Got a new mesh head and/or body and you are not sure where to start? Or perhaps you are looking for a fresh new look? We've all been there, tweaking our shapes and making continuous adjustments resulting most often with mediocre results. Some of us manage to create a decent form but bento can be finicky at times and creating that perfect look can be very time-consuming and discouraging too. A good shape is so important; it's what defines us in this pixel world. Unfortunately like in real life (RL), there is shallowness and so many of us are judged by how we look even in Second Life (SL).  UpBeatZ Shapes can save us many headaches! They offer reasonably priced shapes for Catwa, Genus, Lelutka, and many more! Their prices are mega affordable at 99L per shape and each come with their own styling cards but what hit me the most about UpBeatZ Shapes is their motto "You are beautiful, You are Strong, You Are Loved" those positive affirmations are needed and appreciated even in SL. Kudos to the owner Mel for recognizing that such positivity is important no matter what world we live in. Meeting the owner Mel for the first time was amazing! She is so passionate, kind, and very friendly. I really wanted to know more about her and UpBeatZ Shapes.

Roxy Mystic: It is such a pleasure to be able to meet with you again Mel and learn more about UpBeatZ Shapes. I have to admit that I am so impressed with you as a person and how you are running this business. It is obvious that you have a big heart, even the name is upbeat! I need to ask where does this amazing positive energy comes from and why is it so important for it to be shared here in SL?

ღMelღMelღ:  That is a very good question. I do not see SL just as some pixel world, I see each person here as a heart that needs attention and love that deserves care and equal attention. In my own personal life history, I learned that you must love yourself and feel good about yourself and sometimes you need a few inspiring words to help stay positive (hence my motto) because my motto is so true. Beauty comes from within first. I have never considered myself as having the most beautiful shapes here in SL but I put every effort into making them as beautiful as I can.  I do see myself as offering others a chance to feel more beautiful with a new shape. But I want each person to know they are already beautiful too!

Roxy Mystic: I am sure you did not wake up one day and decide you were going to make shapes in Second Life, there must have been a progression of sorts. Can you describe your journey? And when were UpBeatZ Shapes officially started?

ღMelღMelღ:  I was inspired by watching many other shape creators in SL. I have always loved design work outside of SL and in SL as well. I enjoyed building but just never went anywhere with it. I love shopping and always enjoyed experimenting and playing with skins; believe me when I say I shop for tons of skins! So one day, I started playing more and more with the shapes and thought well, there are so many new people coming into SL that perhaps cannot afford expensive shapes and even those already here don't want to spend too much on shapes. So I decided to keep my prices low and I love knowing people are smiling when they put on a shape that I designed and feel good with it. It warms my heart when they message me and say they are happy. When they are happy I am happy and that is how it should be.

Roxy Mystic: I have so much respect for shape designers. Not only are you designing a face and also sometimes a body but you are also creating a full avatar look!  I can only imagine the investment involved such as skins, hair, and eyes that are needed to bring a shape to perfection. Can you describe the process without giving us the recipe? For example, how long does it take from the beginning to the end in getting a shape to market? Do you have a vision before you start?

ღMelღMelღ:  I don't usually have a vision of what the shape will look like, I normally start working on the head first then work my way down. Shapes vary from start to finish some are more difficult than others. Depending on the mesh head, some take more time to shape than others as there are more tools and huds to work with. It can take anywhere from 2 hours to a full day sometimes to make a great shape and get it boxed to sell.

Roxy Mystic:  Second Life has so many mesh head and body options out there, it is very difficult to decide which is best. Is there a body or head that you prefer working with? And if yes, can you tell us which ones and why?

ღMelღMelღ: Another good question and one that is honestly hard to answer. I think I'd have to swing in the direction of LeLutka though. I find the LeLutka heads easy to work with as well as easier to shape. Don't get me wrong, I do love a good challenge with the other heads at times and I am often challenged with Lelutka too! Catwa's HDPRO is amazing as well and it offers so many fun new tools for shaping their hud. However, skins are not available nearly as much for Catwa HDPRO as they are for LeLutka.

Roxy Mystic:  It is important for our SL Enquirer readers to know that UpBeatZ Shapes focuses on both women and men shapes of every culture and lifestyle. I think that is amazing and very important. I will share with you why this is paramount.  In 2019 New World Notes blogged that traffic and users of SL were from the following top ten countries: United States, Brazil, Turkey, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Canada, France, Netherlands, and Italy. I am sure these statistics have changed a bit since then but it still gives you an idea as to how diverse we are in this pixeled world. Does this surprise you?

ღMelღMelღ: This does not surprise me at all, in fact at UpBeatZ Shapes we've focused our shapes on every race and culture right from the start.  We want everyone to know that equality is so important to us. I am so excited and so proud to announce that we have a new line of LGBTQ shapes coming soon as well as a new line of Breast Cancer Survivors shapes.  We want every man and woman of every race, culture and from all walks of life to feel welcome and right at home here at UpBeatZ Shapes. We are strong advocates in raising awareness to end Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence is never EVER acceptable. Roxy this is one big world and with the pandemic going on right now and so many people being forced to stay home, we are all in here together. This is where we all really need to show our love and support to one another, no matter our race, culture, sexual choices, it doesn't matter, UpBeatZ and I want everyone to know you are Loved.

Roxy Mystic: Very well said Mel and I totally agree. Let's talk about your prices, good heavens! UpBeatZ Shapes has such amazing prices! The shapes are modifiable and you also provide a styling card as well. I cannot believe you are selling them for 99L! I need to ask why?

ღMelღMelღ: Why not? Why do I need to break someone's pocket? I am not here to gain a dollar, I am here to gain a smile.

Roxy Mystic: Mel, you are clearly putting in lots of hours, investment and hard work into UpBeatZ Shapes and to be honest with your low prices I get the feeling this is not about money as you just said you prefer seeing smiles. Why are you doing this and please share with us your dreams and goals.

ღMelღMelღ:  You are correct Roxy. While making money is great for everyone and yes I have invested lots to get UpBeatZ Shapes started.  My dream is to be able to offer over 1,000 shapes in a year from now and then be able to relax knowing that there are tons of people smiling and saying I am Beautiful, I am Strong, I am Loved!

Roxy Mystic: I noticed that many of your shapes on your vendor boards have smiling faces. Can you explain why?

ღMelღMelღ:  I love this question. First, let me clarify when I sell my shapes, I make sure when I include a smiling shape photo in my package that the client knows it is done for a photo/promotional purpose. Unfortunately, huds do not permit smiles of this nature on our mesh heads. So to answer your question, we always see shapes for sale with normal and limited animations; we walk into stores and all we see are straight serious faces.  Even though there are welcome signs and we sometimes see store bots welcoming us, I wanted something different by displaying pictures of happy-looking avatars. When my customers come in, I want them to instantly feel happy. They say a smile is infectious and contagious so hopefully seeing this makes everyone happy when they visit UpBeatZ Shapes. That is what all of this is about, being happy. I just want everybody happy.

Roxy Mystic: I always like my last question to be a little fun! Would you call yourself a shape-shifter? Also, do you have a shape that is you or do you change your look all the time?

ღMelღMelღ:  Well, funny you ask this because there are times I'll make a shape and say "I seriously do not want to take this one off and claim it as my own". Ten minutes later it's boxed and I have no choice but to start another shape. It's a cycle, then the next day I've fallen in love with several other shapes. There is one I have made recently that is my favorite but if I say her name I will jinx myself and end up making another that I will like more!

UpBeatZ Shapes is quite an amazing business with an equally amazing owner who only wishes to spread happiness and smiles with the avatar shapes she designs.  I'd like to emphasize that UpBeatZ Shapes are proud supporters of Stop Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer.  As mentioned earlier, the designer's motto is "You are beautiful, You are Strong, You are Loved" those positive affirmations are very visible at the store and certainly welcoming.  The owner Mel likes to say that she is proud to offer these unbelievable prices of great quality and love. There are currently two locations with more coming and you can also find them at the Vanity Fair event from March 15th to April 8th. It's certainly worth the visit or in this case, come over and share your smile!

Upgrading to Mesh -Sarahelisebeth Brenham Reporting

Are you ready to upgrade your avatar to mesh, but don't know where to start? And just what is Bento? Well, today is your lucky day, as I will be explaining to all of the ladies out there (gentlemen many of these stores offer male versions) just what is available to make your body and face mesh. So without further ado, let's get started!

To make things easier for all involved, I will breaking up this big topic into categories. If you are interested in a specific subgroup, just scroll down.

What is Bento exactly? Simply put, Bento is an extra set of bones. This could be seen best in the hands and in the face. Those who use Bento, especially enjoy the facial feature, as they are able to create a truly personalized face; even more so than a system one.

Maitreya Lara- This body is what I have seen those who are in the fashion industry has. It comes with several skin preset skin tones and nail options. SPRO TIP: Do you see a line between your head and your neck? Get rid of it by clicking neck fix on the hud that Maitreya Lara comes with.
Price:  L$2,750

This company sells three different bodies: Venus, Isis and Freya and are Bento. These bodies pretty much work the same as Maitreya Lara, except they are Bento and more customization for their skins is available.
Price: L$4,499

This business offers two types of bodies: Physique and Physique Hourglass. As with the other two bodies, they operate in the exact same manner. But, the things that make these special is that those who are furries can also use these.
Price: L$1,250

This store has several bodies for sale: Perky, Feminine and Pregnancy Edition. While these still work like the ones that I mentioned, they also allow clothing that are made for other mesh bodies to fit theirs.
Price: L$5,000.

This shop offers many different types of bodies and they all come with heads. All are Bento as well. They too work just like all of the other bodies that I have mentioned.
Price: L$4,899.

Catwa-Bento and a non-Bento versions of these heads is available. Mesh heads do operate just like mesh bodies, as in the way that it comes with a hud that has preset skin tones, lipsticks, hair bases, and blushes. Skins, makeup, and hair bases that are made for Catwa or are Omega Compatible or Baked On Mesh can be bought to change up your look.
Prices range from L900-L$5,000

This shop sells many different types of heads and work just like the Catwa head.
Price: L3,990

But whoa! Wait a minute! I just bought a mesh body and/or ahead, but how the heck do I wear it/them? I probably should have started with that huh? But to answer your question, If your body and/or head is/are not already in a folder in your inventory, find it/them in your Objects folder and rez it/them on the ground. Right-click on the box on the floor and select copy into inventory. Once the product folders are your inventory, find the body and/or head and the appropriate alphas and wear them all. Vioala!
Do you want some extra help in creating the perfect look for you or perhaps are just too overwhelmed with all of the options available? I sat down with a person who transforms people into gorgeous beings. Read on to learn more about this amazing woman.

sarahelisebeth Brenham: It's an accepted fact that you are an expert in blending skin tones from a different body and head, such as Maitreya and Catwa together seamlessly to create a beautiful look. Could please explain how to do this.

NANY Jurado: Hello, thank you for the invitation to give my opinion on this subject that I am so passionate about.I tell you that I have been an image consultant in second life for more than 4 years, where I give my knowledge in skin tones and remember the different stores that have variety and look for the best option for each person.I also like to explain each step I make in each makeover, I like to hear the person's voice, you know their favorite colors, which are tastes in hair and eye color if they have any reference. There is a host of details that I like to know so that I can find the best option for each person. Likewise, I guide or indicate if they do not know how to use the applicators, hud be of the head and body with all the pleasure, I show them step by step how to learn to use it and thus achieve details and a magnificent appearance unique to each person.

SB:  In your opinion, what do you feel are the best bodies and heads on the market right now?

NJ: Wonderful question I would like to be very sincere in this way of image consultant, most of the body and heads have gone through my work platform and as new products come out I investigate them and let me tell you that they all have details that make it all pleasant They are good since they give the possibility that each person take his own personality give that touch of difference in this wonderful world. As an image consultant I love my work and here I give you the option that you feel unique and harmonious with your beautiful appearance in this virtual world.

SB: If someone wants to hire you to make them over, What would your fee be?

NJ: L$2,500. 2 hours where I edit if shape, we look for skin, hair, eyes, I teach how to use the applicators and doubts that come, I advise on the appropriate clothing and I take it to stores if it is necessary to look for his new image and much more

So there you have it, my guide to upgrading your avatar to either partial mesh or fully mesh. Happy shopping!

Looking for the perfect home? Ariadknee Resident Reporting

Many of us have owned a home or two, or more!  I am one of those who collect well built homes in Second Life, why you may ask? I have no idea!  I think it’s like a shoe “thing” or maybe it’s the wonderful textures that catch my eye, one thing I do know when I see it, is good quality price and prims!

There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a house in Second Life –

  • size of the land you are wanting to place the house on
  • prim allowance (remember you need to keep some spare for rezzing other things)
  • style, depending where you are renting your land you may need to adhere to a certain style of housing

I went shopping to find what I would consider five great home & skybox stores in SL that were also value for money and good on the prim count.

Here are five great house and skybox businesses -

I managed to catch up with the owners and asked them what they felt was most important to them when creating a house.  Read on and see how their styles separate them all in a unique way.

Trompe Loeil

My first visit was to Trompe Loeil owned by Cory Endo, the lovely spacious store and grounds is a great showcase for all the houses.

I find the houses at Trompe Loeil to be of high quality and the textures are very realistic and the few times I have needed some help Cory was prompt with her replies and very helpful.

“The most important thing to me when creating a house is picking a design that is interesting, unique, and appeals to the sense of style and escapism that people look for in SL. SL is a place where you can experiment with builds that wouldn't or couldn't work as your real home, either for cost or location, weather or structure style, but people still want homes that are evocative of real spaces” Cory Endo

[BE] Barnesworth Anubis

Established in 2004 I have owned many [BE] Homes in my time, and when you visit the
sim you will see why, there is a distinct air of elegance and old-world charm mixed with the new mesh designs that will keep your prim pockets happy.

There is something for everyone, with antique homes and classic mansions.  One of my very first purchases was his “beach house” and it still holds strong with the new designs as one of my favourites.
Barnsworth Anubis is always happy to help, so contact him so he can reply in his personable manner.

“I always put the most importance on the interior layout. I make a rough sketch of the rooms and walk around in it in world to see how it feels. I do my best to imagine what each area might be used for and make sure the home has a nice flow from one type of space to another.”  - Barnsworth Anubis

Scarlet Creative

A visit to Scarlet Creative greets you with a distinctive old-world charm and elegance, owner Charlotte Bartlett puts her heart and soul into her creations and it shows, from skyboxes to mansions and rugged rustic builds there is a home to suit everyone.

“For me it is really about putting a little piece of my heart into what I create so people know they are made with love.   People come into SL for many reasons, to have fun, or escape, or socialize across the world. So, to have the opportunity to provide them a design that makes their SL time special is very dear to me.” - Charlotte Bartlett

Dust Bunny

No inventory is complete without something from Dust Bunny, with its magical manors and cute chic skyboxes Dust Bunny’s eclectic style stands alone.

The romantic and cosy is what is aimed at with Dust Bunny homes and owner lxlNoel Resident makes sure she covers all those details when creating a home just for you.

lxlNoel Resident is always there to back up her quality builds with personal service.

“The most important thing for me when I create a house is making sure I have plenty of details inside and out to make the space feel cozy and a place you want to live in.”  lxlNoel Resident

Roost is a household name in SL when it comes to homes, with their undeniably classic, and well-made homes you can find one to suit all your needs, prim size and you also can’t beat the quality there. From mansions, cosy homes and beach side dwellings coupled with the accessories and little touches, you can come home to roost anytime (pun intended).

If you need some good old-fashioned customer support contact RoostHomes Resident, who is happy to help.

“I guess for us function is the most important thing, since you can draft out the most beautiful house plan in Real Life...but it doesn't necessarily work for Second Life and the camera view as you walk. So that for us takes a lot of consideration and adjusting to make a home that's beautiful but will work for the avatars and in-world limitations.” - RoostHomes Resident

I am absolutely in awe of these amazing creators who help bring our SL dreams to life with their builds and the love they put into them. It was my pleasure to present them and chat to the owners.

This is of course only a few of the many talented creators who design and sell houses and skyboxes in second life.

I hope this helps you and I wish you well whenever you are house hunting.

Don't tell anyone but I purchased a new house on my ventures around these businesses, how could I resist?

Trompe Loeil

Two Heads are better than one - Pandora reporting

I never thought that I would find my original Pandora especially not in Mesh and now that there were two of me I knew I would be in for a lot of work. Neither avatar wore the same outfit or hair as I wanted them both to have their own look and style.
Pandora’s Poppy really nailed it. She had the cute sexy thing going for her and it suited her perfectly. The new Pandora, which I simply referred to as V1, took on a more sexy, classy approach. Considering that was how she looked in her classic days it seemed like the obvious way to go.
Something was missing with V1 as much as she looked like the old Pandora I couldn’t work out what the issue was. Then I realised she needed a different head because the Poppy one wasn’t  exactly right for her.
I went to LAQ to get more demos. The story of my life these days or should I say my Second Life. I teleported back home to check out all of the demos. Finally I settled on the Neve head luckily this one didn’t need any further tweaking. I went to LAQ again to buy the head and then home to complete my project.

V1 had now become Pandora’s Neve. It’s as though I have this alt stuck in my inventory that I bring to life every now and then. Alts may have different personalities depending on their creators but two versions of an avatar? That is a whole new situation and one that I hadn’t encountered before let alone thought of. I have two alts already so having a different version of me can get complicated at times.
Pandora’s Poppy earned the nickname of V2 just to make it easier even though she was the first Mesh avatar that I created. V1 had been there since the days of classic avatars and I still have one saved version of her tucked away.

I am enjoying my SL this time around however a word of advice to the newbies out there. Don’t go making half a dozen alts or several versions of yourself just because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Trust me you’ll go crazy … I have and there’s no going back.
