GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 27th February at noon SLT: Do we live in a Virtual World?

Second Life is a virtual world but is Real Life also a virtual world?  Do our real-life selves live in a simulated universe?  How can we know if that is so?

According to the Bostrom argument, there are likely to be many more simulated universes than real universes so, statistically speaking, it is more likely that we live in a simulated universe.

Could we be conscious in a simulated universe, like the Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager or Vic Fontaine in ST: Deep Space Nine?  The Doctor is a simulation who lives in the real world, Vic Fontaine is a simulation that lives in the holodeck.  Both are apparently conscious.

Is there a real-world outside of our world?  Could we live there?

Come and find out if you are real or not and if it matters.  Bring all your real, imagined and virtual friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

FASHION & MUSIC WORLD TOUR - TUESDAY 7 PM

Join us for music, fashion, and dance at Latin Quarter SL.

LQ SL was developed to pay homage to the original Latin Quarter in NYC.LQ  NYC wasn't just a Latin club. It offered a variety of music which brought the NYC vibe to nightclub life.

Blueyes Bonetto and RαιɳMαƙҽɾ Cσɾƚҽʂ, the owners of LQ grew up in NYC, where they were exposed to a broad spectrum of music. Both, being of Latino descent,  grew up with some of the pinnacle musicians that influenced both Latin and American music. This inspired them to create LQ SL. They knew each other in RL for many years and wanted to create a place that would bring their roots into SL. With the image of the original LQ in mind, they hope to build not just a club, but a community to bring people together. It's a place to enjoy the music of all musical genres.  Recently, they expanded by opening LQ by the beach, a venue where you can come and enjoy a romantic evening with someone or a place to get away from the high energy of the main club.

Latin Quarter SL is the ONLY dual-venue club in SL with two live DJs playing simultaneously in 2 different sides of the club.  "We see patrons as people and not traffic!" We try to engage and interact with everyone who comes to the club individually. Even if its a simple IM saying hello or sparking a 30 min conversation getting to know them and their experience. We try to make it personal because our goal is to create this community where we can enjoy a thriving atmosphere with good music and people.

LQ SL owners described their desire to work with LUXE Paris Fashion and One On One because the club scene at times really is a untold fashion show. People usually wear their best outfits for a night out... representing latest trends. Having the ability to expose that trend in a club, shows the hard work of the Fashion industry as they create. Lets not forget the devotion and professionalism of the models either. They're just as important in inspiring club patrons to an experience they never had before.

LUXE Paris & ONE On ONE Agency are launching their Fashion & Music World Tour TUESDAY NIGHT, February 23th,  at 7 PM SLT at the LATIN QUARTER! At the heart of this super nightclub, the top models of ONE On ONE agency will rock the dance floor with a fashion mini-show in harmony with DJs REX and CRMARIEL! Starring: LUXE Paris creations as well as the magnificent hair of L'ÊTRE DOUX! Experience an evening of music and dance!

SPOTLIGHT ON DREAM ISLAND - A LITTLE GEM OF A PLACE FOR ALL YOU SAILORS AND AIRPLANE LOVERS - ROXY MYSTIC REPORTING

I read somewhere that sailboats symbolize journey and adventure and they are also associated with being carried along by the “breath of life”. I think the same rings true for flying as well; to be able to pierce through the white cotton candy skies and feel free. Second Life makes all these exciting dreams come true. For a short while, you can be the Captain of your ship or plane and enjoy fun adventures.  Since waterways in SL have no ban lines, the Blake Sea is a paradise for sailing and also for flying. Finding a perfect place to drop and sail in this case fly as well can be challenging and expensive at times.

I was very thrilled to explore Dream Island which is accessible to the Blake Sea and meet with the owner DJ Don. At first glance you can see the owner is very proud of his opulent seaside community, the added details did not go unnoticed such as gas pumps for the boats, a marina, beach areas, a club, apartments, cottages, and a large airport! My eyes were very busy scanning the whole area. Dream Island is also associated with GTFO, (Get The Freight Out) which is a hud based game in Second Life for people who enjoy traveling around the grid in planes, boats, trucks, trains, helicopters, and more.

Roxy Mystic: Hi Don, it is a pleasure to meet with you to discuss this little gem of a place you have here! I will admit I love sailing so seeing all of this makes me smile. Can you please tell me about your little slice of paradise?

DJ Don: Hello Roxy, above us is the airport, the club here is located on the west marina and there is an east side channel with cottages. The airport is GTFO available and then I have the apartments overlooking the ocean and airport. I am renting plane tie downs, hangers, apartments, cottages, houseboats, underwater homes and boat slips. All apartments and cottages come with locking doors. I have 3 main rules: no ban lines, no orbs, and nothing built above the home. I have a few places rented and I am happy to say that planes and choppers are flying in and out all day.

Roxy Mystic: You are such a busy man Don and if all that was not enough I understand you are also a DJ? I really like that you made the Dream Island Rocker Club open like this so people can sit here, party, and still see passing boats and the ocean. Tell me a bit about yourself and how Dream Island became your passion.

DJ Don: I had a place on the mainland, rented apartments and I never knew you could fly or boat in here. When I found out, I had to have my own. I was looking for land for an airport and a marina then I found a small section of an airport area which was abandoned so I purchased it from linden. I started building a small airport then slowly 1 by 1 more property became available and I bought it up. I have many boats, ships, and aircraft. It's fun! As for DJing, I've been doing it in RLC for 10 years so I am looking forward to getting known here.

Roxy Mystic:  I did look at your rental fees and to be honest they are very affordable. A cottage that size with a place to dock your boat too for only 349L is quite amazing. And you have boat houses for rent as well. But what got my attention is the underwater home! It's not for mermaids, it's actually a home that is underwater! So this is really like a small village for all the plane and boat enthusiasts! So why are your prices so amazingly low?

DJ Don:  I have checked prices around and I'm trying to keep them about the same or lower, in most cases, they are lower. People can use my furniture or theirs. I have rez zones at both the airport and marina where people can rez and it's a safe zone so their aircraft or boats will not delete while they are here.  I hope to build a nice community here.

Roxy Mystic: I guess based on the name of the club, it's not hard to guess that you are a rocker Don! Talk to me about the Dream Island Rock Club and what are your plans here.

DJ Don: Yes, Classic Rock, my live stream plays here and it streams in 137 countries. I am live of course when I have an event. We may be looking for DJs and hosts in the future too.  I am hoping to be here at the Dream Island Rock Club every Friday.

Roxy Mystic: I noticed you have stores here as well. Do you have more storage space available in case someone wishes to rent here?

DJ Don: Yes, stores are for rent too. I have affiliate clothes in them now but more can be made available.

Roxy Mystic:  I get the impression you are a very flexible person if someone wants to do something they can discuss it with you?

DJ Don:  Yes, like the plane hangers, there were 3 there and one renter wanted something bigger so I removed 2 of them and built him an area. He fell in love with it and I even put a name on it for him. I get good feedback from visitors. I also rented 2 plane parking areas 2 days ago to a girl and she was so excited she found this place, she loves it!

Roxy Mystic: So you run this whole place on your own? You are basically the mayor, police, air traffic control, and also entertainer!

DJ Don: Yes, I have a friend (Willow) known her for 12 years from RLC and she is around to help people when I'm not available.

Roxy Mystic: If I was to ask you Don what do you like the most here and no cheating you can only pick one! Sailing, Flying, DJing, or something else?

DJ Don:  OMG! Really I got to choose one? I guess flying but building all this is great fun.

At the end of the interview, Don offered me a nice helicopter ride. It was my first time up in the air and I truly enjoyed flying around and getting a good view of the area. DJ Don is a very friendly person with a good heart, I can tell he is very passionate about Dream Island. If you have any boating or aviation questions I am sure Don will be happy to assist you. In the meantime, I recommend you visit Dream Island and explore this quaint seaside community and perhaps make it your home!

LIVE at Terry's Sunday Showcase - Saramarie Philly & Bat Masters/Ed Lowell February 21st 2021

Join us on Sunday, February 21st beginning at 2pm SLT for Terry's Sunday Showcase, sponsored by the SL Enquirer! This week's featured artist is the lovely SaraMarie Philly...SaraMarie is a music graduate pianist/vocalist who plays a very wide variety of genres. It is not uncommon to hear her perform the #1 song on the Top 40 but then sing a classical opera song causing jaws to drop. Many say she is one of, if not THE best vocalist in SL.

In her original music, Saramarie just writes what comes to her heart, regardless of what genre it sounds like. She chooses cover songs that have special meaning for her within the lyrics or that connect with her in a musical way.

Saramarie doesn't really like being pigeon-holed into one genre, which means that at this point in her life she performs a very wide range of musical styles from Classical Opera to R&B, and loves that SL allows her to do that. Her audiences sure seem to like the variation!
Following Saramarie, debuting this week at 3pm SLT in what's sure to be a spectacular DUAL stream performance will be Bat Masters and Edward Lowell!  Bat feels awkward writing about himself in the 3rd person and is from Sugartit, KY which is totally true. He plays guitar and bass and sings but not all at the same time. Bat makes his SL shows fun, like we're all just sitting on the porch singing together. Bat loves Americana and true country as well as rock and even a dash of hip hop.

Bat has been a part of the SL music community since February of 2011. His SL shows usually consist of general silliness and acoustic guitar. Bat is an avid relay streamer as well and can sometimes be found playing bass and singing behind other artists like Beth Odets, Twostep Spiritweaver and more.

Joining Bat for his debut is Edward Lowell, known as “The Lyrical Bard”, one of the first to enter the scene as a Second Life musician. Few have the talent to master both strings and wood instruments, but anyone following his events has heard the flute, mandolin and twelve-string guitar.  Ed’s fans will tell you his flute playing tugs at the heart and his love ballads bring a tear to your eye. His unique style of charm and wit is sure to entertain you

Come support live music with friends, laughter, and a whole lot of fun...ONLY at Terry's Place!!!

GeekSpeak – Subject for Saturday 20th February at noon SLT: Climate change! Are we all going to die?

Are you worried about climate change?  Or do you think the danger has been exaggerated?  Or maybe that it is all a hoax?

If we assume that it is real then some very serious changes are going to hit the earth.  Some places will become much warmer, some much colder.  There will be severe rains where deserts used to be and drought in formerly wet countries.  How will the world cope with that?  How many will die?

Will countries be able to work together to host millions of climate refugees?  Will some countries become completely uninhabitable, unless you can live under kilometres of ice or at the bottom of the sea?

Will undersea cities perhaps be the answer.  Or sky cities?  Or should we all move into space?  Turn on the doom scenario in your mind and show it to us!  Bring your friends.

Rare Disease Day event in Second Life on Sunday February 28 th, 2021

Upcoming event on February 28th,  2021: Rare Disease Day in Second Life

Raising funds and raising awareness for rare diseases!

By Wesley Regenbogen in Second Life

Rare Disease Day 2021 in Second Life:

Rare Disease Day is a yearly awareness campaign in real life that is held on the last day of February each year.

Now, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I will recreate this event in Second Life.

On Sunday, February 28th,  2021  from midnight SLT until Monday, March 1st, 2021 midnight SLT, we will have live artists and DJs playing live on our venue

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tainted%20Island/156/206/2004

What is Rare Disease Day?  https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives.

The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policymakers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals, and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases.

Why is Rare Disease Day held each year? https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day

Building awareness of rare diseases is so important because 1 in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life. Despite this, there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and many go undiagnosed. Rare Disease Day improves knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision-makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases.

Key figures about rare diseases:  https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-a-rare-disease

There are over 300 million people living with one or more of over 6,000 identified rare diseases around the world1, each supported by family, friends, and a team of carers that make up the rare disease community.

Each rare disease may only affect a handful of people, scattered around the world, but taken together the number of people directly affected is equivalent to the population of the world’s third-largest country.

Rare diseases currently affect 3.5% - 5.9% of the worldwide population.

72% of rare diseases are genetic whilst others are the result of infections (bacterial or viral), allergies, and environmental causes, or are degenerative and proliferative.

70% of those genetic rare diseases start in childhood.

A disease defined as rare in Europe when it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people.

Characteristics of rare diseases

Over 6000 rare diseases are characterized by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatment. Quintessentially disabling, the patient's quality of life is affected by the lack or loss of autonomy due to the chronic, progressive, degenerative, and frequently life-threatening aspects of the disease.

The fact that there are often no existing effective cures adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families.

Common challenges

The lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on the disease often results in a delay in diagnosis. Also, the need for appropriate quality health care engenders inequalities and difficulties in access to treatment and care. This often results in heavy social and financial burdens on patients.

As mentioned, due to the broad diversity of disorders and relatively common symptoms which can hide underlying rare diseases, initial misdiagnosis is common. In addition, symptoms differ not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

Due to the rarity and diversity of rare diseases, research needs to be international to ensure that experts, researchers, and clinicians are connected, that clinical trials are multinational, and that patients can benefit from the pooling of resources across borders. Initiatives such as the European Reference Networks (networks of centers of expertise and healthcare providers that facilitate cross-border research and healthcare), the International Rare Disease Research Consortium, and the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 support international, connected research.

How can Rare Disease Day make a difference?

Rare Disease Day raises awareness for the 300 million people living with the rare disease around the world and their families and carers.

The long-term cause of the Rare Disease Day campaign is to achieve equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, health and social care, and social opportunity for people affected by a rare disease.

Important progress continues to be made with joint international advocacy efforts for universal health coverage (UHC), part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to advocate for equitable health systems that meet the needs of people affected by rare diseases in order to leave no one behind.

Rare Disease Day is the opportunity to advocate for rare diseases as a human rights priority at local, national, and international levels as we work towards a more inclusive society.

Rare Disease Day is a great example of how progress continues to be made, with events being held worldwide each year. Beginning in 2008, when events took place in just 18 countries, Rare Disease Day has taken place every year since with events being held in over 100 countries in 2019.

We hope to see you at our event for Rare Disease Day in Second Life on Sunday, February 28th,  2021!
