AND IT’S OFF TO THE RACES - ROYAL ASCOT STYLE: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC), REPORTING

The other day I was bouncing around the Grid, making sure it was in good working order and checking out some of my favorite haunts, when I got a note from my editor to check out “Royal Ascot”.  With No idea what to expect – Disco Club? Book Club? Wrestling Match?  I decided to hop on over.  I learned it was none of these.  While there I met the delightful Liz Wilner, the champion behind the Royal Ascot Build, and she graciously deigned to help me understand the Mission and vision of the RA Build, and I gotta tell you…it sounds like fun!

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) JB:    So tell me, Liz.  What is The Royal Ascot anyway?

Liz Wilner (LW): Royal Ascot is an annual horse racing event that takes place in June in England not far from Windsor Castle.  We try to stay true to as many elements of RL Ascot as we can, but we stage it in a more Victorian/Edwardian ambiance.  You will see ladies in their fancy hats, men in proper morning suits and top hats, a Royal Carriage ride that opens the event, the horse races themselves and a party to end the day.  There is a whole week of activities at the site including shops on the heath, entertainment, and the day before Royal Ascot Day, we have The Count’s Cup Races.  After all the racing, parties and fancy dress events are finished, we have an auction at the site where people can bid on the custom horses made for all the races.

JB:     What is your connection with Rosehaven?

LW:  Co-founder Oriella Charik and I have lived in the Realm of Rosehaven for fourteen years.  For the past several years, Rosehaven has generously hosted Ascot, specifically in the region known as Borderlands, owned by Ceejay Tigerpaw.  Rosehaven is a gorgeous estate and fits perfectly with the entire feel of Ascot.  We have been so blessed to have the support of Realm of Rosehaven owner Princess Selena Anansi and all the Denizens here for this event.  Many visitors to the yearly Ascot explore around Rosehaven … and then decide to stay!

JB:     And what is this “Team ACTS”.  Who are they, and what do they do?

LW:  Aether Chrononauts/Tiny Steps is one of many teams for SL Relay for Life, we are people from the Steamlands together with the Tinies of Raglanshire.

JB:     Do you have a fundraising goal for this year?

LW:  The mission of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Relay for Life in SL (RFL in SL) is to raise money to help in the fight against cancer, research for a cure and give support to those afflicted.  We have no specific goal; we just try to exceed what we raised last year (almost two million lindens in 2021) and provide a fun way for people to get behind the cause.

JB:     What sorts of incentives do you provide for people to donate?

LW:  We have several fun things for people to interact with Ascot.  You can donate to get the honor of naming one or more of the horses at the Royal Stables; or you can also donate to get your favorite horse in one or more of the lineups for the races.  Additionally, throughout the race days, you can enter raffles to win prizes and gift cards donated by shops from all over SL.  There are also opportunities to become a VIP Sponsor for Ascot, purchase a Royal Box ticket (very coveted seating), or, this year, enter a raffle to ride in the Royal Carriage to open Royal Ascot Day.

JB:    Horseraces, Horse Auctions, merchants, vendors of every kind?  I hear you even have a Wrestling Match scheduled? How is that working out for ya?

LW:  So much fun! To see it all come together with so many generous and creative people…it’s amazing.  We will have Premier Wrestling of SL put on some matches on the heath this year.  They are excited to do “old-school” bouts, complete with late Victorian uniforms and an old-style ring – and we are looking forward to watching!

JB:    This looks like quite an operation you have here.  Did you do this all yourself, or did you have help?

LW:  We have a great team of people to get this all up and running.  As I mentioned, Lady Oriella Charik and I founded the Ascot event for Team ACTS nine years ago.  Oyo Breedables creates all the custom horses, with our Royal Horse Master, Dirk Danger, heading up anything involving the horses, races, auction, and all the fun ways to donate at the stables.  Pazako Karu created the system for the naming and lineup activities.  Bain Finch has been expertly filming Ascot for the past few years.  Gerrard Winstanley is our superb Emcee for Royal Ascot.  Count Harlow Bloodrose and Arcadian Vanalten host The Count’s Cup Races.  Wildstar Beaumont, also C0-Captain of Team ACTS, photographs everything.  And I cannot say enough about the overall support we get from the RFL Committee and Community…Stingray, MamaP, Gem, Elayne, Cassie and Oldesoul Eldemar…all of the wonderful merchants and sponsors….too many to name.

JB:    I understand you have several events coming up in support of Royal Ascot?  What types of events, and when?

LW:  Yes.  Royal Ascot Season, as we call it, begins June 1 with an exhibit on some facet one might find at such an event.  This year, we will be honoring HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee with an exhibit about Royal Jewels.  The exhibit will run through June 30.  June 13th, we begin Ascot Shops Week.  Merchants and vendors from all over SL sell their wares at stalls on the center heath of the racetrack site.  We typically ask that the wares represent things from the time period of 1700- 1910’s, but there are always some surprising items here and there.  During the Shops Week, we have various DJ’s and other entertainment offerings as well. June 17th is The Count’s Cup Race Day; June 18th is Royal Ascot Day; and finally, June 19th is the auction of the horses.

JB:    I understand you have a Dress Code here?  Does it apply everywhere on the build?

LW:  There is a dress code for the Grandstands, but everyday dress is fine for those who wish to come to the races and view from the General Seating areas or on the center heath.  Come shop and enjoy the entertainment…just be clothed!

JB:    Where can people go to find out more about Ascot and some of the events you have planned?

LW:  We advertise via the ACS/RFLSL calendar and website, inworld groups, Discord, various news and events outlets inworld, and of course…SL Enquirer!

JB:    Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Readers?

LW:  Just that it is a privilege to make Royal Ascot SL happen every year and work with the amazing people who help put it all together.  I am honored to be Co-Captain of Team ACTS…a fantastic team known for its unique events such as the Time Travelers Ball, Antiquity Fair Week, Privateer’s Ball, ROMA Spring Festival and Tinies Ball to name a few the team holds throughout the RFL season.

So, there you have it folks.  Guaranteed to be a rip-roaring time…even if that time is the late 1800s.  Grab your top hat or parasol and come one down.  Or, if you prefer, come as you are and snag a seat in the general viewing area for the races. Check out the special events and activities, everyone is welcome!  You’ll be glad you did.

An in depth interview with Elite Management - Dean Lawson reporting

*Elite Equestrian*, the leading purveyer of all things equine and equestrian, is an enterprise that offers shopping and role play for Second Life horses and riders. I had the good fortune to chat with Elite Management to learn more about their original sim and their new Elite Riding Academy.
Dean :  Could you give me a brief overview of the history Elite Equestrian?
Elite Management : Elite Equestrian was formed this year as a spin-off to my parent brand, ~Ladies' Pleasure~, which was founded in November 2012. EE is a maker of the RealHorse horse breed avatars, tack and accessories for our 12 breeds of horses.  We have two regions, one is our main store location at Cherry Island, where we do most of our work and have our stores laid out conveniently for horses to shop.  Our original sim is where all of our demo models may be seen in action, and in some cases, even ridden!  Our second region is our roleplay sim in Tamarillo Island. We launched our roleplay sim, the Elite Riding Academy, in August of this year.  Other than being horse-centric, the two regions are very different. Cherry Island is our display sim; ERA is open to the public and to registered roleplayers, and while there is a small mall at our landing point, that is not the point of the region,

ERA was inspired by one of our customers, who said that she was unable to find a sim where she could RP with her RealHorse. We thought that was an opportunity for our team and so we asked our customers for input about what they'd like to see in an equine roleplay.  After talking to them for a week and collating their responses, we put the sim together in about 3 days and opened it that same week. One of my business partners, Cherry Lastchance, is responsible for the design and the decoration of our sims, and she has done a beautiful job.
Dean : How would you describe the roleplay at Elite Equestrian?
Elite Management : I think it's important to make clear we have two different sims. Our store sim is not a roleplay sim. Horses talk, shop, run around, do their thing, but it's totally not a RP place.  the Elite Riding Academy, however, is a full on RP sim, with horses and humans expect to engage in roleplay.  Our sim differs from other animal sims in several ways. First of all, we are focused on having an experience as close to a RL equine industry trainin facility as we can. Many of our RPers currently own/train/ride horses and quite a few have been horse owners/riders/trainers in the past, so there is a strong body of knowledge about the horse in our roleplay community.  We offer narrative roleplay, where roleplay is storyline driven, and again, in a way that would be logical in a high-end, American-based horse training facility.  Thirdly, we require all horses who are roleplaying at ERA to have an open RLV relay set to our group, so that the human RPers can bring them out, ride them, and otherwise RP with them as if they were RL horses.  That's another thing that makes our RP move more smoothly.  Human RPers aren't left dangling about 'how do I RP with this barn full of hostile horse avatars?' They know that if a horse is at the ERA, and in a stall or the turnout paddock, they are up for RP and they will respond to the human like a horse would.
We have formal RP times, when horses are introduced into the RP narrative through something we call 'Barn Walk'. Barn Walk takes 1 1/2-2 hours and we try to RP with as many horses as show up.
We also have competitions, clinic and other events, including performances off the sim.

Dean : Are the horse avatars in your stores created exclusively for Elite Equestrian?
Elite Management : Elite Equestrian is the spin-off company from ~Ladies' Pleasure~.  We are the maker of the *E* RealHorse, which we made because we wanted a horse avatar that was as close to RL as we could get. We now have 12 breeds, each in 2 genders, so a total of 24 horse avatars, with more breeds coming soon.  We spend much of our time working on our horses and the tack, hair, skins and accessories they wear.
Dean : Are all the horses avatars or can riders "wear" the horse they ride?
Elite Management : All of our horses are avatars. Some of our customers get the best of both worlds, by purchasing a horse to put on an alt that they register as a bot.

Dean :  With Halloween approaching are there any events that you will be hosting or that involve equestrian events?
Elite Management : yes, many in fact! We currently have a leaf chase going on, with random leaves appearing in the sim for the horses to chase to win 1 of 48 prizes. We have an upcoming Cross Country competition at Equine Island, which is currently decorated in their best Halloween spookiness.  We will also be participating in [ Free Bird ]'s 'Live Trick or Treat' at the end of the month, where our Percherons will be providing hay rides to our visitors.  (Our 'treat' will be a very cute limited edition 'Tiny Tails' horse avatar, in 6 different halloween patterns).  We've been invited to provide horses for hayrides at several events and of course, we have our special Costume Show on the 30th, with both ridden and driven dressage in costume.

Dean : Do you have any advice for anyone who is interested in roleplay but is new to SL RP?
Elite Management : Well, gosh. I myself am not what I'd call an epic RPer.  There are tons of places to go learn about RP, but I guess my best advice is to rememebr that IC actions usually bring IC responses, and if you don't like the IC response, maybe you need to stop your IC actions that generated it! Also, IC is not the same as OOC, and if you visit RP sims be respectful of the owners and mods, many of whom are doing what they do as a passion, not a job.  Respect their rules if you visit; usually it's not that hard to do and most places do list their rules pretty prominently.  There are tons of groups you can join to help connect you to a good community, as well. Search is a great tool, just type in 'Roleplay' into the groups tab and a lot of options will pop up.

Dean : Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Elite Equestrian?
Elite Management : We have built what we feel is the best horse avatar in SL, and we encourage anyone with an interest in going equine or riding to come try them out at our Cherry Island store or visit the Elite Riding Academy.  Horsing around in SL has been a lot of fun and I still find riding my personal horses a total blast, whether we're jumping, driving, or riding dressage.

SL Newser: Judge Issues Summary Judgement in Amaretto vs Ozimals Suit- Bixyl Shuftan Reporting...

One wouldn't expect a bunny and a horse to be enemies. But it was almost two years ago in which the companies that make them in Second Life ended up in a fight that reached real life court. For well over a year, nothing was heard about the case between Ozimals and Amaretto. Finally earlier this month, the judge over the case made a summary judgement. What did he rule, and who's claiming victory in "Bunneh vs Horsie?"

Spotlight feature: LET THE RACES BEGIN! Champion Horses & Interview with Janeatte Finchy, certified Champion Jockey & Trainer- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Racing horses for entertainment has a long history since way back in ancient times as the sport of Kings.  Horses and chariots come to mind when I think of how they were used in the ancient Greek Olympics, Egypt and in the Roman Empire coliseum.

Today it is still practiced in the United States, Canada, Europe and around the world and is regarded as an equestrian sport.

I have been to a RL horse track and Betting Arenas. They were filled with people from different places, coming together to enjoy the splendors of the Socialites and atmosphere while witnesses some real horses power in action.

In Second Life the fun of this Royal Sport is just beginning with Champion Horses…

Online college classes are an option for people who enjoy the Internet and like to play, work,
