GeekSpeak – What will life be like in a post-scarcity world? Join the discussion Saturday, April 29th at 12pm SLT

Humanity evolved in a world of scarcity and we live in such a world now.  We know that a lot of stuff is rare and therefore valuable.  We know that none of us can have everything we want.  In a post-scarcity world that will not be true any more.

How will we live in such a world?  How much will we eat, or use, when everything is free?  What will we do with our time when work is no longer needed?  When so many things we now think of as normal, like driving or cooking or cleaning, are no longer necessary?

Would you like to live in such a world?  Do you think it is an impossible world?  Will there always be a few things that are rare and hard to acquire?

Come and join us in GeekSpeak at noon SLT on Saturday to talk about a world without scarcity.  Bring all your robot friends!

GeekSpeak – Earth: A New Hope? Join the discussion on Saturday, January 14th at 12pm SLT

In the darkest part of the year, at the start of a new one, we need to ask what will bring hope to the world.  Hope means something different for everyone and we all have our own personal hopes.  But how can we give humanity as a whole some hope for the future?  What is needed to turn the current feeling of hopelessness around?

Should we talk about all the progress that has been made in the past?  Or describe how the world will look if everything goes well? Does space exploration offer hope?  Is there an invention that would bring hope?  A book?  A movie?  Or even a pop singer?  What do we need to show us a bright future for humanity?

Join us in GeekSpeak at noon SLT on Saturday to talk about all the reasons for hope.  Bring a notebook and your friends!

GeekSpeak – Will humanity survive the next 500 years? Join the discussion Saturday August 8th at 12PM SLT

Nothing lasts forever.  And there are so many things that can go wrong for our species.

Can we survive everything that nature throws at us?  Killer viruses, rogue asteroids, a change in the orbit of the earth?

Or do we face danger from ourselves?  Nuclear war?  Or biological warfare?

Do you think we should be worried about human extinction?  What do you see as the most dangerous threat to our species?  Or do you think there is no realistic threat and we should stop worrying about total annihilation?  Come and join the discussion, and bring your friends because you will need them when the shit hits the fan!

Help me save the World-sarahelisebeth Brenham Reporting

Ladies and gentlemen, we are just a little bit into a new decade, and call me a dreamer, but I was under the impression that the problems facing many people and the World would suddenly disappear when the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2020. Boy was I wrong. But do I think that this whole new decade is now destined to be like all of its predecessors? It depends as to whether or not, we, as a society, can change our attitudes on certain things. Let me explain.

You see, as a community, we have the ability to change the World for the better or for the worse. In some aspects, we have made some amazing strides in our society, such as improvements in science and better access for education on a global scale. But, it is my belief that a few of the thoughts that we still have are casting a shadow on our accomplishments. What are these ideas, you ask? Why don’t we examine them one by one, shall we?

Right now, our World is so divided due to politics and religious practices. I have just one question: Why can’t we just respect each-other’s views, as long as they don’t condone harm to anyone, including themselves? This my friend is what we call tolerance. Not to be confused with acceptance, which we will talk about in just a moment, but tolerance is simply being considerate of people who are different than you. If tolerance was practiced by everyone, society would be well on its way to healing.

Now, let’s discuss acceptance. We, as humans, are social creatures by nature. But, in order for one to be social, you must be made included by at least a few people. Now, this is where the current problem of trying to be accepted by others starts. Over the last few years, people have gone to great lengths in the attempt to make others like them. With that being said, I am curious as to what it’s going to take for people to start to value the uniqueness that each and every person in this World has. It is my hope that it doesn’t take a tragic event for society to begin to accept people for exactly who they are and relish in the benefits of someone’s individuality.

While 2020 didn’t start the way that I thought it would, I still have hope that the community can make the changes needed in their behavior to make this decade the best the World has ever seen. Because after all, if we don’t have hope, then what do we have? So, I am counting on all of you to do your part. I will be doing mine.

GeekSpeak – Is there Hope for Humanity? Join the discussion about COVID-19- March 21st at 12pm SLT

We all know by now about the threat that faces us all.  But let’s try to be positive and talk about the possible good that may come from the virus.  Will we learn more about how to develop cures and vaccines?  That should help us when the next ‘big one’ strikes.
Will we come together as neighbours and start re-finding our humanity?  Will war and terrorism become less likely now that we all have a common enemy?  Will co-operation between countries increase?

Come and discuss the threat and the answers to it in a guaranteed virus-free auditorium.  Bring your friends!

GeekSpeak – What would be the best thing that could happen to humanity? Join the discussion March 23rd at 12pm SLT

This week we will look at the future through rose-tinted glasses and discuss the positive things that could happen to us.  What single event, what single change, will improve all our lives most?  Use your imagination and tell us what you hope for.

Nuclear fusion?  A movie that turns everyone into vegetarians?  Vulcans landing on the earth?  Being able to stop the extinction of animal and plant species?  A cure for all diseases?  The end to all religion?  The elixir of life?  Telepathy?  A colony on Mars?

You decide what you hope for most and what you expect to happen.  Tell us also what the timeline is.  When is it likely to happen?  Bring your notebook.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have any ideas for new subjects.

GeekSpeak: how will humanity end? Join the discussion on March 16th at noon SLT

What fate do you most fear for our species?  Do you see the earth being destroyed by an asteroid or a solar flare, a black hole or collision with a rogue planet?  Or will we die a slow, agonizing death from a killer virus?  Or cause our own demise by a worldwide nuclear war?  Or will we slowly die out simply because we lack the will to survive or have children?

Most people expect that humanity will one day give way to another species.  How will that happen?  And what species will it be?  Will we maybe give way to our own AI creations and see them take over the world?

What fate are you most afraid of?  Or do you think that somehow some of us will always survive?  Come and discuss all the ways to our end, on this blue marble in space.  Bring an umbrella.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have ideas for new subjects.

GeekSpeak: What happens if we discover alien life? Join the discussion Saturday September 22nd at 12pm SLT

What if we discover life on other planets?  On Mars or in the Solar system or maybe light years away.  Maybe alien bacteria or maybe intelligent beings.  How will it affect our understanding of our own place in the universe?

Will we want to destroy them?  Or will we want to isolate ourselves from them so that they cannot destroy us?  Will we want to trade with them?  Make peace with them?

Will our religions change because we contact alien life?  Will they have religions that will change?  Or will they try to convert us?

Come and discuss the future of Earth.  Your humanity will be checked at the entrance.

Best wishes
Kathen
