May 15th - Mark Taylor & Maribol Inshan DEBUT LIVE at Terry's Sunday Showcase

Join us on Sunday, May 15th beginning at 12 pm noon SLT for Terry's Sunday Showcase, sponsored by the SL Enquirer!  This week's special guest is Mark Taylor!

Debuting at Terry's this week, Mark has been a real life singer and acoustic guitarist for over 2 decades. He has a unique voice that grabs you and brings you into the music he is singing.  Mark can sing virtually everything from ballads to love songs and of course rock and roll.

Seen frequently performing on SL at the German jams, Mark's only intention is that when you leave his show you know you have seen a true performer.

Following Mark at 1 pm SLT, Terry's Sunday Showcase continues with a special LIVE performance from the amazing Maribol Inshan!

Also performing her debut at Terry's this week, Maribol is led to music and expression by what touches her heart and spirit, which can be anything from Patsy Cline to Lana Del Rey or  the Bee Gees to Robbie Williams or Adele to Melissa Etheridge.

The one constant you'll always find at Mari's show is passion and something a little sultry. The world is filled with beautiful things, which all influence her into creating a spectacular performance.

Come support live music with friends, laughter and a whole lot of fun...ONLY at Terry's Place!!!

Spotlight on Scotch & Soda- An Experiential NFT project in Second Life - SLE REPORTING

NFTs are non-fungible tokens and are non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain that can be sold and traded. In early 2021, interest in NFTs skyrocketed after a number of high-profile sales auctions netted digital artists hundreds of thousands of dollars. The highest amount paid for an NFT was The Merge bought by 28,983 collectors for a total of almost $100 million!  It was only a matter of time before residents of Second Life would showcase NFT art.

Scotch and Soda Gallery is an Experiential NFT project that showcases established and emerging NFT artists in a mixed reality setting. Scotch and Soda is the culmination of two people's drive and passion for something more than hanging art as a display. Art is to be experienced. Second life is arguably one of the first metaverses of its kind and it was fitting for Scotch and Soda to open its first virtual reality 3D experiential gallery in that world. The gallery currently has three experiential installations open featuring Dark Pinkup, StarCards, and Ultra Rare.

Interview with Scotch (scotch.darkheart)

SLE: HI Scotch, you are the first Second Life resident who approached us with an in-world NFT art gallery! Can you tell our readers about Scotch & Soda NFT Gallery and what types of artwork you currently have showcased?

Scotch: We feature a multitude of art stylings most notable are the artists that I have been working with for a few years now such as Starcards, Ultrarare, Exit Limbo and the newly added Dark Pinup. We also intend to host upcoming artists, to the digital space, that on’t have a lot of exposure but deserve it.

SLE: Is your gallery open to any digital artist to showcase their work? If so how can they get involved?

Scotch: Anyone that has an interest in having their art shown is welcome to reach out and start that conversation with us. We are an NFT experiential gallery, so we like to highlight digital art on the blockchain.

SLE: Is the NFT artwork currently on display available for sale?

Scotch: Yes it is for sale however we do not yet have an in-game marketplace that would allow us to sell art in Linden but that is in the works.

SLE: Since NFTs are non-fungible tokens, how can you ensure NFT protection so that they cannot be duplicated or copied by anyone in Second Life using a simple snippet tool or screenshots?

Scotch: The nature of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) is that they are, in fact, not a screenshot or a snippet. NFTs are a digital asset. NFTs can be multimedia with moving parts and music. They can also have utility in gaming and other platforms. Imagine playing a card game on your PC, but owning all the cards. Because of this, you would be able to take them to whatever platform you wanted and trade them for better cards, just like you would a physical deck, you might buy in your local comic book store.

The artists are paid for their work, not only the first time it sells but also as an ongoing percentage of every resale of that NFT. If set up correctly the artist will always get a royalty paid to them. This is a way to support artists that may never be given an opportunity to have their work shown let alone profit from it. Sure, anyone can take a screenshot or copy and save most anything they see on a computer screen but it’s always going to be just that. A copy, a fake. It's incredibly easy to verify if an NFT is a copy, far easier than detecting counterfeit physical goods. The fake NFT copies have no value. When you copy you are not showing support for the artist. Scotch and Soda value art. So should everyone.

SLE: Your gallery currently showcases several pieces that are very reminiscent of Garbage Pail kid cards and colorful hippie art.  Who are the artists?

Scotch: Interesting that you said that. One of the artists came over from the Garbage Pail kids NFT project so definitely some of the influence in those great pieces from Ultra Rare. The psychedelic-style NFTs are from the team over at Starcards.

SLE: I noticed there was a stage on your property. What type of events do you host?

Scotch: Soda and I are big fans of live music. We will be hosting everything from Acoustic to Zydeco (had to). But wait that’s not all we also utilize the stage for other events such as Queens of Burlesque, seasonally themed performances, and the best of them all, Puppy adoptions!

SLE: Are you currently hiring? If so, what positions are available?

Scotch: We are always looking for designers, photographers, builders, stylists, and fashion designers. We generally work on a per-project basis but as we grow that could change.

SLE: Can you tell our readers why you decided to open Scotch & Soda? Was it to help promote fellow artists or just a love for art and to introduce NFTs to the second life community?

Scotch: Scotch and Soda Gallery is a collaborative effort between me and Soda. We opened the galley out of common interests. A passion for great art and killer music. (metal devil horns in the air) Soda and I had worked together on projects that always had a middle man or some outside interference that kept us from the potential that we could see in one another. We support and encourage each other to excel without envy. We wanted to bring that good energy to a metaverse that checked all the boxes for us. The mother of all metaverses. Second life.  We wanted to be the first to introduce the work of NFT artists that we have been following, and working with, in a way no one had done before.

SLE: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Scotch: Scotch and Soda Gallery is an experiential NFT project that showcases established and emerging NFT artists in a mixed reality setting. The art is shown, not on drab walls, but within a 3D environment. We invite you to come and experience it for yourself.  As always, if you like what we do, tell people about us.

Spotlight on Shawn’s Voice Hangout - A Sci-Fi Theme voice Hub with Seven Locations to explore with friends

There are many hangouts in Second Life that host a variety of themed events. Shawn’s voice hangout is the newest sim on the grid that offers Second Lifers a place to chill on voice while exploring seven impressive sci-fi-themed HUB that you can teleport to using a stargate. It seems to be getting a lot of attention.

The SL Enquirer met up with the creator,  Shawn Peterson (colgate1981) to learn more about the sim and locations like the underwater exploration area, Shawn's voice hangout, game area, "Star Lounge” Gentlemen's club, “Club SG” Music venue, and an Escape Room by Mad Pea.

 Interview with Shawn Peterson (colgate1981)

SLE: HI Shawn, it is a pleasure meeting with you for a tour and interview about this amazing Sci-Fi-themed Hub, How did you discover Second Life, and what inspired you to create Atlantis?

Shawn: I discovered second life because a friend brought me here because I was wanting a social platform. I came up with the theme after a conversation I was having with a friend about Greek Mythology. I suddenly thought of the story of Atlantis and when I saw a stargate portal on market place I ran with the stargate theme.

SLE: This is certainly a unique kind of social platform and the theme is great! Did you design this sim yourself or do you have a team of designers that help you? Also was it a personal love of Sci-Fi or did you feel there was a need for it thinking Second Life, lacked Sci-Fi-themed sims?

Shawn: Sort of I have been bouncing ideas off of friends and using some of them to help me with the build. It’s also a personal love for Sci-Fi.

SLE: That is great you were able to ask your friends for their input. There are a lot of sci-fi fans in Second Life so you made a good choice. As you mentioned above, it is based on the TV shows Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. What did you specifically like about the series?

Shawn: I loved the Stargate movie but I never saw the series that proceeded just heard of it.

SLE:  We love the portal system you have in place and can see you put a lot of work into creating this Hub with 7 Stargate locations. How many Sims are there in total?

Shawn: There are 7 themed areas on this SIM. It's like an onion with many different layers but tastes better.

SLE: Oh wow, I’m surprised you were able to fit all of that on one sim! Starting with the landing point, Shawn’s voice hangout. What do your guests do there?

Shawn: It's not subdivided so it's all Shawn’s voice hangout. There are table games and a bowling alley. So some people just stand around and talk and others play games together.

SLE:  You have a bowling alley and game tables at the landing point but you also have a game room. What is the difference between the two? Do you host tournaments and game nights?

Shawn: The landing area has newer table games and the game room has vintage arcade games. No, I don’t have tournaments.

SLE: I like that you have interactive activities for your guest to do together. The Escape Room by Mad Pea is a great activity to offer guests!  I’ve experienced escape rooms in real life but never in Second Life. They can be intense with all the riddles, and puzzles with a timer but a lot of fun to do with a group. Can you explain how it works in SL?

Shawn: It's pretty much a puzzle you have to solve in order to escape. You combine things that you find in order to get the next clue.

SLE: Nice! We will have to come back sometime and play! We noticed you have two Clubs for guests. Club SG and the Star Lounge which is more of a gentleman's club. Can you tell us a little bit about both and the gentlemen’s club also is it open for the ladies with special “Chippendale” night events?

Shawn: So the Club SC is a music venue where I host both Live performers and DJs. The Star Lounge is going to be a unisex exotic club it will have a ladies' night on Wednesdays.

SLE: What is Kanhark used for? There is a beautiful view when you take the elevator to the top floor.

Shawn: It's Just a space-themed environment to explore I may have events there.

SLE: The space station is a neat build to explore for those sci-fi lovers. Do you do any roleplay there? How does it tie into the theme?

Shawn: No role play. You know how the movie stargate they have a gate that goes to other planets so that's why I have the location Kanhark.

SLE:  Oh I see. Finally, there is the underwater exploration location. It is very impressive with the underwater landscape with a hidden cave and shipwreck. What kind of activities happen there?

Shawn: It's just another area to explore for those who want to do more than just stand around.

SLE: It’s great that you have something for everyone. Are you currently hiring for this club or any location on Shawn’s Voice Hangout?

Shawn: Yes I have auditions for both the Music venue and exotic club at Shawn’s voice hangout.

SLE: You and your team did a fabulous job on this design. We hope to see it flourish in Second Life. Thank you for your time.

Shawn: you’re welcome.

FRANKS: SERVING THE SL COMMUNITY FOR 15 YEARS – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

No exposé’ on popular romantic sims in SL would be complete without including the various iterations of Franks that are to be found by the intrepid entertainment aficionado.  Long a mainstay of the “Fine Dancing” genre, Franks Entertainment Group, consisting of five separate entertainment venues, ranks among the finest on the grid.

While attending a Tina Turner tribute concert a few nights ago, I happened upon Mr. William Zeta, Owner of Franks Entertainment Group.  While Miss Turner was off-stage changing costumes, I managed to corral Mr. Zeta and ply him with questions about this most remarkable and Iconic venue.

Josh (Thomas 1 Bellic)  (JB)  Hi William. Thanks for agreeing to chat with me. What a gorgeous place you have here. Frank's Elite has long been iconic among the fine dancing venues in SecondLife. How did you happen to get involved in this business?

William Zeta (WZ):   Thank you very much. Frank's Entertainment Group (FEG) has a very long tradition in second life. Fortunately, from the beginning, I've been part of that (some as inspiration but mainly as a silent partner paying tier fees). For example, folks might not know, Sphynx Jazz Club was where Nanceee (the original founder and sole owner) first danced in SL, my home SL became what is Frank's Elite today, and my home's name Chateau d'Sphynx inspired the name for our famous dining experience—Chateau d'Elite.   And, when Nanceee left, she handed the baton to me.

I'm proud of the history of Frank's Entertainment Group and excited about the future of Frank's.

JB:  I understand Frank's Elite is not the only venue you manage. In fact, I have heard there are actually five main venues. Tell me about those please?

WZ:  Frank's has been in existence for 15 years now. We have seen many copy our name, even use our builds, and tag our name in their social media to use all the good nature and experiences we have built over time. But I would like to clear up some misinformation; all of our venues have been in continuous operation, are open, and are the first of their kind venues and experiences in Second Life:

·         Frank's Jazz—This venue is open to all, with DJs, live singers, and an event or two poolside (don't miss the Playdolls monthly pool party:).

·         Frank's Elite Jazz—Our private club with events and shows for members only.

·         Bogart's Karaoke Bar & Cafe—Our fun and informal space that releases the singing performer in you.

·         Sphynx Jazz—Our small intimate performance venue, with the tagline, "bring your ID, not your EGO."

·         Chateau d'Elite—Our private dining venue

We also have many smaller spaces to enjoy from Nina's Hall, Chez Frank, Elite's Chapel, Frank's Jazz Pool & Beach, etc.

JB:  Surely an operation this size is more than a one-man show. Who are some of the key folks who help in sim development and management?

WZ:  “Man show” is probably the wrong gender! We have a great team of women that are inspiring! First is Ms. Persia, our GM, and my right (also left) hand woman. She has an incredible work ethic and attention to operations that allow Frank's, to be Frank's. Sphynx Jazz Club is run by Ms. Yukie Le.   Ms. Pru is our decorating expert. DJ Patrick produces CUTS. DJ Filo focuses on marketing. And, our builds are done by Mr. Wetherby. Ms. Nina, Ms. Tali, Ms. Quinn, Ms. Rosa, Ms. Ninette, Ms. Jenn, Ms. Rati, and Ms. Jolie are critical parts of our management team. And we're excited that Ms. Petra Steele recently joined us, focusing on creating new types of events.    Talk about a powerhouse team!   And, of course, our team is supported by many wonderful hosts, DJs, and live singers!

JB:  So…what is it that makes your venues different from all the other Dance venues out there?

WZ:  We never forget who is first and foremost in our minds every day. All our decisions begin with and end with how this benefits those who visit our venues. In fact, I spend a significant amount of time talking with members about their experiences. They have taught me much. We know that people feel better when they leave our venues. It is always reassuring to hear from our VIPs, members, and guests who say their first or significant second life events happen at a FEG venue.

Another key difference is that our purpose is the experience in our venues and the quality of our services. I mean, look at our team! Have you ever seen a large and talented group like ours focusing on guests and members? That's their sole job. That's meant to engage and delight!

Lastly, we invest heavily in developing our own technology specific to our venues. For example, none of the karaoke systems were available as simple and easy to use for streams and voice, so we wrote our own.   We use a new event production system for CUTS and new immersive shows. Stop by Nina’s Hall to see what I mean:  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Franks%20Jazz%20Club/68/82/24  There is a lot behind the scenes, such as a custom loyalty program--Frank's Star Points, and so much more.

JB:  I understand you also have a Loyalty Program? Tell me about that, please?

WZ:  This is another exciting innovation, and nothing like it existed in SL before. Today our guests collect Frank's Star points by visiting and engaging in our venues. You can use those Star points toward services, such as our award-winning Chateau d'Elite dining experience, Forevermore Weddings, gift certificates, flowers, and various cute and fun gift items. You use our STAR point vendors like you would use $L in vendors you are used to seeing. But that's just the beginning. The future is exciting as we focus on the total experience and have the capability to build a unique experience for our VIPs and members.   Our guests and members create value for themselves just by engaging with our venues.

JB:  I imagine there must be a lot of details to take care of in managing an operation of this magnitude. How do you prioritize them all?

WZ:  Frank's has been great at creating safe and engaging spaces for folks in Second Life for over 15 years, always honoring our past while innovating and changing continuously. You know you are successful when there are many copy-cat clubs out there. We've never worried about copy-cats. Instead, we focus on what we bring today and how we innovate in the future.

Creating the musical experiences, we have a great lineup of live singers and DJs that call our venues home. Many performers partner with us and work collaboratively on supporting and improving their show in ways that go beyond just their performance.

Lastly, but equally important, is a safe environment and memorable experience for our guests and members ensured by our fantastic staff. They make all the difference.

To put it simply, our priority in order is VIPs, Members, Guests, Entertainers, and Employees.

JB:  And what of the future? Any new developments on the horizon. Or additional Venues planned?

WZ:  I'm excited by all the focus on metaverses in the tech world. We are in the initial stages of leveraging the new tech we created last year. We will push that as far as we can, creating unique experiences! We will be producing new types of entertainment (more on that soon)! And a new venue? Hmm... possibly!

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our SL Enquirer readers?

WZ:  We have some great events coming up!

NEW!! SpinMasters DJ—A fun competition between DJs. March 27th at 7PM-9PM. Poolside at Frank's Jazz. Smart casual and swimwear are recommended. You should soon see an announcement of our competing DJ's.

Saint Patrick's Weekend—Irish fun from March 17th to March 20th in all venues. It's not just a day for us, but an entire weekend! Dress like a Leprechaun.

Our 15th Anniversary Celebration. June 19th at all of our venues! A fantastic run enjoyed by so many guests, members, staff, and owners!

So, there you have it folks,  Grab your dance partner – or meet one there – and head on over to a Franks Entertainment Group venue for what is truly destined to be a Night to Remember.  Even if you used to go there, but haven’t lately,  give them a look-see.  It will be well worth your time.

Be There!

Aloha!

JB
