AVIE POLL: Is Second Life an extension of real life or just a game?- The SL Enquirer

Second Life has to be one of the most incredible virtual world platforms on the internet as well as an amazing social experiment. For over a decade and a half avatars from all over the world collectively created the environment and  community. Some would argue that it is best to keep Second Life separate from real life because it is just a game while others have a more emotional or professional connection to SL. They take it more seriously and would argue it is an extension of real life. Because Second life is a unique community of professionals mixed with role players and gamers, there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends what you do in Second Life. The SL Enquirer explored the grid to ask avies from all walks of Second Life, “Is this an extension of RL or just a game?”.

SLE: Is Second Life an extension of real life or just a game?

Sól: Second Life is a thriving community and has moved into being a vital part of my life since the onset of the Covid pandemic. Here we interact with one another as pixelated avatars, but there is a real person driving the interactions. People come to Second Life, and cosplay, become fashion designers, and in some cases rockstars. For people unable to have families, they can come to SL and simulate that experience. For transgender people, there is a freedom to live the life they choose here as well. With so much appeal to so many people from different walks of life I could never say that SL is just a game. For me, SL is where my best friends are. This is a space I can be myself, where I can work on myself, where I give myself space to grow.”

Nuka: “When I first came to SL it was a foreign world, and while it took some time to master the basics, the vehicle it provided to enhance my life was amazing. After enjoying the club scene and many different social aspects of the online community, I delved into several different roleplay settings, indulging in the creative outlet of writing which is a long time passion of mine. More recently I have re-entered the social aspect of Second Life and enjoy the talents of a multitude of musicians across the globe. Across the whole of my experience in Second Life, all along the way I have made friends that I have cherished, and memories that are heartwarming with people I would never have otherwise met. Regardless of the use to which I put it, it's definitely an extension of real life with a very real and tangible connection with some pretty terrific people.” <3

Stacey: “Most things in life can be answered by examining the Batman mythos. People who hang around Batman, like the butler or the kid, would point out that Batman is 100% dedicated to crime fighting. His persona of Bruce Wayne, billionaire playboy, is the real mask. He cares nothing for that rich guy's life, which is just a tool that helps him be Batman. A psychologist might say that, no matter how much time he devotes to being Batman, the superhero act is just a tool which Bruce Wayne uses to solve his personal torment. You can turn that logic onto our Avie Poll. I'd go with the shrink's answer. No matter how much time you spend playing SL, even if you seal yourself in a sensory deprivation chamber and do nothing but play SL and eat Chinese delivery food until your heart fails, it is still just you making an animated version of your idealized self and doing things you can not do in RL. SL is a game that real people play. There can be real life results of SL activity- you might make enough Lindens to get rich RL, or you may meet your future husband on here, or you may take a girl avatar on the D Train to Sexytown and never know she was 14 until the detectives show up disguised as Chinese food delivery guys and kick in the door to your sensory deprivation chamber- in case you think the divide between SL and RL is impermeable. However, even if your avatar just walks around and looks at things, the same connection exists. I'd ask the reader to keep in mind that I would give the same answer to this question for any game, be it SL or Candyland or Pac-Man. Everything is real life.”

Mrs.Blue:It depends on the person really but as for me it's an extension of rl to me when you refer sl as a game then you’re basically saying nothing matters meaning no feelings no connection no emotions like playing a video game example pacman, space invaders those are games. people that do play sl as a game its basically means nothing to them. I've been on sl for 8 yrs now going on 9. I've only been in 2 relationships and I made lots of close friends here . When there is a connection between the avis its the same as in rl how you make connections in rl. There are feelings and emotions, a special connection and bond. when people say it's just a game or they seperate sl from rl I will call their bluff. It is hard and impossible to separate both. When emotions and feelings get involved. I'm not saying it's safe to go meet someone you met on sl because it's not safe unless you do your research on someone and get background information. But there is a bond on sl with avis as in rl. I cried when my friends passed away. I worry when I don't hear from them. If my relationship doesn't work out I go through the same emotions I do in rl.. sl has also helped a lot of people who can't do rl stuff no more so it becomes a part of them. example you use to build houses in rl but you've gotten older or health reasons got in the way so u come on sl to continue to do what you love. or you worked in a retail store but can't do it no more because of health issues you come on sl to start your own business. So sl can be a part of your rl in many ways . sl has also been rl to those who are disabled in rl it gives them away to do things that they can't do in rl. Our avis represents us. Well at least in my case it does bring the rl me to sl i voice i control my avi as I control myself in rl. So is sl just a game to me that will be big NOOO. Is sl an extension of my rl? YES IT'S APART OF IT.``

Gemma: “My Best Friend in RL introduced Second Life Online games with me. She encouraged me  to play SL.  At first , I was hesitant because I never played any online games in my entire life. Since last year, 2020 is not a good year for all of us , I decided to try  it anyway, and now ,It's been six months and counting :) that I am playing Second Life. Second life games offer a lot to the players, from your avatar, places that you are visiting and a lot more. But,  what excites me most are meeting new people all over the world. At first, I thought Second Life is just really a  game to play. Something that can occupy you if you are not busy in RL. But as I go along, I find Second life as an extension of my real life.  Why ? Simply because , I spend Time, Efforts and Emotions in playing Second Life. Efforts, in making my Avi as beautiful as I want it to be. I believed that my Avi  is an extension of myself, from the Hair, dresses, shoes , and jewelry that I choose to wear while playing. Same in RL, you always find time to do things that will make you happy like Clubbing, Dancing, Beaches , meeting friends and  a lot more  and those things are also offered in Second lIfe. When it comes to emotions, I put half of my  RL heart in playing Second Life.  When you meet new people or gain new  friends in SL , you are investing feelings already towards them.  Like in RL, you can also feel different emotions in playing SL , you can be Happy or Sad , You can laugh and cry, You can be Good or Not, or You can feel Hurt or Betrayed,  by the people you choose to be with in this Game. So at the end of the Day, from the Time You Log in and TIme you Log out in Second Life , what is Important is your HEART.”

Jessie:SL is a game, BUT it is not "JUST" a game. People seldom use the word "play" for being in SL. You could say it is social networking and therefore can be an extension of real life. However in SL you are free to create any avi - to be anyone, to do anything, even to be any species. It means different things to different people. Many people use SL as an extension of RL. And many use SL to experiment with roles that they would never try in real life. Some are very creative. SL is very immersive and the emotions are real. The friendships are real. And yes, people really do fall in love. Often there will be 30,000 people 'inWorld'. The content is all created by the users. In SL people cooperate to build SIMs and run events, rather than shooting each other!! For me it is all about friends and live music. We go to venues and chat while we watch the most amazing musicians from around the globe. There is a lot of 'audience participation' too!! I also like exploring the many wonderful SIMs. So yes, SL is a game but much more. And it can be an extension of real life. So, it is both.”

GreenEyedroyalty:To me, SL is neither a game or an extension of my real life.  It is a Matrix-like alternate universe where one can find a new identity or jump into an experience they would never dream of trying in real life.  The lives, movements, creations may be synthetic but the feelings, friendships and meanings are real.  In other words, if your heart dies in SL, it dies in RL as well.”

Ninja: Personally, I'm a firm believer that SL is almost always an extension of real life...unless you're a bot or are participating in RP, there are real life people behind every avatar, each of whom deserve the same respect and treatment as you would give them in your normal life.  That being said, I do recognize that some people need to understand the important differences between SL and real life, such as the necessity of eating, sleeping, working, showering, etc.....as well as the importance of maintaining some level of anonymity with a person you just met in a virtual environment.

Karen“I pay my monthly premium and am entitled to do what I want in SL. You are violating my right to be an avatar.   I’m calling the cops!”

Is Second Life just a game or an extension of your real life? The consensus is SL is more than just a game. However, there are no right or wrong answers to this question. It all depends on the individual purpose for immersing in this virtual world. Join the poll and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Snowboarding At Toggenburg Mountain

Some people, your author included love winter and refuse to let go of it. The dawn of April does little to slow ol' Stacey Cardalines down. I like summer too, don't get me wrong, but I love snow and could happily have it year-round if we got enough beach days when I wasn't working. Other people feel this way, even if they are in the minority. I know this because there are still numerous winter themed sims operating 12 months a year.

As winter turns to spring in our Massachusetts office, we took to the virtual world to get our Powder fix on.

Toggenburg Mountain exists in the Toggenburg sim. Toggenburg appears to be the town name, as well. I'm not sure if the town is named for the mountain or if the mountain is named for the town, and I'm banking enough on you not caring either that I'm doing zero research on this. "It looks like Toboggan" is a better answer to "I wonder why they named the town that?" than anything that has a chance of being, like, actual.

It's winter every day in Toggenburg. Snow covers everything. It also looks very cold. The residents of Toggenburg save thousands of dollars a decade by not requiring air conditioning. They are situated at the base of a high and steep mountain. While I am not well versed in this field of study, I would guess that bookends of three years extend either way from this current date to Toggenburg's last/next Really Big Avalanche.

The sim is made by Governor Linden, who may be a real Linden or may not, I have no idea. It's a good-sized sim, capable of supporting a ten-minute trolley tour ride. They put a lot of effort into it. The Govna' did not succumb to the temptation of overloading the sim, which is appreciated by reporters who tour sims for a living. If you like winter, you'll be as happy as a polar bear walking around Toggenburg. It looks very much like the town that the Meister Burger ruled in that Santa animated special.

I eventually found a hill and a chairlift, and up we went to the part where you can ski. I took the liberty of putting the landmark (see bottom of the article) there. It gives you the opportunity to arrive- skiing- into the village at 70 mph.

They actually offered a choice between skiing or snowboarding. This is appreciated, as skiing is considered sort of an elite sport, played by elitists. The Winter Olympics are, to many, just a chance to watch some snobby European get crippled. Snowboarding is more like Mountain Surfing, it screams Americana, and I chose the snowboard. If they had a sled, I would have chosen that.

Snowboarding is easy and fun. You just rez the thing, stand on it, and off you go. While it takes a sec to figure out how to direct it, you master it quickly enough. I'm a bit of a clutz, and I went off course quickly, which resulted in me taking a 700-foot free fall. I was actually a bit disappointed that I didn't crash worse trying that, to be frank. I take great joy out of punishing my avatar and love her Looney Tunes-like ability to absorb and come back from the punishment that would cripple a real human.

That disappointment was erased by the ability to snowboard into the village and try to tour it. I crashed into a few houses, but it's all good. That's why Lanai pays me the big bucks.

It's actually a pretty good way to tour the town. Go through full speed (for reasons unrelated to physics, you never really lose much momentum once the snowboard is moving along level surfaces) and see what the town has to offer. After that, take the trolley tour, and see the town at non-psychopath speeds.

I'd even recommend walking through it. This may take you some time, as it covers many acres, but it allows you to go into a building without being on a snowboard and going 65 mph. The homeowners tend to appreciate that.

AVIE POLL: DATING IN SL HORROR STORIES- The SL Enquirer

Second Life is full of wild adventures, experiences and even surprises! From creating your own perfect avatar image and starring in your own SL story. There is always a good story to tell. Many avatars spend their time socializing with friends, going to concerts, parties and special events for a good time. These places are perfect breeding grounds for avies looking to date or even hook up. Many get involved in romantic situations.  Finding the right companion could feel like a whirlwind fairy tale romance at first that leads to some great love stories or unfortunate nightmares. The SL Enquirer set out to ask avies across the grid about their worst dating experience in Second Life and we got some interesting responses! * Names have been changed to protect their identities.

SLE: What is the worst dating experience you ever had in SL?

Dixie: “Dated someone who was into bestiality in BOTH worlds. The way he talked about it was so nonchalant like it was 100% normal in his eyes, he even gave pointers to a friend of mine on how to have a Horse give you a proper blowjob. I just tried to see past it, but it still haunted me and still does to this day. I am glad i never met up with him in RL. Lord knows what would have happened and to be honest I'd rather not think about. Yikes.”

Chase: “Well, when they proposed to me to tell my worst date in SL, I remembered having had various stories in SL, and the truth is that I would not know which one to qualify as the worst, one of my worst moments was at the beginning when they took me to a beach and they invited me to sit on a towel for the first time and I saw that in SL if it is possible for a woman to rape a man, I suddenly found myself making love with a girl and I didn't even have a penis, I was left naked without male member letting the menu of that towel be handled by that girl, until it seemed to me that she lost interest in me, I felt powerless of not having a virile member and I teleported from there ashamed. That's when I experienced how crazy SL could be. On another occasion, also at the beginning, I found a girl on a beach that I invited to a hut to have sex, she was totally arousing when she suddenly told me that I was younger, wow, all the arousal went down all of a sudden, then she told me That was a joke, but I no longer knew what to believe and I was totally perplexed, what a bitch :)).”

Harold:My story comes from 2015 when a lovely avi at a dj set at a club IM's me with the line of "you did an amazing job on your avi".  A couple months went by and after we hit it off greatly, exchanged pics and talked on voice we were married in SL.  She portrayed herself as a Nurse from the UK.  Heavy British accent and the whole nine yards.  Amazingly beautiful RL pics as well.  A month or so goes by and I get a random IM from someone I did not know saying they are having a get together to discuss my partner.  Curiosity gets the best of me so I show up.  In a nutshell, much to my surprise, there are at least 15 people there and (2) other guys that she is partnered to on alt accounts on SL.  She was actually in the United States and never even been to the UK, it was her hobby to practice a British accent in her spare time.  The beautiful pics she sent........Haha were of an adult star (clothed) from Norway she pulled off of the internet.  Once I confronted her about it, she poofed and closed that account to never be seen or heard from again. The same with the other 2 guys she was partnered to on other accounts.  It just goes to show that if something seems too good to be true, odds are it is Haha. :)”

Wendy: “I met my ex at a Halloween party back in October of 2017. I was invited by some friends and was dancing when he messaged me asking if I would like to dance.  I was fine with it but a little bit nervous. I never really had a partner in SL. I guess you could say I was an sl virgin. He was funny and nice and we hit it off. He wasn’t online too much so we saw each other when we could and went to concerts. He asked me to be his girlfriend after a couple of weeks and told me he wanted to show me what he was working on and he sent me a tp. When I got there he said it was his private home!  After showing me around we sat on the sofa to talk. He started showing me the different poses and one thing led to another and we were having sex. Not even a couple  minutes later some girl tp’s in right on top of us in the middle of it!!. He acted like he didn't know who she was and quickly ejected her and got really quiet and then logged off. I thought he crashed. As I was waiting there,  I got an IM from the girl he kicked out telling me that they were dating for a year and proceeded to insult me about ruining her relationship! I left and blocked her and unfriended him too. I never felt so humiliated!!”

Parker: “My Date from hell! Was at a familiar club I go to often. My SL sister is a DJ there so I go from time to time just to listen to music and have fun. I was alone just having some Local chat laughs and a girl hit my box. She said hi and complimented me on how nice my avatar was. I thanked her and kept listening to my sister DJ. She continued to ask me questions about what I like to do in SL . So from then we have some basic conversations. SO I asked her if she wanted to continue our conversation while enjoying a dance, She agreed. The set was over and was late but we decided to meet up again at a place she liked . I thought ok why not sure lets do it. She told me she likes the beach so to wear some beach trunks. I didn't think anything of it so I agreed. Next day comes and she tp's me to a Beach, I was thinking of just US relaxing on a nice beach to get to know eachother better but she had other plans for us but to my surprise it was a SEX breeding beach. SHOCKED is an understatement, she invited me to an ORGY on the beach and was like come on over and join us ROFL. that orgy they was in voice and all those women suddenly becomes RL men with horrible trucker voices lol   I tped out so fast my head was spinning and of course I muted and BURNED her card over a bomb fire hehehe”

Claire : “I dated a person for a few months and things were progressing very nicely, at least I thought so. I found out from a friend of mine that he was dating a few other people at the same time. I questioned him about it and he obviously denied it. I wanted to put it past us because he made me laugh and happy when I logged in. But as the time went by, he would often IM me stuff that we weren’t talking about and actually called me someone else’s name. So I asked a few friends to “spy” on him and they found him in a Strip club with two women on his lap. I confronted him and he was obviously surprised and embarrassed and we broke up. A month later he msged me and asked me to voice. I said sure why not I can say a few things kinda like face to face. When we voiced it was a WOMAN and she apologized and said she wanted to try something new.. Damn, that was a slap in the face. Needless to say I told everyone about it and he/she doesn’t come around anymore probably on an ALT

Lenny:  um, have never dated beyond clicking on a statue in a castle once and got royally rogered! lololol”

Karen: “Don’t ask me about my personal life, I am offended and calling the police.”

As you can see the craziest things can happen while dating in Second Life. From gender imposters and catfishing to just plain horrible partners!  If you were caught up in an SL dating horror situation, share your story in the comments below!

The Muses - Music Driven- Meet the DJs- A.B. Tucker Reporting

“SL = One Nation Under a Groove” - Sugaree Rose.

In two wild and wonderful months, The Muses transformed from a sand platform on the mainland into a growing, thriving community.  The driving force on this rollercoaster ride has been the DJs.  The Muses’ DJs are fabulous: Rob Skytower, Grizzly Silversmith, Bre, Dave, Sugaree Rose, and Grougan Oxbar.

DJ Rob Skytower is a seasoned SL DJ who describes himself as a “classic rock, oldies, and more” DJ. Rob is well-known for his decade on the rock and metal circuit. More recently, he has ventured out a different direction. A friend encouraged Rob to try his hand at “ballroom” and today he has one of the most unique ballroom sets on the grid.  Aerosmith, Frank Sinatra, Spandau Ballet, Herb Albert, Bob Seger, and Norah Jones might all be heard in the same hour.

DJ Rob likes being a “project DJ”.  He will take an idea or a theme, find the right songs, weave the set together just so, and make magic. “I work well with managers, owners, and other staff to make sure that everyone, including guests, leaves my sets going ‘WOW, never heard those songs that way’.”

DJ Dave is the newest addition to the lineup, and The Muses was lucky enough to be his very first gig.  He cut his DJ teeth at The Edge beach during one of the contest hours of fishing and raffles.  Dave describes his music style as mostly country.  He shares with us his music library of modern and classic country music.

DJ Bre ended a DJing hiatus to grace The Muses with her presence.  Also working one of the contest hours, DJ Bre does blues, rock, country, and creates a great dance party.  Bre admits, “doing mush” is a favorite DJ task, she loves spinning romance.  She is gaining a reputation as a big “By Request” DJ, as Bre ends each set by asking the crowd what they want to hear the next week.

DJ Grougan Oxbar is another long-time SL DJ.  He has worked in many genres, but his favorite and best is romance.  His warm-brandy voice will melt you from the inside out.  His smooth, ballroom romance style will have you dancing on air.  In his non-DJ, SL life, Gro plays in a band and has started a singing career.

DJ Grizzly Silversmith has been spinning in iconic clubs across SL for twelve years.  He has DJed and sung for several of SL’s annual birthday events.  One of the best audiophiles on the grid, his sets are filled with the finest blues, country, and romance to be found.  Currently, Grizz is bringing EVERYTHING BLUES to The Muses at Azure, a casual, oceanside nightclub.

DJ Grizz is a Second Life tour guide.  Via hot air balloon and gondola rides, Grizz will introduce you to the regions and continents of SL.  Outside of SL, Grizz has many hobbies, including podcasting.  Look for Grizzly’s Growls podcasts!

DJ Sugaree has been written about in blogs, mentioned on internet radio, and it has been so aptly stated by another, “Her sets go down like velvet honey.”  DJ Sugaree put her introduction in her own words.  “People who come to my shows immediately comment on my voice. Music, and my voice, are gifts from God, and I try to bring love, joy, peace and friendship into my sets. I love Smooth anything!  Funk and R&B, Motown, Disco, Oldies, or Romance music are the genres I am most familiar with.”

“I've been referred to as 'SL's Cover Queen', and I am biased toward cover songs! My collection of wonderful 'covers' comes mostly from my fans and listeners. I've been DJing in Second Life exclusively for seven years and I love it.   I love the people I meet even more.  I am currently playing from the Sugaree Songbook at The Muses.  Come by, see for yourself.  And Oh Yes, bring me a cover song!”

On Tuesday, DJ Dave is at The Edge beach, and DJ Rob takes over the ballroom.  DJ Grizzly spins amazing blues on Wednesday.  On Thursday Sugaree hosts a DANCE PARTY with a different theme every week. Friday has DJ Gro and DJ Sugaree doing back to back romance.

Saturday is DATE NIGHT with DJ Sugaree in Cristall. It’s a wonderful romantic set, and setting.  DJ Rob rounds out the week at The Edge with his ROCK ON THE EDGE set, any style rock, rock from any decade, and it is never dull.

The Muses’ venues include Cristall, a romantic ballroom set inside a vintage champagne glass.  Azure is a casual, oceanside nightclub that hosts almost any music genre.  The Edge is a pristine beach with contest hours of 7Seas fishing tournaments and club-sponsored raffles, sailing, swimming, lounging, or some friendly competition on the game deck.  Each venue is just a pretty build until our DJs bring them life with music.

The Muses has a subscriber that sends out a weekly schedule, or guests can join the group to get notices about all The Muses’ events. Come enjoy phenomenal DJs and incredible music.  Follow Your Muse…  to The Muses.
