The Genetic Journey of Max Chatnoir- Bimala Tagore Reporting

Legend: Max Chatnoir and molecules background
I had the pleasure of interviewing Max Chatnoir, a distinguished Professor of Biology in Texas Wesleyan. She is the “deity” responsible for the creation of the world Genome Island. The build is dedicated to the study of genetics. The island was designed to support genetics classes for university undergraduates studying biology, but anybody interested in science is welcome to participate.
Visitors have access to highly experienced author information, interactive microscopes,  a giant cell model, virtual experiments and variety of topics about inheritance. You will observe methodological objects related to Mendel's life and work and vast information in note cards about genetic information.
Max has made presentations about Genome Island and its use for teaching genetics at conferences sponsored by VWBPE (Virtual Worlds Best Practice in Education) Educause and the Texas Blackboard Users Group.   In Second Life she presented the opportunity to build virtual laboratories in which on line students could perform experiments and data analysis.
In this interview, Max Chatnoir shares with us her valuable experience as a teacher in a virtual classroom and interactive 3D laboratory with relevant information provided.   Although we discussed some of these topics, I would not regard them as special interests of mine, nor do I have any particular expertise in them.  I think it is simplest just to cut this statement.

Bimala Tagore: More than five years have passed after you decided to create Genome Island. How do you evaluate your project?
Max Chatnoir: I think that virtual worlds like this one are a wonderful place for learning.  You have the advantage of personal contact with another thinking human, via the avatars, but you don't have to be physically in the same place. They can ask whatever questions they have and if I'm not here, they can just IM me, and they'll get an answer the next time I come in. it's a nice combination of personal interaction with the convenience of working online. I wish I could use it for the majors, but they have to actually work with real equipment and organisms if they are going to be scientists. It's my favorite place to teach general education courses. Science for non-majors. The students also seem to find it interesting. I teach my nonmajors course here every fall and sometimes, if we have a bad weather day, I may bring the majors in for a substitute lab. We did a three-point-test cross here once when the flies didn't come in.

Bimala Tagore: The hard path is easier when you strive to learn. I have attained some insight about cell and study of genetics in Genome Island, interactive laboratory environment. What is it about science that interests you the most?
Max Chatnoir: What interests me most is that there is always something new and interesting happening. A new genome gets sequenced, or a new gene is discovered. I always point out to the research students, that no matter what their basic project is, they are doing some kind of genetic analysis. I think one of the exciting areas of contemporary genetics is bioinformatics, which is why I have several bioinformatics activities up on the Bioinformatics platform. Comparing genomes and comparing similar genes in different species. We know that our genes didn't originate with us, but we usually don't stop to think that most of them didn't originate with us as a species.  Our genes are older than we are. A lot of bioinformatics has to do with constructing and studying the information provided in DNA and protein databases. Every time a new genome is sequenced, the information goes into those databases. To learn about what makes us, it's helpful to see what we do and don't share with other species.

Bimala Tagore: Impressive application of biological information. Does genes determine the way of how we could react to our world and even how our mind could interpret the existence?
Max Chatnoir: I do think that genes have something to do with how we experience the world and react to it. Genes encode hormones and receptors and neurotransmitters and their receptors and a lot of molecules relevant to behavior. But it's not all genetics. Experience counts too in my opinion. For example, my sister and I didn't really grow up together because she is much younger.  I was finishing college before she started high school. But it's amazing how similar our preferences are. We order the same thing in restaurants and like the same kinds of fragrances, even though we spend very little time together- Got to be some genetics in there.
The great thing about the human mind is that we don't just behave thoughtlessly, but that is overlaid on what is sometimes called the lizard brain. And I'm not a behavioral geneticist, so I'm not speaking as an expert here. But our minds are a whole additional informational layer laid over our basic biology. It's like a separate genetic code that is better developed in us than in anything else.
Bimala Tagore: Plenty of interesting subjects. Some scientists and doctors have devoted their entire lives with the study of life and living organisms. You have theAbbey” and “Gardens” on your “sim”.  It is a tribute to Augustinian abbot Gregor Mendel. Why is it so important to become acquainted with Mendel?
Max Chatnoir: Mendel was the first person to articulate the "rules of inheritance" for sexually reproducing species. The amazing thing was that he had no idea what a gene might be. He just followed the inheritance patterns. The name "gene" wasn't even in use in his time.  He just called them "elements." Other people had done crosses similar to those Mendel did, but he was the first to offer an interpretation. Each parent provided an "element" for each of their traits. And that the offspring got one from each parent. For Mendel's traits, one of the two parental traits was always dominant to the other (but that isn't always the case);  that the parental elements sorted into the gametes at random and with equal probability. He did the mathematical analysis, and probably nobody could follow his argument at the time he first presented it. Yes, doing the mathematical analysis was unusual for biology. Although William Harvey had done something similar to prove that the blood HAD to be circulating. It couldn't just be made and destroyed all the time -- there was too much of it moving around. But most of biology was natural history.  Like Darwin was doing collection, describing, classifying. If Darwin and Mendel could have got together, they would have been a Force! But they didn't. However, they were roughly contemporary.

Bimala Tagore: Your explanation about Mendel’s positions as founder of genetics is pretty relevant. On the other hand, leading this interview toward ethics aspects, there are numerous thorny sides of genetic research that may lead to ethical and social quandaries. Gene therapy could lead to a dark side. What is your opinion in this respect?
Max Chatnoir: Sure it could. Imagine if we did start making "designer babies. Think of the social inequity, even assuming that all of the biology worked as we anticipated? And it won't. Do we really know enough about ourselves to design whatever we might think an ideal human is?
We can discover a lot about fruit fly behavior, because we don't agonize over the death of a fruit fly, but we can't do that with humans. So we have to depend on the "accidental experiments" of nature. And I'm not sure that even that is very nice.

Bimala Tagore: Regrettably, polemics about ethics are crucial. For this reason, genetics research information should always be open to frank human dialogue and Genome Island can communicate to non-expert too.
Max Chatnoir: I think that it can help with what the average citizen needs to understand about science and scientific thinking. Everybody doesn't need to know how to run a centrifuge, but everybody should be able to understand a scientific argument.
Bimala Tagore: I really appreciate the opportunity for this stimulating interview. Thank you very much.
Max Chatnoir: My pleasure

Laugh Your Way to the Joke Jar - LadyLoveDr Reporting

There are a lot of events and pleasurable activities that us Second Lifers can participate in to have a good time.   But where do we go when we really want a good laugh?  After searching high and low I finally stumbled into "The Joke Jar".  The outside is very welcoming with a big marquee above the entrance and a poster of the headliner off to the right as you enter.  The cost to get in the club itself is a pocket stunning NO CHARGE!  Once inside, you may have a seat on one of the oh so comfortable  couches and wait for the show to begin.  Tips are appreciated for the skillful comics, but not required.  I was lucky enough to snag an interview from Rezined 'Rez' Ruby, the founder of "The Joke Jar" when she wasn't booking her next comedians.

 Interview with Rezined

LadyLoveDr:  When did you open "the Joke Jar"?

Rez: The Joke Jar was officially opened to the public about 2 months ago in July.  I could have opened a lot sooner, but when we were doing the walls and the contractor was going over which colors to paint what, I would tell him a color and he would yell out the window "green side up".  After a few minutes of this I finally asked why he kept doing that when green wasn't my color? He informed me that he hired some blondes because they are cheaper and they were the ones installing the sod outside.  We finally just went with a nice wood walkway over a stream.

LadyLoveDr:  Where did you get the idea for such a place in SL?

Rez:  A friend of mine made me laugh until I cried my eyes out.  I kept telling her she needed to be a comedian.  She replied "I'd love to but I am afraid of getting booed off stage".  I then replied " Well, what do you think SL is for?  You might as well try it out and see if it's something you would like to do or not."  I built it in my shop for her to practice at.  She had an actual show and turned out to be crazy funny, even funnier than the nights previously.  I moved it to a different location and took on a co-owner-Jerkwad Borkotron, a very amazing friend & brother of mine that offered the land for the club, and here we are!

LadyLoveDr:  How far out do you book?

Rez:  We will book as far out as we can get.  We are always needing/looking for new acts.

LadyLoveDr:  Do you ever ask comedians at the club’s open mic back to headline?

Rez:  Yes.  I have also used the ones that turn in applications with us.  I do ask that they give us a show beforehand.  If they can't make me REALLY laugh from the get go.  Then they are not for us.  Unfortunately, with cancellations, this does not always happen.  I can tell you that open mic has become a bit disorganized and is chaotic at times, but we have and would always use a funny person!

LadyLoveDr:  Have you had many hecklers?

Rez:  Yes, we have had a couple.  I have been successful at keeping it down.  We want everyone to laugh from the bottom of their guts.  This doesn't mean to override the show with rudeness.  Heckling is not tolerated a the Joke Jar.  We ask that all keep it down to a minimum during the show.  I will step in myself if it gets out of control.

LadyLoveDr:  What is the number one mistake a new comedian can make on stage?

Rez:  Be unprepared!  If you're coming to do a show with us, please make sure to be there early for mic check, make sure you're ready to go a full set, and keep us laughing!

LadyLoveDr:  How many employees does "The Joke Jar" currently have and how do you see that changing in the future?

Rez:  I have 2 owners, 2 undercover recruiters, and 4 feature comedians.  We do not pay people to perform but they do get 100 % of tips they earn.  Also we don't really consider them employees.  Just fellow Jokesters!

This interview left me eagerly waiting for the Joke Jars next show!  If you're in the mood to laugh or make people laugh I'd recommend stopping by.  Show times are every Saturday night at 7:00 PM SLT.  As far as I am concerned, I would rather spend my Saturday night laughing at the Joke Jar than trying to explain to my young blonde patient what her stick of deodorant actually means when it says "To apply, push up bottom"; and why it is necessary for her to proceed with the removal surgery!

Baby Steps in Second Life: A Guide to Understanding your Avatar and Abilities- Debby Sharma Reporting...

It has been a long time since I wanted to walk all the newbies through the baby steps in Second Life. For few it’s difficult, but with the following pictorial tutorial, it should be a cup of tea.

When you visit https://join.secondlife.com/download.php, you will see the following:

Step 1: Choose your avatar

Step 2: Either log in with your Facebook ID or fill in the simple details. (You may choose to use the same email id for various avatars.) You will be asked, if you want to download the official Second Life viewer. You may either choose to accept or there are other third party viewers that you may download. Look at the end of the article for the list of third party viewers. I suggest to use the official SL viewer, but you always have a choice.

Step 3: Best is to read the Terms and Conditions and accept them by clicking on the tab.

You will see Step 4 appear on your viewer. Wait till it loads.
Step 5: Welcome to Second Life. Use arrow keys to walk.
Step 6: Look for the arrow boards placed in world and follow the directions.
Page up is used to jump, page down is to crouch. Use upward and downward arrow to move forward and backward respectively; left and right arrows for turning. Double tap on Page up will make you fly. One may use W, A ,S and D too.

Once you enter the Invisible swirling teleporter in Step 7, you will be teleported to the Welcome Island. There will be a number of new comers and also old avatars to help you out. Type is the local chat bar for help, and they will be at your assistance.

Before I proceed further, I want to give you a brief on the main tabs and their functions on the viewer. I am using the Official Second Life Viewer. The icons on the tabs are the same even if you use any third party viewer. Look into the picture below to know more.

Now, that we know a little about the viewer, our next step is to get dressed. Our avatar represents ourselves. I normally like to be a human. But, you may choose anything you wish. Click on the marketplace link http://marketplace.secondlife.com.
Whenever you buy, remember to use the words “promo, gift” along with the search item. This helps you to get a list of products that are free and yet you are not compromised on quality.  Remember never to buy the demo product; they are free to try out before you buy the original products. Demo products either have a box attached with the product or are textured with “demo” words. All items bought from the market place are received in the “Received Items” folder. This can be seen in your inventory. To track the recent purchases, it is best to click the “Recent” tab.

Second Life is a dream. So, if you want to be a panda, a horse, a Lilliput or a giant, all is possible. Search the market place and wear them. However, if you to be a human and want to go shopping in-world. If you ask around, you will be given landmarks to the Freebies Galaxy and the Freebies Dungeon. When I was a newbie, I had collected almost all the items at these places. It took me almost a year to know that I would not use half of the products.
 Why?
Some are of lesser quality and others household materials because they are high on prims. Hence, I suggest go for brand names that have free to join groups or subscriber kiosks and receive group gifts occasionally.

To dress up like a human avatar, we need hair for the head, skin, shape, clothes, shoes and accessories. To get it all at one place, my most favourite is the JStyle Store. Click the following link to teleport. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Deepscale/65/163/3202.

A one stop shop for both females and males. Once you get there, click on the rotating pink heart to join the group. In the notifications, you will see a message appear, click “join” and you will be added as a member. In the shop, hover your mouse on the big pictures; if they turn from an arrow to a hand, they are free. Click on them, and click “Keep” in the notification area. Your folder of bought items will be saved in the Inventory.  If the arrow turns to “L$” when you hover on pictures, it means they can be bought only.
There are many boxes of freebie hair and animation overriders or “Ao”. The Ao helps the avatar to move even while standing at a place. Right click these boxes, kept on the floor, and select “Buy”. Click “Buy” to buy the items in the boxes. Either they are saved as a folder in your inventory or under the objects tab.

The other option is to visit other places for each component. At each of the following store, join their group to receive the group gifts for lifetime. The groups are free to join. The best part is quality of the products is good. Look for the words “Join the group”, click it and join at each store.

Here are a few landmarks you can teleport to:
For hair visit the Diva Main store Isle (2nd floor) for females
For skin visit mojo skins body boutique for females http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/MOJO/130/128/21
For clothes for both men and women visit
Other stores you may visit are Ydea, GB etc. Search the store name in the search bar within the viewer to teleport.

Few items when bought are delivered to you in objects. These objects are saved in Inventory under the “objects” folder. To open the items in the objects, search for a “rez zone” or a “sandbox” in the search window within the viewer. Click “teleport” in one of the search results. Once you are teleported, left click the object in the inventory and drag it out to the ground near you. When you see the box on the ground, right click on the box and click “open”. A new small window will appear, click “save to inventory”. All the items in the object, i.e, a box will be transferred to your inventory in a folder. To wear the items in your inventory, simply open the folders and right click, then select “add” or “wear”. In case, you still have problems, ask someone near you. The residents in Second Life are always willing to help unless they are busy.

With the advent of mesh, few of the newbies and even the existing avatars, look for mesh clothes and mesh avatars. When you enter Second Life, you will find yourself in a mesh avatar. Mesh gives a more realistic view to your avatar and can be best seen in mesh enabled viewers. Almost all the latest viewers are mesh enabled. The avatar that you have as a newbie is fitted mesh, i.e., you can scale them in the appearance according to your liking. Mesh is best when worn with an alpha. Alpha is an invisible layer that hides the original avatar.  Even for other avatars, non –human, few are available with alpha. Right click on the alpha layer and click “add”.

To get the latest mesh body for free, The Shops are the best option at the moment in Second Life. However, they are only available for female human. Click here to visit the Shops mesh body project free body for females
·         http://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/154692 mesh project
The following picture tutorial will help you to buy at The Shops, as it is a little complicated process.

Step 1: Click on the picture you see on the wall to teleport to The Mesh Project.
Step 2: When you arrive at the landmark, you will receive a folder. Open the folder in your inventory. Always click the “recent” tab as it is easier to locate the folder. Right click “The Shops! Shopping Hud” and select “add”.
Step 3: Click on “THE SHOPS” that you see on the bottom left corner. A new window of the hud appears within the viewer. Select your language and agree to the terms of service of The Shops. Click Continue.

Step 4: Click on the white mesh body on the wall of the shop. In the hud, select the last small white mesh body to the right, it is for 0L$, and select buy.

Step 5 and 6: Keep the folder in your inventory. Open and add the body, feet and hands (left and right). Also add the alpha of body, hands, feet and hands.
Step 7, 8 and 9: Next add the “StyleMode Hud” and click Style from the bottom right of the screen. In the new window below edit, click “Styles”; then click one of the objects you are wearing from the white options below in the screen. Click the color button and select the skin color that matches your head. Note that the head is non mesh. You may choose to buy the mesh head in future. To buy the donated pink mesh dress and shoes at The Shops, right click on them while wearing the Shopping Hud, and select buy. Pay 1L$ each, wear them and repeat the process to use different textures.
Note that the Shopping Hud and the StyleMode Hud does not work if you are not at The Shops.

In the above picture, the bodies are mesh. Apart from the original mesh avatar, the heads of the other two are non-mesh. You may see that there is not much of a difference for starters. The problem with mesh bodies is that not all the clothes can be worn for them. Each mesh body has to wear specific set designer clothes only. I am wearing the JStyle Store clothes and avatar mixed and matched. Hair is from the Diva Store.  Well, once set and ready, it is time for you to explore.  Click on the “Destination” tab at the bottom or the “Search” tab at the left of the viewer. There are lots to do in Second Life. You will be amazed at the potential. Have fun exploring.

Avatars on top: How does Second Life empower you? Bimala Tagore Reporting…

How does SL empower you? How does this virtual world provides you resources, opportunities and personal growth motivation? Do you think SL has permitted you to create an environment where you can realize activities that expand awareness and identity, enhance talents and contribute to the realization of visions and desires?
We are talking about any kind of growth whether daring shows, fashion magazines, unexplored business, boundless love, discovering your hidden talents, etc. Empowerment in SL includes a background which holds opportunities for reaching any kind of goals.
La Freese, Sagia, Subtlety Dalglish, Eugenia Calderon and Nino de Amore were recently interviewed about this topic. It is so inspiring to appreciate how they spread their interest, thoughts and inspirations with dedication and commitment.

Eugenia Calderon: Devoted professor

Bimala: I appreciate people around the world who defend their own cultural values. Many times when we expose to foreigners cultures you can damage you own identity. Eugenia Calderon (2008) protects her Mexican roots with wisdom and dedication. She is Spanish language professor and commitment on to impart education that promotes Mexican culture in Second Life.

Eugenia:  “Second Life empowers me because it has allowed me to develop both personally and professionally and of course it has allowed me to get money at the same time.  I mean, I have had the opportunity to meet wonderful people from around the world. I have learned a lot from them, not only on how to seeing life but also on professional issues. Many wonderful teachers have given me several ideas to improve my work. In addition, SL has given me a new way to develop professionally and to evolve as a Spanish teacher. It was a big challenge to access new technologies for teaching languages. I'm not a digital native as young now, so make use of the internet, virtual worlds and social networks has not been easy. But I'm learning and that's great.”

Subtlety Dalglish: passionate poet

Bimala: Subtlety Dalglish (2008) is provocative and maybe she ignores this inner clout, because she always incites a certain intense reaction in some of her writings. Her style reveals not only intelligence but it is also exciting eroticism. Her poetry is very intense, deeply suggestive and constantly recreates imaginary natural exotic ambience.

Subtlety: “I truly do not feel I am empowered with any special ability.  I feel and believe that I am an ordinary person who loves doing a variety of things on Second life that any number of persons can accomplish or have accomplished. I love to create poetry and short stories; I love to sing; I love to decorate houses and recreate them from their original state into something that I love even more.   I have even built a few houses of my on Second Life, but not to sell, they are for my own personal usage only. I also try my hand at building furniture every now and then. It is tedious but can be very enjoyable.  I taught myself how to terraform my land, which is very amusing.   At the present time, my sim resembles a tropical island.  And yes, I can draw/sketch, but have not done so in many years. So i suppose it is safe to say, that Second Life has empowered me in many areas of my existence therein.

La Freese: noob Guru, music promoter and eternal friend

Bimala: Through my eyes she is live music warrior. This woman is always  dancing in her club. La Freese’s venue holding its own in fierce competition in the world of entertainment in SL with bravery and audacity.  She has the capability to have patience and tolerate any noob without losing her cool.
La Freese: I am inspired by all the wonderful creative people do in sl. I mentor singers, djs   and  others to   do what they wish to do in SL. I also enjoy helping all newbies, because if you enter to SL knowing you are appreciated, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with. But overall music is my passion. I darling all  types of music  as music is talks to the heart or it parleys to my heart,  with   stories of my life good and bad  and  future wishes. It lifts the mood and spirit. I am known  for  full theme  decorated   shows that  not only  try to put you   in the mood for the music  but    adds  to   the visual  senses.

Sagia Monroe: biosphere of mode

Bimala: Sagia (2008) is behind the scenes of good show events with impressive clothes designers, stunning models and professional editors. She reflexively surrounds herself with elegance and luxury.

Sagia: “Second Life empowers me to bring joy and fun to others who have come to Second Life to get away from the stresses of real life.  This is done by my tribute shows in my Swinging with Sagia Group and Show Style Entertainment.
In my heart I care much for people and in Second Life I am also able to give others opportunities in which they cannot get in real life.  For instance, I am a fashion show director and co-owner of a modeling agency.  So many love this opportunity so I teach them how to model and they rock the runway in elegance and style.   Reputation is very important, so Second Life empowers me to try and elevate its culture.”

Nino de Amore: Capone vocalist

Bimala: The lights dim, the music begins to play and I fly to the moon with Nino de Amore (2010). This man owns an Italian swing. I'm thoroughly impressed with what he does in every performance. He seduces women by building charisma. His voice pays tribute to the seductive Italian singer and his chorus will absolutely melt your heart.

Nino: “I am the same person in both worlds. I sing any kind of good Jazz, Big Band tunes, Blues, Bocelli, DMartin and Sinatra. “I drank music from the bottle”. Music is expressively attractive to me and I can't pretend I'm someone else here”, confesses Nino with his raspy sexy voice.
