Shark Week At LeLoo's World- Stacey Cardalines Reporting...

Summer is known for her iconography, things like beach days, cookouts, fireworks, parades, baseball and so forth. It is also known for Sharks,

Sharks- unfairly- are summer's main Villain. A shark could kill you in a blizzard if you crossed paths, but you are more likely to run into Mr. Toothy during the summer months, when you are swimming. This sort of ties Summer and Sharks together. That's why the Discovery Channel does Shark Week in July, and it's why LeLoo's World is currently doing Shark Week.

I talked to LeLoo for a while, forgot to ask her what the sim does the rest of the year (I know she does some Halloween stuff, which I will check out at a future date), but we can get to that later. People like LeLoo, who have an interest and start building that interest into an actual sim, are who make SL go. What she is doing now is Shark Week. LeLoo is a shark lover, and she gives the sim over to the Fish Fatale every July. She expects to leave the sim up for about three weeks, so get to steppin'.

Sharks predate man, predate Moses, and at least some ancestor of theirs probably ate a dinosaur. They are, as Dr. Hooper described them, a perfect engine. They swim, eat, f*ck... nothing else. There will never be Shark Culture, Shark Science, Shark Economics... they are not in the running for Species Most Likely To Create Space Shuttles. Sharks have little need for all that stuff humans worry about, which is a shame because they'd really enjoy all the attention and celebrity that they get on the Discovery Channel. They just hang out and chow. Very few sharks right now are saying, "I haven't written anything for a month, Lanai is going to fire me."

Sharks and humans should never meet. Humans aren't designed for the water, and we only move through water with great difficulty and innovation. We need things like boats, inner tubes, scuba tanks, submarines, flippers, masks and wetsuits. Sharks, who need to be pushing through water in order to breathe, are equally unsuited for the dry land part of the Surf & Turf. Sharks are aware of this, and only come ashore by accident. Humans, on the other hand, figured out ways to survive in the water. Sharks, just by doing what they do, disturb that equation.

Humans pretty much run the planet, and are the masters of all they survey. That gets a bit touchy if a tiger or a cobra is around, but that's why the gods made guns and Rikki Tikki Tavi. For the most part, humans can avoid being killed by animals if they avoid areas that Lions or Crocodiles hang out. However, you can get Offed by doing something as simple as swimming, and it doesn't matter if you are swimming under the lights of New York City if a shark comes around. In fact ("fact" in this case means "legend,"), the first white guy eaten by a shark in America was killed in the Hudson River.

An American can laugh off a bear attack as a deep forest thing. They can laugh off alligator attacks as a Florida thing. But we all like to go to the beach, and we all like to go swimming. When we do that, we sacrifice our place at the top of the food chain. Humans don't do that too often, and the psychological effect is profound.

The Discovery Channel does not devote a week to people getting hit by lightning, although- according to the stats I'm looking at- you are 50 times more likely to die from a lightning strike than a shark attack. Come to think of it, I'd watch a show where it was just people getting hit by lightning, so maybe that's a bad example.

OK, you are 800 times more likely to die of Extreme Cold. Aside from people who live in alligator country and want to laugh back at Yankees who laughed at them getting snatched by a crocodile, very few viewers would tune in to watch a week of programming devoted to people freezing to death. It would be a week of basically the end of The Shining. Freezing people just sit still and freeze, if you were clicking by and saw a show on it, you'd think the video broadcast had seized up. Bad for ratings. No Va.

There are at least some years where more people are killed by a vending machine toppling over onto them as they try to shake a Snickers loose than are killed by sharks. There is no sim on SL devoted to vending machines falling over onto people. I know... I checked. I'd also watch a show about that, but we're near the end of the tangent.

Freezing to death, getting hit by lightning or having a Coke machine fall on you, while killing you as dead as a shark would, won't eat you afterwards. That fact, plus the shark's basic Jungian archetypical role as America's Dragon, propel them into Superstardom.

Shark Week at LeLoo's World is a fun visit. It is a beach scene, although my Cape Codder beach radar tells me "Atlantic Canada" for some je-ne-sais-quoi reason. You can very easily spend a pleasant SL beach day here without even being interested in sharks, I posed with two sandcastle snowmen and floated on an inflatable shark which didn't try to eat me. One thing I learned as a wandering reporter is that sim design should have a main theme, like Sharks, but should also have a basic background blueprint, like Atlantic Canada. This sim nails that. It is a perfectly normal beach... with a deadly twist.

If the editors include the picture with me, the shark and the surfboard, know that I spent quite some time trying to flip from shore onto that surfboard for a more effective, close up shot. I was a cheerleader for the SLCS for a while, and I was- and am- very good at the flipping part. I can pretty much flip up onto any surface, and land on a dime. I'm known for it in the circles in which I travel. I could not stick that jump. I tried 25 times, each failure dunking me about 20 feet deep in the ocean. I had to walk out, too. I couldn't just flip back onto shore. The surfboard was about a half meter further than my best leap, even with a running start. Pissed me off... but that's not the sim's fault.

The other stupid thing I did was try the Dunk Tank. This is the basic carnival dunk tank, where you throw a ball at a target and dunk the person sitting over the water tank. This may be a Massachusetts thing, but this is a job usually handled by an insult comic in a clown suit at all the carnivals I go to. "Try to drown the rude, rude clown." However, at Shark Week, the water tank has a shark in it. I was by myself on this assignment, so I couldn't throw the ball while concurrently sitting on the dunking platform. I offered a fellow visitor 100 Ls if she'd sit there while I dunked her, but she declined.

I did sit on the platform (I nailed that flip), and even dropped into the tank for a picture with the shark that came out so well that I declined to use it. I jumped back on the platform, and then jumped off the platform afterwards. Too late to stop myself, I realized that I was emulating Fonzie. I was jumping the shark. I always knew that day would come, but the sudden self-realization was like a hammer blow.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 30th July at noon SLT: Crackpot ideas!

Throughout the ages many crackpot ideas have actually come true.  Human flight, the moon  landing, the idea that the moon causes tides, the existence of gorillas, the movement of the continents.  Let’s discuss these ideas.  What made people think they were crackpot?  What moved them to mock the inventors and intellectuals that had these ideas?

What are the current crackpot ideas that could turn out to be true?  Sentient AI?  Moon travel (again)?  Faster than light travel? Teleportation?  Does science benefit from ‘crackpot’ ideas? Have all the best scientists been a bit crackpot?

Join us in GeekSpeak at noon SLT on Saturday to discuss weird past and future ideas.  Bring your friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

Spotlight on The Woolshed- Ely Catronis Reporting...

Wandering around in the overnight hours of the Second Life Clock, you don’t often get to find many experiences available to people, and not something like what I stumbled into one evening. I was welcomed into the WoolShed, a unique experience with that Aussie Outback ambiance where you can come together for great music, fun times, and a place to hang out and meet some new friends.  I had the pleasure to sit down with the extremely passionate and personable Owner, Spiker Upshaw for a chat about this amazing and unique experience.

Interview with Spike (Spiker Upshaw)

Ely Catronis (EC): Hello Spike, thanks for meeting with me today. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind telling our readers a little bit about yourself.  Where are you from and how did you discover Second Life?

Spike: Hello Ely, I am living on the west coast of Australia in a city called Perth. I was originally born in Canada but my family immigrated here back in Nov. ‘72. A bit over 15 years ago I was watching a current affairs program called 60 minutes. They had an article on “virtual worlds” that were becoming all the craze, and particularly featured Second Life. It got my curiosity going but it was a few weeks before I remembered and decided to check it out. A bit over 15 years later, I am still here.

EC: It does have a charm somehow that does draw us in. Curious what inspired you to get into the Entertainment industry here in Second Life?

Spike: I was bumming around SL for a while and trying to find what it was I wanted to do. Well, one thing I have always thought about was owning a Jazz & Blues club and figured, well, I can do that here. So a friend of mine who was also an RL designer offered to build me a club and that club was my first, called Ocean Dreams Jazz & Blues. At the time, I had also become very close friends with a lady who was interested in the club scene as well. So together we started Ocean Dreams which I ran for about 8-1/2 years.

EC: It is always so interesting to hear how people get started and how their journeys develop along.  You started with a Jazz Club, which I still see is there, where did you get the idea of the WoolShed?

Spike: Well after closing Ocean Dreams Jazz & Blues Club, after maybe 4 or 5 months I went on to build another club, this time a rock club called Aussie Rock or Bust. This went on for about 18 months and I closed another club. After having had Ocean Dreams for so long, I was a little burned out and didn't really get Aussie Rock off the ground. I had a very good friend that had a live music club Kameleonz. She had closed Kamz, as it was known, and we were talking about clubs. I was still interested in the club scene, and live music in SL. So she suggested that we should build something uniquely Australian, and suggested a woolshed. So, I got to building and, The WoolShed was born!

EC: What can visitors expect when they drop into WoolShed?

Spike: What we like to promote is firstly, the great live music scene that is alive in SL. The other thing that I have always wanted was a place folk could come and relax and have a good time. I am very passionate about music and my love for a very wide range of genres. So that is what we try to give people, a place that provides good music, fun, and some great company with the people who come from all parts of the world.

EC: While touring the Woolshed, I noticed that love, passion, and the unique layout through the variety of areas to visit. Can you explain to our readers what sets the WoolShed apart from the other Venues and clubs in SL?

Spike: Well most clubs are mainly based around one club and venue with maybe a bit to explore. I have always been interested in the creative aspect of SL  and so I love to create. So I figured that what I could give is a place that not only has a great venue but some great places to explore and relax or enjoy some different aspects of my creativity with friends or just on their own. It's an expansion of some of the things I have explored and loved here in this amazing place called Second Life.

EC: How can someone learn about the events that happen around the WoolShed? Where do you post your events?

Spike: We post our events on SL events and I try to do posts on my Facebook page, as well as some other group pages, and The WoolShed, also has its own FB page. I have an ad running in another magazine that is printed every month. I have also placed ads on some advertising boards in various places around SL and of course I have the club featured as a pick in my profile.

EC: That will help our readers keep in touch with you. Can you tell us a little about the talented staff you have here?

Spike: With "staff" so to speak, there are a number of positions in the club group like the talented singers who are the club entertainers known as WoolShed Shearers, a manager known as a Jillaroo, our Blogger, myself known as Boss Cocky, and the most important member of our staff group, our host, Aurora. Aurora has the title of Woolie Jumper (host) and Jillaroo Trainee, and she is critical to the club's function. A good host needs to be friendly & welcome folk into the club, they need to be chatty in local which will help people relax and enjoy their time at the club. Aurora does all of that and more and that is what makes her a great host.

EC: Sounds like you have a great variety of people there and Aurora sounds like a wonderful resource. Are you hiring at the WoolShed?  If so, for which positions and how does someone apply?

Spike: We are continually looking at new singers and looking at what more we can offer people who come to visit the club. At the moment I am looking for a couple of blues singers that could complement our Blues event held every second Sunday. They can contact me, my partner Pandora or our amazing host, Aurora.

EC: Are there other events or activities that the Wool Shed is involved with?

Spike: The club has been a sponsor with groups such as TAO (Together As One) and Camping For a Cure and we hope to expand and continue sponsoring or being involved with some of the worthy causes around SL. If anyone is looking for a sponsor, they can contact me.

EC: Thank you for your time for chatting with me today. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Spike: Over the last 15 years, it has been quite an amazing journey. I would like to thank everyone that supports the club through live music or other events. I would like to thank the singers of past and present who have performed at one or more of the clubs I have owned. I would also like to thank some of the amazing people who are or have been some of my closest friends, Aurora, Pyrite Destiny, Whisp Ampan, Harlow Anatine, Mellifera Szondi, Petar, and of course my wife, Pandora who I met here in SL and joined our SL & RL lives. All of these people have helped to make this journey the amazing thing it has become. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Without your friendships and companionship, none of this would have happened.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 23rd July at noon SLT: Can we still pick low-hanging fruit in science?

Science seems to require so much money and so many people nowadays.  But are there still fields where ordinary people, amateurs, can discover things?  In the past a lot of discoveries were made by amateurs, sometimes people like Mary Anning who were not allowed to be professionals.

But even now discoveries are made in astronomy, archaeology, biology and other fields by amateurs.  Amateurs like Clara Lazen or Thomas Bopp.

Perhaps there are fields that exclude amateurs, like materials science.  But who knows?  Join us on Saturday at noon SLT to discover what you could potentially discover.  Put on a lab coat and safety goggles and bring your microscopes.

Branding Advice for Any Fashion Business in 2022

Establishing a business is rapidly evolving into a new craze as over 33 million businesses are entering the market. But unfortunately, more than half of these businesses fail in the second year, and those who do survive typically do so because they rely heavily on branding.

Given this dependence, it is clear to see how branding has evolved and plays a big role in every successful business’s growth.

As a fashion entrepreneur, you must understand that your fashion business needs a strong brand identity if you want it to stand out and succeed in its sector.

And because we recognize that branding is a difficult process, we're going to show you three reliable strategies that’d help you create a strong brand and distinguish your company from its competitors.

Three Solid Steps to Building an Excellent Fashion Brand

  1. Pay Close Attention to Customer Satisfaction

You'd be surprised at how frequently business owners launch their businesses before even considering their potential customers and the crucial role their services will play in their lives. This is despite the fact that the majority of entrepreneurs seem to understand that their company cannot excel without a strong brand image and a wide customer base.

Although it’s not a fashion company, Juicero is a fantastic example of a business with a modern product that adds minimal value to the lives of its clients. And because the brand never addressed the problems of its target market, it failed.

Two errors we typically see business owners who don’t respect their clients enough to carry out market research are:

First off, they squander tons of cash on social media marketing for their 'excellent' products and/or services that fall short of their target customers' fundamental needs.

The second mistake is that they fail to see that, despite their small percentage, their most dedicated customers have the economic output that their fashion business requires.

Therefore, be sure you are aware of the difficulties your clients are experiencing if you want your firm to succeed. Find out if they prefer budget-friendly or high-end, pricey fashion items. Dig into their financial standing and preferred fashion trends.

With the help of this knowledge, you'll be able to launch a successful fashion business, think of catchy business name ideas, and develop a tone and personality that appeals to your target market.

  1. Craft an Appealing Personality for Your Fashion Brand

Every dedicated entrepreneur spends a lot of time and energy refining and improving their products until they're just right; likewise, you too must make sure you invest enough time and energy into developing a compelling brand image for your fashion business.

The identity of your business is ultimately influenced by your company's personality, how you sell your services, the ideas you promote, how you connect and communicate online, and the impressions your clients have when employing your services or buying your fashion goods.

However, you must go further with your company's personality if you want your brand to engage clients on a deeper level.

To do so, make your brand's identity a captivating promise to your customers, much like how Gucci guarantees its customers fine workmanship combined with eye-catching and daring designs.

  1. Get Your Company a Strong Brand Name

Building your business's reputation, expanding its internet presence, and attracting a sizable following of committed customers all depend on selecting a distinctive and catchy brand name that can captivate your audience.

The success of your business depends on how customers perceive it. The two best ways to come up with a memorable name for your firm are brainstorming and using a company name generator.

True, creating a great company requires a lot of time and work. Even experienced business people frequently struggle to create a distinctive brand identity for their goods and services, but we are confident that the techniques we’ve shown you above will help you construct an outstanding brand for your fashion business in little time.

Far too many fine establishments are sadly found only by word of mouth. We feel it is time to come together in a community mindset! To that end, Rumors Nightclub promotes any and all music clubs which play these genres, even if they are open during the same hours. There is more than enough love and patrons to go around. Simply IM Jasmine Heartsong if you are a club owner who wishes for free advertisement for your Urban music club. Remember, if you’re looking for that upscale, ultra-chill, and ultra-smooth vibe, be sure to visit Rumors Nightclub & Lounge. We’re open every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. SLT. And if you’re looking for a special spot to bring your date, check us out on Wednesdays for Slow Jams Night.

LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR BREAKING NEWS!

As finalist Gabriela Seubert withdrew from the competition, LUXE Paris asked the semi-finalist with the subsequent highest score if she wanted to jump on the bandwagon, and our offer was enthusiastically accepted.

Therefore KEIRA RHAPSODY is now in the running for the prestigious LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR title and the super prize of L$50,000 that accompanies it!

Of course, a special team was immediately formed by the agency One On One, producer of the final LOOK of the YEAR, so that Keira could benefit from all the teachings and tools already received by the other finalists.

We also asked Keira to prepare a text for the jury, explaining why she would be a good ambassador for LUXE Paris. The jury will receive this text by email within a few days.

Congratulations Keira!
