Interview with Cupid 2021- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

It’s that time of year again when love is in the air and Cupid is hard at work matchmaking across the grid. Every year the torch is passed to a new and improved Valentine’s Day mascot because it seems the previous ones go into retirement or disappear without a trace due to the groupies after his heart. So it was always a mission finding Cupid but this year he seemed to fall into my lap. I came across Cupid 2021 while out and about shopping for a pair of shoes, looked over and saw something stuck in the bushes so I went over to investigate.

Lanai: Hey there. Do you need a hand?

Cupid 2021:Huh? No, I don’t need any help at all, I mean to crash umm land down here I am incognito you know. Looking for people that need my help in the matching of the loves.

 *ruffling around in the bushes*

Lanai: Well... I find it pretty creepy that you are snooping around this shoe outlet. Do you think you will find a lot of singles around here to play matchmaker to?

*helps him out the bushes*

Cupid2021: *coughs* observing, not snooping ok?! Well history shows there are usually a lot of men seeking a match in a place like this. It is a known hang out for women filling their time instead of finding men. And it is my job to assist them along with the process.

Lanai: Yea…. Men with foot fetishes maybe.  Wait… Is that you Orion?  I thought you were on a business trip! That outfit certainty does not look like a suit!

Cupid 2021: Hmmm oh hi Lanai! Fancy meeting you here. And hey, what you might not call a conventional suit, they do say this is the suit for the job. Come on you love the wings don’t you? So, I was tasked this year to help a lot of people find love and find their soulmate or at least one for a good long weekend.

Lanai: The wings work with that outfit just not with a halo... Your reputation in SL is’t that great, especially in the music scene.  Anyways... I can respect that you want to do “charity work” in Second Life, but taking on being Cupid this year to stalk women at shoe stores? What exactly do you intend to do with those magic arrows?

Cupid 2021: First of all, as for my reputation, well you know how I feel about pixels um I mean people and what they think of me or us or our business, so it matters not to me. And again for the record, I am not stalking. This is a job I am taking very seriously. These arrows help people find their true love. It reveals it to them. Or…. It makes them utterly stupid and fall for the first person that comes along. Either way people get lucky for a bit. And not only that! How cool is it that I get to shoot people with arrows and not get arrested?!!?

Lanai: Fine come with me as I shop for some shoes.  Your job is literally being a pain in the ass.. So let's get down to the reason for the season and the definition of love from your point of view?

Cupid 2021: Well yes, I mainly shoot in the ass, there is most of the meat, especially with those curvy anatomically incorrect avies aka “KFCs”. But love to me, well combine, happiness, sadness, frustration, joy, sweet, dread and then add in a lot of confusion and there you have love.

Lanai: Interesting…. Well SL Statistics show 62% of SL couples don't make it from one Valentine’s Day to the next, 25% have side pieces that seem to balance things out, 12% actually make it past 1 year and the remaining 1%... take it to Real life and live their happily ever after. Now that you are crowned the expert of Love; Mr. Cupid….With these statistics all laid out what advice can you give couples dabbling in that thing called love? What makes it work and what doesn’t?

Cupid 2021: Well first off, Ladies, seriously! Spending all your time at some shoe stores isn’t going to get you the man of your dreams unless that is he sells shoes for a living. My advice for all the other people out there. Communicate and trust the one you want to be with, don’t look for the short haul, look for the long term. I know in my own experience patience and perseverance won and now I am the winner. You can find it too, just stop over thinking everything and let my arrows do their work.

Lanai: She must be a lucky lady or miserable to actually have Cupid as her man. Any advice for single men out there having a hard time with love?

Cupid 2021: Oh she gets lucky, umm I mean is lucky I will say that, damn is she lucky. As for advice for men, I don’t think here is enough time for all that, but I will give the quick cliff notes. Men… LEARN what mesh is, you are in SL looking for love, not looking for a hookup behind the Dollar Tree?!!? Moving forward just stop acting broke or being a jackass. For the men who want their cake and a muffin on the side, sometimes you have a great woman right there in front of you but you still want to poke their “arrows” in others. STOP IT. Just STOP IT. Appreciate what you have and if you don’t have one, TRY harder, don’t expect one to fall from the sky. I am shooting them from the ground not while they are flying overhead. Stop looking up for them and look in some hearts.

Lanai: I guess that's good advice.. So for those who are already in a relationship, trouple, swinging or whatever, What kind of ways can they celebrate Valentine’s day?

Cupid 2021:Well that is a good question, and has a lot of different answers for many. Some say staying at home watching some Netflix together is great. Me I rather just blow my wad on some flowers, chocolates,  great fine wine and dining, maybe some dancing then home for some “showing her how I love her” if you know what I mean?! But the main thing no matter what you do is to show your significant other that you love them and they mean the world to you. And well, if you aren’t that kind of romantic person you can just always take her shoe shopping!

Lanai: That’s good advice Cupid! You actually do have a sweet side.  BTW what do you think of my shoes?

Cupid 2021: Well thank you! But let’s keep that between us for now ok? And regarding your shoes, you do have good taste but I think you can do a little better. Stop buying bargain bin shoes.

Lanai: o.O

And there you have it shootin’ straight from Cupid. Cheers xoxo :)

Happy Valentine’s Day SLE fans!

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 13th February at noon SLT: Where are we going?

Where are the moon bases that were so confidently predicted in 1969?  Where is the socialist utopia?  Every time humanity has plans for the future something else happens.  What makes our history jump about like a butterfly?  Is it because we depend on ‘black swan’ events that cannot be predicted?

How can we control our future?  Can we invent something really new or do we have to build on earlier inventions? Could we have thought of flight without seeing birds?  Do we lack imagination?

What do you see coming?  Let’s discuss why we are so certain about our future and why it will probably surprise us.  Bring your time machine.

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

The Origins of Valentine's day wasn't always so romantic...- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Valentine’s Day is a holiday dating as far back as the 5th century A.D. originating from Paganism and the Lupercalia Festival. This event was held on February 15th each year in the city of Rome. It was a sexually charged event with random hookups, violent and bloody celebration which included animal sacrifices to ward off evil spirits and promote fertility.

With the rise of Christianity, the Lupercalia Festival was outlawed and deemed “un- Christian”. It is said that Roman priests in an attempt to replace the pagan festival with a less aggressive form of romance would sacrifice dogs and goats and run upon and slap women on the streets with the blood drench hides as a blessing of fertility. These blood slapped women would then put their names in an urn to be selected and paired with a man for a year which often resulted in marriage.  It appears both parties weren’t being too romantic about matchmaking but back then they apparently had no shame.

Then comes Saint Valentine. He was a patron saint shrouded in mystery. According to some historians, Roman Emperor Claudius II  felt that young male soldiers were better at war than those with wives and children so he outlawed marriage for young men.

Well, Valentine wasn’t having it and thought it wasn’t right,  so he continued to perform marriages of young peeps on the down-low.  He ended up getting caught, sentenced to death, and beheaded. Not before allegedly falling in love with a young girl, rumor has it she was the jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his imprisonment. According to that legend, he was the first to send a love letter signed “From your Valentine''.

Other sources suggest there was another man by the name of Valentine who was a bishop but it turns out Claudius had a problem with that guy too and off with his head.  Claudius should go down in history for being the first c*ckblocker but I bet you won't find anything about that online.

Anyway, at the end of the 5th Century, it is said Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be St. Valentine’s Day. It is believed that England and France observed the day because it was the beginning of birds mating season and should be a day for romance. Awww now that makes a little more sense. Who really knows the truth behind all the legends and allegations since there are all kinds of versions of how Valentine’s Day got its name or where it originated from.

Today, couples celebrate it with dates, flowers, and chocolates which usually lead to a little bump and grind. Others forget and run to their local gas station for a fist full of wilted flowers and a bag of M&Ms before they get home. I guess it's the thought that counts...

However, you choose to observe the day, celebrate it with Love. Don’t go slappin' anybody with a bloody goat or anything like that.

Happy Valentine’s Day

XOXO

-Lanai

Super Bowl Party At Rockin' Robin: Stacey Cardalines Reporting

I know several dozen people in real life who view the Super Bowl as more important than Easter or Christmas, and to be fair to their viewpoint, you can't turn on the TV and see Jesus rupture some guy's spleen. That's not the case with the NFL. Your belief system should be built on concrete whenever possible, and my God is getting three and a half points on Sunday.

Ideally, you aren't on SL for the Super Bowl. It's one of America's great party days, and you want to spend it with friends, eating pizza, ogling the cheerleaders, drinking copious amounts of beer, laughing at the commercials, gawking at the pretty girl singing the National Anthem, wagering the mortgage on the final score with payment due to some menacing Sicilian fellow... and maybe even watching the game. It's pure Americana, and even people who don't like football will get a kick out of something on the list that I just, Uhm, listed. You want to be Out on the Super Bowl... out among Those People.

But these are the 2020s, babe, and isolation is the new social. That works for some people, as it is hard for a Purist to focus on the game with the necessary Jihad-like intensity if some joker is asking him/her to pass the chicken wings or wondering if the Bud Knight will be on soon. If your lawyer is clever, you can kill a guy for that in a football-friendly state such as Alabama and skate like Tonya Harding.

An avatar has several distinct advantages over an actual human when it comes to watching the game. A human can't say "BRB" if another human asks them a question. You can try, but it goes over poorly. I tried it at the last Super Bowl party that I was invited to... about 12 years ago, I think. The avatar is not concerned with such milquetoast niceties. When the game gets close, sequestration has benefits. The avatar doesn't have to set out 40 plates of nachos. The avatar doesn't have to clean up, mix drinks, break up fights, listen to their wife, or any of those other things that get in the way of watching the game.

However, the human being is a social animal. It's fun to watch the game in the company of others, even if they are just little cartoons like on SL. This is not just true for trendy reasons. You like to be able to turn to a fellow fan and say "What a catch!" or "I can't believe he missed that field goal" or "Wow, that guy got hit so hard, he may not know his own middle name anymore." You can't do that alone, even if you have a really empathic cat. As daunting as the real world can be, you need other people at times.

This leads us to today's featured sim, Rockin' Robin. Rockin' Robin (Tweet, Tweet Tweet) is a nightclub which is hosting a day-long Super Bowl party on Sunday. They've turned the sim into a football stadium, and- minus the 22 guys needed to have a football game- have focused on making the sim into a sort of all-day Halftime Show. They have a zillion acts and a series of DJs going on from 2 AM SLT until the last one hits the stage at 11 PM. Purelife Magnifico has done wonders with the stadium, and Ev Canadi proved to be a fine Minister of Information. They have seasonal and event-themed activities all year, including very imminent Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day parties..

If life puts you on SL for the Super Bowl, you can do a lot worse than Rockin' Robin. I hope to see you there.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? - LEARN ABOUT A PAGAN COMMUNITY OFFERING EDUCATION AND FRIENDSHIP RIGHT HERE IN SL - ROXY MYSTIC REPORTING

Everybody knows about witches, they've all been introduced to us from a very young age. Actually, now that I think about it, my first introduction to a witch of sorts was from the fairytale story of Hansel and Gretel who snatches up children to eat! Such a lovely story to read to a child before bedtime. Thankfully the Wizard of Oz came along and I learned that there are good witches and bad ones too. They've been in books and appeared on both the big screen, the small screen, and the in-between.  Love them or hate them, they are here to stay.

I was very excited to meet with Rain Hammer who is the owner of The Crescent Moon Cafe, a Pagan community that is open to the public.  My first impression of her establishment was positive and welcoming. My eyes curiously flicked over to read the notice board which displayed their up-coming events: Mutual Learning, Meditation Spring, Gods & Goddesses. I was definitely intrigued and eager to learn more about The Crescent Moon Cafe.

Roxy Mystic: First I would like to say thank you for taking the time to sit down with me Rain, it's greatly appreciated. Let me begin with a clarification for our SL Enquirer readers, The Crescent Moon Cafe is not about roleplay it's a genuine community that provides educational information on paganism and friendship. Can you elaborate a bit more about what you do here and how was this community founded?

Rain Hammer: Yes Roxy I would be happy to! I was part of a group called Broom and Brew and unfortunately, due to RL circumstances, the owner Akia had to leave SL. I did not want to see it go so I decided to open the Crescent Moon Cafe late last year. We currently have 3 knowledgeable people on staff that provide groups (classes) on various topics.

Roxy Mystic:  What kind of herbs would be used in a pagan practice and is this topic something that would be taught at The Crescent Moon Cafe? Also with Valentine's Day just around the corner, I just have to ask if there is such a thing as Potion #9?

Rain Hammer:  Hahaha! Yes Roxy there is such thing as a love potion, however, the witches I know would never do a spell or potion that would make someone love someone else, that is up to the universe.  Besides what if your dream girl/guy turned out to be a hot mess, we are happy however to do a spell to make you more attractive and desirable.  The herbs used in pagan practice would be just about any herb you can get your hands on.  Each herb has uses for example Lavender will make you relax, while peppermint and rosemary will give energy.

Roxy Mystic: Unfortunately there are still lots of misconceptions when it comes to witches. Even though they say witchcraft is on the rise there are some that are still not comfortable coming out of the "broom closet". With that in mind, how do you address those visiting The Crescent Moon Cafe with such concerns? Also please share with our readers as to how being a witch can be helpful in our daily life?

Rain Hammer:  I would love to, if someone is not comfortable they are never expected to participate, if someone has concerns we will do our best to address them, no one is ever expected to always agree but I do ask that we respect one another. I am a witch in RL as well as SL, I find it helps, I know how to guard or protect myself. I have gemstones and a pendulum in my purse and if I run into a situation that I am not sure what to do, I will do a spell, meditate, or use one of my tarot decks.  So as I like to say I witch my way through it.

Roxy Mystic:  Let's talk about witch fashion! I am sure you know that the most popular Halloween costume for adults is to be dressed as a witch. There appears to be no particular dress code when it comes to witch attire. Does The Crescent Moon Cafe have a preferred attire or do people just come as they are?

Rain Hammer:  Smiles, well Roxy that depends on you, we have no dress code, whatever makes you feel good. There are a few people who choose to come naked.

Roxy Mystic:  Pagans have a number of rituals and celebrations and I have noticed you have a red tent/ritual area. Can you provide an example of a ritual that would be performed here?

Rain Hammer: That area is used if we have a full moon ritual or one of the 8 seasonal pagan festivals. The red tent is for women or those who identify as a woman. There we talk about subjects that women would deal with in general, for example we have had discussion on sex magic, the inner warrior and our ancestor witches, just to mention a few.

Roxy Mystic: I would like to talk to you about pagan jewelry; we usually imagine pentacle amulets and triple-Moon rings but it can be much more.  It's not just a decoration in many cases and some do hold special energies. Can you give some examples of how this kind of jewelry can help us?

Rain Hammer:  Oh definitely, I often wear in RL Moonstones or rose quartz.  The jewelry a witch may wear is for protection, clarity, or luck.

Roxy Mystic: My last question for you today Rain is a fun one! With your fiery red hair you could easily be cast as Melisandre the red witch in the Game of Thrones but if you could be any of the fantasy witches who would you pick and why?

Rain Hammer: I would say one of the sisters in the TV show Charmed.  If they ran into an obstacle, they did not let that stop them. They always found a spell or potion to deal with it. Like I said earlier, they witch their way through it.

I really enjoyed spending some time with Rain, she is very friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable in her craft. For anybody wishing to learn more about paganism, I would highly recommend visiting this place. There is a growing fascination in this field and it is crucial that you are well informed before you venture into paganism. The friendly folks at The Crescent Moon Cafe can certainly assist you with questions and some guidance.

GeekSpeak – Robots! Where will they go, what will they do? Join the discussion Feb 6th at 12pm SLT

What is the strangest use for a robot that you can think of?  Will there be one in your kitchen, in your toilet, in your butt?

Will there be robot doctors, dentists, judges, juries?  Will there be zillions of microbots running the world?  Will they replace bees or trees or other wild organisms? What will a future with 10 robots (or 1000 or 1,000,000) to every human be like?  Will you ever marry a robot or put one in your will?

Are we in danger from robots?  Will Asimov’s 3 laws protect us?

Come and discuss our future electronic friends or foes.  Bring your friends, robotic or otherwise.

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

Does Your Business Really Need an In-House IT Department?

The management of an IT infrastructure to ensure that it is performing at its best is critical to the success of any modern business. Therefore, businesses need to hire the right staff and have the right systems in place. However, as long as IT has existed, there has been a raging debate about whether businesses need an in-house IT department or whether they need to outsource these services. In this article, we will look at when a business needs an in-house IT department and whether outsourcing is a viable solution.

In-House IT Department

One of the biggest reasons why you should have an in-house IT department is that the specialists you hire will have an intimate understanding of your systems. Whereas you would have to explain to an IT consultant how your infrastructure is configured before they start troubleshooting, an IT specialist who is already available can start right away.

Second, members of your IT team are fully aware of your business goals and objectives. They are better able to help your business achieve those goals and objectives because everything they do will be to help your business achieve them.

Lastly, you can pick members of your IT team who best fit your business culture which you cannot do when you outsource your IT services.

What About Outsourcing?

Outsourcing your IT services is usually a lot cheaper than having an in-house IT department. You do not have to hire all the people you need to keep your systems running and instead need to pay a fixed cost for the length of your contract.

Additionally, many firms offering IT support and consulting offer services you may be paying for under one umbrella. For example, your business may be paying separately for email filtering, network monitoring, antivirus software, and backups. IT firms, especially those that offer managed IT services, do all this and more, thereby helping you save even more money.

Lastly, you get access to a wider range of knowledge and experience. IT support firms hire different specialists with different specializations. You get access to this pool of knowledge when you hire the IT firm, but it would be difficult and expensive to hire different people with these specializations for your in-house IT department.

Does Your Business Need an In-House IT Department?

It depends. You might need an in-house IT department if you need tight control over your IT infrastructure as well as people who intimately understand your infrastructure. If you have multiple, specific IT projects and infrastructure running, you might also need an in-house IT department as that is the cheaper solution for this type of set-up.

However, if you are a smaller business that does not have the budget to maintain your IT infrastructure, you may need to outsource your IT services. Additionally, businesses that need 24/7 monitoring and someone always available to thwart any threats that come up might be better served by outsourced IT services.

There are circumstances where an in-house IT department is required and where it would be better to outsource these services. It all depends on your business and its specific needs.

Feb 7th - Erika Ordinary & Mimi Carpenter LIVE at Terry's Sunday Showcase

Join us on Sunday, February 7th beginning at 2pm SLT for Terry's Sunday Showcase, sponsored by the SL Enquirer! This week's featured artist is the lovely Erika Ordinary, an Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter who performs her own original music, as well as a genre-spanning collection of cover songs. She accompanies herself on guitar, ukulele, and a live looping pedal.
Performing her debut at Terry's this week, Erika has a wonderfully expressive voice that can be powerful but also is pleasantly delicate and understated. She brings life to the songs she selects and a window to her soul in songs of her own.
Also performing this week at 3pm SLT, Terry's is proud to welcome Mimi Carpenter!! Known for her distinctively gentle, French lilt, Mimi Carpenter's talent as a self-taught musician has graced the Second Life music scene for a decade. As her presence and talent grew, so too did her repertoire of covers and originals.

Mimi’s extensive song list doesn't just highlight the eclectic tastes and influences upon her development as an artist, which includes rock, indie, and pop. The inclusion of English, French, and German language songs also reflect her travels and experiences living throughout Europe and abroad.
Come support live music with friends, laughter, and a whole lot of fun...ONLY at Terry's Place!!!
