All That Jazz - Camury Reporting...
Jazz,
what does that word evoke in your mind?
Nothing. It evokes something in
your soul. It’s wild, jubilant
music. It made people feel free when it
emerged from the barrooms of New Orleans. It made people feel alive and it got people
up and dancing. And nobody played it
like they played it in New Orleans, a city already used to feeling jubilant,
and expressing its jubilation. A city where you could dance down the middle of
the street, in the middle of the daytime, in the middle of the week, and
instead of people wondering why you weren't at work, they'd be wondering how
they could join you. The glory of New Orleans is that it's still that way
today. Everyone loves a parade. Everything is touched by the joyous anarchy
called New Orleans Jazz.
Jazzis a music genre that
originated amongst African Americans
in New Orleans, United States
in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, and developed from roots in
Blues and Ragtime. Since the 1920s jazz age, jazz has become
recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form
of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common
bonds of African American and European American musical parentage with a
performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes,
call and response vocals, polyruthms and most of all improvisation. Jazz has
roots in West African cultural amd musical expression, and in African American
music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band
music. Although the
foundation of jazz is deeply rooted within the Black experience of the United
States, different cultures have contributed their own experience and styles to
the art form as well. Intellectuals around the world have hailed jazz as
"one of America's original art forms".
Jazz has undergone a multitude of transformations throughout the 20th
century. There is currently room for several Jazz genres. These aspects range
from Dixieland to the experimentalism of Freejazz, through standards and more
ambitious compositions.

This week we are discussing what ‘time’ is in all its shapes and forms. Would a universal time for the whole planet be possible? Should we make time zones larger? Or give them up? What will happen when we colonise other planets with their own days and years? Could there be a standard day and year? Will we adopt a ‘stardate’, maybe so many years ABB (after the big bang) or AI (after the internet)?
How will we deal with personal time and ageing when we travel through space and we all age at different rates? And what happens when we discover how to travel through time?
What is time anyway? Does time move or is it fixed while we move along it? In a universe where time has a different rate depending on where you are or how quickly you are moving, a universe of ‘time crystals’ and the grandfather paradox, what problems do you see with time? Bring your timepiece to GeekSpeak and tell us how you feel about time.

FILLING THE CAULDRON: ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, AND CREATORS COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT ONE OF THEIR OWN

Residents are familiar with the large scale fundraising activities on the Second Life Grid: mustering a world-wide volunteer base on an economic virtual platform to raise thousands of dollars for such causes as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Live and Learn in Kenya's "Feed a Smile," Creations Park’s work to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Hundreds of volunteers donate time, talent, and treasure to make these virtual activities have a real world impact. Every now and again the opportunity comes along for such efforts to be personal. Filling the Cauldron - Saturday April 1st through Sunday, April 9th - is such an opportunity.
Elicio Ember is a brilliant Second Life creator and artist, known for highly imaginative plants and fantasy designs provided through his Cerridwen's Cauldron brand, and for his generous spirit and his involvement in charitable events such as Fantasy Faire. A serious stroke suffered by his father has left Elicio and his sisters with profound medical expenses. The medical situation in Mexico, where Elicio and his family reside, does not provide reasonable medical support for the care and rehabilitation that will be required. Dozens of artists, musicians, and creators who only know Elicio through his creations and generosity have banded together to fill his "Cauldron" - raising money to help Elicio and his family.
Filling the Cauldron is a week-long celebration of Elicio's work in Second Life beginning this Saturday, April 1st. The nine day jubilee will feature live performances, music, over 20 vendor stalls (including Roawenwood, Ozimals, and Fallen Gods), an Art Show with the work of supportive artists as well as Elicio's own works, and both silent and live auctions of unique items contributed to the fundraising effort by their creators. Live events kick off at 9 am slt Saturday with musician Lazarus Doghouse.
The Holly Kai Estate is host to all these features and more. Over half a dozen designers have created fanciful gardens using pieces from the Cerridwen's Cauldron catalogue for the Design a Garden Contest. Visitors can vote for their favorite garden creation, as well as place their votes in the Filling the Cauldron Photo Contest. Cerridwen's Corner will provide an opportunity to purchase a sampling of Elicio's creations, and to visit his main store.
This amazing gathering of talent clearly pays tribute to Ember's contributions to Second Life as both artist and generous spirit, including pieces from his real world artworks available in the silent auction. "So many people have been touched by Elicio's kindness, and found joy in his art," said Inara Pey, organizer, "This is such a tremendous tribute to the many lives he has touched." "There are so many unique one-of-a-kind items to be got at this event," added Saffia Widdershins, also among the organizers, "I hope that people will take advantage of the opportunity to get some of these items and have it benefit such a wonderful person and his family when they really need the help."
Filling the Cauldron officially opens at 12:00am slt on Saturday, April 1st and continues until midnight on Sunday, April 9th.
More information on the event including schedule, and letter from Elicio himself, can be found at: https://cauldronweb.wordpress. com/

The Music of Rebellion– Camury Reporting…
Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Camury, second life, SL, SL dance venues, sl music, SL rock clubs, SL rock music

Innovative and unlike
anything else that had ever happened before in music, Rock emerged in the
early 1950s as a music that for the first time catered almost exclusively to
the youth of the day. It helped erase the racial divide between black and white
America, and also caught on rapidly in Britain, and other parts of Europe, notably
Germany. British rock groups became a major influence on rock music in the U.S.
The major raw creative force of rock music began to wane in the 1970s, so that
mainstream rock had lost its creative drive by 1990. It gave way, however, to
even rawer versions of the genre with various forms of heavy metal, and along
with it punk rock, and grunge (alternative) rock.
Rock music has always been rebellious in spirit. As for 1960s counterculture and folk rockers
such as Bob Dylan, rebellion was an integral part of their acoustic and
electric music. Social causes were dominant in rock music through the 1960s and
into the 1970s, with famous rockers becoming cultural statesmen.
Rock has its roots in 1940s and 1950s and
was heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and
blues and country music.
Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as electric
blues and folk,
and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and
other musical sources.
Musically, rock has centered on the electric
guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar and drums.
Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time
signature using a verse-chorus
form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music,
lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other
themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis.
Most rock
bands include a vocalist, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer, forming a
quartet. Some groups omit one or more of these functions and use a vocalist who
plays an instrument while singing, sometimes forming a trio or duo. Others
still add extra musicians, such as one or two guitarists and keyboardist. More
rarely groups also use saxophonists or trumpeters and even instruments such as
violins or cellos.
Much more
than a musical genre, Rock music created a way of life. It set the benchmark of
behavior for thousands of people, and it influenced their style of dressing,
acting and speaking.

How will the lines and colours of the world map change in the next 100 years? Will Europe still exist? If it falls apart will there be more European nations than before? Will England, Scotland and Wales separate? Will Catalonia leave Spain? Will China fall apart? Will California split from the USA?
Or will all borders disappear in the next century? If that happens will it be because great empires become established? Or because we will all want to join hands and sing together?
In 1977 President Carter sent a message into space that said “We human beings are still divided into nation states, but these states are rapidly becoming a single global civilization.” Is that still true? Was it true then? Was President Carter insane?
100 years is a long time. Come and tell us what you think will happen in that time. And what you hope will happen.
