WANT TO START A VIRTUAL BUSINESS? Debby Sharma reporting

The first thing we do when we enter the virtual worlds is find out ways to earn virtual currency. It doesn’t take us long to understand that to fulfil all our desires in a virtual setup, we would need an inflow of virtual currency. If we could make good friends and we like what we have and we could stick long enough, sooner or later, there is one more desire we all have, “Why not start a business?”
Few people start a trade ingame within a inworld, like Second Life has G&S System to trade goods, food, metal etc for Gorean Community. Few indulge in clothing line by either making original mesh items like Just Because and others re-texturing the mesh items adding prim clothing to make it unique like Heth Haute Couture. Few get into sale of estates like IrishGent of Seychelles Isles and others either get into re-renting the lands and skyboxes or designing the sim like Sera Bellic. Few make homes like Robert Galand of Galand Homes others get into making furniture like what’s next. The list of established businesses can get exhaustive. These big names of Second Life, inspire us to ask a simple question, “Why not me?”

Exactly, why not me? We too can start a business. We too can run a successful one. So what’s the next step? I asked three such entrepreneurs around the grid for their views and also the mistakes that we make when we indulge in a start up in a virtual world. Here are their replies.

Indea Vaher: Second Life is microcosm of our real world, and anything that is achievable in the real is obtainable in our virtual world.  Most residents want to try their hand at the business they’ve always dreamed of which can be opened with a click of a mouse.
Sometimes we jump into these businesses based on our own passions, our fantasy of the dream job we wished we had in real life, the postal worker becomes an artist and opens their own gallery, the hardware store clerk becomes a big time club owner, and with a few clicks of a mouse, the retired building inspector is now a popular DJ.  People have found in Second Life that any business you want to start you can in a blink of eye, however what is often not done in the virtual world is a study of where your target audience is or if there is a demand for the commodity/services you have to offer.
Many jump into a venue without a business plan or revenue projections to ensure profitability and as a result fail.  However, for many of these businesses simply turn into social venues, and they justify the expense like a hobby doing something they enjoy and never get a return on their investment.
The most successful entrepreneurs in virtual worlds are those  who approach it in the same manner as it’s done in the real world, they establish that there is a demand for their creations, products or services. They have the necessary professional skills to create the product they offer, and for many it’s usually utilizing a skill they’ve obtained in real life.  They don’t think in terms of lindens but in actual currency, reconciling expenditures with incoming revenue.

The following is the conversation with IrishGent, owner of Seychelles Isles.

Debby Sharma: What are the few pointers that you would suggest a resident before they start a business?
IrishGent: Determine the business you want to start.  Research the basics using other like companies on SL. If you are selling products using Market Place, research (wiki) as a starting point on the setup of your account, TOS (Terms of Service), Copy Write Laws, etc. If you are interested in being a Land Lord, research other like estates on their land offerings and creating a brand.
Debby Sharma: According to your experience, which has been the most difficult time while you started your start up?
IrishGent: Resource management and staffing.  SL is a volatile universe with peoples interest working on an estate mirroring the volatile culture of SL. Sitting in front of their computers people have a different level of commitment which to say the least is lacking.  There are a few exceptions to this rule which I have been very fortunate to have a staff that is dedicated and very supportive.  It took many employees to get to this point but I must say I am impressed with my current staff.  Patience is a must giving everyone their objectives and assignments.  A long leash is a required so that they may maintain a level of balance between work and play in SL.
Debby Sharma: Should a resident start a virtual business with a motive of earning or for a generic motive of fun and pleasure?
IrishGent: I believe both.  Balance is a requirement in SL and to be out of balance you will see a negative effect on both.  That is established early on when you formulate the mission and vision of your business.
Debby Sharma: What mistakes according to you, do you see most virtual business committing to?
IrishGent: The big mistake from my perspective is micro management and not establishing realistic goals.  Remember SL has seasonality with the number of on-line avis.  You have to plan your business to adjust to this seasonality thus not to overestimate earnings to offset expenses.

The following conversation, I had with Sera Bellic, owner of Lick Sim Designs.

Debby Sharma: What are the few pointers that you would suggest a resident before they start a business?
Sera Bellic: Take some time to explore SL and find what you are passionate about.
Debby Sharma: According to your experience, which has been the most difficult time while you started your start up?
Sera Bellic: I have tried many different businesses. I think finding the one I was passionate about was the most difficult. Surprisingly, it was right under my nose.
Debby Sharma: Should a resident start a virtual business with a motive of earning or for a generic motive of fun and pleasure?
Sera Bellic: I think all business should start as something you did or do for fun, just because you love doing it. Then grow it as a business.
Debby Sharma: What mistakes according to you, do you see most virtual business committing to?
Sera Bellic: Not honing their skill, jumping in before really understanding Second Life.

The above interviews might have already given you an idea. Here is a short list of pointers that might be helpful.

·         Idea
Have an idea of what you want to do. If you already have it to your liking, then start by looking at other existing businesses. If possible join them as a staff and learn. It is wrong to imitate a business idea, but it is not wrong to learn from an actual business. May be in future, you may develop an idea along the lines. May be while working, you may have a completely new idea. But, this experience would be useful.

·         Time
It is very important that you have time for such business. Remember, it is a virtual world; although, there are exceptions who have made real money with virtual currency. Still, a business has its clients and clients are the only ones who keep a business steady. To satisfy your client, it is important that you have enough time for them.

·         Research
Although, this is a virtual world, still there are loads of Intellectual Property laws that are prevalent in every country. Read them, be thorough. In my two years of writing career, I have witnessed big business names being sued for real cash. So, it is highly advisable, you must know the laws like the copy right laws etc.

·         Budget and Audience
Prepare your statements, estimates of expenditure and incomes. Like in any real life business, there might me a need of investment, but the amount needs to be justifiable. It is not possible to incur losses for long periods of time. In my 3 years of virtual existence, I have witnessed over 7 businesses closing down due to this. Plot a draft may be, but have something as your spinal cord for the business. Understand who your clients are. Have a list of them ready in your spreadsheets. Even if you started the business for fun, it still needs to raise enough revenue to sustain your dream for long term.

·         Team
No business will ever survive the test of time without a team. It is the most difficult aspect of virtual business. One person can do all the job of a business, virtual or real. Sooner or later, you need another hand and it won’t come free or easy. Hence, the above point is important. By team, it doesn’t mean that you hire many people in your staff. Have as many as required. Have serious, enthusiastic and passionate people who also share your dream. It will be difficult in the start. Sometimes, it takes more than a year to find the right one and sometimes not. With this we come to the last point

·         Patient and Passionate
Be Patient. No business is built in a day. Some of your friends might get lucky and some not. Don’t lose hope. Success will turn eventually. The only thing that will drive you on will be passion. If you were passionate in the first place when the idea immerged, recognition is bound to follow.

I hope these pointers were helpful. If some of my dear readers are wondering, why take advice from a writer, to them I say, it may be just over 3 years in-world, but it includes 9 times failure in virtual writing career and over a dozen failures in trying to set up a successful virtual business. The above pointers are few that I have gathered while learning. Writing did not happen by chance but by a choice.

A Somber Look At The Trace Too

The Trace is a wonderful work by Kylie Jaxxon.  Kylie's way of creating beauty with subtle, simple creations, are beyond compare. The Trace is seasonal, and changes with the seasons,

Visit here.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/The%20Trace%20Too/128/128/0?title=The%20Trace%20Too

In 2014 she informed us all that she had leukaemia, and had to close the trace to take care of herself.  After several chemo sessions, and occasional waves to us on the SL feeds, she announced that her leukaemia was in remission, and that The Trace was returning!  We were all elated, and could not wait for it too open.

The Trace opened (now called The Trace Too) and we flooded in to see.

Sadly now we have not heard from Kylie.  Her SL account is gone as well as her blog, and other websites.  One of her last pictures called "Anchored and Gone"  is here on Flikr https://www.flickr.com/photos/76614164@N02/19044843900/in/dateposted/

We at the spaceport paid the sim's tier up to the 29th of August.

There will be fundraising events for tier at The Commune Utopia, with 14 DJ's on Thursday the 23rd of July.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Orga/20/88/29 and Lagrange Point Spaceport on Sunday the 26th, with a few hours of live music. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Lagrange%20Point/128/128/0?title=Lagrange%20Point  More info on these events to follow.

Trinity Yazamoto informed me that she would hold an art auction at the Trace.  The exhibition should start around the 2nd of august and she’s accepting submissions of photographs or digital artwork featuring The Trace Too from now on. You can IM her in world (no notecards please).
This is also a call out to Kylie's friends to get involved.  If you love Kylie and the Trace please contact me!

We are going to try to keep the Sim open till September the 1st, so you can come to The Trace and remember.  Sadly after that The Trace Too must close so we can keep the Trace safe in our own memories.

So please do come out and visit the lovely Trace Too, and celebrate Kylie's Life with us!"

Shopping For Mesh - Tea Couturier reporting

Mesh…how did we ever survive without it I hear you ask?

As content creators are getting better, it has only made our choices even harder on what to buy and wear.

If you are not sure what is new out or even what is available, never fear here is my list of what I feel is hot for now. However, instead of featuring mesh clothing, I am going to feature mesh for your body, which I feel is becoming popular now.

RiRi Inspired mesh head

I think this is very clever as it looks so life like. If you have ever wanted to look like a famous person then here is your chance. This is a Rihanna inspired mesh head, intended for personal use, whether for avatar appearance or learning. This version of the head is non modifiable and only includes a makeup HUD, including 6 makeup types which I think is very good as it allows you change your look easily.
The content creator does other mesh heads also.
Priced at L$1499

Slink AvEnhance Hands Female – Casual and Slink

AvEnhance Hands Male – Relax

As we all know, Slink make excellent mesh hands and feet, so it would not be surprising to find it in my list of mesh body parts. You can find several female hands with different finger poses, but I picked this one as I felt it had more of a causal feel and look to it for any occasion, but you can purchase which ever you feel works for you.  This is the female hand and they also do male hands.

 Features:
Left and Right hand for mixing hand types.
Works with appliers for Skins, Nails, Gloves, Tattoos
Left and Right Gloves and Tattoo options
Priced L$450

Slink AvEnhance Feet Female Flat

These flat feet will only work with shoes made for Slink Flat Feet. I have picked these as I feel, to me,they look more natural when worn, as your feet are not always on tip toe. Again,  Slink have done an excellent job on these feet and has made my list for mesh body parts.

Price L$675

Slink Physique Mesh Body

This is not a "shape" or a "skin". It is a fitted mesh female body replacement for your SL avatar body. It will work with the included shapes OR your own shape!
You must have at least basic shaders and hardware skinning on for this body to work properly.
I am new to mesh bodies, so have chosen a creator who I know,  and I know there are quite a few stores in SL which create mesh bodies but, to begin with, I think this is a good starting point.
Price L$ 1250

These are just a few mesh body parts you can purchase in SL and I am sure if you are new to mesh body parts then you will have a lot of fun a little tip if a demo if offered purchase the demo first.

Happy Shopping!

Mackenzie's Mumblings: Have I Forgotton How To Have Fun? - Mackenzie Abbot Reporting

So, three years and a bit on Second Life and I’ve settled into a routine.

When I first joined SL, I had no idea what I was doing or, indeed, what I was going to do.  Eventually I found my way and, like most single blokes, decided to explore the sex side first.  I drifted my way around various places, most of which were too full on for my virgin capabilities.  But, somehow, I found a nice little strip club and became friends with the dancers and staff, as well as the various patrons.  Soon, I was doing the horizontal pixel salsa with some of them.  Soon enough, I found DJing and began a whole new career, in a different circle of people, with different outlooks on life.  As my fan group expanded, I came across a BDSM club and began DJing and shagging my way around the staff and VIPs as before.  Eventually I found someone who was, I thought, just right for me and we started dating, eventually partnered and I settled down, away from temptation and all that came with it.

And that, gentle reader, is where I think it all started.

The freebird came home to roost and had his wings clipped.  DJing became a chore rather than pleasure and I ended up selling advertising for the fine publication you are now reading.  I stopped going to clubs and quickly became a frail beige creature with no immediate circle of friends and no inclination to do anything other than check to see which advertisers are due to renew and work out what needs doing at the SLE.  This is my own choice and I enjoy what I do, but it grinds a bit, you know? I became a little disillusioned with SL and quickly found out that I had aged well before my time.  I would rather sit and chat in a skybox somewhere or play table games than go to a club and throw shapes, either solo or with someone.

Mack and Alison, the SLE Ad Assistant.  (She wants me bad)

I have strayed, I will throw my hands up to that.  I cheated twice and ended up having a child with a hostess at a club I used to work at.  It wasn’t something I was proud of but it was the danger, the thrill of maybe getting caught.  However, I never fully appreciated that if my partner ever found out, it would upset her immensely, and it did.  So I have kept away from temptation and buried myself in my work.

In other words, I’ve become boring.

Gone are the days when I could just head off to a club or a sim and just do my own (non-sexual) thing and just be Mack.  The Mackenzie Abbot of old is still in there somewhere, buried under a few layers of elasticated waisted nylon.  So how do I get out of the “drip dry shirt” situation I’m in now and start becoming more “ready to wear”?  I’ve no idea, but you can see my current frame of mind.  I’m comparing myself to shirts, for crying out loud!
Mack has got to the stage of being like an old sheepdog.  The eyes and bowels aren’t what they used to be; he’s maybe a bit whiffy.  A faithful old friend.  Yet, despite all that, you couldn’t shoot him in the face; you just couldn’t.  You just watch him plodding around and getting on with life.  You feel like you should do something yet you can’t.

Maybe I just need to take time out and rediscover what it means to be Mackenzie Abbot again.  Obviously, there couldn’t be sex involved as that’s a big no-no.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t maybe just take myself off to a club or venue and take it all in.  I don’t have to have company all the time; alone time is good too.  Although, sometimes it’s nice to share your down time with someone.  Seeing as, at time of writing, my partner works nights and sleeps during the day, it’s almost never her; so I have to see if my friends have some downtime that they are willing to share with me.  If they do, great!  If not, I’m scuppered and the usual course of action is to log off and do something else, like watch porn.  Trust me, porn solves everything!  Fap Fap! Hooray!  (Sorry!)

The author, having finally lost his mind

So, before I too have to go and work for the man (job starts in 8 days at time of writing), I’ve decided to try and reignite my interest in SL by trying things I hadn’t done before.  Something that might work really well, or fall flat on its face.

But that, dear reader, is for another day.

Time Traveling Through Your Playlist by Linda Lauren

I had a beauty day recently, and my first stop was the hair salon for a splash of fresh color. I usually do this on my day off and I elect the entire day to attend to personal grooming, necessities and errands. The owner of the salon usually has on a favorite station and it happens to be one that I like, too. So the experience of sitting and waiting in the chair while he works becomes an experience in memory recall.

I love music. It stirs emotion and speaks directly to the spirit in ways that range from subtle to empowering. It is a colorful array of sound created through inspiration that we draw upon in our everyday life. Music can bring us down or pick us up. It can remember scenes of the past while creating new ones for the future. Often, we move toward music to embrace awareness and healing.

Sitting in the salon chair listening to music from my teenage years brought forth a flood of emotion and nostalgia that ultimately made me smile. I asked myself the question: what if I created a playlist for the specific purpose of drawing on memories I wanted to fondly recall? Would it be beneficial to my body, mind and spirit? I decided to try it and I garnished surprising results. My mood improved and the time spent in the salon (which is usually over an hour) felt like it was the shortest ever. When I returned home I created my own playlist and I recommend that you give it a try. Here is a way to get started.
  1.  Pick a time of your life that holds the fondest memories.
  2.  Research the songs from that decade and choose the ones that speak happiest to you.
  3.  Create a playlist and loop it to play throughout the day in the order you feel fits how you want to feel.
  4.  Journal or log what surfaces for you.
Granted, you may come away with some sad feelings, but the happy ones will be the strongest, so make sure to keep your focus on the positive. Try it for a few days and see how you feel afterward.

Enjoy, and happy time traveling through your playlist!

CASE STUDIES: Let’s talk about Sex- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

According to the trusty and witty Urban Dictionary, the word sex is defined as “What kind of moron are you that you look up sex in the Urban Dictionary?” More politically correct and bland on dictionary.com (which has better manners I might add) defines sex as “the instinct or attraction drawing one sex toward another, or its manifestation in life and conduct”.

To be more specific, sex is a sexual activity, including specifically sexual intercourse. The act of sexual intercourse and exchange of bodily fluids obviously dates back to the beginning of creation, without getting all biblical and assuming we all came from dust. None of us know exactly where mankind came from but we sure know how to procreate to add to our population on this planet or, at least, practice. To many it is taboo and whispered about and for others they display their sexuality in a very public way. Either way, it is a part of life. And without it none of us would exist.

There is something within us (assuming you are an adult, mature enough to understand the true meaning of sex and all the excitement about it.) We all have that the primal urge to fulfill our most inner desires and reach that point of pure ecstasy.  Sex is amazing with the right person and even more out of this world when you are in love. There are many ways to experiment with it; to find that ultimate trigger that works for each of us sexually active beings.  In order for it to work we have to remember it is a mutual thing between consenting partners and not all about you and your needs. If it is then you have no clue what you are missing.
There is no need to be shy about sex or think it is too dirty to talk about. Once you get over that, you will truly understand why it is such a big deal to so many people, especially in Second Life where imaginations can run wild, shyness and judgments are pushed aside and the real sexually charged animals come out to play. That is why the sex industry is so large in Second Life.
No matter where you go in Second Life you might be faced with pose balls and animations that were created to lure lovers into a more intimate space. Since it is virtual, the act of sex is more a mental stimulation and self-exploratory. Masturbation is a big part of the act but surprisingly, for some, one or the other will not even touch themselves yet still feel satisfaction and mental release. It is an interesting digital age we are in that gives people the option to explore thing they didn’t even know would turn them on.
A big reason for the fear of sex or exploring options is sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. In Second Life those worries are not present so sexual exploration, multiple partners and promiscuity are new and bold options to choose from. Add bi-curiosity, orgies, swinging and BDSM to the mix and you have yourself a never ending Sex-fest.  I will say the art of emoting is a thing to be mastered because a bunch of mmmms, ooohs and ahhhs won’t cut it alone. To make it good, you have to be sync with your partner in writing out your erotic fantasy. And don’t think about cutting and pasting from 50 shades of grey, you can probably write better porn one handed in the middle of an orgasm.
Anyway, since sex is so easy to find in Second Life I decided to go explore the red light district and do some “research” without ending up in a fetal position crying in my shower about what I did with regrets.

Case Study #1= The F*ckery Owner Jaz Mynx

The F*ckery is a popular location for avatars to let go of their inhibitions and explore Sex in SL. I met up with the sole owner of this sex club to get an inside look at his perspective of Sex in SL. You will see just how easily sex can become part of a situation with just a little flirting.
Lanai Jarrico:  Hi Jaz, What inspired you to create the F*ckery?

Jaz Mynx: it’s perhaps the very reason I keep this place. Well first let me say, it would not be here without the help of my close friend Pixie, who built a lot of it. I wanted to have a place where all adults where welcome, felt welcome, found something here that maybe turned them on in some way; I like to think there is something for everyone here.

Lanai Jarrico: Why do you think Sex in SL is such a huge culture?

Jaz Mynx: Well I think it’s very easy. There is no consequence for the most part. You can become whatever you want to become.

Lanai Jarrico: I agree

Jaz Mynx:  I find people have such a varied range of fantasies.  oh you’re such a tease.

Lanai Jarrico: I try

Jaz Mynx: lol

Lanai Jarrico: lol Do you think Sex in SL is fulfilling?

Jaz Mynx: for me personally... only sometimes. I think some people get an enormous release from it most of the time, they come here for that as somehow maybe sex in rl has escaped them and I think that’s great.

Lanai Jarrico: can you elaborate?

Jaz Mynx: for me, I require a little something.... real ... .sometimes, even in sl and that puts some people off… a lot of people actually lol BTW feel free to... you know.... lose some layers...
Lanai Jarrico: sure

Jaz Mynx: did I elaborate enough on that?

Lanai Jarrico: yes but I’m interested more in what realism you are into.

Jaz Mynx: well.... for example. I have gone so far as to meet up with a lady but I think that takes time, understanding, trust and an obvious connection. I’m not here to find dates, don’t get me wrong but... I do not rule it out either. Short of that I would say.... perhaps voice, a way to connect when offline whether that’s kik chat or something like that... of course photo exchange but I feel like men are more visual and want that more often than women....those are just a few examples

Lanai Jarrico: very interesting.

Jaz Mynx: would you like to sit on my lap?

Lanai Jarrico: *sits on his lap* what is it about SL Sex that you like the most?

Jaz Mynx: I think it’s when I feel as if I have made a connection with someone, mentally, intellectually even and I can feel their passion grow with mine...I can feel them needing me in that moment more than anything and it goes beyond simply physical arousal. Because let’s face it, we can all just masturbate alone, right?

 Lanai Jarrico: *nods*

Jaz Mynx: you know what I mean then?

Lanai Jarrico: well this interview has gotten close and personal* clears throat*

 Jaz Mynx: yes it has.

Lanai Jarrico: you made me lose where I was at in my interview lol

Jaz Mynx: I hope that’s ok... it’s one of those things one simply can’t predict or expect but then it gives an amazing energy doesn’t it.

Lanai Jarrico: it sure does and it is quite fun.

Jaz Mynx: it feels great, I’m glad you stopped by

Lanai Jarrico: Sooo where do you see the Sex industry in SL headed if oculus rift becomes a part of it

Jaz Mynx: I don’t want to....undermine your interview at all... but I’m loving having you so close right now. uhm... wow I’m so uninformed on that, you have to tell me what oculus is?

Lanai Jarrico: well oculus rift is that headset viewer with the capabilities of being hands free in Virtual gaming.

Jaz Mynx: oh I see. That sounds like it could enhance the experience to me

Lanai Jarrico: I think it would put a major spin on how people engage in Sex here. Here is something else interesting to have  http://we-vibe.com/we-vibe-4-plus *smiles*

Jaz Mynx: THAT’S SO GREAT!!! I can control a vibe with an app on my phone!!?

Lanai Jarrico: mmhmm anywhere from around the world. Imagine the possibilities of that here lol

Jaz Mynx: fantastic!! When can I send you one!? Yes I see... that certainly offers the possibility of making it all a bit more... interactive

Lanai Jarrico: Ok let’s get back on track. Is there anything else or some advice for people new to sex in SL that you can offer?

Jaz Mynx: lol you’re so good

Lanai Jarrico: good at what hmm?

Jaz Mynx: lol good at staying on task here.  Hmmmm I would just say for people to be patient if they can, they will find what they seek eventually, but people can have such a different idea of how things should be or what they expect here so I would hope people are open minded and patient

Lanai Jarrico: It’s my job :) *climbs off your lap nice and slow* It was quite the pleasure interviewing you.  We should do it again some time.

CASE STUDY # 2- The Keyhole Club Dancer  Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins)
The Keyhole Club has been in Second Life for a few years and caters to sex enthusiasts who like to watch and be watched. Entertainment includes a porn theater, sex rooms with window peepshow views, a strip club and a shopping mall for all your sexy clothing and accessory needs. Traffic is high day and night and its apparent management this sex venue doing something right.  I interviewed dancer  Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins) about his perspective of the Sex Industry in Second Life.

Lanai Jarrico:  Dr. Pappa, what inspired you to become a Keyhole Dancer?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): I wanted to work here because it’s the best

Lanai Jarrico: you mean the best sex club in SL?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): the friendliest club period. That’s what it’s about.... making connections.

Lanai Jarrico: Why do you think Sex in SL is such a huge culture?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): I can give you two reasons...... you get to be someone in a perfect body of your own creation... so sex of course is going to come up.... and there is a large group of people here who for whatever reason -disability- work etc...... Can’t get what they need elsewhere.

Lanai Jarrico: you bring up a very good point, it is about possible rl restrictions and having the freedom here without judgment.

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): well some people come here to do kinks (as well as lots of non sexual things) that they can’t do in "real life” and fear of judgment is certainly one of those things. Like if the real me was on this pole Id get booed off the stage lol

Lanai Jarrico: lol. What is it about dancing that you like the most?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): getting paid money to have girls ogle me and take off my clothes?? I like everything about that! LOL

Lanai Jarrico:  Fair enough. What are the majority of your patrons mostly into?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): oh goodness they run the gamut for sure... I would have to say there are women who like a handsome man appreciate them for who they are. Other than that, it’s hard to put them in a box.

Lanai Jarrico: True, everyone has their own preferences so I can see it being difficult to group them in specific sex interest categories. If you engage in SL sex do you find it fulfilling?

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): yes I do... but in a different way than actual sex :)

Lanai Jarrico: can you elaborate?

[08:49] Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): It’s more like directing your own porn movie than being IN the porn movie lol

Lanai Jarrico: Interesting perspective of it.

Rev. Dr. Pappa Hiddenshoes (drrwatkins): this suggestion is NOT a come on.... but if writing this article you really should try it with someone

CASE STUDY #3- Anonymous Freelance Escort
Landing an escort had to be the most difficult of all the subjects I interviewed. They are very hush hush and do not want to speak to media. However I did manage to get a few answers out of one escort who disappeared in the middle of the interview. She asked to remain anonymous. It is understandable that sex workers aren’t too willing to talk to the press. Many wish to remain anonymous for a variety of personal reasons. What I did find out is this particular escort decided to be a sex worker for the Lindens and when asked why she thought the sex industry was so huge in Second Life, she replied, “maybe because the men can't have someone in rl and it's easier on here”.  She also shared that what she liked most about her job was that it was pleasing and then again emphasized it was for the Lindens.

CASE STUDY # 4- A Male Perspective

This particular participant does not speak for every male in Second life who engages in virtual sex. But it gives some insight on sex from a male perspective who has been actively involved in the Second Life community for over 8 years.

Lanai: How long have you been in Second Life and do you engage in sex in Second Life?

Male: I have been in SL since 12/02/2007....and I engage in sex sporadically.

Lanai: How many partners have you had?

Male: I can’t answer that. I don’t know an exact number. Over 15 approximately

Lanai: Do you have any specific kinks, preferences or fetishes?

Male: I’m more into the D/s thing.....

Lanai: What is it about SL Sex that you like the most? Is it fulfilling?

Male: I guess what I like about it is that...1. It’s easy- if you have decent avatar and a good personality. It’s not a problem to get sex. 2. Its anonymous - you can explore kinks that you normally wouldn’t be able to explore in RL 3. Its disease free - self explanatory

Lanai: Is it just sex to you or have your experiences been meaningful?

Male: is it fulfilling? for me?.... sometimes...but usually no. because it’s still only masturbation...... and you can’t hold someone after....you can’t "feel" them...it’s cold most of the time. Its glorified masturbation. Its depends on who you’re with....in regards to it being meaningful.

Lanai: Why do you think Sex in SL is such a huge culture?

Male: Because sex in RL is such a huge culture... add anonymity to that...mix in some creativity, imagination and the human condition.....and a computer and you got SL sex culture.

CASE STUDY # 5 Female Perspective
This female participant was a character but very forthcoming about her sexual prowess. She has never been involved in stripping or escorting but shared her personal sex life in Second Life because she enjoys the thrill of intense sexual encounters. Her perspective does not reflect on all women in Second Life but makes a great point about how it makes her feel and why she engages in virtual sex.

Lanai: How long have you been in Second Life and do you engage in sex in Second Life?

Female: I have been in second life for 5 years off and on and I love the freedom of exploring my sexuality anonymously.

Lanai: How many partners have you had?

Female: I have been with over 12 different partners. Some of them were relationships and some were one night stands.

Lanai: Do you have any specific kinks, preferences or fetishes?

Female: Yes, I am into the bad boy look. I love tattoos and piercings. I also like men who pay attention to detail and have sexy avatars that are proportionate and a sense of style. I am not into bdsm but I do enjoy rough sex with a mix of sensual passionate lovemaking.

Lanai: What is it about SL Sex that you like the most? Is it fulfilling?

Female: I like the thrill of making him aroused and knowing that he is pleasuring himself. That arouses me. It can be fulfilling because it is very mentally stimulating to a point but there is always that need for physical stimulation from a man. Masturbation alone doesn’t make the act complete.

Lanai: Is it just sex to you or have your experiences been meaningful?

Female: It depends on my mood or if I am in a relationship. When I am dating someone, it is intense and meaningful but I lose interest if we have virtual sex too much. I like the thrill of exploring different fantasies and it excites me to be with someone new. When it is a one night stand it is just sex but still mentally stimulating.

Lanai: Why do you think Sex in SL is such a huge culture?

Female: I think sex is popular in second life because everyone has the ability to explore different things that they might not be courageous enough to do in real life or fear things like std’s or unplanned pregnancies. Also, it can be exciting to explore multiple sexual partners if they have been in a long term marriage and need something more, have problems finding someone, shyness or never got the chance to experience different people. I can’t speak for every woman who has sex in second life but I think all women want to feel beautiful and wanted and second life gives us a chance to feel that.

Collective Case Study Conclusion

These case studies provided an insight from various perspectives as to why Sex in Second life is so popular. The most common reason is the freedom to explore various sexual experiences anonymously. For sex workers Lindens are a factor but the thrill of these sexual encounters is stimulating but does not provide complete fulfillment. In a sense sex in Second Life is interactive porn in a safe environment unless participants take it to the next level and actually meet in real life for the physical part.

For safety reasons it is not recommended to explore real sexual encounters with people you meet on the internet unless you have established a trusting long term relationship, confirmed the person is who they say they are and it doesn’t compromise your real life situation or your personal safety.
