It is time to paint the grid purple!! Paint SL Purple, the official lead in to the 2015 Relay For Life of Second Life season, will take place between February 21 and March 7, 2015.  Throughout this time, Second Life avatars are invited to paint their homes, businesses, clubs, and land purple, wear purple clothes, purple hair, and even purple skin!

Second Life avatars  can pick up the official Paint SL Purple kit at the American Cancer Society Island. This special kit contains purple freebies to help you celebrate the week. Team registration for the 2015 Relay For Life of Second Life Season opened on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. Prospective Team Captains can register their teams at the official Relay For Life of Second Life Website: www.relayforlifeofsecondlife.org.  Relay For Life of Second Life is an official charity of the American Cancer Society.

The theme of the 2015 Relay For Life of Second Life season is “The Future is Now” and for this relay season, each team will be required to have at least a Team Captain and a Team Co-Captain. An email address is required to complete your team’s registration and a separate registration is needed for the online fundraising system, Convio.

Team Captains who successfully completes team registration, between February 11 and March 7 2015, will receive a special “Early Bird” Registration Trophy and Plaque. Potential Team Captains who may need assistance in registering a team can contact Veruca Tammas, the 2015 Teams Ambassador for Relay For Life of Second Life.

Relay Rockers Announce 2015 CRFB Top DJ Competition Schedule and Return of Relay d’Alliez

 (Arinultra Cay) The Relay Rockers executive committee held its 2015 organizing meeting and selected Sue Peregrine as the 2015 Team Captain. The daughter of Alliez Mysterio and CEO of dAlliez Estates, Sue has been a member of the team since its inception in 2005. The team also announced its plans to once again host the very popular Celebrate Remember Fight Back Top DJ Competition and to provide, with dAlliez Estates, Relay d’Alliez as a venue for teams to host Relay fundraising events during the 2015 season. The 4th annual CRFB Top DJ competition is a fundraising contest, challenging online DJs to raise the most donations for the American Cancer Society during a series of 1 and 2 hour sets.

Nearly 50 DJs from all over Second Life have taken part in the contest since it began in

2012 and the CRFB competition has raised over L$6,000,000 to support the Relay For Life of Second Life.

According to Competition Director and Rocker CoCaptain Ariel Stormcrow, the Rockers will once again be inviting Second Life music venues to be “Partner Venues” and host preliminary rounds of the competition. She also stated that, in response to suggestions, the team will provide for the use of Dual Team Kiosks during the preliminary rounds for competitors who are registered members of another Relay For Life team. Online registration for the competition, which will run from late March through May, will open during the first week of February and will be open to the first 16 competitors. Relay d’Alliez, which the team made available in 2014 through an arrangement with their premier sponsor dAlliez Estates, will once again be available as a fundraising event venue for registered teams. Teams will be able to reserve the sim in parcels or its entirety beginning with Kick off Week through event weekend in July. The Rockers, who are entering their record setting 11th consecutive season plan to continue their signature event, Bid Me Bald, with team cofounders Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas the initial ‘Victimteers’

Their Barbershop Kiosks will be set up on March 11th and 18th, respectively with their shearing to occur one week hence. The Rockers also plan to hold RelayStock ‘15 as a multi team event and invite all teams to begin planning to attend.

Party Like You're Beating Cancer- Stacey Cardalines Reporting…

Hi, everyone. I apologize for shutting down the Sports and Leisure desk for so long, but I got heavily into tennis. If you are making a living as a SL tennis hustler, it's hard to go back to online media. I also wanted to get Homeland Security off my ass, as I was the SL Enquirer reporter who was covering the Arab Spring when the CIA was making avatars and investigating SL looking for terrorists. I did some lay-low time, and now I'm back to take a few more scalps. It's good to be back, too.

One of the reasons it is good to be back is that I get to help out charities, like the Relay For life people.

The Relay For Life is a community based fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society. It is their most successful fundraiser, and is their signature event. There are over 5000 RFL taking place across 20 countries, and they make a ridiculous (I hear "five billion" a lot when I research) amount of money for the cause.

SL has charitable minded people, such as the SLCS, aka the Second Life Cheerleader Squad. The SLCS has been working with RFL since I knew them, and they were my first assignment at this paper back in 2009 or so. I'm technically a member of the squad, although I'm too clumsy to do cheers and am actually better suited towards wrestling or football. 

As you might imagine, their principal job is to train cheerleaders and them have them cheer at events. When there are no events to cheer for, they organize their own events, like RFL fundraisers. They do one almost every month, and have raised thousands and I might even guess tens of thousands of L$ for the cause.

I was at their party last night. It was an all-day event with about 12 hours of different musical guests. I should have published a note earlier and got them some publicity, but, like I said, I've been really into tennis lately. 

I'll eliminate that error right now. Their next event is October 26th, and we'll have a full listing of events soon enough.

Announcing the 7th Annual Home and Garden Expo- September 16-28th 2014

Home and Garden Expo 2014, benefitting RFL of SL, opens on September 16, and runs through the 28th. Spread over nine sims, HGE features the finest in Second Life Home and Garden design product and creator tools. Over 85 participating creators have joined HGE, one of the first mega-events of the 2015 Relay For Life fundraising drive in Second Life.

Relay For Life of Second Life is in its tenth season, as Second Life residents across the grid band together to raise funds for Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society. The funds raised go to finance cancer research. During the 2014 season, RFL of SL broke the $415,000.00 USD mark for total funds raised.

This year’s HGE is supported by nine Platinum Sponsors and eight Gold Sponsors. It also includes, for the first time, a comprehensive shopping guide listing all donation items, new releases, hunt, raffle and gatcha items. New rules and a new layout for HGE reduces lag and provides ample display space for each of the participants’ products.

The 2014 HGE features the debut of the Rezzie Awards. The Rezzie Awards are specifically designed to honor the excellent work of the designers, creators, coders, and builders who make Second Life so visually stunning and interactive, and who inspire roleplay, photography, machinima, and so much more.    

Nominations were open to the public through September 12th. The awards jury then selected 4 nominees to represent each of 35 categories. The nominated works are listed on the website and visitors are invited to vote for their choices there. (HGE Staff members will be excluded from the final list of nominees, and are not eligible for awards.) Voting commenced on September 14th, and will remain open through September 27th.The winners will be announced just prior to the close of Home Expo on September 28th!

Winners will receive an exclusive, customized trophy, designed by Reven Rosca.  The Rezzie Awards are organized by Fallacy DeCuir, and audited by Fallacy DeCuir, Kat Alderson and DeAnn Dufaux.

Everyone in Second Life has a unique story. How they discovered the virtual world and what inspired them to do what they do various from person to person.  Some may see Second Life as just another online game and to others it is much more than that.

Trader1 Whiplash is a cancer survivor and an avatar whose name is familiar to many who are involved in Relay for Life in Second Life. He is also co owner of T1 Radio and a founding member of Relay Rockers. Together with his best friend Nuala Maracas, they have worked tirelessly in the Second Life community with T1 Radio and Relay for Life events. 

It is people like them that add humility, purpose and inspiration to this virtual world, but you don’t have to take SLE’s words for it.

Home and Garden Expo- September 16-28th 2014

Home and Garden Expo (HGE) raises money for Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL). Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event, and RFL of SL is one of its virtual counterparts.

You can get more information about RFL of SL here: http://relayforlifeofsecondlife.org/ .

Exhibitors are required to have two new products at HGE.  These two items must be exclusive to the event for the duration of the event.  EVERY item sold at the HGE must be sold from an RFL official shared vendor. These vendors are preset to different percentage increments (20, 40, 60, 80 or 100) and each exhibitor can choose whichever percentage they deem appropriate.  Exhibitors may elect to participate in the 100% donation raffle, auction, and paid hunts, as well.

Relay Weekend - July 19 to July 20, 2014!

Get ready for Relay Weekend! 
Celebrating 10 years of raising funds for cancer research

In less than two days, thousands of Second Life Residents from all across the real globe will join together on July 19 and 20 for the 10th Relay Weekend of Relay For Life of Second Life and celebrate .

“It’s incredible to see how this Relay has grown over the last 10 years,” said Stingray Raymaker, American Cancer Society staff partner. “That first year, 2005,  there were 315 Avatars walking the track to bring attention to the importance of  cancer research. This year more than 3,000 will take to the track. Come on out and see what has become the largest fundraiser in SL and other virtual worlds.”

Relay Weekend will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19 and will feature 24 hours of themed laps, activities and entertainment. The weekend will wrap up with a massive party at 1 p.m. PDT Sunday, July 20.
