Spotlight on Prehistorica: The Dawn Kingdoms- Nena Dreadlow Reporting

Prehistorica: The Dawn Kingdoms is a place where you can role play one of these majestic creatures such as a Apatosaurus,  or a  Triceratops or even a Tyrannosaurus rex!. I have never seen a sim such as this on second life so I was very curious to explore and see what it was all about.

Before heading there I did some research on some specific type of dinosaurs that can be found on the sim. History books say that dinosaurs first appeared about 225 million years ago. What caused their extinction is still up for debate. The only thing we can do is marvel at the fossils discovered and wonder how they lived based on the clues they left behind.

Scientists divide this era into 3 periods: the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. The Apatosaurus dinosaur lived in the late jurassic period. They were herbivore with a long neck and tail and Triceratops where the largest of the horned dinosaurs.   It’s one of the most recognizable of all dinosaurs and the best known ceratopsid.  When I think of one of the scariest dinosaur that once ruled  earth’s landscape ,it is the Tyrannosaurus or better known as a T-Rex.  The name speaks for itself.

Can you imagine if they still existed today? How different would life be for all of us?
I would imagine we would be cautious not to bump into one and become a meal.

At Prehistorica, we can go back to prehistoric times and be the dinosaur!. How cool is that?

When you go to the sim you enter the store where they are a lot of dinosaurs to choose from or you can go right into the prehistoric world using the time machine. They offer a free dinosaur avatar or a time traveler outfit there so you can easily immerse yourself into the theme.   Once you get to the time machine you can pick from 3 places to visit. Cretaceous Canyon, Fossil Beach or Jurassic jungle. There are other areas at Prehistorica but they are for residents of the sim only.

I first went to Cretaceous Canyon and was  immediately  amazed by what I saw. There are dinosaurs roaming around like you just stepped back I time. You can hear sounds of them all around you. I just loved exploring and seeing some of the dinosaurs up close. To just be able to imagine what it was millions years ago it just amazing.

Next I visited Fossil Beach.  This was another place that dinosaurs roamed around freely.  This area of course was surrounded by beach and trees. What a wonderful place with all the sights and sounds of dinosaurs. I just loved being able to see what it must have been like while the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Next I went to Jurassic Jungle.  This is right across from fossil beach and as the title says it is a Jungle! It has a swamp and fog all around it and looks so realistic.

The sim is in the Mesozoic Era...the Age of the Dinosaurs and is educational. This era saw the rise of iconic dinosaurs and lizards and the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea.  It spans 252 million years ago to 66 million years ago. Something I had no idea about so it was nice to learn something new about theses massive creatures and the scientific findings and terms that are used  today.

Being able to travel back in time just like that is one of the things I love about Second life but being able to visit a place such as this is just wonderful.

The beauty of Second Life is not only what you can buy but also what you can see. If you haven't already make sure you take a trip to this sim at least once.

An Update Report on Second Life 2.0: Anything new happening with that?-Ceciliarosalie Reporting...

Recently I went back in time visiting SL’s historical locations in Second Life and marveled at our past. This time I researched what the future of Second Life might be with Second Life 2.0 on the minds of residents who wonder what will become of our current virtual world.
Early in 2014 we heard the first rumors about a “new second life” that LL was working on, since then residents started talking more about this new project. I have to admit that my overall impression was that most residents have mixed feelings about this undertaking.
The dates are set with beta starting late this summer and the final release in 2016. My personal opinion is that this new platform will resemble the already existing open sim ones. We have no information on avatar’s architecture but if you ask me, I don’t think it will be much different from current SL’s starter avatar.
I think LL’s personal goal is to bring back those who have tried SL before and they didn’t stay. The next generation platform, and not SL 2.0, as they prefer to call it will first be revealed to alpha users who know maya and later more and more people will be invited as it will become easier to use.
This new platform is supposed to offer greater possibilities to builders and creators and it will also support tools like blender and more. It will  be mobile compatible from the beginning and more powerful which literally means less lag and the ability to host events for thousands.
According to official claims, the next generation platform is not an ancestor of our virtual world and will not be exactly one, but there will be the ability to build  within the new environment and additionally it will be targeted at age 13+.

FAQ about SL 2.0

Will SL close down?
Definitely not. Linden Labs will continue to improve and support second life even when the new platform is out. The two projects will run in parallel and users should be able to go back and forth.
What about the compatibility with Secondlife contents?
Complete backward compatibility is not LL’s absolute outset, but certain things, such as our identities, friends list, several objects (most likely mesh) and our balances will be transportable. Keep in mind that transportation will be possible from the “old world” to the “new” one and not backwards.
In conclusion, it is obvious that we won’t need a migration plan in the near future, in fact, It could be years before we take the next step and to use this new thing instead of SL.
Dear readers don’t hold your breath, let’s see what happens and cross that bridge when we get there.

Lanai's 10TH YEAR Speech
Wow what a Party!  Hi friend Welcome to SLE’s 10th Anniversary and my rezzday SLebrity Yacht Party! You all look truly amazing  ad I hope you are all having a fabulous time
I promise to keep my speech within a reasonable amount of time so those ridiculously hot Chippendale’s down below don’t start to feel lonely without me …*unravels my speech*
Where do I start summing up the past decade in Second Life? I know it is pretty shameless right?  I guess I’ll start from day one when I arrived looking like a pastey noob doing a penguin walk, homeless, shoeless and friendless on the grid trying to figure out my dashboard. After that hurdle that I’m sure you all can relate, I got it all figured out. That is when SLE’s roots began to grow…like a relentless weed that haters gave up trying to get rid of and just let it grow out of control.

I’m not sure if I am still here due to an excessive Second Life addiction, the drama, a genuine love of virtual media or meeting people from all over the world. I guess it is a combination of all those things and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everything that happens in SL is Inspiration for me to write or come up with ideas.
It has certainly be an extraordinary journey with ups, downs, twists and turns but I have arrived to this point somewhat unscathed with a few greys I can call wisdom.. Looking back, I can say that I have more regrets than I do proud moments being a part of this community we all call our second home. Oh wait, what I meant was…  …… NVM blame it on the alcohol and distractions.

On a serious note, with each year that passes I have collected a lot of memories, snapshots ,had  fun and somewhat crazy adventures. I have met so many amazing people that I can call friends and that right there is the most valuable thing to me.
We all come here for a reason; Creativity, Socializing, Business, Companionship, Adventure and even perhaps disabilities or limitations that prevent us from doing things or trying something new in the real world.

I’m sure in your time in Second Life, you learned something new about yourself or experienced something that was just so great you couldn’t wait to log back in again and again.

This is truly a unique place and everyone one of you is a star in this virtual world. Each of us has a reason for being here.

What we do contributes to the Second Life community and it affects the people we come in contact with.  We may never truly know the person right next to us or even someone we speak to on a regular basis but I know one thing is for certain, we are all human. We have feelings and we should always keep that in mind when we socialize here. Not everyone is going to see eye to eye or have the same likes. That’s a good thing. If it wasn’t for our differences there wouldn’t be motivation to learn from each other.

It is uniquely our world that we have created for ourselves and share with the people around us. Today is a true testament of the possibilities. I don’t know where the future of Second Life will take us but I am hopefully that we never lose this sense of community and fun.
I promise to continue to serve this community as long as I am able by sharing The SL Enquirer with anyone who reads it or is a part of it in some way.

OK this is getting sappy and those Chippendales are looking restless so I will wrap this ramble up by saying thank you to Team SLE for believing in me and The SL Enquirer. It is you who truly make my vision come to life with your writing contribution and behind the scenes help.  Milae & Mackezie Abbot, thank you so much for these lovely dresses you designed. I couldn’t decide so I had to wear both! And lastly, I’d like to thank  M.Y. Studio Productions, The Night Theater, Chippendales of SL, our sponsors and all of you for being here and celebrating this very special day with me.

Cheers to more years of SLE and to you all.  Enjoy the rest of the evening.

Game of Thrones in Second Life – A New World: Jump In with Both Feet – Moonshade Pastorelli Reporting

We couldn’t wait for the latest installment of the HBO television series, “Games of Thrones.” Afterall, it’s developed a massive cult following. So much so that it’s been lovingly parodied on other shows: “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” set it in Rockefell as “Game of Desks” and the children’s series “Sesame Street” as “Game of Chairs” in which Muppets play musical chairs, using three thrones—one made of golf clubs, another ping pong paddles, and a third baseball bats.

But in Second Life (SL), the Song of Fire and Ice is serious business.  I’ve counted no fewer than 10 sims dedicated to the Game of Thrones theme. SL role play (RP) fashion shops, such as the White Armory and *QD* Empire of Quality, even support the craze by offering their own renditions of Game of Thrones apparel.

One of the longest running Game of Thrones-inspired RP sims in SL is Game of Thrones–A New World, developed four years ago by Bandor Beningborough. According to Marguerite Avril, who plays the newly crowned Queen Maeva of House Tyrell, Katia Boucher and Thony Soir took over the sims from Beningborough and redeveloped them.

Today, Highgarden is on Maui Central sim along with the sim-sized platforms of Dorne and Casterly Rock.  Driftmark and Dragonstone are on the Wild Shores sim. A group that takes part in the RP, but is administered separately is Winterfell on Dark Life. It is the homeland, of course, of the Starks and inhabited by wildlings.

According to Avril, “I would guess we have about 40-50 active players, between the various platforms. The group proper has about 125 members.” The Game of Thrones RP on these sims allows for plenty of creativity within the theme and context. Sixty-eight character classes are available in the game, but limited to 15 beginner classes.  The Unity HUD is used during RP, monitoring health, stamina, and food settings. Winterfell’s notecards make it clear that child avatars are not allowed on the sim. In fact, some of the RP sims allow “adult language and behavior.” But then, the Games of Thrones TV series isn’t exactly for the weak of heart or stomach.

Although RP is king in these sims, players can participate in a number of activities. Highgarden and Dorne recently hosted jousting tournaments. Weekly Stories, Poems & Songs sessions are held at the Rose & Crown Tavern in Highgarden. Players can participate in weapons and jousting training. An upcoming Summer Rose Fest Ball will be held at Highgarden. Besides the engaging group notices dispatched by various characters, players can keep up with news and gossip with each edition of the Westeros News.

It is not the events that make living in Highgarden special, as an event may be a one-time thing,” said Hina Mhia who plays Queen Maeva’s Hand, Lady Hina Tarly. “It is the people you interact with every day that makes it special. We have formed a family with all the residents here.”

“If one of us goes up a level or achieves something in a skill, it is shared by everyone,” she said. “We have notices going out steadily of what people have achieved in archery, weapons, leveling up. Because achieving a new level takes considerable work, it is cause for celebration.”

Circe Auer who plays Circe Stark, Queen of the North, set up a storyline for me. “Our son, Prince Altos, returned recently from being lost and raised by the Greyjoys.” King Rickard Stark believed Altos married beneath himself, causing bad blood between father and son. The king, while fighting over Altos, gave the queen a black eye.

During last week’s Winterfell ball, Prince Altos was found near death by a wilding, who took care of him. Lord Mormont was sent to bring Altos home, but was shot with a wilding arrow that turned out to be poisoned. Auer said, “We have wildlings—a pain in the butt. They love to torment our guards. They even shot me once.”

Auer quietly shared a bit of her character’s treacherous backstory and explained, “You see, while some people tend to make their sims all sunshine and roses, we welcome backstabbing and discontent in RP. That’s what makes good RP—conflict.”

However, the players in these sims are welcoming and helpful. “We are open to anyone wishing to RP in a Game of Thrones setting that offers action, adventure, and good company,” Avril said.

When asked how she would suggest someone get started in joining this RP, Mhia laughed, “Jump in with both feet. Our people, no matter what place you decide to start, are helpful and courteous. We have some incredible role players here.

By the way, Dorne is at war with the Lannisters, and the Battle for Corpse Lake is coming up on May 17. They are recruiting for four warriors to represent the Iron Islands…

Celebrating Seven Years of Success at Club Lion- Rere Sandalwood Reporting…

In an SL world where clubs come and go, coming across a club that has been around for seven years or more is rare.  Thus, when the SL Enquirer learned about Club Lion’s upcoming seven year anniversary, we decided to investigate the club’s key to longevity.
To further our investigation, we not only relied on club owner ITA (huanita.wunderlich), we also turned to her partner Ricardo AvalirA.

With over 152 people in attendance, the May 1, 2015 Club Lion Anniversary Celebration was, according to ITA (huanita.wunderlich) and her partner Ricardo Alvaliro, a huge success.  According to AvalirA, “ITA designed the whole [decorative] platform for the party, and she took some pics…” To get a better understanding of just how awesome the decorations were, ITA was kind enough to share her pictures with the SL Enquirer.
In addition to ITA’s willingness to share the pictures she took of Club Lion’s Seven Year Anniversary, the SL Enquirer asked Alvaliro about his take on Club Lion’s key to longetivity. He states with no hesistation, “ITA’s vision and dedication to her venue.  She is meticulous…it is amazing to watch her create everything for her club….”
ITA’s meticulous nature is not only apparent in the way Club Lion is built, but it is also obvious when one takes a look at the surrounding landscape.  Delicate rose bushes, trees and neatly trimmed shrubbery surround the Club.  In addition, there is a sitting area available for patrons, as well as an area where patrons can candidly stare at the Club’s waterfront.

Outside of Club Lion’s entrance is a neatly decorated, grey cobblestoned entrance that connects to a black dancefloor trimmed in red.  In the middle of the dancefloor is the Club Lion’s name…a name that seems to spin and flash as a reflection of ITA’s accomplishments.
In addition to ITA’s meticulous nature, Ricardo AvalirA also credits her dedication to others as the key to her longevity.  He explains, “I use to sing at ITA’s club years ago…then I took a break…but I have been singing in SL for about five years…”
What is impressive about this comment is the fact that AvalirA not only worked for ITA prior to taking an SL break, but that he was allowed to return to his position as a singer at ITA’s Club Lion upon his return to SL. Though it is easy to assume that the reason for his easy return was due to his partnership with ITA, to dismiss his return on that basis is unmerited because it keenly demonstrates another secret to ITA’s longevity:  cultivating and keeping strong relationships with her employees.

ITA Discusses How Cultivating Friendships Has Led to Club Lion’s Longevity
ITA states in a matter of fact fashion, “Well, [many club owners] just set up a box…a stage, and call that a club…and sometimes, I really wonder about that…” She smiles, then continues, “…you have to stand by your club and your singers…There is so much work to running a club. People just think they can open a club and make money...lol. For me, I find that if the chemistry between the singers, as well as the hosts and other employees is ok with me, that often helps me to keep them as long term employees…”
With honesty and friendship acting as a foundation to Club Lion’s longevity, ITA’s vision, according to her profile page, “…was to create a place where people in Second Life could come to have fun, meet new people, here great music [specifically live performances, though there is a DJ themed event at her Goth Club on Thursdays, too], or just to relax.” This philosophy is regularly practiced by ITA on a daily basis, and she ascertains that this practice is similar to what many have to do on a daily basis in RL.  She contends, “[yes, cultivating and maintaining friendships in SL] is like RL…there are some that like you and some that don’t…you can’t change that…you can only try to make people feel comfortable…treat people like how you want to be treated.”

One of many ways ITA treats others…specifically her employees…the way she would like to be treated is by regularly supporting them when they perform at other venues. For instance, she recently supported Ricardo AvalirA’s performance at Sunshine’s Cove Beach Club and Mermaid’s Reef (61, 75, 22).  While ITA contends that this is normal and in keeping to being partnered with AvalirA, she acknowledges that this kind of support is rare when it comes to SL employee relationships.  She contends, “Supporting one another should happen, but [I know] it does not happen often enough…”
Because ITA is so steadfast in her support, her staff members, in turn are very helpful to her.  She explains, “I have a good staff too…they help me a lot, and they also live with me on the [Club Lion] sim, so I have the best people around me…”

Multitasking and Asking for Help:  Another Secret to Club Lion’s Longevity
Besides cultivating positive and long term relationships with her employees, ITA contends that it is also important to ask for help…particularly if you are interested in opening a club of your own.  “I would strongly suggest to consult with someone who is experienced in running a club….”  ITA continues, “[because]..there are many things that can go wrong. But the biggest thing is that you believe in what you're doing...and keep strong!”

Besides having a strong belief in what she is doing, ITA stresses the importance of being talented in multiple SL sectors.  One way to express this talent is by multitasking, which ITA is a pro at. “In my spare time,” she explains, “I design clothes and make music globes—among other items—that I sell in my storefront.” Though she coughs to denote some sarcasm, the SL Enquirer has seen ITA multitask with ease.  This is because, in addition to designing clothes, ITA  is also a talented Believe me, when you run a club you don't have a lot of spare time. (cough) I design clothes and make music photographer and also runs a Goth Club. And though ITA coughs once more and says, “Believe me, when you run a club you don't have a lot of spare time…” the SL Enquirer urges everyone to look to ITA as a fine example of a Club Owner that not only DOES, but CAN multitask!
In the course of multitasking, ITA also advises that club owners should stay on their toes and be prepared for surprises. “You should always be ready for the unexpected and be prepared…There are so many things to do behind the scenes that nobody sees and believe me, it is a lot of work, but [also very] rewarding.”

Helping Other Charities and Standing By Those That Work For You…
ITA believes that the best way a club owner can be duly rewarded in SL is by sticking by those that work for them rather than treat them like disposable commodities. ITA states, rather emphatically, “It's always been my dream to own a club and sl gave me that chance to live my dream…” she continues, “…and at times had to fight for that dream. [However,] I strongly believe that I am doing good for others by providing great singers from all over the world. It's always fun to meet new people who [later] become friends.”
Fueled by her belief in helping others, ITA cites her talent in doing so as one of her many accomplishments. She explains, “I have raised lindens for cancer charities and have done many singer contests…as well as contests for our guests [complete] with linden prizes.”  Thus, by reaching out to the community she serves, ITA has successfully built strong relationships with other organizations, as well as sufficiently catered to those that patronize her club.

Be mindful that ITA is very modest about her accomplishments.  However, all modesty aside, there is an aura of respect that exudes from an establishment that has been in SL for seven years.  For this reason and more, the SL Enquirer applauds ITA’s accomplishments, and offer our unconditional support in insuring that Club Lion remains a successful SL establishment. To ITA and the Club Lion staff, here is to another seven years in SL!

Located on the coasts of Adore is a place called Friendship Harbor Estates. It is a cozy oceanfront community with a friendly feel. Owned and operated by Nikki Miami (nikki.tryce) and Braxton Miami it is currently home to 7 families with room for plenty more.  If you are house hunting or looking to relocate, there are apartment, townhouses and boat houses available.
Created with love and care Friendship Harbor Estates is not just another community on the grid. It is much more than that. Nikki and Braxton’s vision was to make it a home for residents with growing families. Activities include lots of family fun with a pool, a skating rink, park, Movie Theater and a small beach. The SLE caught up with Nikki to learn more about what makes Friendship Harbor Estates a unique community.

Interview with Nikki Miami

SLE: Ever great idea starts with a little inspiration. What inspired you to create Friendship Harbor Estates?

Nikki: I grew up on the coast of Maine with beautiful ocean views, so I wanted to recreate such a beautiful place in second life.

SLE: What makes this community unique compared to other communities in Second Life?
Nikki: At Friendship Harbor, you are more than a tenant to us, you are our friends, our neighbors, and will feel like part of our family. We truly care for one another.

SLE: Having something to do in a community setting is very important. What type of activities do you offer residents and their families?
Nikki: We have two beautiful parks, a roller skating rink, Movie Theater, public swimming pool, a public beach, and restaurants.

SLE: Do you have property for rent? If so, who should visitors contact for a tour and information on renting?
Nikki: Yes we have a great variety of family homes, as well as apartments and beach front homes. If interested please contact Braxton Miami, Chesneyhaven, or me for information or a tour anytime.

SLE:  Family RP and child avatars are welcome in this community. How do you ensure it is a safe environment for them?
Nikki: We have managers that monitor the sims when we are not available so someone is here to keep an eye on visitors almost all the time. When someone new appears on the sim, we are very quick to approach them and ensure they are respectful while visiting.

SLE: Jobs are important in SL for those who would like to maintain a certain lifestyle, as well as role play a provider for their family. Do you have community jobs available to residents of Friendship Harbor Resort?
Nikki: We have many role play positions and although we do not pay for people to play the positions, we do allow a fee to be charged for services such as our medical center offers the opportunity for role playing a Doctor and charging for services.

SLE: Is there any other information you would like to share with our readers?
Nikki: Yes, if you’re looking for a peaceful, beautiful role play community, to enjoy your second life, we hope you will consider Friendship Harbor Estates, it’s such a beautiful place to live your Second life.
