By Wesley Regenbogen in Second Life

Rare Disease Day 2021 in Second Life:

Rare Disease Day is a yearly awareness campaign in real life that is held on the last day of February each year.

Now, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I will recreate this event in Second Life.

On Sunday, February 28th,  2021  from midnight SLT until Monday, March 1st, 2021 midnight SLT, we will have live artists and DJs playing live on our venue

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tainted%20Island/156/206/2004

What is Rare Disease Day?  https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives.

The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policymakers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals, and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases.

Why is Rare Disease Day held each year? https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day

Building awareness of rare diseases is so important because 1 in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life. Despite this, there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and many go undiagnosed. Rare Disease Day improves knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision-makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases.

Key figures about rare diseases:  https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-a-rare-disease

There are over 300 million people living with one or more of over 6,000 identified rare diseases around the world1, each supported by family, friends, and a team of carers that make up the rare disease community.

Each rare disease may only affect a handful of people, scattered around the world, but taken together the number of people directly affected is equivalent to the population of the world’s third-largest country.

Rare diseases currently affect 3.5% - 5.9% of the worldwide population.

72% of rare diseases are genetic whilst others are the result of infections (bacterial or viral), allergies, and environmental causes, or are degenerative and proliferative.

70% of those genetic rare diseases start in childhood.

A disease defined as rare in Europe when it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people.

Characteristics of rare diseases

Over 6000 rare diseases are characterized by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatment. Quintessentially disabling, the patient's quality of life is affected by the lack or loss of autonomy due to the chronic, progressive, degenerative, and frequently life-threatening aspects of the disease.

The fact that there are often no existing effective cures adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families.

Common challenges

The lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on the disease often results in a delay in diagnosis. Also, the need for appropriate quality health care engenders inequalities and difficulties in access to treatment and care. This often results in heavy social and financial burdens on patients.

As mentioned, due to the broad diversity of disorders and relatively common symptoms which can hide underlying rare diseases, initial misdiagnosis is common. In addition, symptoms differ not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

Due to the rarity and diversity of rare diseases, research needs to be international to ensure that experts, researchers, and clinicians are connected, that clinical trials are multinational, and that patients can benefit from the pooling of resources across borders. Initiatives such as the European Reference Networks (networks of centers of expertise and healthcare providers that facilitate cross-border research and healthcare), the International Rare Disease Research Consortium, and the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 support international, connected research.

How can Rare Disease Day make a difference?

Rare Disease Day raises awareness for the 300 million people living with the rare disease around the world and their families and carers.

The long-term cause of the Rare Disease Day campaign is to achieve equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, health and social care, and social opportunity for people affected by a rare disease.

Important progress continues to be made with joint international advocacy efforts for universal health coverage (UHC), part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to advocate for equitable health systems that meet the needs of people affected by rare diseases in order to leave no one behind.

Rare Disease Day is the opportunity to advocate for rare diseases as a human rights priority at local, national, and international levels as we work towards a more inclusive society.

Rare Disease Day is a great example of how progress continues to be made, with events being held worldwide each year. Beginning in 2008, when events took place in just 18 countries, Rare Disease Day has taken place every year since with events being held in over 100 countries in 2019.

We hope to see you at our event for Rare Disease Day in Second Life on Sunday, February 28th,  2021!

Movember® and The Movember Foundation®

Movember® is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues. Using the mustache as the driving symbol of the movement, Movember focuses on the three key areas of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health & suicide prevention.

The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event,  housed at Movember.com and has been running Movember events since 2004.

The goal: “To Change the Face of Men's Health."

By encouraging men (whom the charity refers to as "Mo Bros") to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths in men. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Since inception, the Movember Foundation has raised $837 million and funded over 1,200 projects in more than 20 countries.

NIRVANA: RETREAT FOR BODY AND SOUL - JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

Occasionally, in my wandering about the grid, I stumble across a real gem of a build. Unique among regions, Nirvana is truly an island of peace and tranquility in the hurricane of clubs, sporting arenas, and combat sims that abound in SecondLife.  There I met Sky Wildmist, the true inspiration behind Nirvana.

Josh Bellic (JB):  So tell me, Sky.  Just what is Nirvana Island all about?

Sky Wildmist (SW):  Nirvana is about providing a place of healing and nurture of the mind-body and spirit. It is a place of peace and serenity open to all who visit without an emphasis on any single belief system, cult, or creed. Some say Nirvana is a sanctuary for your soul. Originally conceived as a home for the Forest of Eye-Blinks Group, it is now evolved and continues to do so.  Nirvana is spiritually based... diverse traditions and systems are harmoniously connected. It is a place where you can explore divergent pathways at leisure, according to your interest; a place where, when you seem to arrive at the end of a trail, another begins.
Here is what I say to people when hosting events - Nirvana is a sim dedicated to wellbeing - a not for profit sim.  If you are in need of healing, solace, or sanctuary - you will find it here. You will also discover many romantic areas with cuddles and dances for you and your lover. Solitary sits for reflection and group gatherings for a pleasant chat can also be found.

JB:  What was it that inspired you to build Nirvana Island?

SW:  I taught a troubled resident to meditate during my first weeks in SL and realized that my path in SL was to form a spiritual group.  My main avi, Isis Pleides, created The Forest of Eyeblinks on 1 Jan 2010.  Now Isis does the talks and I do the building and management. I built Nirvana Island about a year later as the group had grown and we needed a full sim to allow access to meetings. Its design came as a series of visions - based on the development of the mind-body and spirit.

JB:  You seem well laid out.  Just what are some of the activities people can do here?

SW: Well all manner of spiritual practice - meditation, chanting, Tai Chi, discussion, drumming.  We also do Healing.  Many different forms may be undertaken here in the virtual world and especially now with COVID and social distancing so prevalent, many now are more open to these things. (I have been doing virtual healing as a RL professional practice for many years).  We also have a games area, a balloon tour for two, a butterfly ride to explore the floating islands, a 2-person canoe, and riding horses and bicycles for exploration.  Many people just come to chill or dance.
JB:  So tell me.  What is this Great Tree in the middle of the island all about?
SW:  This is a replica of my first home in SL - The Great Tree of Elven Glen - I have no breathing issues personally but when I entered the canopy in the tree, I experienced a physical sensation of deeper breathing which opened my eyes to the potential the real benefit of the virtual experience.  Here also, there is here a concept of a Mother Tree on which the land's ethos is based with strong roots in the Earth-loving space and a glorious canopy representing a stable well-balanced humanity.

JB:  What has been your greatest challenge in operating Nirvana Island?

SW: My greatest challenge? Well, to be honest, the answer to that question is two-fold.
First, there are Financial Challenges. We are not for profit and the monthly tier relies on the donations of Patrons and a few residents who support what is here and why. Second, Nirvana aims to be as unconditionally loving as possible. That means setting aside assumptions and judgment. As we develop and grow, these things have to be worked on and it is not always easy.

JB:  Have you actually seen lives changed through your efforts here?

SW:  I have yes - including my own. As a professional therapist, I rarely talk about these things.  In time people can gain better balance in their lives at every level when they feel supported by a constant stable presence.  There are very many spiritual and healing sites in SL but I think Nirvana is one of the longest-running now on a constant site.
People come and go and land disappears and reforms. But when people need support at any level, they require underlying stability which is often missing.  By maintaining this site as a constant presence many who no longer visit Nirvana still support it with just a dollar a month, knowing that I will do my best to ensure that needed continuity for others. We have been recognized as one constant on the grid.

JB:  Can you share any of your success stories?

SW:  Everyone who lands on Nirvana is part of that success, although we cannot measure it scientifically. The fact that those who recognize its value sufficiently to support it financially speaks for itself and there are those who have supported for 10 years. I send them all LOVE and GRATITUDE
There have been those who come here when they are dying and help to create some areas which enriches their time and quality of life and can dull pain. One lovely gentleman created a sound garden up at spirit park for those sight challenged.
And now we have offered space to the Gardens of Absentia who logged in one day to find their land gone. They now have a new home up at Spirit Park.

JB:  Tell us about some of the events you host here?

SW:  We have many different types of activities here.  We have Open Mic Poetry, Art Appreciation, Music, Dance, Opera, Ballet. Art and Music are enormously important to wellbeing even if it is not realized. Watching and participating in the art and skill of the DEJA VU Scenic Group who perform here monthly is an amazing experience.
Musicals, ballet, contemporary dance and opera also is an experience which can be enjoyed by people in their own way. We have many different venues for dance, music and performance. Those who are unable to see can enjoy the music and those unable to hear may be able to use acoustic processing software that allows them to appreciate beat and identify sounds. at Nirvana I really try to enable and include as far as possible.

JB:  What types of events and activities do you have planned for the future?

SW:  I would like to encourage more spiritual speakers and events and some art exhibitions and Charity Events. My new Events Manager will work with me on this as the greater variety and opportunities that are here will attract those who would not normally visit a healing spiritual sim.

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

SW:  The whole island is a model - an allegory for the development of mind body and spirit as I interpret it.  Like all of us, it is constantly evolving. It is constructed on many levels both below the water and above. Nirvana is an experience for everyone to share and enjoy in their individual way. Some fly and miss it all!  Others take time and walk or ride and explore thoroughly to return often. finding what is not so obvious. There are parts of Nirvana that have never been discovered where there is a hidden gift for those who find it.  Maybe some of your readers will be the ones who find those places?"

Nirvana Island now has a google calendar for events - please see
