Seven Years and Still Running: London City Celebrates its 7th Anniversary All September By Lilya Luv

London City’s 7th anniversary celebrations all this month

London City is celebrating its 7th anniversary this month with events every day. As one of the longest running and popular communities, London City is mainstay in Second Life. Just under a year ago London City collaborated with Linden Lab to launch London City Gateway as a way for newbies to learn the ropes. We speak with Torric Rodas, founder of London City, about the community, why he thinks London City is an attraction in Second Life, and we find out the weirdest thing that happened to him.

What do you enjoy most about the London City community?

Diversity. The huge variety of different people popping through every day. London City receives about 3,000 unique visitors each day, all with different perspectives on life.

What do you think it is about London City that attracts people?

The estate hopefully covers most bases of a self contained city. It has over a hundred stores all in London Streets. Five clubs for different lifestyles including a dedicated LGBT venue, Madame Lala's. We also have a large hangout area, a comprehensive freebie shop, a park, residential regions, and a landscaped region--many people live and work here.

In December 2015 London City Gateway opened. It is an official Community Gateway run under the guidance of Linden Lab and welcomes many hundreds of brand new users each and every day.

What are some weird things you have seen happen here over the years or while you were a moderator?

All sorts every day. Someone landed a 40 meter zeppelin next to me as I am writing this.

What would you recommend newbies do when they come to London City?

We encourage new users to begin with the New User Tutorial in the London City Gateway first.  It has a basic walk-through tutorial, where at the end they can elect to either enter the community immediately, or take a left turn and go on to the more in depth lessons. Once in London City, there is a huge freebie store for those who want to customize their look, or they can hang out and make friends in the hub area.

You can take a ride in London City’s double-decker bus

What are some upcoming events related to the 7-year celebration?

Events are run 7 days a week, with a weekend concert every Saturday at 12:00PM SLT.

For example, more recently we had a very tongue in cheek tribute to Televangelism with a full show starring Vestal Virgin. On Saturday September 17, we will have a special party on the mainland region, Mephilo Tor. There is a small parcel there that we still own. It is where we first started London City, but we ran out of room within 6 months and moved to private islands.

We have a tribute act every Saturday produced and choreographed  by our own team, The London Players.

Is there anything else you would like to say about the London City community?

We recognise the differences that exist between people beyond age and experience, such as gender, race, ethnicity, mental and physical ability, creed, colour, caste, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, education, marital, financial and other statuses.  We believe that the differences and varied perspectives of life that people bring with them, has a positive impact on the community and is a strength to be embraced.

And on a personal note, I would like to thank the cast and crew of London City, the admins, support agents, merchants, visitors and our patrons. Without them, London City would never have become the most popular destination in Second Life.

Let’s Take a Tour through London City- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Stretched over 1500 kilo meters with over 8 million population London, the Capital of England is set over River Thames in real life. The London City at Second Life has tried to bring a small part of London’s favorite attractions for its residents. Torric Rodas and Billy Arentire have tried their best to bring and relive London in Second Life. A community in itself, London City is one of the most favoured destinations in Second Life. With total traffic over 78,846; over thousands of residents visit the place every day. There are residential properties and commercial complexes which attract people from all over the world.

When we teleport, we first enter the Soho and Regent Park which overlooks a circular public meeting area surrounded by the megastores. One such store is the freebie store which is a great attraction. Night clubs, pubs, music venues make the place a live even at night. It is a place for showbiz. As we walk along the paved pathway, we see the beautiful Big Ben, towering to the sky, a true replication of real life followed by the Tower Bridge on River Thames. While walking along, subconsciously, I sang the nursery rhyme, “London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady.”

It was in the evening, the sun was going down and a rainbow drew its colors across the skies. The shimmering, glistening water invited us to try boating along the river. Ironically, another nursery rhyme purged my thoughts, “Row your boat gently down the stream merrily life is but a dream.” Following the river, we crossed the bridge, entering the shopping society.

Shops ranging from clothes, skins, shapes, make ups, accessories etc. scored the area. Few main stores and few satellite shops with a total of 70 shops are located in the area. After a row of shops, residential apartments and complexes start. One may rent these apartments and houses or rent a parcel of land. The available properties with variable prices and prims to rent are available here http://mainlandlondon.blogspot.co.uk/p/rentals.html.

London City closely follows the real life events at London as they happen. The major attractions are The Crown Pub, Juiced Nightclub, Substation Nightclub, Worlds End Pub, Madame Lala’s London Revue Bar, Regents Park Hub, Regents Park Shopping Mall, Regents Park Freebie Megastore, Concert Area, Trafalgar Square Nelson’s Column and the Broadcasting Centre in the Soho and Regents Park area at London City. In North London City, various plots are available to Build Your Own Home, Churchill Arms Pub, Highgate Cemetery, The Boat Lake and The Litter Bin is located. In the West of London City, we can find the residential houses; park and picnic area and the unpacking area or the sandbox can be found.  The landmarks to these destinations can be viewed here http://mainlandlondon.blogspot.co.uk/p/mainland-london-destinations.html.
Among the above, newest attractions that have been added are the Broadcasting Centre, Litter Bins and the High Gate Cemetery. The litter bins amused me the most as they are spread across the area where people might throw away amazing things, sometimes even dump money. It is kind of fun to check these bins around the land.  To sum up, London City is a great place to meet and greet, have fun or event go hunting and shopping. Walk along the roads, row a boat or travel in tour buses to explore, visit or live here.

London City in SL Revisited- Tea Couturier Reporting...

After our recent visit to London City, SLE has returned again, this time Tea Couturier sat down with Billy Arrentire, Co-Owner & Operator of London City.
London is one of the fashion meccas in the world. However, it offers so much more than fashion. There are many popular tourist sites to see.
If you have never visited London, England, then you will be happy to know that in SL they have created a replica of London which not only looks similar but also has that London feel. Venues in SL can be very hard and expensive to run, as well as  update. Of course the time and effort spent to build up a location in SL,  is necessary in order to provide visitors with a fun experience. Fun experiences can lead to repeat visitors.  I was curious as to how such a busy and popular sim as London City, stays busy. I also wanted to know what keeps the owners motivated in SL. I decided to contact one of the owners Billy Arentire and ask him how London City in SL has stood the test of time and still one of SL top destination venues.

SL Newser:London City to celebrate 2012 Olympics- Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

Image retrieved from SL Newser
One of the more popular places in Second Life is London City area, which offers a number of events. And when the real London has a celebration, it's often reflected here, such as the Queen's Jubilee earlier in the year.

On Friday July 27, the 2012 Summer Olympics begin in the real life London. In London City, the place has been decorated with Olympic symbols, and a stage has been set up for Olympic themed events. The opening ceremonies will be covered live, and presumably live coverage will continue throughout the games to their closing on August 12.
