Behind the Scenes with Boris Twist- Debby Sharma Reporting...

Credits: Boris Twist
Boris Twist walks the virtual worlds among the famous. Although he is one of the top photography and machinima artists, he is humble at heart. His works speaks the words of constant improvement for perfectionism. He has studied from the University of Cincinnati College – Conservatory of music. He is a musician and pianist at Saint Francis of Assist Portland Oregon. His love for music has translated his passion in virtual life as well. One can listen to his piece at https://soundcloud.com/boristwist

Debby Sharma: You are one of the most renowned artists in Second Life. When did you start as a photography artist?
Boris Twist: I've been in SL for 4 years 6 months. I remember thinking way back will I last that long, in the second year of crossing the boundary into Second Life I began to realize the many approaches everyone had to life here, not merely as a social forum and all the amazing wonderful things in SL were built by it's residents. It would take time and practice but I knew that some part of my musical life needed find this place too. And that's how and when it started building skills, mesh skills, photo skills, many third-party software skills. Along the way I went to classes, talked to artists, builders and architects, Filmmakers and Scripters. It takes time.

Credits:Boris Twist

Debby Sharma: Please tell us something more about yourself and your work in Second Life.
Boris Twist: The back story is when I was new in SL, my God! I could barely understand anything, let alone talk to anybody.  SL made an enormous impression me, I found out about it watching a friend do a live show here in Portland including collaboration in real-time with a dance troupe in SL all on a big screen as part of the stage. Those first months were a life changer. While I'm good at telling this story in many ways and words let me just say there was a point I found myself in SL, with balance, understanding, calm... in other words I made enough boo-boos, got trapped in my own embarrassing situations and climbed out enough to feel the “been there, done that” transcendence.
I remember looking at the Edit Box!  WTF! This feels so uninteresting and what's it for? Sure I can build a cube.  What now?  Do I sit on it?
I've never wanted to work “at” or in Second Life, although I admire the ones that do, including many of my friends. I'm a loner driven to build, create in anyway, that releases my formal background as a musician. Conservatory training and concertizing, my teachers all asked me to listen, to other students, to listen to myself too, one of the harder things for a student to learn is how to be alone in a practice room and make progress without turning off the ear. It applies to all the Arts. SL challenges me to take it's tools and find a way to sooth my soul in crafting something beautiful or grotesque, something that lingers, that pleases me.

Debby Sharma: Your photographs tell a story. When you take a photograph, do you think of a particular theme or does it all happen in a flow?

Boris Twist: Well with photos if that's the Viewer's choice, probably yes. I'm not thinking consciously how that happens. It may go back to lessons, and how we tell a story in the melody or harmony. Question and answer. It's a little tip to a student who needs a bit more in the performance.  And yes (laughs) I am a story teller. I always try to tell a story when I play. SL has allowed me to create one of the best concert grands ever in mesh and make performable in-world.

Credits: Boris Twist

Debby Sharma: During the SL11B, I came to know that you are the one who are the quickest in taking pictures and making a video. What is the secret behind it?

Boris Twist: Looking back . . . probably excitement. Job specific. If it's brand new to me, then I do a bunch of mistakes and organize the flow, redo, until I have it all built into a macro in my brain. This includes organizing content on your hard drive. And there's probably a better way, when someone teaches me how. The mistakes make you learn, true in RL, true here in SL.

The real me never rushes, when I do there is always something I miss. I think we all get that.

I've noticed over the last year of posting films that there's a need in me to perform, to get it out there, to reap the glory, just like standing on stage after you have just performed. Each film needs to be better technically, better focused. In post-production you need to take time to listen to it, watch it, let it grow. You'll know when it's ready.

Debby Sharma: Did you always wanted to be a Mechanima artist?

Boris Twist: No, I had no clue I would like this so much. I think it made me improve my social skills, which is still up for debate. There are several parts to it. While it can lead you anywhere, you must gather source material. We formed a small group on Face Book of devoted souls and artists, who talk and meet up for projects. Joseph Nussbaum in SL is amazing at this, as a producer of film, composer of music, and as an organizer, I've learned a tremendous amount from just hanging out. After sourcing you may have 65GB or more of data to sort though, I watch it all. You decide what's in and what's out. Editing it into a form, writing the music, many hours and weeks of work depending on the size, and I'm just immersed in it, loving it all.

My latest project, working with Colin Bell for Poetic content, and Joesph Nussbaum for scoring, plus a great cast of talented people: “Sortie” A Film for the Holidays, a film of the beautiful dark. Filmed on location beneath the streets of Paris in Second Life.

credit: Boris Twist

Debby Sharma: Do you visit any other virtual world? If so, which are they and what do you do there?

Boris Twist: I've done that, tried a few of the offerings, but no, I'm not comfortable.

Debby Sharma: What are your future goals?

Boris Twist: To lose about 50 lbs, use my new juicer, and get back in pool. :)

Debby Sharma: Would you like to say anything to your fans and friends who appreciate your work?

Boris Twist: Of Course!.. Those of you in the Dance and Sway film group, we rule. Yays to Bianca Xavorine, Walter Gedenspire, Joesph Nussbaum, Tomais Ashdene, Ginger, Stephano, Elleonna, Holter, Joanna, Wolfgang . . . you make me smile.  To the Madonna in Second Life group, Sasha, Gina, Antinodorus, Aloe, Krystal . . . you are all amazing! To my friends on FB, thank you indeed for your support and comments. It's wonderful to hear from you.

Debby Sharma: If given a chance, would you make tutorials for new young artists?
Boris Twist: It's what I've done for over 40 years in RL, so yes. I love a chance to either teach or tutor. :) I may think about this as a goal for 2015. Great question!

Machinima in Second Life - Piers Diesel Reporting

Machinima is digital video production in a virtual world or video game environment. You can find these types of productions featured on Youtube or Vimeo. The creativity is endless and provides a glimpse into the virtual world and the many things it has to offer.

In Second Life, the world of Machinima is still going strong and flourishing. It is always interesting to see what new video have been created by well know or new and upcoming creators and what inspires their work.

Rysan Fall

Rysan Fall is one of the first Machinima Artists in Second Life.  His talents include voice over work, virtual wedding videos, tutorials and award winning short film projects such as The Invisible City, about the homeless.   His work provokes emotion and provides a very creative and genuine look into what Machinima really is. Rysan is also The SL Enquirer official commercial producer.

Piers: Rysan, How long have you been creating Machinima?

Rysan: I have to explain that I taught myself most of everything I know about editing video. I found a unique way to help myself learn the principals of filming and editing video.  There's an online community called "second life" where people live out certain aspects of their lives in a virtual world.  Second life has its own monetary system, using a currency called "lindens" which could be transferred over to actual USD dollars. People have businesses, have relationships and make money in this virtual world.
The word “Machinima” or “Machine Cinema” was created to name videos or films created in a virtual environment.

This initially was intended to be practice for real life film making. When I started I had no idea there was a whole genre of film making dedicated to filming in a virtual environment. My videos became popular in the machinima community, which really was a surprise to me. I decided to offer my skills to business, creating commercials and making keepsake (wedding) videos for the people in this virtual environment.  My desire to make more detailed machinima films grew, and real life film making kind of took a back seat. But I wanted to take what I’ve learned and put it to real life film.

Piers: What inspires your work and how has it enriched your life?

Rysan:  Machinima has been very good to me, and I am very grateful for everything it’s given me. I’ve been interviewed countless times, I’ve spoke at many lectures, events and universities. I’ve had the opportunity to work for Tufts University, University of Florida, and the University of Central Missouri. I’ve even been honored with filming the first Virtual College Graduation ceremony for Bryant Stratton College in Second Life featured on FOX National News. One thing I was really excited about, I was contacted by U2's Principle Management to inform me that my U2inSL video was selected to be played on the big screen at the Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. as the REAL U2 perform their song, "Even Better Than the Real Thing".  My visuals went through the approval processes from Linden Labs to me and finally approved by U2's Principle Management. That was really exciting for me. I’ve been interviewed for The Book “Machinima: The Art and Practice of Virtual Filmmaking.  A few of my videos was seen by a company called How2Connect.com, which specializes in providing online therapy and EAP solutions for subscribers. They were in the process of creating their own virtual world at the time, and wanted someone to make their machinima for them. They flew me to California for a week and asked me to become a part of their team, and I accepted. After 4 years I, now edit all of their “Real Life” department  video. They are now called 1virtualhealth.com

Along with all of this, I do voice over work also. I have also done some radio. I used to have a weekly hip hop news segment on an underground hip hop show called “The Fireset” on 90.7 WTCC. I am now currently doing VO work for CPTV sports.  I’ve just stated working in the creative services dept. for FOX News in CT.

This video is very cleverly done with attention to detail. It provokes real emotion and creates a bridge between reality and virtual expression. Rysan has shown that his work is his passion.

Bryn Oh

Bryn work was has always intrigued me. Bryn attention to detail is second to none and the work that they put into each video is not only inspiring but also captivates the audience to wont to watch more of their work.
Piers: Bryn, How long have you been creating Machinima?

Bryn: I have been working in Machinima for 6 years now

Piers: What inspires your work and how has it enriched your life?

Bryn:  I used to have them on a site called Blip but then they deleted my account for some reason, but many are still on YouTube.  https://www.youtube.com/user/BrynOhMy work is a form of diary where I take elements within my life and tell them as loose narratives, sometimes as poetry.  It is cathartic I think, simply a way to express honest feelings anonymously in a virtual space which would, perhaps, be hurtful to say to family and friends otherwise.  It enriches my life in that I am able to be creative as well as be able to express deeply felt emotions which may not come out as readily in other mediums.  For me it is also rewarding to know that there are those who associate on some level to those same feelings I express in my work.  Sometimes you release things to the void of the internet and much like a message in a bottle it simply disappears out to sea, other times a bottle returns and it is that moment which I cherish.

Not the newest of work by Bryn but the cinematography is perfect to me. Short yet excellently executed.

jjccccc: I have been making them for years since 2006 so

Piers: What inspires your work and how has it enriched your life?

jjccccc: My inspiration comes from the Love  of Art. I make videos to try stuff out they may look crappy and badly arranged but each one is a learning curve of different ideas, So far I don’t think I’ve made a really descent video but I continue to try

Sophia Yates
Sophia Yates Machinima Film Productions is a Virtual Production company she has ha created within the 3D Virtual World of Second Life. This is a new channel as Sophia is not able to log into her original account. She is a business woman also she is owner of  FilmStrip,Profile Magazine Today, Photographer and Publisher, so a lady of many talents.

Machinima is an art form and an outlet for expression.  It takes creativity, time and passion to produce a film that holds the attention of an audience. There is so much more put into it then pressing record and capturing whatever appears before the lens.
Planning begins with creating a storyline, script, scouting for actors, environments and paying attention to details such as lighting, audio, transitions and timing. These are just a few of the things that Machinima producers must take into consideration. So the next time you watch a Machinima video that might only be 4 minutes long, realize that it may have taken them weeks or even months to create.
These are just a few of the talented Machinima artists you will find across the grid. There are others which you may feel have been missed out in this feature. If you know a Machimina artist that should be recognized by the SL Enquirer, share their information below in the comment box with a link to their work!

Digital Rabbit Hole-“Window On A Train” ~ Our Entry For The UWA Vl Machinima Challenge 2013 ~

We needed a train!
Not just any old train, but a 1970′s Diesel Train, detailed and very real looking inside and out. Nat and I scoured every train-store, Marketplace train offering in SL, and could not find what we wanted. One of the reasons I think our production took as long as it did (close to 5 months) was finding that illusive train. So being hopeful, even while we were being  disappointed, “I heard so and so made a train for so and so” and finding all leads running into dead ends, we decided to build a track and maybe..”The train would come.”

Lights! Camera! Action!; Machinima in Second Life –Sarahelisabeth Brenham Reporting…

Have a burning passion to make movies? Here is your VIP pass to go behind the scenes with one of SL's famous videographer's and learn about this growing field.

We all have a voice. Each individual decides for him or herself on the best way to express their opinion. For those who love filmed productions, but prefer to be behind the lens, instead of in front of it, you may find that being a videographer is the best way for you to tell the world all of your thoughts.
In Second Life, one can share their views on everything in mediums that aren’t available in Real Life and vice versa. The processes in filming something in RL and in SL are quite different from each-other. Until today, I didn’t know how to tape anything in either realm, but I had the good fortune in meeting and talking with Rysan Fall; a popular machinist in Second Life.

Watch live streaming video from themachinimaexpo at livestream.com

This week saw the end of the Machinima Expo - The famous and highly renowned 3 day virtual film festival. The ceremony took place in Secondlife, and featured over 12 hours of groundbreaking film screenings, all created using virtual reality.

Pooky Amsterdam was asked to be this years Programming Chair, explaining on her website that...

"....This year we took a theme for the Expo that would reflect what is important as we move forward. In this decade of increased awareness on all levels of the Entertainment industry on the value and validity of games, "Let's Get Real" is what we chose. Let's Get Real means, in game engine film making, a celebration of the craft of machinima film making (which is something the Expo has been doing since 2008 by the way) and the exploration of where, how, what and why we are getting better and bigger all the time. For Immediate Release: “The Twilight Sim: It’s a Bloomin’ Halloween!” Premiere in Second Life and on YouTube -October 26, 2012 Time: 6:30 PST

Place: LEA Theater in Second Life

When four curious teens decide to enter the spooky house on the hill, is it a frightening dream or a hilarious nightmare? Either way, the eyes have it.

Running Lady Studios, (RLS) which brought you the comedy/thriller “Cruise Control”,  and Virtual Girl Productions’ (VGP) are teaming up again.  Last year they brought you the hilarious "Coffee Schlock with AJ - Special Guest, Harold Camping”.   This year, they have a cooked up a special
little treat for your Halloween goodie bags: “The Twilight Sim:  It’s a Bloomin’ Halloween!”
The animated short, filmed on Linden Lab’s Second Life game platform, was penned by professional stage and screen actress Gameela Wright (AvaJean Westland in Second Life) and directed by K. DaVette See (Suzy Yue in Second Life).  The film pokes gentle fun at Halloween tropes and pop culture icons while following the antics of four teens, a mad scientist, and a trio of precocious
little girls.  The hills have eyes, but they are REALLY cute eyes.
