Sansar democratising VR as a creative medium - Lacy Muircastle reporting...

Time and tide wait for no man, or avatar in this instance and Linden Lab have been beavering away for a while now (or in other words developing) a new platform for creating social VR experiences.  It is due for public release in early 2017.

“When you have a great and difficult task, something perhaps almost impossible, if you only work a little at a time, every day a little, suddenly the work will finish itself.”  Isak Dinesen

It’s with this tenacity that the team at Linden Lab who are working on the Sansar Project have applied themselves.

Yesterday Wednesday August 31, 2016 - Linden Lab® announced that the first invitations to the Sansar™ Creator Preview were being sent out this week. Select applicants will be invited to create their own social VR experiences within the new platform, slated for public release in early 2017.

It would appear that Sansar is now the official title of the new VR platform and the URL for the Sansar website has been updated to – www.Sansar.com.

According to Linden Lab Sansar will democratise VR as a creative medium. It will empower people to easily create, share, and ultimately monetise their own interactive social experiences that can be enjoyed in VR with head-mounted displays like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, as well as via PCs and, later, other platforms. Sansar enables professional-level quality and performance, while also solving the complex engineering challenges that have previously made creating and publishing social VR experiences an extremely complex and costly endeavour.

“Since opening applications for our Creator Preview, more than 6,500 people have applied to use Sansar to create their own social VR experiences,” said Bjorn Laurin, VP of Product at Linden Lab. “To start, we’re inviting a select group of creators whose skills and projects are the best fit for Sansar’s capabilities today. As the platform matures, we’ll continue inviting more and more creators up until public release early next year. Feedback from this early community will help us improve the platform, and they’ll create a range of incredible social VR experiences that everyone can enjoy at Sansar’s public release.”

To apply to the Sansar Creator Preview programme, visit www.Sansar.com.

Along with the press release, the lab have also opened a Flickr account for Sansar.  There are not many images available yet, but it will be a window into the progress of the look and feel of Sansar as it develops.

Through our efforts in supporting Making Strides, we nurture these seeds and they blossom into a world with hope of a world of better treatments, early diagnosis and less loss from breast cancer."

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Across Second Life raises money for The American Cancer Society and is part of Relay For Life of Second Life.

October 29 Strides Walk starts at 10 a.m. SLT
October 30 Honor Ball for Survivors & Caregivers

An exciting change for this year’s Strides walk is that we would like the walkers to reach out to their friends in SL and if you like real life to get sponsors for your walk.   The sponsors would agree that for every lap you walk they will pay a certain amount  to you as a donation.  The more sponsors you have the more you can raise for MSABC! Special awards will be given to top fundraisers.

Please contact Leala or Sandie in Second Life if you would like to get involved with the 2016 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer season in Second Life.

About Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2016 are:
About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed
About 440 men will die from breast cancer
Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years.

About Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer or MSABC is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 300 communities to finish the fight. Every breast cancer walk and event is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about what we can do to reduce our breast cancer risk, and race money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with research, information, services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.

About The American Cancer Society:
For more than 100 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well, help people get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.

The 2016 Sunburst Premier Grid Ent. Caribbean Carnival Returns for Its 7th Year.

Sunburst Premier Grid Entertainment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shon Larsson, Owner/CEO, Co-Owner Break Beatz Entertainment
Monday, August 29, 2016
As Labor Day in the U.S. gets closer we expect summer vacations to come to an end, schools to be back in session, and the fall season to be right around the corner.  One unexpected event is about to happen as well.  After six years of an August date, the Sunburst Premier Caribbean Carnival is making its 7th year return on Saturday, September 3, 2016.  The largest Caribbean Carnival celebration on Second Life, this event has been anticipated by residents since its inception in 2008.

Unfortunately in 2015, the carnival was cancelled due to other important obligations.  At that time I knew I wanted to bring it back the following year and here we are.  Also returning for its 2nd year, Latin Heat, “The hottest night of the year”.  This pre-carnival event on Friday, September 2, 6-8pm slt is to acknowledge and celebrate the Latin Culture in the Caribbean.  The DeeJay for this event is DJ Spice (Spiceme Fanizza), the Sensual Latina of Break Beatz Ent. in her 2nd year, bringing that salsa, meringue, reggaeton heat and whatever else she has simmering.

Latin Heat will be held for the first time at the legendary Cruiz Cotton Club.  Thank you to Cruiz & Starlaa Boa Control for allowing me the opportunity to host the event at your venue.  The Control’s have sponsored the Caribbean Carnival consistently for the past five years.  For the 7th anniversary of the Caribbean Carnival we have a lineup of four great DeeJays.  One important mainstay of this event is that all of the music is provided by DeeJays with direct ties to, or are from the Caribbean.  There are three DeeJays: DJ Cinfull (Cinfull Vixen), DJ Vixen (Suzie Coba), and DJ Kamaria (Mrs. Badger) from Break Beatz Entertainment (BBE) participating in this annual event for the first time, and DJ IDJGrock returning for his second year.  The Hosts for this event are Zariaunna Madeye and Nomi Loven both highly experienced BBE staff members. The location of this year’s carnival will be on the Palm Bay Estates Beach.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Hype/208/93/22

The carnival contests have returned as well with random prizes, great sponsor prizes, and cash prizes for Best Caribbean costume, Best Crew in Caribbean costumes (3 or more in a crew), and King & Queen of carnival.

Year after year I am very appreciative to the sponsors who support and participate in this event.  This, the 7th year is no exception.  I want to thank all of the following sponsors for registering for this year’s event.  Without your generosity and support I wouldn’t be able to sustain this event year after year.  On behalf of the Break Beatz Ent. staff and management as well as our business partners, we thank you for helping us continue to bring quality entertainment to the SL grid.

Inspired by the 19th Century Victorian era, The Afterhours Shopping District takes you back in time with its stunning cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture and vintage atmosphere. It is comprised of 40 shops including jewelry makers, fashion boutiques, furniture’s shops and more.  Owned and operated by á´€lbá´€ ᴋʜᴀи™ and her team this masterfully designed shopping district is a new charm on the Second Life grid and a must see on your shopping Itinerary.

The SL Enquirer sat down with á´€lbá´€ ᴋʜᴀи™ (asuquitar) to learn more about the Afterhours Shopping District and what to expect.

Interview with á´€lbá´€ ᴋʜᴀи™ (asuquitar)

Hi Alba, congratulations on your pending Grand Opening of The Afterhours Shopping District! I took a tour and it is stunning. What activities do you have planned?

Alba: First of all I want to give thanks to SLE for inviting us for this interview. we are trying our best to give our store owners and shoppers a great environment where they can do shopping and selling in a fair way .There will be some events specially for our store owners apart from that main event .

There are many shopping districts in SL, what impressed me about Afterhours Shopping District was how neatly organized it is for those who love to shop. In your opinion, what sets this shopping district apart from the rest?

Alba: What makes us different from other shopping districts is the environment that we have, a Victorian theme which take us back to the old times architecture and landscapes and it feels like escaping out of hectic daily life into such picturesque sim. The team worked so hard building the sim, it is like a home to us and that way we welcoming and treating the store owners and shopper like our family. Our priority is to provide a stage where the designer can show the world how talented they are and for that we are charging almost nothing.

The sim is beautifully designed, what was your inspiration behind The Afterhours Shopping District?

Alba: As I said earlier it is inspired by Victorian age. I am in love with that period of time because of it's style and way of life. For example the name of streets and squares are inspired by that period and the coffee house which is best place for socializing. Over all you will find highlights of that period in everything which is in AFTERHOURS.

I love the cobblestone streets and the buildings. The Bakery. Café is a sweet touch. It is pleasant to explore, did you design the sim yourself or do you have a team?

Alba: I brought the idea to the team, explaining everything and each detail I wanted. All members of the team worked hard to bring that idea into life .I am really proud of them.

There are over 40 shops available. Can you name drop on some of the designers and businesses that can be found there?

Alba:Yes sure we have many good designers and businesses for example Ascend ,Qposes , VG shoes ,187 Boutique, M&M, E Inc, Noir ,Pukka , B Bos and Silvermoon etc.

Will you be hosting special events and entertainment? If so, what can shoppers expect?

Alba: Yes of course we will organize event and entertainment programs for our shoppers and store owners. After all we are here just because of them. There will be two kind of events; one monthly event in which every designer of SL is welcome to participate after fulfilling certain conditions. The other event will be arranged specially for our store owners .We are sure our shoppers are going to have great shopping experience because we are providing them 2 events in a month which will give them chance to buy exciting and new things in a good price  and of course  there will be parties organize on timely intervals.

Do you have shop space available to rent? If so, is there a criteria shopkeepers must meet in order to have a shop at The Afterhours Shopping District?
Alba: Right now our stores are fully booked, thanks to our team. In the future we are thinking to increase the numbers of shops. There is no such requirement to rent a shop in After Hours Shopping District. This is also one of the thing that differs us from others similar sims.

Are you hiring for any administrative positions?
Alba: Our team is perfect for now but if we feel like to increase number of staff we will be giving an advertisement for sure.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers about The Afterhours Shopping District?
Alba: After Hours is not only a business place for me but also it is a home to me which is built by my amazing team with their hard work and dedication. Every one is always welcome in After Hours and our support staff will always around to assist you. Please visit us and give us the opportunity to serve you with love and respect

GeekSpeak - is it possible to understand distant or ancient cultures? Join the discussion Saturday, August 27th @ 12pm SLT

Does our western, modern frame of mind hinder our understanding of other cultures?  Can we grasp their art, their literature, their philosophy or their ethics?  Can we understand how they view the world and the place of humans in it?

Some cultures do not distinguish between left and right, some have no words for yes or no.  It is said that if you want to understand an Eskimo you need to learn twelve different names for snow.

Ancient cultures took slavery for granted and saw human sacrifice as a good.  Their values when we read about them in ancient texts are sometimes incomprehensible.  Or do you think all cultures more than a hundred years old are incomprehensible?  Are even Victorian books strange to us now?

Should we try to understand all cultures?  Or is it impossible?  Can we ever know why Stonehenge was built, can we understand how the Japanese see the world?
Come and discuss past and present cultures in GeekSpeak.
