Amazing Graces in Second Life: For a Better Real Life – Glossom Resident reporting…

We could mention many success cases of residents who have become real millionaires thanks to Second life. Or even of successful virtual relationships which changed the lives of real people in a very positive way. However, today we will go further and we will be addressing amazing uses of Second Life that have great impact in Real Life.

This virtual platform is very effective when it comes to creating campaigns to help people plagued by natural disasters or to raising funds for the underprivileged to ensure their basic needs. In this global platform it becomes easier to reach new targets and appeal to the hearts of residents and involve them in noble causes. Either as an act of altruism or selfishness, the truth is that the volunteer also benefits from a fantastic feeling that he/she is doing a good deed.

VMS News: Relay for Life & SL: A Bit of History- Jallon Pizarro Reporting...

Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

The Relay for Life came into existence in the mid-1980’s. This wonderful and life changing idea was brought into fruition by Dr. Gordy Klatt; Klatt was a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington.

The reasoning behind creating the Relay for Life events was to maximize and enhance the income of his American Cancer Society. The very first event that was held by Dr. Klatt was one in which he endured a rigorous twenty-four hours going around the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than eighty-three miles. By the time it was all said and done he raised twenty-seven thousand dollars to go towards the battle against fighting cancer. Just months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay to be known only as the City of Destiny Classic Twenty-Four Hour Run Against Cancer. The story of the Relay For Life is one with a goal to raise money to fight cancer while having a great time with friends, family and perhaps new acquaintances. To unify neighborhood, community and even our world battling cancer while at the same time celebrating those of us that survived the fight while remembering those that did not during The Lumineria Ceremony.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Relay For Life of Second Life shatters records in 2011, raises US$375,000 for cancer research

Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, has once again shattered records in Second Life.
Less than halfway through the 2011 Relay season, the Relay For Life of Second Life had already raised more than one million dollars all-time.
At the Wrap-Up Party on Saturday, August 20, 2011 Event Chair MamaP Beerbaum proudly announced that the seventh Relay For Life of Second Life had set a new season fundraising record of US$375,000, had a record number of 140 teams, and a record number of over 3,000 relayers.
This year’s theme was ‘Seasons of Hope’ and was the largest to date, with a track lined by luminaria winding through 41 sims of amazing builds representing the different seasons. Some 2,140 avatars completed one or more laps, a combined total of 3,486 laps, and visited the campsites and the designer sims. And 4,817 luminaria were lit in support of loved ones going through treatment, and in memory of those heroes who have passed on.

• Sunday, November 07, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, November 01, 2010

ON SUNDAY, November 7, starting at 11am SL time, there will be a fabulous MAKEOVER MAGIC fashion show on the American Cancer Society island in Second Life. Four cancer survivors, a caregiver, and a survivor/caregiver, along with their fashion mentors, will display their new looks. Please come and join us in this celebration of courage and caring!SLURL:http://slurl.com/secondlife/American%20Cancer%20Society/168/34/23
MAKEOVER MAGIC is organized by a team of volunteers from the American Cancer Society in Second Life, along with SL fashion experts and mentors. The team is led by Cinders Vale, herself a breast cancer survivor in real life. This is the program’s fourth year. It is the Second Life equivalent of a real-life program, ‘Look Good…Feel Better’, a nationwide, public service program in the USA supported by the American Cancer Society which teaches female cancer patients beauty tips to look good during chemotherapy and radiation treatments, improve their self-esteem, and manage their treatment and recovery with greater confidence. Women learn about makeup, skin care, nail care, and ways to deal with hair loss such as wigs, turbans and scarves. There are also self-help materials available for men going through treatment.
