GeekSpeak - is it possible to understand distant or ancient cultures? Join the discussion Saturday, August 27th @ 12pm SLT

Does our western, modern frame of mind hinder our understanding of other cultures?  Can we grasp their art, their literature, their philosophy or their ethics?  Can we understand how they view the world and the place of humans in it?

Some cultures do not distinguish between left and right, some have no words for yes or no.  It is said that if you want to understand an Eskimo you need to learn twelve different names for snow.

Ancient cultures took slavery for granted and saw human sacrifice as a good.  Their values when we read about them in ancient texts are sometimes incomprehensible.  Or do you think all cultures more than a hundred years old are incomprehensible?  Are even Victorian books strange to us now?

Should we try to understand all cultures?  Or is it impossible?  Can we ever know why Stonehenge was built, can we understand how the Japanese see the world?
Come and discuss past and present cultures in GeekSpeak.

GeekSpeak SL: Are we justified in spending money on space? Join the Discussion Saturday, March 19th at 12pm SLT

There are so many unsolved problems on earth.  Should we fix those first before we attempt to go to space?  Or will space exploration save mankind?

Some think that no money or time should be spent on space while there are people in need here.  How much are we going to waste before we realise that Earth is our only home?

Others think that we will gain a lot from going to space.  There are mineral resources out there that we could use and space exploration will encourage an interest in science.  We should spread out into the universe.  Faith in a future for our species on all the planets of the galaxy may be what we need to put things right down here.

If we cancel space programs will other countries take over?  Or private companies?  Maybe we should leave it to them.

Come join the discussion at GeekSpeak in Second Life and tell us which side you take.

Geek Speak SL: If (or when?) Second Life disappears what will you do? Discussion March 5th at 12pm SLT

Strong communities have formed in SL, people who would never have found each other in RL have become good friends in SL.  Some of us, for various reasons, find meeting people and enjoying life easier in SL than in RL.

What will happen to us as SL residents when Second Life is replaced by Project Sansar or when LL goes bankrupt?  Will you give up living in a virtual world and return to RL?

Or will you move to another virtual world?  Will that feel like moving to another country, or another universe, where all the rules are different? Will SL communities form again in other worlds?  Will you be the same person?  Is it time for a 'universal avatar' so that you can always be the same person in any world?  Should we start preparing now for the end of SL?  How would we prepare?  By making mailing lists?

Come and talk to us about the first great virtual refugee crisis on the internet.

Join host Erik Goff for a discussion on these questions.

Cheshyr's Landing- Allen Eppenberger Reporting...

If you’re like me, you kind of use a “click it and see where it takes me” approach to Second Life.  On this particular day, I was in a Sci Fi mood and did a search and came up with the usual suspects.  A couple of links in and I came across a place called Novatech HQ & Sci-Fi Mall.

THE STAR TREK SAGA CONTINUES IN NEW ERIDANI SL SHOWCASE - Troy Aristocarnas Reporting...

Beam Me Up Scotty

The Star Trek Museum of Science, established in-world by Sabri Picard in 2006, remains at full throttle (if not at warp speed), though it has moved to a single island in-world. “We downsized last year (2011),” said Wabisabi Matahari, the museum’s curator and Benevolent Dictator. “No more room,” she added when this deadline beater inquired about the model starships that were part of the original exhibit. “(It) just got way too expensive and donations dried up,” the amiable dictator revealed.
