HOLIDAY MASCOT SERIES: Interview with Father Time- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Time sure does fly when you are havin fun, But it also does the same sitting on your ass planning your next move.

Looking back at the past year. It has been one hellified journey for me. Between family matters, friendship matters, work life, SL life and all the fuckery in between.  I’m exhausted. Time has a way of coming at us in waves. There’s ups and downs, back and forth and at the end of it all, we are left thinking WTF happened to the year! It’s now the end of January and I’m wondering what surprises are to come. The good, the bad and yessss… even the ugly.

For the most part, I try to keep my nose clean. I work, pay my bills, feed my cat and keep keepin’ on with my day to day stuff. If I told you what I really was up to yall would collectively do a citizen's arrest and have me committed to a place that would protect me from myself.

Anyway, When the world begins to feel like I can’t possibly do anything else shameless, I turn to Second life and whip out my pen and begin to write.

There’s nothing like bringing fantasy to life and reminding myself a good laugh is needed to balance things out. In the thick of things time is the most valuable thing we all have. It can’t be bought for any amount of money. There are no do overs, a rewind button or even a pause so what we do in the here and now should make us happy.

With that said, I set out to find Father time in Second Life. He tried to avoid me because it seems he doesn’t have the time for my Holiday Mascot Interviews. I heard from a friend of a friend that he thinks I’m a time waster. I was relentless until he finally gave in and decided to  sit down with me at a train station.

Interview with father time

Lanai: Hey Big Daddy, Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. It’s been a while. I think the last time we spoke I was about to make the craziest decision of my life until I got a flat tire and lost my debit card.

Father Time: Lanai, Ugh your nicknames are just… extra.  Of all the people I have met through the years, you stand out to me as the biggest pain in the ass but for some reason you find my weak spot.  You are a good kid when you are sleeping but a complete disaster the moment you wake up. I can write a whole series of history books just on you alone. SO what is it you wanted to interview me about?

Lanai: Well dang, tell me how you really feel.. No need to be a Scrooge.

Father Time: Hey watch your tone young lady and leave the Scrooge out of this. I cannot believe the prank you pulled on him this December. If I was him, I’d ban you from Christmas altogether but that's not my holiday to decide so I’ll leave that to him and Santa. I heard about what you did to him too.

Lanai: I didn't do anything to Scrooge. It was just  a glitter bomb. I thought it would brighten his day.

Father Time: Just a Glitter Bomb? Lanai ,has anyone ever told you to read the room before the things you do? Poor Scrooge had to hire a team of professionals to remove all that glitter from his entire neighborhood. They are still working on it and the bill is getting enormous.

Lanai: *blinks* Who doesn’t like glitter?

Father Time: *Sighs* Anyway, so what do you want with me? I was almost afraid to decline your interview offer when you found me trying to hop on a train to visit an old friend in the North pole.

Lanai: I just wanted to say hi and just get some of your wise insight about aging and what to expect next as I lean towards 50.

Father Time: 50? Are you kidding me? You are still a baby in my eyes. You still have about 3 years left. The only advice I can offer is start to stock up on butterscotch candy, get a few cats and learn to knit. Hell I don’t know what you almost half a century beings do with your time. For you specifically, word on the street is you still act like you are a defiant teenager going around stirring things up. I recently went to a holiday mascot support group and we spent an hour and a half discussing you. The mediator suggested we change holiday dates just to avoid you.

Lanai: You are such a drama queen. You make me out to be some kind of menace to SL society when I’ve been laying low these days. I’m finally coming around again and you wanna be all mean.

Father Time: Ok , you are wasting my time right now. I got a train to catch. What is this interview really about?

Lanai: Well, nothing really. I just wanted to prove to myself that Father time still has a little time for me. So thank you for that.

Father Time: You’re welcome… I think?

Lanai: Can you do me one small favor and I promise I won't bother you again for another year?

Father Time: What’s that?

Lanai: Can you tell Cupid he's next for an interview the next time you are at one of those weird holiday mascot support groups?

Father Time: Not sure that will go over well since he was appointed the mediator after that stunt you pulled on him last Valentine’s day. He is still pulling thorns out of hard to reach places. You had no business trespassing in Cupid’s Garden. Listen, I gotta go before I miss this train!

Lanai: o.O.  But wait! Let me defend myself. That sooooo wasn’t my fault, He startled me while I was attempting to pick roses.

Father Time: AHHHHHHHH!  I missed the train!  Lanai once again you managed to make me late!

Lanai: Don't’ worry the next train is coming soon. Thank you for your time. Gotta go!

Happy Belated New year All!

Interview with Cupid Coming February 14th!

ANGELS ON EARTH: SELENE SKYFALL, SL ENQUIRER OPEN MIC WINNER FOR JANUARY 2025: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

In keeping with our reputation as a showcase for some of SLs Finest Vocal Talents, SL Enquirer continues to sponsor a monthly Open Mic Competition for Singers and Songwriters.  Many of our winners play both in SL and in a variety of RL Venues.  While the competition here has always been especially keen, this month’s winner is Selene Skyfall.  Pleasant memories of her lovely voice will stay with you, long after the concert has ended, the lights have been turned out, and the guests and performers have all gone. I was fortunate enough to catch up with Selene a few days after her win, and asked her a few questions about her experiences as a performer and her passion for music.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):     So Selene,  Congratulations on your win.  It was well deserved.   Thanks you for agreeing to chat with me.  To begin with, how long have you been performing your music, and at what sorts of venues?

Selene Skyfall (SS):     I've been performing in Second Life over the last year and a half, although I used to perform years ago under the name Willow Hillburton, but didn't get too active before my computer at the time died out. But now, I've done shows at Amusement Parks, Clubs, of the spicy and non-spicy nature, Motorcycle sims, Seasonal festivals, Charity events, Acoustic joints, and more!

JB:     Who were your music idols, and those who most influenced your musical style?

SS:     Elvis was a big influence in my love for music as I grew up watching him with my dad. It's hard to pick only a few influences because my love for music spans across multiple genres and decades. Ones that come to mind, but may not if you asked me in a month, are Julie London, Monica, Adele, Kings of Leon, and Muse. A bit of an eclectic group and I'll kick myself tomorrow when I think of others.

JB:     What was the inspiration for the song you sang at the contest, and why did you choose that particular song?

SS:     For my original song I sang one that I wrote about 3 weeks ago called "Bittersweet". It's about knowing you shouldn't be with someone and ultimately deciding not to be, but mourning the loss of the ideas you had about what your life would be like. I chose to sing it because I felt that it was something that people can relate to and the feelings I had while writing it were still fresh on my mind. Sometimes that raw emotion makes for the best performance.

JB:     How would you describe the brand that you now represent? To really stand out in the SL Music scene, you have to have something special about your performances. How do you define your music style?

SS:     That's a hard one to describe to be honest. I like so many genres and write all kinds of music. Currently, the genres I cover include, but aren't limited to: Alt. Rock, Blues, Country, Folk, Indie Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rock, & R&B. It allows me to be super flexible to the type of show a venue or I want to put on. In February I'm doing an all Jazz set. I've done sets that were more on the seductive side, 90s (I love the 90s) focused sets, all acoustic sets, etc.  Maybe my brand is that I'm flexible? Oo la la!

JB:     What are your landmark performances?  Best Memories performing both in RL and in SL?

SS:     In real life, I've done some contests, sang in front of a few hundred people for some of them, did the American Idol and Voice thing a few times, but nothing stands out to me as much as playing Sister Hubert in the comedy musical "Nunsense" in High School and singing this boisterous solo "Holier Than Though". I received a standing ovation from my peers and then again from their parents and friends at the public showing and it really gave me the confidence boost I needed to start focusing more on singing and writing.

In Second Life, it's a tie between performing at Pixel Live's Autumn Fest as a fill in. It came out of nowhere and the vibe was just great and I remember really feeling like, "Wow, that was awesome, I feel excited about that performance." And then the first set I did at Boogeyman's really stands out to me. Grace Loudon had more faith in me than I did. About a month before my set, she basically said, "Hey, I like your voice, do you play instruments?" At that time I hadn't played in 2 years, I was only using tracks for sets. She told me I had a month to prepare. Haha. She really motivated me and I play a lot of guitar and Ukulele now at my sets thanks to Grace!

JB:     How did you take the news when they first announced your name as the winner?

SS:     I was super jazzed! I've heard so many great singers in Second Life and I was honored that I was chosen that day. I encourage others to check out the coming months' contests. Kaysie, Ninja, and Wolfie are so kind and encouraging and we all had such a fun time!

JB:     What does it take to be a successful musician these days?

SS:     *Points to myself, then looks behind me to see if you're talking to someone else* "Who? Me?"

In all seriousness, I don't know how one should measure success and I try not to dwell on it. I just like singing and playing music. That's why I do it. Maybe that's what it takes. Not losing the joy you have for it.

JB:     What advice could you give to someone who wants to be a songwriter?

SS:     You're going to write songs that in the moment feel like the greatest thing you've ever written and then you'll play them one day and feel like it's not very good or like it's "generic". Sometimes that happens. other times you'll have a song that you are proud of and each time you sing it you feel like you're breathing new life into it. I think the most important part about songwriting is just to do it. You won't always feel like you're even writing something worthwhile, but you're writing. You're keeping that practice. It helps you learn so much. Sometimes I keep with writing something terrible just to know what I *don't* like.

JB:     Do you have any social media sites that folks can visit to see more of you and your work?

SS:     Yes, I have a few:

JB:     Do you post your performance schedule for anyone who wants to catch one or more of your gigs?

SS:     Yes, besides posting my shows in my Discord and the other links above, I have a google Calendar that displays them:

·         https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=7fa688572214fd199de6952918617252be3c23158b9371232697fec9d9a02dbb%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FNew_York

For any bookings, please reach out to BĄĐ  SƐƬȠƐŔ (badone).

JB:     Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Enquirer Readers?

SS:     I am a fiend for new music and take requests. So. if you ever have a song that isn't on my list and you'd like to hear it at a future show, please let me know. Or even if you just have an artist you think I'd like. I'm a sucker for perving profiles for music links. Haha I want *ALL* the music!

Currently, these are the songs I have prepared, but I'm always updating:

So, there you have it Folks.  Direct from the source.  Let me encourage each of you next time this lovely lady performs…Take a break from your shopping….Take a break from your building…Take a break from entertaining your Shoogah Boogah …or whatever other reason you reside here and come see Selene Skyfall, Live and in Concert.   You can even bring your Shoogah Boogah with you.  They will thank you for it.  And when you do, tell ‘em Josh sent ya.

You’ll be glad ya did.

VOCALIST MIMI CARPENTER: ENCHANTING SL LISTENERS FOR 15 YEARS. – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

Mimi Carpenter is a musician originally from France and now based in Toronto, Canada. Singing and playing guitar for over 15 years, she combines her performances with live looping and hopes to reintroduce piano into her repertoire soon. Mimi performs in multiple languages, including English, French, German, and eight others, sharing her eclectic style on platforms like Second Life and Twitch, where she’s built a global community of music lovers.  I had the very real pleasure of catching Mimi at a recent concert, and stayed around afterward to ask her a few questions, a request to which she most graciously agreed.  What follows is her story.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) (JB):     So tell us, Mimi. How long have you been performing your music, and in what types of venues?

Mimi Carpenter (MC):     I started singing and playing guitar for an audience thanks to Second Life. It's been more than 15 years...

Interestingly, I began as a DJ at a French club called the W1ldstyle on the sim Area 51, which sadly doesn’t exist anymore. Spinning 90s and 2000s tracks weekly was a blast, and I’d occasionally sing along or between songs. The positive feedback gave me the push to try performing live.

I’ll never forget my first show: it was on a neighboring sim, and the venue was full. Do you remember when you’d sometimes have to wait for a spot to enter your own event? Performing in SL gave me the courage to explore real-life open mics while I was living in Germany. It was nerve-wracking at first, but an incredibly kind host helped me ease into it. Since then, I’ve played open mics regularly, done small local gigs, and discovered my love for busking. Singing on the street has an unmatched mix of fear, freedom, and joy.

JB:     What is your favorite musical genre?

MC:     I’m pretty eclectic. My repertoire includes over 1,000 songs in 10 languages, spanning acoustic folk, Britpop, 90s hits, French chanson, and more. Even my originals differ quite a bit in style. One day, I’d love to explore EDM and trip-hop projects.

Growing up, I was exposed to country music, French chansons, and world music through my parents. Music was always present in our home or car, and we sang along together all the time.

JB:     I know you enjoy a significant following in SL. Do you perform in RL as well?

MC:     I do perform in RL, though not as much as I’d like since Covid. I’ve played at open mics, busked on the streets, and even joined SL Jam meetups and private events like birthdays, weddings or community gatherings. I especially love intimate settings like living room concerts or small coffee shops, they create such a special connection with the audience.

These days, Twitch has become my main stage, giving me the chance to interact with people live from all over the world. It feels like hosting a cozy living room concert but with a global audience. That said, I’d love to get back to RL performances soon.

(Image byMaya Raynier)

JB:     You mentioned Twitch and I see it on your Profile, something I’ve not heard of before.  So tell us, please? What is Twitch, and how did that come about?

MC:     Twitch is a live-streaming platform where creators share their passions in real-time, from music and gaming to creative arts and more. I started streaming music there over 3.5 years ago during the second year of the pandemic, which helped me connect with people in new ways and grow my audience. It’s a bit like hosting a concert from my home, with people tuning in from around the world!

What makes Twitch so special is the real-time interaction. Viewers can request songs, chat, or just quietly enjoy the music while multitasking (we call it “lurking”). I’m close to 10,000 followers now, and streaming on Twitch has helped me grow musically, collaborate with other artists, and build an amazing global community.

JB:     What has been the most memorable performance of your career so far?

MC:     Performing at TwitchCon Paris in the summer of 2023 was unforgettable! Coming from my beginnings in SL, it was an honor to be selected. Forming a band with talented streamers from Switzerland and the U.S. that I had never met in person was an incredible challenge—musically and personally. We performed with harmonies, harp, piano, and guitar: it was quite a special experience.

Another highlight was being featured on the Twitch front page, where 15,000 viewers tuned in! It felt like playing in a stadium but from home.

(Mimi live at Bryn Oh's Skyfisher by Ryse Rizzler)

JB:     Who were your musical idols, and who have been the greatest influences on your style?

MC:     It's hard to mention just a few, there are many. The Cranberries and Stereophonics have been huge inspirations. I was lucky to see both live: The Cranberries in Berlin, just a year before Dolores O’Riordan passed away. It was an unforgettable, intimate concert.

Jean-Jacques Goldman is a major influence. He’s written over 300 timeless songs for himself and others, including Céline Dion, a true legend in French music. Collaborating with him would be a dream.

JB:     What has been your biggest challenge breaking into the music industry?

MC:     Learning to stay authentic in an industry often focused on fitting people into specific boxes can be challenging, but it's also helped me form a unique connection with my audience. Starting on Second Life taught me to connect with people beyond traditional paths, and that’s a skill I continue to rely on today.

I’ve learned to embrace my eclectic style, which helps me connect with a wonderfully diverse audience. It’s a journey, and recording my own songs is my next big goal. I know many of you have asked about this, and I’m excited to make it happen eventually. Stay tuned, there's more to come.

(Mimi live at Dreamfest by Spence Wilder)

JB:     So tell us, Mimi? What advice would you give to aspiring musicians today?

MC:     Be true to yourself and embrace what makes you unique. Collaborate, ask questions, and learn from others. There are so many people out there who want to help and connect. Stay curious and consistent. Even small, steady progress can lead to big breakthroughs. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to start. Take the leap and let things unfold naturally. Music is universal, and versatility can be a huge strength. Performing in different languages and styles has helped me forge incredible connections. Above all, enjoy the journey: it’s the people you meet along the way who make it magical.

JB:     Where can SL readers hear you live?

MC:     I perform every week in Second Life and stream on Twitch. You can find me by searching 'Mimi' in the Live Music category under SL Events. There's even a button to set a reminder.

To stay updated you can:

(Mimi live at semicolon by Maya Raynier)

JB:     Anything else you'd like to share with our SL Enquirer readers?

MC:     I might attend the SL Toronto Music Jam in late May, so come and jam if you're going.

I’d say Twitch makes live music incredibly accessible, whether you’re active in the chat or just enjoying the tunes while working in the background, which I do often myself. These small moments of connection are what make streaming such a rewarding experience for me.

Feel free to reach out if you’d like to collaborate or just share your thoughts. I love meeting people from all walks of life. Thank you, SL Enquirer, for this feature and to everyone reading it!

So there you have it, Folks.   From her mouth to our paper, to your minds.  If you truly love music and especially LIVE music, you simply HAVE to go catch one of Mimi’s events.  Her unique blend of musical styles, lilting voice, and rock-star delivery will have you begging for more.  Check out her calendar above and catch a show soonest.  And when you go there, tell ‘em Josh sent ya.  You’ll be glad you did

Be There! Aloha!!

LIVING THE DREAM AT DREAM SEEKER ESTATES: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

SecondLife is a phenomenal Virtual World where thousands of people all over the world have made their second home.  A great many of those residents buy or rent properties here and create their virtual “Dream Residence”.  Traditionally, the process involves laborious searches, hopping from sim to sim and plot to plot, looking for the PERFECT place to build.  Once they find the perfect plot of land, they can spend weeks and thousands of Lindens more on terraforming, landscaping and building the ideal vacation property.

Enter Dream Seeker Estates – an entirely different approach to property management.  To help describe exactly HOW different they are, I have invited Dream Seeker Estate Owner/CEO Zeebster Colasanti and General Manager Zani Fiertze to help explain exactly how Dream Seeker Estates is truly unique among property Management firms.

Tired of all the hassle of acquiring property here?  Let Dream Seeker Estates show you a whole new approach and a truly “Turn Key” method to owning the property of your dreams

Josh (Thpmas1 Bellic) JB:     So, tell us, Zeebster?  Just how does Dream Seeker Estates differ from the dozens and possibly hundreds of other Property Management sites out there?

Zeebster Colasanti (ZC): We believe that in Second Life commerce trust can be the highest differentiator between private Property Management businesses.  In this industry customers always prepay for their service, usually for just a week but sometimes for several weeks at a time and trust that they will not lose their investment because of deceit or incompetence of the service provider.  We believe that if we collect money from our customers and expect them to trust us, they should know who we are.  To that end, we are possibly the only private estate Property Management business in Second Life that proudly lists its legal corporation name and province of incorporation on our website for anyone to see.  I believe we our unique in this industry in feeling proud enough of who we are and how we operate to share our legal name.

JB:     You guys have been around for some time, correct?

ZC:     Yes, that’s right.  We started our operations in 2007 so in a couple of years we will be celebrating our 20 years in operations.  Over the years we have seen many private estates come and go, gained wealth of experience and developed our own IT infrastructure and processes to ensure consistantly professional and efficient delivery of our service.

JB:     How big a staff does it take to run Dream Seeker Estates?

ZC:     We presently have 12 staff members and are looking to hire two more in the near term.  We have some newer members on our team but roughly half of our staff that makes up the core of our team have been with the company now for over 10 years, with some going back as far as 15 years.  We must be doing something right, as a team and as a company, to have so many of our staff stand by our brand for so many years.

JB:     How many properties are you actively managing at this time?

ZC:     We presently have over 1,000 regions leased directly from Linden Lab which makes us the second largest tier 1 private Property Management company in Second Life.  Like all our peers, we provide services both directly to the retail market and also to a handful of tier 2 Property Management companies that prefer to source their regions from us rather than from Linden Lab.

JB:     Sooo… You don’t just sell flat parcels of Land, but they may actually come already terraformed and such?

Zani Fiertze (ZF):     Yes, that's right! We don’t just offer flat parcels of land – many of our regions are thoughtfully terraformed and landscaped, making them not only easier to develop but also more exciting to build on right from the start. Whether it's sandy shores, lush grass, mixed textures, or even mountains that separate parcels in some areas or water features in others, there's something unique to suit every vision. And if you need help with terraforming your parcel, our customer care team is always available to assist. For residents who rent entire regions, we even offer fully designed themes to choose from. Simply let our customer care team or sales agent know which theme you’d like, and we’ll handle the rest.

JB:     I understand you have parcels in different Regions for sale?  Tell me about some of these different regions, and what the focus is there?

ZF:     Yes, we offer parcels in a variety of regions, divided across several estates or region types. Each estate has its own characteristics and focus. Here's a brief overview of some regions we currently have available:

Dream Waters Edge:  As one of our Neighborhood Regions, Dream Waters Edge offers a beautifully landscaped environment with a charming neighborhood feel, complete with tree-lined streets, streetlights, and even white picket fences. Residents can enjoy a passive park, perfect for relaxing or watching children at play, or sit on one of the benches along the pier to take in the ocean views and soothing sounds. For those looking to explore, our bike rezzer allows them to enjoy a peaceful ride around the region. Additionally, residents love experiencing the changing seasons, not only in Dream Waters Edge but throughout the other regions in our Neighborhood Regions estate.

Cyrene is one of our Homestead Community residential regions, offering smaller parcels of land. While the parcels are smaller, they don’t lack on prims and provide plenty of space between each, ensuring residents never feel crowded. Cyrene offers a serene and picturesque environment, creating an ideal setting for those seeking a tranquil place to call home.

Petopia is one of our Farm Community regions designed for residents who enjoy owning breedable pets and engaging in breedable-specific commerce. This unique type of region offers a perfect blend of residential living and opportunities for those who enjoy raising and caring for breedable pets, all within a supportive and like-minded community.

We offer a wide range of options to fit the needs and visions of all Second Life residents. Whether they are looking for a peaceful nature retreat or a commercial space to grow, Dream Seeker Estates has something for everyone.

JB:     What about clients from non-English speaking countries?  How do you communicate with them?

ZF:     We know how important clear communication is, especially for our residents who speak languages other than English. That’s why we’re committed to making sure everyone has a smooth and positive experience during the purchasing process. To help with this, we have team members who can assist in several languages, including Dutch, German, and Spanish. Plus, we use translation tools like Google Translate and other services to ensure we can communicate effectively, no matter the language. Our goal is to make the entire process as easy and seamless as possible for everyone, no matter where they are from or what language they speak. We take pride in offering a personalized, supportive experience that truly meets the needs of every resident in Second Life.
