Second Chance - Episode One - by Lacy Muircastle

Second Chance is book #2 in the Second Life© Love Stories series.  This book is taking the form of a serial.  I intend posting an excerpt of an episode a week in the SL Enquirer.

Here we go:

Second Chance
Episode One
Seb Livingstone
I teleported into the club as I’d done many times since discovering Second Life©.  I hadn’t felt this nervous for a while.  I enjoyed singing covers, but tonight would prove whether I could still hack it with my own stuff.

My IM pinged.  Damn not now.

Stacey Windsong:  Hey, baby, how’re you?
Seb Livingstone: Good thanks, Stace, just getting ready for BB’s.
Stacey Windsong:  Oh, I don’t have anything booked for you for today?
Seb Livingstone:  I made the booking myself.
Stacey Windsong:  I see.  And I’m not important enough for you to tell me what you’re doing?
Seb Livingstone:  Please don’t start.  Look, I have to go.  Come here if you want to, if not I’ll catch up with you later.
            More pinging.

Blue Benelli:  Hey, Seb, how're things swinging?
Seb Livingstone: Hey, B, do you really wanna know. Lol.
Blue Benelli: *Laughs* You ready then?
Seb Livingstone: Oh yeah.
Blue Benelli: Break a leg buddy.  Give me a yell when you’re ready for me to announce you.
Seb Livingstone: Cool.
BB’s was a simple, uncomplicated venue that has graced Second Life© since late 2008. It was Blue’s mission in Second Life© to provide one hundred per cent live music all the time.  I was following – The music whisper – Russell Eponym, and after my set, Pol Arida would be taking his thumping set centre stage.   I oriented my avatar on the stage behind the mic.   My breathing became rapid and shallow.  My pulse pounded in my temples.  I sat on the stool in the middle of my home studio. The laptop set up to stream my music in-world.  This was it, make or break.

I typed in Blue’s IM:

Seb Livingstone:  I’m ready to roll B.

Blue switched to voice -Hey everyone, good to see you all here.  Give a huge round of applause to my boy Dr Livingstone.”
Applause and cheers ran up my screen.  I looked out from the stage, at the packed club.  The buzz was invigorating.   It never got old seeing people waiting for me to start a set.  There was nothing quite like an enthusiastic audience to get the blood pumping.  I loved performing.  I was addicted to the adrenalin rush.  It made me feel alive.
How are we this afternoon?”
The crowd erupted.   Chants of – ‘Dr Livingstone, Dr Livingstone’ and ‘Sing ‘Tears’ sing ‘Tears’ and applause rained down the screen again.
Yeah, yeah J, it’s in the set, but today I’m launching two new songs. ‘Avatar’ is the first one I’ll sing for you.  No prizes for guessing my inspiration for this song.”
Cheers flowed again. Then the crowd quietened as my music stream came through.

You’re beautiful, you’re gorgeous
You’re an avatar,
Lifelike, surreal
Ethereal, how bizarre
Here one minute
Gone the next

The crowd applauded wildly. Catcalls and shouts of TUUUNE ran up the screen.

On my own in my home studio, I fist-pumped the air.  Yes.  The feeling never got old.

“Glad you liked it, and for my next new song.  No prizes for noticing a bit of a theme going on is called Virtual Reality.”

Humans will always be humans
Whether they be pixels or
Living breathing beings
Virtual reality no responsibility
What an opportunity

Comments like - Dr Livingstone, is there going to be a new album?” and “Where can we buy those tracks?” ran up the screen like credits at the end of an epic movie.
I felt stoked that my new material had met with such vocal approval.  I closed my eyes and let the crowd’s reaction wash over me.  It was the jump start I needed and how it was supposed to be.  I still had it.
I could take it into the real world.  My second chance was going to happen.
My computer continued to ping with comments and accolades — what a rush.
To answer some of your questions, you can buy the tracks as singles off iTunes, and it’ll be on Genius and YouTube, and yes, I’ll be working on a new album.  I’m hoping to get signed to a label soon.”

     Requests poured in.

Okay everyone here’s the one you’ve been waiting for.  “Tears”.
I braced myself for the wash of emotion it always launched on me and clung to my microphone as though it could save me from being carried away.

Tears, tears, inevitable
Smiles there were a few
And when the tears ran out
We were numb and so blue

Why, why, why, shattered dreams
Why, why, why, shattered dreams

The crowd roared in appreciation.  But this song would forever haunt me.  It was a constant reminder of the past, of disappointment and the despair that had followed.

My IM pinged:

Stacey Windsong: You okay?
Seb Livingstone: Are you here at BB’s?
Stacey Windsong: Obviously.
Seb Livingstone:  Thanks. I didn’t see you. There are so many people here.  And yes, I’m okay.
Stacey Windsong:  Why do you keep singing that song?  You know it’s not good for you.
Seb Livingstone:  It’s difficult to say no to the audience.
Stacey Windsong: Oh, please, Seb, I think you're just masochistic.
Seb Livingstone:  What about the two new songs, did you catch them?
Stacey Windsong: I did.
Seb Livingstone: And?
Stacey Windsong:  They’re not bad.

I frowned at my screen.  Hell.  Not bad, what the fuck?

Seb Livingstone:  Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Stacey Windsong:  You know that I don’t think you should still be singing after everything you’ve been through.
Seb Livingstone:  And you know that’s not going to happen.
Stacey Windsong:  I’m here to keep an eye on you, make sure you don’t fall off the tracks again.
Seb Livingstone: I can hardly forget since you remind me all the time.
Stacey Windsong:  You should be putting all your effort into getting a real job in the real world.  None of this virtual world malarkey.  It’s a waste of your time and mine.
Seb Livingstone:  I didn’t ask you to be here.
Stacey Windsong: Excuse me, that’s unnecessary.  I too have a vested interest in you, so I want to know that you’re okay.
Seb Livingstone:  There’s no need for you to be in SL to know that I’m okay since you see me in real life.  Please do us both a favour and leave.

Awakening The SL Movie Project and Doc Grun” -Saoirse Heart reporting...

There is an exciting new project on the grid being made entirely in Second Life.  Doc Grun [Douglas W. Green) it the author Awakening.  Working with Lou CasaBianca as director/publisher, he is bringing his science fiction series to life using an episodic Machinima format.

‘Awakening’ is set in the future approximately 340 years from now.  Earth has been struck by a rogue comet in the year 2048 bringing catastrophes world wide bringing man to the edge of extinction.  Space travelers from the center of the galaxy sent a rescue force to Earth.  These travelers were called Scaliens and helped to rebuild the civilization of earth at the cost of enslaving humanity.  Humanity then rose up to defeat and enslave their captors living that was in peace for the next 340 years.  The sins of the past long forgotten, mankind lives to regret all that has happened.  To read a more comprehensive introduction to the project, please click here.

Saoirse Heart:  I am here today speaking with Doc Grun [aka Douglas W. Green].  In real life, he has worked through and experienced the technical innovations and changes in the automotive industry.  He the author of The Awakening,  and is currently involved  in his life’s dream project; creating a full length movie filmed in VR format, right here in SL.  Doc in your last press release you had completed seven episodes, what has happened to those?

Doc Grun: they were consolidated into 1 movie.  the book is 83,000 words, I had to expand my goals.  we recorded the entire first 7 episodes in voice then would pump the VO into SL to make the avatar lips move while we did the animations.  but we are working on more synchronized movements so back to the drawing board.  It’s only the beginning.  we will also be using mocap for animations that sl cant reproduce.  The project will also spotlight AR VR and how to educate students in the STEAM

How far along are you in completing the entire movie?

Doc Grun: we are working with RL film partners to do it professionally.  filming is on hold while we retool.

Saoirse Heart: How can we follow the series while the movie is in production?

Doc Grun: we are now recording podcasts that will be released 1 a week for 18 weeks, each week reviewing one of the chapters in the book and a playback of my audiobook recording of that chapter. www.awakeningtheseries.com is our main site for now.  The podcast series is titled The Awakening Chronicles.

Saoirse Heart:  Will you have a crowdfunding or other type of fund raising site for people to visit?

Doc Grun: people can contribute on the website if they feel so inclined, every little bit helps.  the more grass roots support corp sponsors see the more they are convinced the project will make them money.  indiegogo campaign is not live yet.  soon.  Did you watch the promo vids?

Saoirse Heart: yes, they are fantastic.

Doc Grun: then you get the scope of the project

Saoirse Heart: huge

Doc Grun: very, We are launching everything at the same time, so as each section is done it is placed on ice and we move to the next.  There will be 3 books in the series.  A prequel next and then a sequel

Saoirse Heart: A project of this size takes a lot of time, how are you coping with the time and keeping your real life going smoothly?

Doc Grun: I am working 13 hours X6 days lately, not much time for me

Saoirse Heart: Wow that is a lot of time, and it is also spent learning the most cutting edge technologies.  Has the changing technology affected the project?

Doc Grun: in fact the book was written so long ago by me I had to go back and update the tech used as what I originally wrote seemed like 1960's sci-fi instead of futuristic lol

Saoirse Heart:  What is your social media presence now?

Doc Grun: my twitter feed is @docgrun.  currently have 530 followers, get about 50 new each day.  helps get the word out.  People can sign up for the newsletter and receive a free copy of the first chapter in pdf format [through the website]

Saoirse Heart:  Do you have a bigger goal beyond this project for your life and your life’s work?
Doc Grun: my goal is to quit my day job and write and produce this, and my partner and I will be starting up a service for people who want to do what we are doing and offer our experience to help them bring their projects to life.  we have made all the mistakes so we know how to help the next person not make them lol

Mostly it is time that is lost.  our team is world wide.  my partner is in California, my film editor is in Colorado, my graphics artist is in the UK.  even setting up a meeting is hard for someone no matter what time we pick.  The reality of Second Life collaborations.

Saoirse Heart: Who are members of your team?

Doc Grun: The team includes Lou CasaBianca [Director/Publisher], Bob Cook [Film Editor] and Andreea Laura Alp [Graphic Artist]

Saoirse Heart:  Thank you for speaking with me today Doc.  I know we all will want to watch the progress of Awakenings and your future projects.  I began reading the book this weekend and as you predicted.....I had a hard time setting it down to write this article.  You may purchase the book in PDF format, order a copy of the audio book and the original music soundtrack all from the website.

TITLE Sisi:  Empress On Her own by Allison Pataki

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For readers of Philippa Gregory, Paula McLain, and Daisy Goodwin comes a sweeping and powerful novel by Allison Pataki. Sisi tells the little-known story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, the Princess Diana of her time, in an enthralling work of historical fiction that is also a gripping page-turner.
Married to Emperor Franz Joseph, Elisabeth—fondly known as Sisi—captures the hearts of her people as their “fairy queen,” but beneath that dazzling persona lives a far more complex figure. In mid-nineteenth-century Vienna, the halls of the Hofburg Palace buzz not only with imperial waltzes and champagne but with temptations, rivals, and cutthroat intrigue. Feeling stifled by strict protocols and a turbulent marriage, Sisi grows restless. A free-spirited wanderer, she finds solace at her estate outside Budapest. There she rides her beloved horses and enjoys visits from the Hungarian statesman Count Andr├íssy, the man with whom she’s unwittingly fallen in love. But tragic news brings Sisi out of her fragile seclusion, forcing her to return to her capital and a world of gossip, envy, and sorrow where a dangerous fate lurks in the shadows.

Through love affairs and loss, dedication and defiance, Sisi struggles against conflicting desires: to keep her family together, or to flee amid the collapse of her suffocating marriage and the gathering tumult of the First World War. In an age of crumbling monarchies, Sisi fights to assert her right to the throne beside her husband, to win the love of her people and the world, and to save an empire. But in the end, can she save herself?

Featuring larger-than-life historic figures such as Bavaria’s “Mad King Ludwig” and the tragic Crown Prince Rudolf, and set against many of Europe’s grandest sites—from Germany’s storied Neuschwanstein Castle to England’s lush shires—Sisi brings to life an extraordinary woman and the romantic, volatile era over which she presided.

BOOK Review: No Money Marketing: All You Need Is Like by Author Angela Yuriko Smith Published August 21, 2011

E-Book Descritption

May 2011 saw the entry of another fiction. The only thing different about it was that this book was a test subject for some marketing experiments. The results were staggering. This was done with minimal to no cost using skills easily obtained from online tutorials. This book is a must have tool for today’s indie authors to promote their work to a massive audience for a minimal cost.

Spotlight on Dandilyon Jinx, Owner & Designer of House of Silverjinx and Author of “End of Mae”, Available now on Amazon.com Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

For years, Second Life has been trying to shake off the unfortunate stigma of being just another virtual world game by people who have never experienced the many paths Second Life can take Avatars. Being immersed in virtual world Media since 2004, I have seen what these platforms can do to help people discover talents they never knew they had, to building and expanding their businesses on a global scale.

The possibilities are endless. Now is the time for those who continue to devalue the continued virtual  support and effort of true professionals, such as Musicians, Fashion Designers, Artists, Architects, Business Owners and even Authors like Dandilyon Jinx, to finally realize it is much more then leisure time spent.

People who want to learn the developing skills necessary to possibly
develop a program as successful as Second Life can find info at http://www.onlineuniversitydegree.org.
In the Internet age, programs such as Second Life will be popular for many
years to come.
