EMA’s Model Training - Tabitha Mercury Reporting…

Recently, while I was out venue hoping, I decided to fill out an application for a modeling position with Eden Modeling Agency (EMA). Owned by Jocelyn Amber and Aufreizend Lexico, EMA is located on the Dragon Field sim. I turned it in after filling it out with all my previous hopes and dreams about being an SL model. I have wanted to get into modeling in SL since I started years back. I was here years ago, under a different name which I had no idea how to get into, I think I may have even deleted the account. My memory grows fuzzy in my old age. *wink*

The Initial Meeting

Sue (sue.terr): I am the CEO and Trainer so you will only be with me for the course and any shows or shoots we do

Tabitha Mercury nods

Sue (sue.terr): Today I want to establish if you have the right enthusiasm behind you to become a model. The course is free and takes around 6 weeks as this is spread out so it does not interfere with your S/L life as well as your R/L life.

Tabitha Mercury nods

Sue (sue.terr): Should you pass the course you will be awarded a certificate of training and a place will be offered as a registered model at Eden Model Agency

Tabitha Mercury: (I am surprised it is free, that's a bonus for sure!)

Sue (sue.terr): yes it is

Sue (sue.terr): Besides the course there will be AO’s you will need for photo shoots and catwalk shows which could cost 2000L but I can show you which you require.

Sue (sue.terr): I do not want to mislead you thinking you have no other costs.

On shoots and shows you are given clothing jewelry and footwear by the designers which can be of 800L or more so free clothing is what you get, however you may get tips too.

Aufreizend Lexico: Tabitha, reason the course is free, is you need to buy the AO

The interview with Sue

The questions posed:

  • So can you tell me why you could be a model?

  • Do you have any dependents to look after in S/L or R/L?

  • Are you married or have a B/F G/F who may get upset if you're not available In S/L or R/L?

  • How would you feel on a photo shoot just wearing underwear with the photographer looking at you for a shot?

  • Do you take orders well?

  • Could you give 12 hours notice if you can not attend a shoot or show?

After pondering my truest answers and answering their very good questions, I excitedly accepted their offer (Aufrezend sat in) to do model training with them. I shot off a letter to my editor, explaining my latest article idea. A weekly peek into what it’s like to become a model in SL. Luckily, she approved and here we are.

First day of training

I landed at the sim and went into the office to wait for Sue Terr, the CEO and trainer of Eden Modeling Agency (EMA). She had a R/L thing and we started an hour later than scheduled, which was fine as I was a dingbat and thought that I would be training for 5 hours every week, during one sitting and prepared my schedule as such. It is only one hour per week, I was very relieved to find out.

We went to the modeling studio classroom and began my training. There was a lot of information given. A lot of requirements and common sense things one could expect. First we started with the rules of modeling.

  1. If you go to a casting, runway practice or fashion show, be there at least 30 minutes before it starts. ( it's a Golden Rule )

  2. Never ever wear bling shoes or jewelry.

  3. The runway is not the place for shoes with sound.

  4. Please do not wear any hair that is glowing. (use the midnight setting to see this)

  5. Respect other models and designers and their work.

She stressed number 5 and mentioned she wouldn’t hesitate to drop you from future shows and shoots because she will not tolerate anything less. Personally, I think this is a very professional approach and should be what’s expected in the industry from each other.

I got lessons in lag, my body, tattoos, a hair reminder about glowing hair and the reminder that your face, body, style (clothing), is your branding. I must admit, I was disappointed upon finding out that I would have to change my petite body to a tall body on occasions, depending on the designer's needs. Lamented the fact that I would likely have to remove my tattoos and then had the horrible realization that I was going to have to remove my wedding ring, as well.

I was relieved to find out that I can go back to being “me” when I am not doing the shows or the shoots. I feel it would be smart to keep myself in “designer” clothing to keep the branding of myself going, modeling or not. My face will stay true, my body shape may change temporarily to an amazonian goddess size, I can wear my wedding band when not working as a model, and it’s a good thing this is SL and I can remove and add my tattoos at a moment’s whim.

Conclusion

I knew that modeling in SL would entail a lot. I had hoped to find a place where I didn’t really have to change my body shape but I haven’t found one, yet. You become partial to your avatar, as it is an extension of yourself and take great care in curating what you feel makes your avatar the you that you want to be in SL. I would say that if you are not willing to change these things, modeling in SL professionally is not the route you want to go. For myself, this will be an adjustment, but I do look forward to my opportunity before me!

Spotlight on LUXE Paris Look of the Year 1st Runner Up– Hunipet Delicioso–Ely Catronis Reporting…

This past August, the Announcement was made for the LUXE Paris Look of the Year 2022.  We have already met the Ambassador this year, I would like to take the time to introduce you to another special lady. She is someone in Second Life to explore and be silly and have fun in her early years who found her way into the depths of the modeling and fashion world inside the grid. Come, sit down and have a chat with the amazing and interesting Runner Up, Hunipet Delicioso.

INTERVIEW WITH HUNIPET DELICIOSO

Ely Catronis (EC): Before we get to know you, the person behind the avatar, I am curious, what was it like to hear your name announced as a runner up?

Hunipet Delicioso (HD): Have you ever been so surprised that you freeze? That’s what it was like for me. I remember thinking “Wait… what?? Was that MY name?”  It was… an amazing experience. I hope that every model has the opportunity to hear their name being announced.

(EC): That is an amazing experience.  Truly exciting. Can you share a little about yourself, how you found this vast world of Second Life? Any fun stories from those newbie days to share?

(HD):  A friend of mine told me about SL and encouraged me to sign up. During my early days in SL, I was attracted to the Neko look… humans with cute kitten ears and a big fluffy tail. The Neko tail was a great icebreaker when I was surrounded by strangers I had to interact with. My favorite was to pick gum out of my tail and throw it at someone. Yes, I have a bit of imp in me. Those were fun years.

(EC): I think sometimes, our early days did spark something in us all.   You do have something there.  What made you start out in modeling? Are there models or designers that inspire your work?

(HD):  I had burned out as a host and needed a break when a friend encouraged me to try modeling classes. I thought “why not?” and signed up. In RL, I’ve always gravitated toward challenges and SL modeling has provided me a *lot* of them.

There are so many talented designers in SL that there’s no way I could narrow down to one or two. I love classic looks with touches of unique and creative details. Karl Lagerfeld is probably my (current) favorite fashion inspirator. Avant-garde can be challenging but a lot of fun.

(EC): Do you have any advice for people interested in fashion or modeling?

(HD): The main thing is to enjoy it. Have fun. Try different things. There are SO many different areas in the SL fashion industry! A lot of them don’t involve walking on the runway or competitions at all. Creative set designers are in demand along with people who can wrangle the backstage making sure models are cued on time, etc. Think of SL fashion as an endless buffet of choices. Take time to sample everything. You may surprise yourself.

(EC): That is a wonderful way to look at Fashion. I am sure there is someone out there who needs to hear that. Are there any other events or organizations that you are involved in?

(HD): I’ve been in the modeling world for only 2 years so I’ve been focusing mainly on learning as much as I can from as many different people as I can find. In the last year, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to write scripts for two fashion shows produced by Fashion Life Modeling Agency. My future plans are to continue classes with Ponchituti Boucher, One On One Modeling Tutelage & Academy. I’m looking forward to their intern program where I’ll be able to learn first-hand the behind-the-stage parts to modeling. I will absolutely audition for other competitions.

(EC):Those are wonderful opportunities.  You mention behind the scenes a lot in the fashion world and have an appreciation for all the antics that happen there. What was your favorite memory from the Look of the Year Contest?

(HD):  Oh boy… my favorite? That’s hard. People… It's the people I met through the Look of the Year contest. Having a chance to get to know the other ladies… They are fabulous stylists! It’s wonderful to see how others put an outfit together. Especially when I get the “why didn’t I think of that!!” moment. So much talent. The relationships I developed during the LUXE Paris Look Of The Year competition are the real prize.

(EC): Thank you so much for taking the time to sit and chat today.  It really has been an honor and a pleasure to meet you and work with you.  Before we go, is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

(HD): Ely, thank you so much for the opportunity to talk to you. I’d like to share two quotes that have made a huge difference in my life… RL and SL.

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. If you don’t take a risk, you may miss out on some wonderful life experiences. What’s the worst that could happen? You get a “no”? Then keep asking.  You’d fail? Failure only means you haven’t found the right solution yet.

You don’t get what you wish for, you get what you work for”.  I have that one sitting on my RL work desk. Every time I get frustrated or feel defeated, reading that quote energizes me again.

Whatever you want to be, whatever you want to do… roll up your sleeves and work for it. Take risks. Ask questions so you are making informed decisions.

Lastly… please laugh as often as you can. Your mind cannot process pain at the same time when you are laughing. Look for the things to make you smile. Your body will thank you.

A huge thank you to Mika Palmyra, Parisian Skytower, Ponchituti Boucher, Lali Arbizu, Hyaecinte, Ѕнoly  KᴀᴇsϮηᴇя  Ƶнασуιηɢ. I know I missed some names, please forgive me.

Changing the definition of beauty WE ARE THE WORLD Fashion Show

A bit like that memorable night of January 1985, when dozens of singers from all over the world came together to record WE ARE THE WORLD, 22 models of all ethnicities will tell the fashion of the world SATURDAY October 1st at 12 PM SLT in a striking fashion show by The Powerhouse agency and LUXE Paris.

By Mika Palmyra

''Check your egos at the door'' read the sign placed by Quincy Jones on the front door of A&M Studios that night in L.A., 37 years ago. Here in Second Life, we could write: CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY, the message that inspired the foundation of The Powerhouse Collective and that LUXE Paris also conveys through its slogan DIVERSITY.

France, USA, Africa, Argentina, UK, Spain, Ireland. Japan, Italy... The 22 Power models will take us around the world with evocative looks assembled with LUXE Paris clothes.

The models were left completely free to create the look of their choice with the LUXE Paris outfits of their choice to illustrate the fashion style of the nation of their choice. This freedom to create combined with the expertise of the Power models has given spectacular results, of which we give you a brief overview in a superb photo taken by Melinda Bayn de Naidoo.

To see the rest, you will have to join us SATURDAY October 1st at NOON for our WE ARE THE WORLD in the name of the beauty of all colours!

LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR 1st Runner-up BECKY KENAAN United States

MOST PERSEVERING COMPETITOR!

LOOK of the YEAR finalist in 2012, 2018 and 2020, Becky Kenaan was in her fourth final this year when she finally reached the position of first runner-up, setting a record for perseverance in the same breath.

``Perseverance has been something ingrained in me by my parents since I was a small child, explains Becky. They have taught me to reach for the highest goals in my life, and never regret or be afraid to fail or fall short - for it builds upon your character and inner
strength. Who knows... maybe I'll throw in my hat in the ring again next year!``

What motivates her? Taking up life's challenges.

``Challenges make you dig deep into yourself, `` she says. ``Every challenge that comes our way takes us off the beaten track in many ways. The challenges of the LUXE Paris LOOK of the YEAR competition allowed me to expand my skills and knowledge base in fashion exponentially.``
``
PASSIONATE ABOUT BIOPHILIA

No wonder Becky fell in love with the colors and fashion of Second Life, she is an architect and colorist in real life and has a passion for biophilic design. This new
path of architecture builds on the fundamental love of humans for what is alive
and promotes the use of colors and shapes of nature, light, and water, to create an
environment that makes human beings feel good.

``I am specialized in designing medical facilities and in the health care profession,
color plays an especially important biophilic role for both emotional and physical
well-being``, explains Becky.

``I find fashion and architecture to be very closely linked. In both cases, the form
must marry the function but also deploy a fluidity, right proportions, a history and
a personal expression.

I like to apply biophilia to both architecture and fashion. It is the very essence of our
humanity and binds us to all other living species.``

What does fashion mean to you?

``It is, sometimes, my own form of escapism`` confides Becky. `` It allows me to
express my mood with conviction, to articulate my self-expression where words
simply cannot. It often serves as an emotional boost that can make a dull day seem
brighter, and it also serves as a reminder that on even bad days, when nothing is
going as I had planned, I’m armed. As Diana Vreeland once said, “Fashion must be
the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world.

MAKE HATRED AND BIGOTRY GO AWAY

This is what Becky would change in the real world if she had a magic wand.

``I am concerned about where our world is headed these days,`` Becky continues.
``However, as an optimist, I believe that as the world evolves, so does humanity and
that there is hope that our society will make the necessary corrections to improve the
human condition for us all.``

What was your first thought when it was announced that you were the first runner-up?

``WOW!  LOL...  I was certainly thrilled to reach this plateau in my modeling career!
Of course, you always strive and hope to win the whole “kit and kaboodle... But the
judging was very fair… and for me, the outcome served as an indicator as to where
I ranked in this sensational group of talented women. I am honoured.``

Your best moment in this competition?

``I enjoyed the challenge “Reveal the LUXE Paris star in you'' hands down! I chose to
embody Audrey Hepburn for her many contributions to French haute couture. Not only
did I admire her grace, beauty and intelligence, but I also admired her belief in helping
others less fortunate than her.``

The worst moment?

``When my brother-in-law had passed away as a result of the COVID-19 virus. This
came during my preparation for the finale.  It has devastated our family.``

An Interview With Dahriel Nova, Pose Creator - Stacey Cardalines Reporting

Models occupy an elite spot in the human spectrum. As people used for advertising, they enter into a strange dynamism. Models help sell us stuff that we buy because we want to be a certain kind of person, and- thusly- models have to somehow become the person that we want to be. Anyone who says a model's work is easy knows not of what they speak. In order to do the job properly, they have to not only act as Gods, they have to at least externally believe that they are Gods.

On something like SL, even a God needs help. That leads us to this week's interview, with Dahriel Nova. Mr. Nova is the man behind PosESioN Productions and the PosESioN store. He makes and sells model poses and runway animations. He also owns and operates BOOTHology, which makes booths for designers. If you are a model or a designer, he has you covered.

Models are important to the SL economy. Much of the monetary activity on SL involves buying clothes. It is better for the business to have a model wearing their clothing in advertisements than it is to just show a picture of the clothing. The model shows what can be done with the clothing. Anyone who does even a little bit of clothes shopping has seen a picture of a model in action and has concurrently seen a small cog in a big engine that drives the SL economy.

While a great part of modeling is being Born Pretty, it is not the sole ingredient. The world is full of pretty girls who don't quite know-how to utilize what they are sitting on, and that is why you sometimes see them folding sweaters at Forever 21 or slinging eggs at some edge-of-town truck stop. Ansel Adams himself might take a pretty girl and have her sit for some headshots, but unless the girl knows what she's doing, he's never going to rise above cheesy Facebook-type pictures.

"Knows what she's doing" involves Posing. Posing is an important business in SL. If you have an AO, and even if you don't, you are Posing. Posing is emoting without words. It is more important than you'd think.

Almost any girl you see in pornography- with some Born Freak exceptions, of course- is someone who most likely aimed to be a real actress at one point, but who could not emote properly. It really can be a game of inches. You'd be surprised at how little skill exists between a girl blowing a kiss to the Vogue photographer for $300,000 on a South Seas photo shoot, and an alternative scenario where she is taking on a half dozen Hell's Angels in an adult movie for $300 and some cocaine.. or so people tell me. "From the sublime to the ridiculous is but a step," as Napoleon once said.

Fortunately, you can solve that equation in your favor by visiting the PosESioN Store. If you wish to be a model on SL, this is where you need to go. They have hundreds of poses, some simple, some extravagant, but all necessary. They even sell those catwalk animations where you head down the runway. My sister and I spent an afternoon trying these out, as you can see from the pictures in the article. We also got to speak with the sim owner, the aforementioned Mr. Nova.

He has been in business since 2012, and is one of the leading figures in his field. There may be no model worth walking around SL who doesn't have at least a few of his poses in their arsenal. A lot of model work is done with pose balls and huds, and to work those, they need poses. Lots of poses. Lots of poses are what PosESioN has. You could fill up a model hud very efficiently at PosESioN, and you won't go into the poorhouse doing so at 60 Ls a pop.

I forgot to ask why Mr. Nova spells PosESioN like that, but a little bit of mystery is good in certain niche markets.

Pose Creator is a fascinating job, and I am 100% certain that people use Mr. Nova's poses at the fashion show he attends without knowing that they are posing. That may or may not secretly delight him. Contrary to what I assumed, most of his friends aren't models. He uses his own shapes for models unless he is doing couples poses, so he would only cross paths with them at events. He is working on a fashion fair for May, so he (and you, if you go) might meet some models there. They also have an in-house fashion show on April 17th.

When Mr. Nova does hire models, he is not beholden to tall/slim types. He needs models of all sizes and has some people who do headhunting for him. I intend to interview one of these women for a future article, but that is not where we are right now.

His best selling pose is his default pose. He doesn't do huds, but his systems fit huds. Almost all of his customers are models, as the product is made for advertising and runways. He has a male model pose section, as male models are in as much demand as female models... but I went there to shoot pictures with my sister Courtney, so you get us.

I always wanted to be a model when I was a kid. I only ended up being 5 feet tall, and that sort of ended my supermodel fantasy. It also ended my WNBA fantasy, but I can't avoid that reality in Mr, Nova's store for a pleasant hour. I can play Model there all day, however. If I buy some poses, I can play at home, too.

I'd recommend this store to a model looking to add to her arsenal, and I would recommend the store to regular girls who just want to spend an hour playing with the poses. It is essential to a model. however.

Bookmark their website to get updates on deals they are offering, and join their SL groups!

Some April-May events you can visit that are associated with Mr. Nova:

The Darkness Event (5th to 28th)
Jail Event (10th to 30th)
XXX Original Event (13th to 3rd)
101L Event (19th to 13th)
GLAMAZON Boutique (23th to 16th)
