Crowning glory - Lacy Muircastle reporting...

Glorious locks, shining tresses, Rapunzel, Goldilocks… Throughout history, and in fairy tales and legends, a woman’s hair has been seen as a manifestation of her femininity and desirability. (Sorry guys.)
Many of us have a love hate relationship with our hair. Our hairstyle is one of the most noticeable aspects of our look. It can show off our personalities and highlight our face and in Second Life we can change it on a whim.

In RL our hair obsession is a multi-billion dollar industry, including hair dyes, styling products, wigs, celebrity hairdressers and hairstyle magazines. The endless media ‘reports’ on celebrities ‘new do’s” fuel the idea of forever changing your ‘look’.  Luckily in SL it’s easy peasy to make a change and we are spoiled for choice.  We can even be a redhead one day and a blonde the next with no worries that our hair will fall out due to constant colour changes.

So let’s talk about colour … Many stereotypes are associated with our natural hair colour: blondes are dumb, redheads have fiery tempers and brunettes are attractive. While we believe these to be assumptions, it’s no secret that people often create a first impression about one based on their hair colour. Research has now proven that many of these stereotypes can sometimes have very real effects.

Scientifically, hair Colour is formed by a substance called melanin produced at the root of the hair bulb by groups of specialised cells called melanocytes. Melanin itself consists of two types: the ratio of these two types creates the hair colour in each individual.

Let’s look at colour types and personality traits generally associated with them.

Red Hair…

Contrary to the belief that red hair colour was given to us by Neanderthals; science has shown that it’s a result of mutation of a gene in chromosome 16. Red hair has even been represented in various artworks including that of Michelangelo.  It’s said that in Europe red hair is valued and respected. Statistics say that nearly 10% people in Scotland and England have red hair. Around the world red heads are bullied or teased with words like “ginger” which can be psychologically damaging for the recipient.

Personality traits associated with red hair:

Mysterious, romantic, passionate, alluring and fiery.  Other traits attributed to redheads are - explosive, bad tempered, opinionated, seductive or sexually promiscuous.

Blonde hair…

Naturally occurring blonde hair very rare.  It occurs naturally in northern Europe (Scandinavia) and America. Unusually  it’s also been seen in nearly 5 to 10% of the indigenous population of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific where the inhabitants predominantly have very dark skin. Until recently it was assumed that blonde hair was a result of gene flow, a trait passed on by ancient traders and travellers who visited different countries, centuries ago. Today it’s been established that a single gene is responsible for it.  The people of the Solomon Islands attribute their blonde hair colour to a diet rich in fish, and sun exposure.
Personality traits associated with blonde hair:

Females with blonde hair are generally thought of as high maintenance.  A survey has shown that the divorce rate is also higher in this category. Blonde hair is perceived to be feminine, youthful, naive and obedient and more fun.  Apparently gentlemen do tend to prefer blondes.

Brunette…

Predominantly seen in Asia, South America and Africa, this hair colour is considered exotic in Europe just like blondes and redheads are in the rest of the world. A study conducted on a woman who visited a nightclub on three different occasions, changing her hair colour from red, to blonde and then brunette. The result was that most men said that they found her most appealing, attractive, approachable, dependable and “seemingly better at relationships” as a brunette.

Personality traits associated with brunette hair colour:

The majority of Nobel Prize winners are brunettes. They are thought of as very hard working people. They are supposedly more serious and tend to form long term relationships.

Black hair…

Just as men prefer blondes, women are known to prefer men with dark hair. Deep, introspective and meditative, this personality type is serious and melancholic.

Personality traits associated with black hair colour:

Black haired people are thought to be interested in religion, poetry and spirituality. They are serious and self-centred but also tend to suffer from self-doubt. They make great psychologists, therapists etc.
Allegedly in RL, if you colour your hair with a shade other than your natural hair colour, it will more than likely influence your behaviour and after a while you will even adopt the stereotypes associated with said colour.

My avatar has always been brunette, and I’m brunette in RL. I’ve always felt that I don’t have the right attitude to be blonde.  What are your opinions on hair colour and what it says about you and your avatar?

Terms of endearment - Lacy Muircastle reporting...

When someone calls you ‘hon’ do your toes curl? Terms of endearment, do you love them or do you hate them?

When is it appropriate to use terms of endearment?  Is it ever appropriate to use terms of endearment? Or is it just a storm in a teacup and there are far more serious issues in the world to get one’s knickers in a knot about? For the hell of it I’ve taken a look at this prickly little subject.

There’s a lot of power in a name and each one throws up different connotations so it’s important to know which ones will flatter a partner or the person you’re directing at and which are definitely not going to have the right effect.

One in ten husbands and boyfriends admitted they let their partner call them a soppy nickname they would dread their friends ever finding out.

There’s a lot to be read from a name, and sometimes using too strongly clichéd or overly-soppy pet names for someone we like will just be seen as insincere.

It’s become one of the most common terms of endearment used by couples, but 'babe' has been voted the most hated pet name for women.  The term, made popular by Sonny and Cher's Sixties hit I Got You Babe, come out on top in a new study. (Siteopia.com)

‘Sweetcheeks’, ‘snookums’ and ‘muffin’ were also a definite no no, but terms such as ‘gorgeous’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘lovely’ were considered acceptable.

Nicknames like ‘baby girl’ and ‘baby doll’ are also unpopular, along with ‘pudding’ and ‘pumpkin and the research also revealed that only one in five Britons calls their partner by their full name the majority of the time, with the same number admitting to using a private nickname when no-one else is around.

Many of the men who took part in the study also confessed to referring to their partner with terms they would only use while she was out of earshot.  The Mrs’ or ‘the wife’ were still used by some men, while one in six quietly referred to their partner as ‘the boss’.

‘Whether using the more common terms like “babe” or “darling” or some of the more modern terms, the research shows the ones we choose for our partner can have very differing impacts.

What’s more it’s all very well using terms of endearment with your nearest and dearest, but what about when you’ve just met someone or you’re in a work environment?  Is it not condescending and disrespectful to call a person “hon” “sweetie” etc.  Or is it okay as long as the tone is appropriate?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion let us know what yours is.

A Review of Nabrej Aabye's latest exhibition "Itineraries" - Triuzla reporting.

Sometimes while wandering through virtual art galleries it can bring about unexpected and priceless experiences. A visit to Crossroads Gallery can be one of such bargains for travelers seeking new discoveries in SL.
The paintings presented at the “Itineraries” exhibition at Crossroads Gallery are intriguing and thought provoking. Don’t resist the temptation to explore the whole building.

Nabrej AAbye is a mysterious creator living in Tunisia. Since 2007, he as been involved with art and builder in Second Life. You can visit his art studio where you can buy even more beautiful pieces of art, which are not included in the current exhibit. The artist shares his inspiration by incorporating real life scenes as subjects in transition to second life in its diverse form. Truly, the blend of two realities causes controversial and disturbing feelings of dynamic and emotions, hidden deep in ones’ sub consciousness.

The use of bright colors influences the whole specter of thoughts and provokes tough inner response. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that the pictures can be stared for a long time, delving into the virtual dialog with the creator.

What did he mean by adding this or that layer? Did he wish us to meditate on his artworks or take immediate action? Questions emerge all the time.

I can’t say that the theme of revolutionary changes is the guiding idea of  Nabrej’s works. In his native country he has experienced these dramatic events, turbulence and rigorous vibes which can be perceived through the contemplation on his works.
True features of talent is his ability to transform hard experiences into optimistic, mature sated works, setting peace and wisdom in the viewer’s soul.

“La Marche” can make one stand motionless. The artwork contains numerous female dark silhouettes, hurrying on somewhere (on execution, as artist explained in a private talk). However there’s one bright white young representative of this mass, which totally differs and can become the agent of changes.
It is perceived as a bright hope depicted in a playful form. The pureness and open-warmheartedness permeates the air around all pieces of Nabrej’s art.
For example, “Avatars” is a piece that stimulates imagination with its intriguing layering effect. Watching this picture for a long time you can imagine an abstract idea.
Despite this fact one can feel a strong connection with their own adventures in SL.
On the one hand, art should actually cause such an effect. On the other hand, Kerouak’s quote on the floor sets the whole mood of the perception and makes it clear what the creator was trying to tell us.
