Happy Cinco de Mayo! Here's What's Happening Today in Second Life:

Cinco de Mayo ( May 5th) is not a federal  holiday in Mexico or the United States. However, it is still celebrated. This day commemorates the Battle of Puebla in which the Mexican army claimed victory over France during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862. In the United States and Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican Heritage with parades, festivals, traditional music and food. For others it is just another reason to get their drink on! (Even if it lands on a Thursday this year)
In Second Life, there are a few events happening but don’t forget to dress up first!

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo.
What Cinco de Mayo has come to be, is much more than one battle in the colonial history of Mexico. Rather, it has come to signify Hispanic and Mexican pride and a time to celebrate the rich culture.

Celebratig Cinco de Mayo in Second Life- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Photograph Credits: Visitrenotahoe.com
After the Mexican American War and the Reform War, the Mexican Treasury was nearly bankrupt, Banito Juarez, the then Mexican President issued a moratorium to suspend all foreign debts for two years. In response Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew their naval forces. However, France was then ruled by Napoleon III, saw it as an opportunity for a Second Mexican Empire. In the late 1861, the well-equipped French fleet won at Veracruz making the President retreat. Moving on to Mexico City, the strong 6000 French army was a defeated by 2000 ill-equipped Mexican army on May 5th, 1862 at Puebla.
Cinco de Mayo is a festival to celebrate the victory of the “Premier army in the world”. It symbolizes the unity and pride for the Mexicans to establish a much needed sense of national unity and Patriotism.

It’s Cinco De Mayo! Do You Know What it’s Really About?

Cinco De Mayo means the 5th of May in Spanish and is a national holiday observed in Mexico. It is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in which a victory against Napoleon III’s French forces occurred in 1862.

In Mexico, this day is celebrated with parades and reenactments of the battle. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is observed with week long festivities including music, dancing and lots of great food!
Avatars from around the globe in Second Life like to join in the festivities by throwing parties of their own. Here are some locations  where you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo, virtual style.

Cinco De Mayo; What’s it all About? Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Cinco De Mayo is also known as El Dia de la Batalla de Pueble. It marks a day in history when the Mexican army celebrated it’s victory over France in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco- Mexican War . It was a battle that lasted 6 years.  Since the defeat, the United States has adopted the holiday turning it onto a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture. It is very popular where there are higher concentrations of the Mexican-American populations, like Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago. It is also observed in many cities across the states. In 2005, Congress issued a concurrent resolution to the President for appropriate ceremonies and activities. Celebrations on this day include festivals, dancing,  Mexican food, drinking and mariachi performances. In Second Life it is also observed by Many.

I found a couple of places having activities for Cinco De Mayo so grab your camera and let's go party hopping. You will most likely meet new people, get involved in the festivities and have fun!

Check out whats going on this weekend!

What is Cinco de Mayo and why do we celebrate it?- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Well…If you think it is a celebration of intoxicating proportions, you are partially right, but if you wanted to get all Wikipedia nerdy about it, Cinco de Mayo is not a National or Mexican holiday nor is it Mexico’s Independence Day, like peeps might believe it to be.

The United States has taken over this unofficial holiday to give people more of  a reason to let go of their inhibitions and party on with drunken madness, but it has become commercialized.
