Spotlight on Deejays and Host Hall of Fame-” Music keeps us balanced and happy. Life makes us want more”- Lanai Jarrico reporting…

Music holds special meanings to everyone in some way or another. It can be nostalgic and evoke fond memories, makes us sad or gets us excited. Music can be powerful enough to change our moods in different ways.  Deejays and Host Hall of fame is a place in Second Life where fans can show appreciation to DJs and hosts that create the atmosphere at venues across the grid. Not only do they honor DJs and hosts, there is a University where visitors can come learn the trade and appreciate music from a variety of genres spun by these essential club workers in Second Life.

I caught up with 3D (Dia Dufaux) to learn more about Deejays and Host Hall of Fame and what the facility has to offer.

Interview with 3D (Dia Dufaux)

SLE: Hi Dia, it's a pleasure to meet you. I see that your organization  recently celebrated their 9th Birthday in SL. Congratulations! How did you discover Second Life and what do you do here?

Dia: The Sl Deejay and Hosts Hall of Fame  celebrated our 9th birthday. We are honored to be a part of SL.  We didn't discover SL,  SL discovered us. My partner and myself fell in love with the vibrant mixture of clubs, deejays and music in SL. We are both deejays, former club owners and I owned SL Rock and Roll Museum.

SLE: I like that. “SL discovered you”.  I think it is great that you offer a facility where visitors can appreciate the hard work Djs and hosts do to create the atmosphere at venues in Second Life. Can you share with our readers what type of establishment DJ and Host HOF is?

Dia: SL DJS and Hosts Hall of Fame is a non. profit  organization that honors some of SL clubs finest dj's and hosts. We have designated criteria that we follow when viewing djs and hosts.  We want to  hear and view what the  SL VIPs who attend SL clubs see and hear.

SLE: I’m a big fan of the music scene in SL and I think it is great what you are doing.  I know it takes a strong team to organize everything and keep things running successfully. Who makes up your HOF board members and team. What are their specific roles?

Dia: There are two owners; Myself and my SL partner, Chris62 Greybeard, and a co owner our SL daughter and HOF builder Rae Greybeard.

We have an in-house staff which includes our amazing plaque designer Squeeeeeaks who started in 2016.

The late Dj Stevie Ray Vaughn who was our plaque designer from 2014- 2016

Our sound and lighting tech Is  Dj. LASERSS420 Lorefield

Our Induction Presenter roles was previously held by DJ James Eastman from 2016 to 2020; We have had a few guest presenters as well.

Concierge Dj Rocky Sutera who assists our inductees with the induction process. The role was previously held by Dj Peki Carminucci and Isabelle Eastman.

Our Induction host for the last 5 years has been HOF Host Tyger6

Plus, Our 21 amazing Board members who donate their time to view our inductees.  We couldn't do what we do without them. They are our backbone!!

SLE: That is quite a team! You recently opened Jay Jones Honorary Deejay HOF. I like that you have a memorial Hall of Fame, who are some of the DJS and Hosts that are honored there?

Dia: We have the Jay Jones Honorary Deejays Hall and we also have the Honorary Maire Bravits Host Hall. Both are deceased in RL / SL. They loved SL clubs, music and dedicated a lot of their time to inworld clubs and entertainment here in SL. Our Honorary Deejays Hall is for deejays who have worked in SL clubs for 10+ years and more. We have a Memorial Hall and Garden where we honor many deejays and hosts who had past away in SL/RL.

SLE:  It is wonderful that you have a Memorial for those who have passed. It also helps with the healing process for those who were friends and fans.  There’s also a HOF university, what type of classes do you offer and what happens after graduation? Is their Venue job placement?

DIA: Our  SRV HOF University is an advanced learning experience for deejays and hosts with basic skills (experienced) but want to enhance them. We use inducted, experienced and skilled HOF deejays and hosts from the grid to present them. We don't have a job placement center here, My Partner and myself own 2 djs and hosts hiring groups that are free to use and open to all!!

SLE: What a great resource to offer all Djs and Hosts. How can visitors nominate their favorite DJ’s and hosts for the hall of fame?

Dia: Nomination is open to all deejays and Hosts who have worked in SL clubs for over 2 years. They can nominate themselves or others can nominate them. We have an application board available at our landing point, along with a mailbox for posting the applications. We ask that people walk about the hall and view what we do. I think some people want to be here but they have no idea what the Hall of Fame is about.

SLE:They will know now by reading this interview!  How do you announce new inductees to DJs and the Host Hall of Fame?

Dia: Our concierge  DJ. Rocky will  contact them to let them know when they are accepted into the hall of fame. He attains information for their plaque design, and walks them through the induction process. Next step  we let our group and facebook page know and contact our texture designer to prepare hof  invites. I need to state that not all djs and hosts who apply to the hall are accepted. Only those who pass our designated criteria will be inducted.

SLE: How many inductees are displayed there now and when is your next induction ceremony?

Dia:  We have almost 500 deejay's and hosts who have been inducted into HOF, not all their plaques are on display . Its sad to say but most djs and hosts who we have been honored, never come back  to the hall to view them.  Most received their plaques and we never hear from them again.  Induction  is presented on the last Sunday of each month. Next  Induction is  Sunday, August 27th at 3 pm.

SLE: Do you have a group visitors can join to stay up to date with events that happen?

Dia: Yes, our group is the SL MUSIC MUSEUM GROUP!!  it is open to all but vips can not spam our group. Only HOF business is allowed.

secondlife:///app/group/f6f40836-c826-1e9e-6e90-e6c8ee9c8439/about

SLE: What other activities do you offer?

Dia: We have a gaming area with games to play. We do concerts and we have music festivals in the spring, summer and xmas along with a winter wonderland for all to enjoy featuring HOF deejays and hosts. Next Music fest is this month. The hall of fame  is always open for weddings, memorial services and events if an inductee wants to use it.

SLE:Thank you for all you do in Second Life to help be a part of keeping the music scene what it is today.  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Dia: I have shared so much about the hall and I still could say lots more but to keep it short.  I would like to invite everyone to stop by and view some of the plaques representing the best talent in SL clubs. We have a staff board in our first-floor lobby which shows who from our staff is online and will assist you with your questions.  In closing I would like to say thank you and please stop by soon.

Canipanic Maslow and the ongoing legacy of the ~O~ Lounge - Wendz Tempest Reporting

The history of the  ~O~ Lounge is rich and colorful with humble beginnings, a love for all music genres, and an appreciation for all types of voices. Novice, intermediate, professional, these titles do not mean as much as the fun and camaraderie experienced in the wonderful world of Karaoke entertainment.

In the front and center, managing the ~O~ Lounge is Canipanic Maslow, veteran producer & performer on the fly, who has recently moved the lounge’s location to another region, complete with a new and larger venue. This year, the  ~O~ Lounge turns 16 and continues to open its doors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, still the prime location for discovering Second Life’s latest and greatest on the live music scene.

Here we ask Cani a few questions about himself and questions about what his greatest work in Second Life is.

WT- Please tell the readers a little about yourself, how you came to Second Life?

Canipanic Maslow (CM)- Initially I came to Second Life because I was playing Tiger Woods Golf on my computer. And I saw something that mentioned this 3D Virtual World, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’d be neat, I’ll see if they have golf.’  So I signed up for it and came in. They didn’t have golf. I found a golf shop in my search, but they only sold clothing. So for the first year or so, I just walked around visiting people and hanging out at different campsites, learning how to do simple things. And that’s about all I did until I decided to start the  ~O~ Lounge.”

WT- How about telling the readers how you were personally involved in the creation of the  ~O~ Lounge?

CM - I was hanging around this girl, named Bell Clellon, and she was a KJ (Karaoke Jockey) in real life. She had a thing she did every week in her town, where she went out there and ran the karaoke thing. I was hanging around with her and I said, “Well let’s do it here!”.  So she was the inspiration for it. When we tried it back then, there was no voice (in SL) so we tried it on Skype, and anybody that wanted to join us had to join Skype. It was really problematic. Basically, I gave up, thinking it couldn't be done.

One day I was hanging around a girl named Mitzi, we were on voice, and she told me, “Cani, mute your mic. I love this song!”. I didn’t know what she meant, but I muted my mic. And then she turned her speakers on, and she sang.

And that was the day the ~O~ Lounge was born because then everything was in sync. It dawned on me that as long as the microphone could hear the voice and the speakers at the same time, it’ll be in sync. Because before, we could never get everything in sync. That was the day Karaoke was born in Second Life. Open Mic Karaoke. There was nothing like that before. There were performers, but nothing with Open Mic.

And it took off right away. Mitzi was the builder so she built the lounge, and I went all around and was telling people about it. Nobody believed me. I’d say, “Next week we’re going to start Karaoke.” And they’d say, “Karaoke, what are you talking about, you can’t do karaoke here.”

Our grand opening was a hit, there were 28 people there because everyone was curious as to how we were going to do Karaoke in Second Life. We only did it once a week at that time, but people wanted more. It became 2 days a week for a few hours. Then more days and more hours, and people weren’t leaving after 5 hours. It was just a matter of 3 months when we decided to make it full-time, 24/7, because nobody would go home, they just wanted to sing and sing. And we’ve been like that ever since.

WT - What else do you do in Second Life to promote the Live music scene?

CM- Elvera and I, (Elvera Lerner is the co-owner of the  ~O~ Lounge with me), she is the co-owner of the ~O~ Lounge also, and The Music Hall of Fame Group. She keeps me firmly planted in reality and my head out of the clouds.

The Music Hall of Fame Group was started by a woman named BringitOn Paine. She was one of the biggest promoters of the music scene in Second Life. She became ill and couldn’t continue on so she asked Elvera and I if she could take it over for her. In most groups with singers, all they’re able to do is send out notices for their shows.

WT- Please elaborate on what the Music Hall of Fame group is?
CM- The Music Hall of Fame has a resource center. These performers can add their names to be hired and venue owners can come in and click on a board. There are three buttons which are, fees or tips, the genre they want, and the day of the week/time they need them to perform. There are 170 top performers on that Music Hall of Fame board and only the ones that fit that category or criteria, are going to be shown to them.

There’s also a board up there with all the open mic places and karaoke places I could find in Second Life because new performers need to get established. I always bring new performers to the resource center, and I show them that board and tell them they need to go to as many open mics as they can, to become established. Venue owners go there looking for people to hire, and that’s the way people get to know you.

There are other resources like where to get your stream, Soundcloud links, ReverbNation, or youtube, wherever they have their music.

I encourage people at the  ~O~ Lounge to start performing when I hear someone that I think can do it. Plus I also help people learn how to stream. That’s what I do, and everyone around me tends to be the same way. They have the same passions.

WT- The  ~O~ Lounge continues to be a haven for novices and professionals alike, and your work with the Music Hall of Fame has helped so many performers. Tell us a little bit about what you’re currently working on?

CM- I have an  ~O~ Karaoke Lounge website that’s being worked on right now that is going to promote a lot of people as well as the  ~O~ Karaoke Lounge Podcast that I’ve reinstated which started in 2012.  I’ll be doing interviews, teaching people how to stream, making videos on how to stream, and dual stream, as well as making videos on the various broadcasters and how to set those up.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: God is a DJ – and playing at The Basilica

The central dome flashes pink than green, and the stately Corinthian columns are awash with pulsing light. Pink. Green. Pink. Green. Here we live life between 120 and 150 beats per minute. The marble floor reflects the sea of writhing sweaty bodies, while the high clerestory windows instil a sense of reverence in its grandeur. This is The Basilica, a club in SL like no other. The Basilica is a club that focuses on electronic dance music (EDM) but loves all forms of music. “Music is the human condition in stereo,” says co-owner, Trynn Mildor, “it reflects the best of what we are, and often the darkest too”. DJ and talent scout for the club, DJ Kryx, puts it a little less subtly: “Music is like being f%^*ed in the earhole, even when it’s bad it’s good”. At this club, music is treated with almost religious fervour and ranges from the snarling sounds of synthpop to the melodic mix of liquid drum and bass. With music at its heart, The Basilica sets the scene for many different interactions. Apart from the lively dance floor in the nave, the outer aisles offer space for socialising. Here the IMs are as hot and as throbbing as the sexiness on the dancefloor. “Music is a universal language, it’s the perfect backdrop for new friendships, saucy hookups and perhaps even love, “says Emily Silkstone the other half of the owner duo. Situated high in the decorative apses of the lovely building, high above the pulsing crowd, are balcony boxes that are for rent for private parties. Each box seats eight people and has furniture with delightful animations. It is a different vantage point, offering a more designated space without being taken out of the sturm and drang that is the club. “We chose this setting, and the name because music and togetherness have the power to feed the soul, to heal, to restore,” says Trynn of the venue and the name of the club. In fact, researchers have found there is an inextricable link between music and religion as music is one of the most common triggers of religious experience. “Like faith, or religion, music is a transcending experience – it taps into a metaphysical state of being, it lights up centres of the brain that we do not access easily with our conscious minds. So, we believe it to be quite apt.” The club will host its epic opening on 11 March 2023, join the group to stay up to date with the latest news. Leading up to the epic opening of The Basilica, the club is launching a Flickr competition in which a whopping 10 000 lindens are up for grabs. Participants are invited to photograph themselves anywhere at the venue and post their pictures to The Basilica’s Flickr page. Only one post per person is allowed. The winner’s picture will be displayed at the epic opening, and officially announced.
